Found this gem on Yelp, when looking for a Greek restaurant to try for our anniversary. It's an order at the counter style restaurant and the staff bring the food to your table. The Greek decor was cool, felt like I steeped back in time for a bit. The food is not cheap but the quality is superb! My wife and I both got the lamb chops with green beans , a greek side salad and a chicken lemon soup. Where do I start, ALL of what we ordered was sensational. This place should be on anyone's short list for lunch in Ventura. Some Greek places are questionable and hit and miss, they are good sometimes and other times just don't cut it. I've been here and every single time it is fresh and generous portions that have tons of flavor. Two kinds of olives, healthy amount of goat cheese, lamb that has real flavor and has not been sitting around or anything. The food here is great and service excellent as well. It's all Greek to me..and that's a good thing. I never made it here after Chuys closed. We wanted something late for lunch and this was the perfect place to come. Very good assortment of Greek food and a nice look inside. You order at the counter they give you a number and then you get ongoing service even after your meal is dropped off. Dee came to our table several times asking if we needed anything and even bringing us some extra tzatziki. Later, she came by and apologized for not coming sooner to clear my plate. Incredible customer service. The restaurant was clean and the lamb gyro, salad and rice plate was on point. Really good. It is such a filling meal and so tasty. I am so tempted to try other entrees on the menu that also sound amazing, such as the poached salmon or pastichio, but I always find myself getting this juicy lamb burger. Sooo disappointed. I hyped this restaurant up to my boyfriend and was excited to have him try one of my favorite gyros. We just got the oldest, crusty food you can imagine and now he doesn't trust my judgement in food. Haha. We ordered several lamb gyros, with fries, and salads to go. We didn't see the food until we got home. Unfortunately, we were not free to go return it. The pita that is typically super soft and fluffy was stale, kind of broke a bit from being folded. The meat was greasy enough to make the cardboard container transparent, soaking my fingers in grease from holding the bottom of the container. The fries were room temperature, if that. Also greasy, but the consistency of almost raw potato. The fries were for sure left over from lunch time. The least they could've done was throw them in the microwave for a few seconds to give the illusion thay they were cooked within the last few hours. I'm wondering if the emptiness of the restaurant is due to the decline in quality. We could've saved a lot of money by getting fast food and it would've been better quality. read more

After 15 minutes of waiting for someone to notice us we left. Went here for lunch. The place is massive, you can't appreciate how big it is from the outside. The place is clean and the employees are extremely friendly. I had a chicken gyro with fries and salad - the portion size is MASSIVE. Everything was very good - the fries, the salad, the gyro. My only small complaint was that there was too much sauce on the gyro. I would recommend having it on the side. While visiting a nearby chocolate shop, Dear Hubby and I first learned about Stephens Market & Grill. We will definitely need to come back when we are in the mood for Greek / Mediterranean food. We did pick up some of their mixed olives, which made for a yummy snack. While checking out the interior, I was intrigued by the various dining spaces, the imported Greek treats from biscuits/cookies, to all manner of gourmet specialty foods, wines, gift items, and so much more. Murals grace the walls in all the public rooms, including the very large open dining room. When weather cooperates, they also have a good-sized outdoor patio, too. Free parking is available out back, and you can enter that way. We had initially walked in off Main Street, and passed through the restaurant on the way to the parking lot. The main food to-go section and cold cases are to the front / Main Street side. Two of the women at the main counter were gracious in answering our questions about the menu. We were made to feel welcome, even though we only made a small purchase and weren't staying for a meal. All these factors made it a place that I've bookmarked for a future visit to spend more time. read more

I was missing Greece so... We had to go get some Greek food!! Stephens was the perfect way to get transported to Greece! From the moment we got to the parking lot I couldn't wait to try to the food! One day, some years ago, I was at the counter of a tiny little grocery store in Santorini. Nick, the shopkeeper, asked me, "Mikey, why you leave Greece? Why you leave Santorini?" He looked shocked to hear I was leaving. His questions were genuine. It was the end of a six week visit to Greece. My wife and I were in Santorini for the last week of the trip and I had made friends with Nick. Nick's question was simple, and although the answer was equally simple, I couldn't get the words out of my mouth. Anything I might say would just sound stupid. Because my vacation is over? Stupid reason. Because I will lose my job if I'm not there next Monday? Another stupid reason. Compelling reasons, sure, but still, stupid. I stood there a moment, looking at my shoes. A flood of emotion was ready to spill over the dam. Finally, I just kinda shrugged and said, Thanks Nick, thanks for everything. I turned and walked out of the store. After six weeks, I was stone cold in love with Greece, but I had to leave her. I had to leave Greece, but Greece has never left my heart. Ever since then, every time I eat at a Greek restaurant, that scene replays in my mind. I can hear Nick's voice: Mikey, why you leave Greece? A meal here at Stephens Grill is just the thing to soothe the heart of those that yearn to be in Greece, because the food here is authentic AF. The food is made with many ingredients imported from Greece. The food is cooked by the owner who is also imported from Greece. The recipes and cooking techniques are 100% authentic. This is as Greek as it gets. My go to meal here is the Gyro Plate. It's so good I never order anything else. Never. There's so much food on the Gyro Plate that typically, my wife and I spilt an order. You get a stack of delicious gyro meat, edges crispy as can be, along side of a sizeable portion of hummus, some tzatziki, diced cucumber and tomato, a dolma, a small Greek Salad with Kalamata Olives and Imported Feta, and a Pita. Oh, and also a mound of crispy French Fries. It's a hell of a lot of food! But if you plan on sharing it, be sure to order an extra pita bread. I have to admit the Gyro Plate isn't quite as good as it was just a few years ago because the French Fries they use these days just aren't as good as the fries they replaced. These fries are Good, but they used to be Great. It's not a deal breaker, but I wish they still had those other fries. (I hate change. LOL). This is an order at the counter and then they bring your food to you kind of place. Soft drinks are self serve. The restaurant does have a small bar, so you're not limited to just beer or wine. The indoor dining area is quite large. All the tables are four tops with blue and white gingham plastic table coverings. The chairs are comfortable enough. The walls are decorated with scenes from life in Greece. There is a TV mounted above the bar, you know, just in case a futbol game breaks out somewhere in the world. Stephen's Grill's got you covered. Oh, and there is a little patio area out back that has heaters for when it gets chilly, and the patio is dog friendly. One of the best things about this restaurant is that it's rarely crowded. Despite having the best Greek food in town, there's never a problem getting a table here. It was my second day in a row eating Greek food, and frankly, this Greek meal was simply not up-to-par with Greek meal I enjoyed the day ripe. I was planning on a bottle of wine... But at that time couldn't find anything which seemed reasonably priced/cost effective... With wine YMMV ...but $47 at a Greek cafeteria style restaurant didn't make sense to me. We ordered the lamb shwarma wrap plates and WOW. I have tried all of the other greek/mediteranean spots in Ventura but had yet to try this spot. Stephen's was better than all of them combined. These folks are masters on the grill. Every special we've had is worth trying. Our go-tos are generally the gyro plate, chicken souvlaki, or their pastrami sandwich (I know right?!?) I have been here a half dozen exquisite times... and every time the menu surprises me! There's a gorgeous room up front reserved for big parties, and they have specials so if you want to reserve that room, I would highly recommend asking them about the party catering for that room. You'll save money that way. Food here is wonderful. Very delicious. I'm always trying new dishes here and never disappointed! It's authentic mediterranean food with a fancy little flare, even though the restaurant itself is just like very homie like a kitchen with little tables like a dining room. It's really wonderful here and they have murals on the walls that are really really great as well. They have a little market, so if if you have to get some ingredients that you can't find anywhere else so you can make your own Mediterranean food at home. I highly recommend coming in here and taking a look. They also have a little tiny bakery off to the side with treats that are delicious. They have an outdoor patio, which is fantastic to sit out in if you want to be outdoors on a beautiful day. The best gyro you will find in Ventura County hands down. The lamb is the way to go, and the gyro is positively stuffed with thick, delicious pieces of lamb. It comes with a salad and French fries, and the French fries are so delicious as well. My friend routinely states they're the best French fries she's ever had and will drive 20+ miles for them. They're thick, crispy, and super flavorful. Prices are good too - it's like $13 for the gyro and an extra $3 for the salad and fries. I've only eaten in the restaurant once, but it's a gorgeous restaurant with plenty of indoor seating and some outdoor seating as well. Parking is easy too. I normally get my food to go, and it's nice that the food is just as good to go as it is in the restaurant. The gyro even tastes delicious the next day if you have it for leftovers. 100% recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed. read more
