It looks nice inside the Hilton hotel. A group of us arrived on a Sunday early evening with unnecessary reservations. We each had an entree, shared 2 orders of the beef empanadas (Star of the show!), and a total of 5 cocktails and 2 beers. The bill came to just over $300 before tip. This isn't horrible for a tapas spot, but the taste of the entrees were just not worth it. That, and the amount of alcohol you get in most of the cocktails. So much ice and like 2 sips of drink. There's 1 drink with aperol and champagne that is big and you get the remainder of the small champagne as a side car though. We had 2 of the paellas and they were on the smaller side for paella. The flavor was meh and nothing really stood out. I had the steak frites and it was such a small portion of steak. Maybe 4 oz? And the char flavor was so overpowering. The chimichurri I was looking forward to was extremely mild in flavor. The fries were cooked nicely though. Our server was friendly but forgetful. The website and photos look amazing, will feel like you're sitting in Barcelona. However it is in the center of a hotel. That in itself gives you the vibe. It's catered to corporate travellers catching an after work meal. They have a beautiful bar and the service is extremely nice. Lots of space for work related dinner, drinks and lunch. The food however was just OK. It felt like they googled the names and recipes. Nothing we ate tasted special. Corn on the cob is actually Mexican. Their paella was more like a soggy risotto. Their grilled octopus, overcooked. The baked garlic and Brie was decent and so were the patatas bravas. The wine list is extensive. Will give it 3/10 for the friendly service. Likely not coming back. You know how after a long day, sometimes the promise of a well prepared and executed meal is the thing that gets you through? That's exactly what Matador delivers, especially if you are the carnivorous type. I really enjoyed sitting at the bar top affording me a clear view of the exhibition kitchen and the open wood fire pit. The radiant heat was especially terrific on a cold winters night. I opted for the hangar steak which was perfectly cooked medium rare. A dollop of compound butter seamlessly coated the meat and formed a wonderful complement to the meat. The accompanying fries were freshly made, tossed in herbs and cheese and was a great counter texture to the tender meat. The chefs take obvious care in their craft and it shows (and tastes). We got the following items: Wagyu meatballs -- OK, a bit rubbery Charred octopus -- pretty good, nice charry flavor and good sauce to go with it Lamb chops -- OK, nice sauce, but too spicy for some of us; it didn't really need that spicy a sauce Chicken Brochettes -- very good, loved the char on it Shishito peppers -- very good, nice garlic and cheese crunch! Paella Matadora -- very good, the rice was amazing, BUT THEY GIVE LITTLE RICE! Unclear why. The pink onions added a really unexpected dimension to the paella. We would have loved more rice and a crispy bottom at that. The Senorio is nice and pairs with everything. I also got the Fiol Prosecco which was light and delightful. Overall, the paella was the star of the show. Everything else was good, but not amazing -- maybe we went in with high expectations. I give it 3.8 - 4 out of 5. The service was great. Matadora has always been on my list of places to try! I've had two opportunities with different friends to explore the tapas during spring and winter. The first time it was only two people so we didn't get to have as many items most recently. I went with a group before and I think we were able to hit all the highlights! Making a reservation was easy on OpenTable for a cold Saturday night. The restaurant is attached to the Hilton hotel in the middle of their courtyard overlooked by all the rooms above. For drinks, I got the bull fighter which was stronger than I anticipated. My SO wanted a drink that required the smoker which they informed us was not available. Some of the standout favorites from the meal was the duck lollipop and the braised short rib (we got two orders). The mushroom asparagus was sadly not as exciting but the egg was a great touch. Of course we got the flaming chorizo just for the spectacle. Tuna tartare was also good but I think we enjoyed the scallops more. My SO also ordered the wood grilled filet mignon and he enjoyed quickly in a few bites. We came here for Valentine's Day and absolutely loved it. They had a Valentine's specific menu, but most of the dishes we got are from the regular menu. We started off with oysters and jamón serrano. Oysters were very salty and I don't know what the sauce was, wouldn't order again. But the jamón serrano was delicious with crostinis and jam. For tapas we got the beef empanadas, flamingo chorizo, and beef brochette (ranked in the order of what we liked most first). The empanadas are a must order, the sauce was absolutely delicious. Flamingo chorizo had a great snap and kick to it. The pieces that weren't too charred were great for the beef brochette, loved the soft pita and hummus. For the main, we shared steak frites and it was well cooked, but not a huge fan of manchego. I attended a business dinner with colleagues at Matadora located in the Hilton. Food was very good - great flavors, well prepared. I had a few things off of the tapas menu. Others at the table had full entrees. The wait staff was great - engaging, attentive. I like the vibe. The indoor cavernous space has multiple stories of guestroom balconies overlooking the dining room. It is a little bit weird but it does make the space more interesting. Why only 3 stars you ask? Toward the end of our evening we noticed.... some additional dining room guests that were not seated by the hostess (if you know what i mean). We quietly brought it to our waitress' attention and she did state that management was aware. Not a huge red flag for me because anywhere there is food, you have uninvited guests. I love tapas because it gives you a chance to sample a lot of different things. We had a 6:00 PM reservation. Not sure if I expected it to be packed or not but it was not. Lots of open tables were available. I asked for a quiet(er) table but there really aren't any. The hostess did offer to turn down the music, which was appreciated. The restaurant has a comfortable vibe. We sat at a rounded booth in comfortable seats. Being short, I loved the bar rail so my feet were not swinging like a toddler. And then we sat. And sat. And sat. Did I mention the place was practically empty? When a server eventually appeared, all he asked was "bottle or tap water?" We answered. He poured water and slammed the glasses down on the table only to walk away without taking drink orders. I want to note that on the ride over to dinner that my dining companion and I discussed how much to tip someone working on Christmas. I wanted to make sure the server we got was well paid for having to work on Christmas. I was fully prepared to tip out at 100% of the bill. Being ignored without even a mention of "I will be right with you" and little interaction meant he was not getting a 100% tip. We had a very long time to review the menu because he disappeared for a long time. When he finally came back to take drink orders, we were ready to order but before we could, he was gone again. And so we waited. Again. The bar had a few people sitting around but for sure was not busy. I have no idea why a premade sangria and an iced tea took _quite_ so long. When he dropped off the drinks I needed to stop him from leaving again so we could finally place an order. I think we ordered a good selection of tapas. We chose the jamon serrano; roasted vegetables (carrots and broccolini with labneh); patatas bravas; a side of sauteed mushrooms and garlic; beef empanadas with mojo sauce, harissa aioli and cilantro; Merguez lamb sausage with cannellini beans and tomato sauce; braised short rib with celery root puree, and a gremolata of figs and pistachios. Now I wax poetic about the patatas bravas. Of course these are a tapas staple at any Spanish restaurant. To me, these were the platonic idea of the dish. Absolutely perfect. Some may think it odd but they tasted exactly like the crinkle cut potato wedges from Nathan's Hot Dogs in Coney Island. Thy brought me right back to childhood. All these needed was that long handled red fork! We loved the empanadas and the roasted vegetables. Both were delicious. I am not a fan of Merguez sausage but my dining partner in crime enjoyed them. Also delicious was the short rib. the pureed celery root was the consistency of agliot, minus the cheese. Everything was so good that we planned to invite some friends to go back on New Year's Day. Then we go back to the service. While there were a handful of people at the bar, we were now the only table of people in the dining area. We were done, had pushed plates away and could not get the server to acknowledge us, ask if he could clear plates, if we'd like a dessert menu . . . anything. Again, he needed to be flagged down. Through all of this it seemed quite clear that he would only talk to me and was ignoring my friend's requests. I did ask for the dessert menu but considering how long everything took, I just did not have the patience to wait even longer. We finally got the bill. Remember how I said I wanted to tip 100%? I just couldn't. Don't get me wrong. We tipped and well, I think. I appreciated that he had to work on Christmas. We were polite, not demanding and beyond patient with how long things took. I was alone so I just ordered a salad and short rib tapas. Both were ok. Nothing to write home about. I can't find the salad on the online menu for some reason so unsure the official naming of it or what it was topped or dressed with. I do remember the dressing being a bit watered down tasting. The braised short rib came with celery root puree and I think I would've preferred mashed potatoes. Anyway, I probably will never be back in this area, but if you find yourself here, try it out. I've been waiting to try this place for a bit, and was thrilled when a friend suggested it. Although I love trying new restaurants, I normally stay within the same food choices. I looked at the menu ahead of time and was salivating at the idea of the Lamb Shank. Sadly, it was no longer on the menu, but after much deliberation, and a VERY patient server, I went with the Seared Scallops. They were cooked to perfection, and the pea purée was the perfect balance. I started with the Beet Salad (which is another dish I always order). It was Divine. The Pistachio/Raspberry brought it to an entirely different level. I wanted a cocktail, but didn't want to get hammered, because I have the tolerance of a toddler. First off, this restaurant is inside the Hilton Boston/Woburn which I was staying at. It had pretty convenient hours which I loved and it smelled so good as soon as I checked in so it was very tempting. I love how the ceiling was so high and made of glass, like the rest of the hotel, it felt like being outside while indoors. I got the spirit of San Juan mocktail which was so tasty. I usually don't like mocktails with alcohol "replacements" but this one was as pretty good! The server was so nice and helpful when I asked about the sizes of everything since it was just me in there (I don't go to a lot of tapas places!) I ended up getting three and it was the perfect amount. The meatballs were nice and little, the sauce was sweet and loved the pita that was included that added a lot of balance to the sauce's acidity. The basque street corn was nice and flavorful. My absolute favorite though was the burrata. It was DELICIOUS. The depth of flavor was perfect. Fresh burrata, balsamic drizzle, prosciutto on toast smeared with fig preserves and topped with pistachios. I loved every single bite. I thought everything was really well done and would definitely come back if I stayed at the hotel again! To say I am disappointed would be a gross understatement. To only earn one star from me, an experience has to be hilariously bad. The only thing that went right was that the silverware & plates were clean, and the fries were solid. Otherwise, overpriced, bland, unimaginative* food and some dishes lacked freshness! Even the service was disorganized and, therefore, a miss. Here's a clip from the night that sums up this catastrophe: Mom: "That experience was McDonald's level!" Me: "No, McD's seasons their burger patties." Let me attempt to give you the breakdown based on what I had the opportunity to try: Beet Salad: I appreciate the thought of adding Goat Cheese Mousse, Pistachio, and Raspberry Gastrique. However, these were wholly ineffective at elevating sold slices of beet. If you'll pardon the metaphor: an excellent BBQ sauce paired with an abysmal piece of meat doesn't help much Patatas Bravas: They advertise these as crispy, sorry folks, no crispness in sight (or taste). Up top, they were drizzled too generously with Chipotle Aioli. At the base was an okay tomato sauce that I didn't even know was there until half the potatoes were gone, and I had a mouth full of aïoli. Burrata: Not much to write home about here. An ovaloid of cheese drizzled with oil and vinegar, served on top of the same tomato sauce as under the Patatas Bravas. Next to the cheese was a blend of fruit and cherry tomatoes (not heirloom), which felt entirely out of place. Braised Short Rib: Allow me to digress a little bit. One of the things I learned from HelloFresh and food YouTube videos is the importance of seasoning throughout the cooking process and that fat carries flavor. There may have been some flavors here, but with a decided lack of even salt, they stayed hidden. Exhibit A: Celery Root Purée felt like mashed potatoes made from powder. Exhibit B: the protein tasted bland, and some simple S&P would have done wonders. Oh, and the "Dry fig & Pistachio Gremolata" - nowhere to be found. Flaming Chorizo: This dish has one thing going for it, it looks cool while on fire. Otherwise, it is an okay sausage with either Dijon or Yellow Mustard. I would have loved to try the Piquillo Honey Mustard; I love honey mustard! Yeah, no. Tuna Tartare: Now we're getting into my freshness comment. They'd made the whole thing and stuck it all, plate included, into the fridge. For the app itself, the tuna was good quality, though I was not a fan of vinegar as a sauce/dressing. Further, if there were chiles within, they did not make themselves known. The avocado was fine, though it needed some seasoning. As for seaweed salad, as a matter of personal preference, I was not too fond of it here. Here are some extra notes from my parent's dishes (I didn't personally try anything beyond a nibble): Matadora Burger: Per my second paragraph, the patty needed basic salt. Faroe Island Salmon: A $30 piece of fish, yet previously frozen. The Service: When we placed our order, the food didn't come out shotgun style (brought out when prepared), but the sequence didn't make sense either (nor were we asked). For example: were ordered three tuna tartares. We'd get a single tuna tartare, some more things, then the server brought mom her burger, then a few minutes later a tuna tartare. Was mom to have the burger get cold while she ate the tuna, or eat the main before the app? Another critique is that dirty (empty) plates were not cleared promptly and were allowed to pile up. The final nail in the service coffin is that the server brought someone else's bill, not the check with the itemized order, but the slip with the tip and signature line. We found it weird but wrote the tip, signed it, and attached the card. This time, we were brought out an itemized bill for more money than expected. Slip-ups happen, sure, but it wasn't even acknowledged at any point until we called it out. Finally, there is the question of value. Especially for small plates of subpar quality, the prices were too high. Not a single dish had positive standout characteristics that would justify the cost. Matadora is at least a semi-nice restaurant, not a greasy spoon - and such diners give you a man-sized portion for $9.95 instead of $12 for a small serving of boiled potatoes masquerading as crispy. Fails around the board with service, food quality, and value virtually guarantee a return trip is not in the books. Also, please adjust the menu to reflect the dishes accurately. * Just a quick note on "unimaginative:" Sometimes, a restaurant tries to do something unique with a dish, though it fails in execution. Sometimes, a place will go for simplicity, but done to perfection (like that poutine I had in MTL, which the joint executed brilliantly). If you go for something simple, execution better be on point. If you do creative, there's more leeway available. However, if you go the simple route and flub on it, what are you even doing?! read more

The Matador IPA was a pleasant surprise and I'll be going back for the red sangria in a pitcher. The tapas menu has something for everyone - chicken, shrimp, beef, vegetable and vegan. Hummus, empanadas, beet salad, beef ribs, and chorizo were all amazing. Main course menu was excellent but we didn't have room after all the tapas. The menu is extensive and hard for a guy here on his own for business to manage. Lots of tapas, at tapas prices. I went there recommended by a friend since I was looking for a restaurant to host an event. The place looked very elegant and inviting. The food was not the greatest. We ordered the seafood paella and it came swimming in water, not the best and almost felt like soup rather than paella. Also ordered a few glasses of sangria, seems like the waiter serves his own drinks. We sat by the bar area and watched how all wait staff reached into the fruit jars with their bare hands to place into your drink. The seating and atmosphere is nice with nice music. Service was a bit slow but it seems they're a bit short on staff but nonetheless our server was great. Poor guy was dashing around everywhere but he did his best to be efficient and as attentive as possible. It took a while before we had or drink order even placed. They really need to get more help. Extremely disappointing experience last night for dinner. We had seen the positive reviews, the spotlight on Phantom Gourmet, and perused the menu online and we were excited... but boy did it fall flat. The restaurant itself is very unique. In a hotel lobby's atrium, with rooms overlooking it. It's a bit odd but honestly it's really nice and open. We dug the space and once we were seated, noticed that the menu online vs. the the printed menu aren't even remotely the same. The online version is just a sample in comparison, with the real one being 3-4 time bigger. We decided to order some drinks and I got my glass of wine incredibly fast. Probably in like... 45 seconds. My wife's martini however didn't show up for about twenty five minutes. We ordered our first round of food and settled for the braised short rib ($14), the patatas bravas ($12), the Pan Con Tomato ($8), and a dip trio ($18) which came with olives and tortilla chips. The short ribs were pretty decent although a tad dry, the patatas bravas weren't crispy at all and we ended up sending them back because they flat-out sucked, and the dip trip was mediocre at best. The hummus was okay but the eggplant one was bad as well the red pepper one. The presentation of the dips was horrific. Looked like they squeezed a tube of toothpaste onto a plate and the side of olives only have 7 of them... Oh and did I mention that when they dropped the food off, that they forgot the olives and tortilla chips and we had to wait for our waitress to swing by to grab her attention so she could take care of it? In one last ditch effort to eat something decent we tried to flaming chorizo ($16) and it was fine although it took forever to arrive. Our waitress thought we had already received it and spent the majority of our meal completely confused. We also had a manager come over to auction off some dishes that we didn't order. The staff in general didn't appear in sync and were inattentive. We left hungry and pretty frustrated overall. They did comp the patatas bravas per our complaint but seemed surprised when we mentioned that they were not crisp (mind you the menu described them as crispy). The first night I stayed at the Hilton in Woburn the smell coming from the restaurant smelled really good. I waited until the second night to visit the Matador. Since I was alone I decided to sit at the bar and thought I would get better service. Once I sat at the bar it took over 5 minutes to be acknowledged by one of the two bartenders. I ordered a draft beer and after another several minutes, had to ask for a menu. I sat down next to a young man that had bathed in cologne and it was just so unbearableI I moved to across the bar. I watched the two bartenders struggle with the bar patrons. They just couldn't get it together. After about 30 minutes of being ignored I asked if I can order. I was told "be right back." Finally she came back and got my order. A New York Strip with sautéed spinach and a salad to start with. Well all three came at once and was slide from behind me onto the bar by a food runner. In a nice restaurant and I've been to many, the salad should come out prior to the entree. At this point I was already frustrated with the service so I bit my tongue and decided to eat. The sautéed spinach was bland, not nearly enough garlic and the salad was a slop of greens. The steak was ordered medium rare and was cooked perfectly but did not have the Smokey flavor I smelt the night before, in fact it was also bland. It was OK at best. I get a better tasting steak at Texas Roadhouse. I was halfway through my meal when one of the bartenders finally came over and asked how was everything. I just said it was fine. Once I finished after about 15 minutes, a bus boy cleaned off my plates from in front of me. This was after the bartenders passed by me several times. I asked, while the bartender was passing by for the check. I watched her make some drinks, take other patrons their check and as she passed by again, I again said to her,"are you getting my bill?" She snapped at me saying I never asked her for the check you must have asked the other girl for it....uh....no. So to wrap up, service poor, food just OK, ambiance, a hotel bar. read more

Ate dinner with a friend at Matadora. The food was delicious. Our server was Kenny. He was hysterical. We will be back.

Excellent meal. The restaurant is in a Hilton hotel, but do not let that discourage you from visiting. The cocktails and food were fantastic. I started with the "Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," which had pomegranate and vanilla -- it went down way too quickly. I followed it with the Stumbling Monkey (coconut rum with an egg white foam and caramelized banana slices on top), and it was very very good, but didn't necessarily leave me stumbling. My brother had a local draft beer that he said was excellent. There were four of us and for dinner, we ordered a bunch of tapas (shrimp toast, beet salad, olives, fries with melted cheese, mushroom and asparagus salad, cod croquettes, and something else) and the whole grilled Branzino (for $34) with a side of spinach and grilled mushrooms. A restaurant like this in a hotel lobby? Not what I expected for sure. We made reservations. It's around the holidays, so we kind of expected it could be busy. It was not busy at all. We did not need reservations. They were probably three parties in the entire place. We were sitting at a hightop booth. There were other seatings available, but I think they were trying to keep things around we are at the bar was. So we were OK with that. Paragraph there were three of us. We got a picture of red sangria. It was really good, I'll be up just a tad too sweet. I think it would be really great to have if you were sitting out on the patio our summers eve. We ordered a myriad of tapas, and ended up worrying the paella for dinner which the three of us shared. We got the octopus tapas. Good. Not gummy, not chewy. Really flavorful. We got the salad that had asparagus and mushrooms. And unexpected surprise. Loved the scotch egg on it? We also got the chorizo. I have to be honest, I did not think that one was worth the price as it was only a few pieces of flaming chorizo. More visibility excitement, then actual tapas to order. I just thought the portion was a bit small. But the flavor! Very spicy but good. We also got the pear and cheese things. Those were amazing. Get them if you go. All in all? I would love to go back. It's a little cost prohibitive for me as an every day dinner, but if I wanted to have a special time to go out with friends or my guy, I would definitely think this this would be put on the map. read more
