I've waited to review Matchbox Coffee because I wanted to make sure that it wasn't a fluke that this was my all-time favorite place. On this visit, it'd likely been my 4th or 5th time here for coffee. And, the trip is a little hike from the northernmost suburbs. But, absolutely worth every mile and dollar! Every time I visit Matchbox Coffee, I never order from the menu. I've asked every time for the employees to pick something special and make it up. I've had something vanilla, something lavender, and something hazelnut. I've never enjoyed my cup of coffee more! And the employees love putting their touch on it which I love. This quaint little coffee shop is employee owned and run so well! There's some regulars that sit inside and chat, but it's never too loud and never too crowded at any one particular point I've been there. I'd recommend this to anyone that wants to find a great small coffee shop, a great cup of coffee, and a local business to contribute to. I'll make the trek to be back again, and again.

COFFEE: I had a caramel latte (classic), and my partner had a cold brew latte (how cool)! We both agreed the quality of coffee was good, but I would love to see some more flavors on the menu! SERVICE: I absolutely loved how everyone that came into the coffee shop new the barista, as you could tell it was a 'homey' and friendly place to be!! AMBIANCE: If you are looking for a sit down coffee shop, I would say that this is more of a to go vibe, as it is extremely small on the inside. But it is also a cute nook if you are looking to cozy up with a good book. LOCATION/PARKING: Great location next to other shops and restaurants in northeast, and parking was easy to find!

Finally made it to Matchbox. Cute little coffee shop in NE. There is one table you could sit at otherwise it mostly seems like a pick up and go sip it somewhere else type of place. There were some baked goods for sale as well. Lots of good drink options. I tried the "best cold press in town" and it was very smooth and did not disappoint. Excited to go back and try the homemade chai. They DO accept credit cards now. Give them a try!

Every neighborhood deserves a Matchbox Coffee Shop. It's small and cozy but vibrant. You've probably seen their heart neon sign by Dangerous Man... so stop on in... with CASH because they're cash-only! The space is small, I think there's literally one table and a couple barstools, maybe, but they also have a patio which is repainted. Their chalkboard menu offers caffeinated classics, and my favorite is the Thai Coffee (iced). They're not over-fussy or over-priced. There's a fridge with soft drinks and kombucha, and they sell local baked goods. Other tidbits: 1) They host an annual Summer Solstice Party where they're open overnight. 2) You can open a tab. 3) Again, cash only!

Cozy and intimate space. Good coffee and music. Friendly staff all around. A coffee shop I want to be in. Would love to read a book in here one day.

I'm on a matcha tea latte kick and the one they made me was very tasty. The barista took care to make to my a bit too particular specifications. Be advised that it isn't named Matchbox for nothing and is cozy bordering on tiny.

This NE coffee shop stands out from the crowd! But watch out it's cash only! Nonetheless, going to the ATM will be worth it. This is the only local shop that I've stumbled on that offers real Thai Iced Coffee. If you've been to south east Asia and long for a return to their coffee flavors, or if you wish you could visit SE Asia, pop in here! No sweetener needed the condensed milk brings all the flavor you'll want! It's a corky very hippie, hipster m, chill, relaxed vibe-ish spot, do not expect a clean cut Starbucks feel. Instead, come and look at the art, plant: and chill atmosphere provided in this tiny spot! It can get cramped, so wait your turn to stay socially distant; there's no seating out front but the local shops with in walking distance provide ample viewing pleasure to stroll and window shop. The staff wear masks and and are very friendly; they were even super kind when I didn't realize it was cash only and fumbled to try and get the amount needed. If you like NE you'll like this coffee shop; stop in and check it out.

*cash only*! a small, eclectic coffee shop in northeast :) they allow dogs inside and had dog treats! i got an iced vanilla latte with oat milk and it was decent. i think i'll try the cold brew latte next time. friendly service and a back patio with various seating options. they didn't have any vegan food options in stock when i visited so i hope to snag one when available.

Good lighting and not too loud. They have all of the usual coffee options as well as several of their own concoctions. They have pastries as well as more hearty options like breakfast burritos, although when we went they were out of burritos, probably because we were there so late. They have several gluten free items, and vegan items. It looks like everything that can be sourced locally is local, and they have the providers listed on the menu. They are obviously very socially and environmentally conscious. The servers were very friendly. I had a cold press with cream which was excellent, exactly what I hoped it would be, good coffee flavor. Next time I would probably ask for less cream, but it is real cream. I also had the morning bun which was very good. It was like a cinnamon roll that was also rolled in cinnamon and sugar on the outside. My partner had a red eye which was dark roast and espresso with cream. He liked it very much. He also had a ham and cheese croissant and an apple fritter, both of which were very good. Parking is street parking which wasn't a problem when we were there but may be a problem at busier times. The interior is handicapped friendly, but again parking could be an issue. We loved it and will definitely be back.

There was only one person ahead of me, which gave me just enough time to peruse the menu on the wall, figure out where the WiFi password was listed, and break down my will enough to order that gorgeous-looking apple fritter at the top of the bakery shelf. The barista quickly assembled my large maple latte in an orange-yellow mug with that apple fritter that was calling my name, plus a large breakfast burrito. The burrito was more like an enclosed panini with sides of salsa and sour cream. While I ate 2/3rds of it, I cannot say that I enjoyed it all that much, especially for the $13 price. On the other hand, the maple latte and apple fritter were divine, if a little over-priced (although, what isn't, nowadays?). The power and Internet for the neighborhood just went out in the middle of this review, so I'm finishing through my phone hot-spot and will head on my way!

I liked how the egg salad and cucumbers balanced out the butteriness and crispiness of the croissant! It was a very filling lunch. I came with my sister and we both got different teas. She enjoyed her hojicha tea with a bit of syrup added. I really liked the Po cha / Tibetan tea which was a buttery milky tea. It definitely woke me up. :) I would recommend if you are someone who likes not too sweet, nutty, and not too bitter teas. We both enjoyed the Tibetan momos -- the meat filling ones are definitely soupier which was enjoyable. The veggie dumplings tasted better with more of the chili crisp oil. The mochi ice cream most likely used the ones from MyMochi packs but the cream was nice to have and it was a fun sweet treat! Definitely would come back with family or friends when visiting the cities again. Drinks we got at the front where we ordered but they brought food for us which was nice since we decided to stay in to eat lunch. Seems like it's a nice place to study and work and they have WiFi. The place is nicely decorated with Tibetan decor and plaques talking about the history/background which was cool. There is also better lighting / lamps along the walls if you're studying and need it.

I also loved the individual task lights above the smaller tables. It's a small detail, but it made the space feel really thoughtful. The only downside is that there isn't much natural light, so the cafe can feel a little dark, especially toward the back. The staff was the biggest disappointment. They weren't rude, but they came across as pretty standoffish, which made the experience feel less welcoming than the space itself. I ordered the light roast coffee and, unfortunately, it was pretty terrible. That said, the menu is huge with lots of different drinks and food options, so I'm sure there's something on it that would be a much better choice. I also didn't try any of the pastries, but they looked absolutely massive and definitely caught my attention. Overall, I really wanted to like this place more. The atmosphere is great and it seems like an excellent spot to work or relax for a while, but the coffee and less than welcoming service left me a little underwhelmed. I'd be willing to give it another shot and try something different from the menu.

We ended up all getting one of the seasonal specials the spumoni (lavender honey latte) and we all really enjoyed our drink. They also have a wide variety of pastries from if you local spots including Marc Heu, which is awesome as going to the actual location can be a bit of a nightmare with long lines. The barista were all very friendly and were churning out orders quickly. There is some construction going on in the area right now so you do have to loop around a little bit which is a little confusing, but there is a huge parking lot with tons of available parking Another huge perk as it is also on the coffee compass pass - I'm already planning to go back tomorrow to use that BOGO deal :)
