Another 5 star for the Bancroft. This place has such high quality, perfectly executed food with exquisite service. This is our 2nd anniversary coming by and they just make you feel like royalty. There is plenty of free self parking available. The inside is more masculine but beautiful. I've never been to a place that makes me feel like I am important like they do. We got the fried clams to start. They were sweet and well fried. Tender and paired with a nice sauce. We shared the 48oz cowboy ribeye. It was massive and presented so nicely. Last year I had the regular ribeye and prefer it but there was nothing wrong with this. You get to choose sauce or salt. We love the smoked salt and also went with a horseradish cream. My mom and I like to have a nice meat dinner from time to time. A few years back we stumbled upon The Bancroft and it was excellent - so, she came into town this past weekend, wanted to do our fancy big meat dinner, and we knew The Bancroft was the place to go. I made a reservation for a Saturday night at 7:00 for two. Note: I originally went to make the reservation online from their website but the availability was not good, so I called instead. Online it pretty much looked booked between 4:30 and 8:00 - I called and was able to get 7:00 without hesitation. So, make note to call if you don't see the time or range listed online. We were greeted as we entered and checked in with the host/hostess. They were friendly and polite and told us it would just be a few minutes. They brought us back to our table and had us seated shortly there after. Our waitress was great; she told us about the specials, checked in on us, and made sure everything was as expected. We ordered some bevs that were very tasty and had great presentations. Speaking of presentation, let's get on to the food. We ordered the Tomahawk, which if you don't know, is a MASSIVE piece of meat. It's a steak meant to serve two people - in reality, it serves way more than two. The presentation of the tomahawk steak plate alone was beautiful! It had a whole bunch of stuff (see pic). They bring it out for you to see, and then they take it back to the kitchen to slice. We ordered medium rare, and probably should have gone more medium but it was not too rare so it was fine. Now, at The Bancroft, it is an à la carte style meal, meaning you order sides separately and usually a few for the table. We had the carrots (one of the specials), roasted potatoes, and creamed spinach. Forgot to say when you order meat, you also get to pick two sauces - and before anything while you wait they bring you some rolls and butter. The rolls started us off on the right foot knowing the meal was going to be phenomenal. They were warm with some sea salt on top and baked to perfection. The steak was mouth watering, juicy, and flavorful. The sauces added a great touch, and the sides were wonderful. It is safe to say, we did not leave hungry! As mentioned, while tomahawk is said to serve two, we had a lot of leftovers so of course we got those packed up to go. They were very considerate with the packaging, putting items in different boxes that made sense. We unfortunately did not have room for dessert but I'm sure it would've been awesome. The Bancroft is definitely a higher scale restaurant so it is on the pricer side, but it is justified. The food tastes great, presentation is there, and service is excellent. It's a great place for special occasions, celebrations, or just because as long as you know what to expect... but with prices today, I'd rather pay this and have it be worth it than what a crappy meal is costing today! read more

This review is a little late in coming. It's based on a meal I had there in the spring of this year. I went for a special occasion meal knowing that The Bancroft had never disappointed me before. Unfortunately, this last time was a real let down. I'm reviewing the prime steak au poivre specifically. Generally, I'm a big fan and I was intrigued by the menu description listing red wine + bone marrow. Again, big fan of both. Remarkably, the combination of things that I really like was not very good at all. The steak itself was cooked perfectly. However, the red wine sauce was sickly sweet. Its cloying flavor really ruined the experience. What a shame, and for $70 too! I won't be ordering that again. My advice to the chef, change the dish to a more traditional green peppercorn sauce. Some things are traditional for good reason, so it's best not to mess with them. The red wine sauce just didn't work, at least not to my palate. It was overpowering and detracted, rather than enhanced, the steak. Or maybe offer it as an option as I'm sure that there are some people who like the sugary wine sauce. Not me. My companion also did not like it and thought it was too sweet, so maybe it's not just me after all. I've been since, but for lunch, which was great as usual. read more

Came here for a work dinner with coworkers and was thoroughly impressed. Started out with a Drop Anchor cocktail, a tiki styled rum drink with passion fruit, clove, and cinnamon, the warmth of which was welcome given the cold and rain going on outside. From there, we went through a handful of appetizers and sides, the jumbo lump crab cake, a fig and prosciutto board, roasted garlic fingerling potatoes, and the sautéed local mushrooms (my favorite of the bunch). I was stewing on which entree to get and our waiter did a good job on selling me on the carnaroli lobster risotto, something rich and savory, and I figured it wouldn't be a trip to New England without getting seafood. Even after all this food, all of us managed to find space to split a banana coconut roulade (the cake itself being average, but with a fantastic coconut gelato on top) and an Irish cream cheesecake (fitting given this was the day before St Patricks day). Seafood tower was good. Rib Eye steak was average at best - very salt about 1/2 inch thin. We had gone to Bancroft several years ago and really liked it. It is a splurge kind of place so we don't go that often. We went on New Year's Eve and boy was it great. I rarely give five stars but this place deserves it. The atmosphere was as it should be, a restaurant, not a New Year's Eve sports bar. It started off with great dinner rolls that you could eat a hundred of. We also had a nice house Canernet Sauvignon. Appetizer was a seafood tower (oysters, shrimp, lobster). A great start. My wife had a filet mignon and fries, I had a rib eye (I never have any other steak) and Brussels sprouts. Everything was absolutely delicious, an absolute riot of flavor. If I could change two things, I wish they had a bone-in ribeye and I would pass on the red wine salt. A little TOO salty. I topped it off with cappuccino. We skipped dessert as they would have had to roll us out of there. Price pre-tip- $245. Worth every penny. This a great steakhouse and loke I said, I almost never give five stars. I've dined at a number of the fancy steakhouses - Capital Grille, Moo, Morton's, Ruth's Chris, etc., but last week we had dinner here on a Monday night and I had the prime rib eye and it was the best steak I think I've ever had. It was cooked perfectly and had a number of sauces to choose from (I had the roquefort butter and it was great). The creamed spinach side was delish with a fried egg on top as were the creamy mashed potatoes. The meal was so rich, I brought half home and enjoyed it a second time, warming the steak in the oven. We were actually shocked by how she spoke to us. Worked in the restaurant industry for many years and could not believe the gall of her. Spoke to the GM about it and she said she'd follow up to make it right - and not surprisingly, never did. Save yourself the trouble. I never thought I'd say it, but this is a family friendly high end steakhouse. I've been here for a date night and more recently for a Father's Day lunch with my two small kids and both experiences were fantastic. Space is beautiful, but still comfortable and not intimidating. Staff is very friendly and attentive. The meal starts with incredible warm salty rolls and fresh butter which are to die for. Cocktails are fresh and well balanced. The kids menu here is small but very well executed and includes a starter, main, dessert, and beverage. The steaks are always great and their burger is incredible, tastes like a backyard burger on a warm summer day, very nostalgic and tasty. Went there tonight for bday party. We ordered a ton of items, and they wouldn't let me take the bernaise sauce home. Not even a dollop. They start you off with nice and warm sweet rolls with salt sprinkled on top - I thought they were really good. We got the seafood platter for two and clam chowder to start. The platter was pretty good, not my favorite. Same with the chowder, it was really plain and surprisingly had no flavor. It just tasted like a cream soup with a hint of clam, but mostly potato. For entrees we got the ribeye and salmon, with mushrooms, asparagus, and fingerling potatoes as sides. I want to start off by saying the steak was sooooooo good. The flavor and how it was cooked was perfect. And my favorite side was the mushrooms. We only did the single serving but it was huge still. Now onto the meh choices which was the salmon. I wanted to be healthy and got the salmon - much regret. The flavor wasn't there, I was pretty disappointed. And the fingerling potatoes had no flavor either, it was barely a hint of rosemary. Came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon with a reservation, but given how many parties were there at such a large restaurant, I would say we didn't need one. The space is huge, but I would say maybe 1/3 tables were full - probably just a lunch thing though, I would expect the space to fill up a lot for dinner. The menu for lunch was very small in my opinion with not too many options, but we each settled on our dishes relatively quickly. Our server was nice, but super unattentive in my opinion. We were seated right behind their event room at a booth, making it very hard I think to flag down anyone as someone would have to be walking down the aisle of booth seating to even see us. This made ordering, asking for more water, and getting the check very difficult. The sangria I got was nice, pretty light but relatively flavorful. The chowder was pretty delicious and I enjoyed the larger crackers. The oysters were fine enough- size wise decent and not too bad. The steak was really well cooked I think and was definitely a good entree dish. The fries it came with were yummy as well! Lastly, the desserts were great - really big and delicious while not being overly sweet. Overall, the service left a bit to be desired, but the high quality of food outweighed this small con. I would be curious to see the space for dinner as I'd picture it being busier - would the service be better or worse with more people? Also I would love to see the dinner menu - seems like the most popular dishes on Yelp weren't available for lunch! read more
