Cool cafe - nice to enjoy alone or with friends. They serve good coffee, pastries, breakfast items, and midday snacks. This is a order at cashier spot with no table service so they meet my simple expectations for their service with decent politeness, accuracy and efficiency. Plus i find it convenient that they open as early as 7am. Some of my usual purchases here are the matcha drinks, chocolate croissants and earl grey muffins. I give 5 stars to their matcha and I recommend trying their sipping matcha drink if you are a matcha lover like me. They are quite spacious and you can work on your laptop here but it can get busy. It's not my first choice as study/work cafe because I prefer cafes with quiet corners with outlets or relaxing soft music and I find this spot has more of a hipster ambiance and is more ideal as a chill place for hanging out. Hmm, maybe come here to reply work emails but why overwork here when its vibes are set for unwinding ;-) There are side street parking available -- being able to park close by is a plus. Cafes in location with free parking options are the best, so you can buy items to go or you can choose to stay and relax, without the hassles of metered parking expiring and getting parking tickets. I've been to matchsticks before and in various locations and always for takeaway. Their baked goods are usually great and their coffee is ok. I actually did some digging and self reflection before writing this as this was some weeks back that I tried to sit with my initials reaction. Popped in around 3pm on a weekday as I was in the area to pick up an americano and some pastries. The 5 minutes that I was around the counter and the interaction between myself and staff (one barista and one cashier) was odd. I made myself sit in a corner to sit with my own feelings post interaction. I'm not going to spend more time ruminating that encounter in detail. However, if one googles the signs and ideology of what a hipster is. I've received pure negative stereotype of a hipster. I found the cashier to me cold and smidge condescending, the barista didn't even acknowledge me, ignored my question and is clearly not deaf or blind when he was calling other patrons drink orders out. This poor Canadian even muttered an accidental thank you when I picked up my drink out of habit. That last one is one me. My 1st world problem of "to be me and be kind to others or straight out be reactionary when put in such situation is going to have me ready for my next battle with a passive aggrissive hipster at their work. ding ding let the battle commence. Very inviting shop (lots of seating and appealing, earthy design) with friendly baristas. I visited once years ago and remember having a delicious lunch. Today I tried the lemon raspberry muffin and an iced horchata latte (seasonal). The muffin was fantastic: fresh, warm and soft. The latte was also good; the horchata syrup definitely evoked the cinnamon-y horchata flavour without being too sweet and the drink was very smooth. What a cute, little coffee shop on this super cute stretch of Kingsway/15th. The restaurant interior is small but clean and inviting, with an elongated wood table running the length of the shop and a few individual, small bistro tables and chairs along the wall. The selection of foods and beverages is decent (not huge, but one would be hard-pressed not to find something they'd like). My friend and I were starving for lunch so she ordered some sort of bowl with poached eggs, and I ordered a breakfast sandwich with bacon. I liked how they serve their breakfast foods all day. (They also had some nice-looking sandwiches in the display case, too). We also both ordered coffees. My breakfast sandwich was terrific and, despite the usual ingredients, it tasted different due to some magical condiment in there. It had smokey sweet undertones I've not had before. Quite delicious. My vanilla latte was amazingly good, too - probably one of the best I every had. I liked how the barista also did some frothy milk latte art on the top. (If I were smarter, I'd have taken a photo of it. It really was quite beautiful). My friend loved her food and coffee as well. After lunch nearby, we decided to drop into Matchstick Coffee Roasters to grab a bag of coffee beans for a friend. They're nestled right in between Osteria Savio Volpe and Les Faux Bourgeois. They also have two other locations (Main Street and East Georgia Street). We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 1:15pm) and it was busy. A continuous stream of people coming in to grab a coffee. The inside is gorgeous with a lot of open spaces, different areas to sit/work at and chill vibes all around. Love the tiny sitting tables outside. Coffee menu is split into espresso, batch/cold brew, feature pour over, pour overs and summer sodas. There's also tea for the non-coffee drinkers. For food, they sell their own bread and pastries (croissants, cookies, cinnamon buns) along with a few kitchen eats. - The Bulldog - No. 29 ($16.75) - we bought a bag of beans as a gift for a friend. You get a FREE drink included with your purchase. Sweet. - Pour over ($4.00) - B went with the mirador/Guatemala. Better than I anticipated: smooth with hints of almond, honey and black cherry. Lovely place to grad a bite and coffee. The breakfast sandwich was nice but a little sweet for my taste. The coffee was great and the staff was nice. The place has charm and nice little spots to sit. Supporting local roasters is just a habit I've seen to acquire especially when it comes to traveling. I decided to plop in solely to grab some fresh coffee beans to take back to the States. The store itself is like any other hip and modern coffee shop. Simple designs and laid back furniture. The place was vibrant and filled with people either on their electronics or some who were actually socializing with one another (which to me seems rare these days, SMH). I was surprised to see all the different kinds of coffee beans they offered. After a few minutes of scanning and reviewing all the options, I finally chose the bag with the tasting notes that best suited my preferences at that particular moment. Most bags just recently roasted within a few days too. I ask the lady behind the counter to confirm if the beans are roasted locally. She cheerfully replied, "Yes! We actually roast the beans at the back of the store. You can go back there and have a look if you like." Excellent. She also informed me that purchasing a bag of coffee beans comes with practically any drink item on their menu. I went with my normal, which is a simple latte. A bag of coffee beans and a drink for under $20 USD. Not too shabby at all. I brought the beans home and whipped out the Hario for the pour over method. As expected, the coffee was legit. There's no doubt that I plan to stop at Matchstick again when I'm back across the northern border to take home some of their fine, locally roasted coffee beans. People seemed to rave their pastries which I didn't have a chance to try. It was literally a quick stop to grab some beans before flying home. Definitely, looking forward to coming back. read more

Good coffee can start your day with energy and makes you feel like alive. That is what we came here for. A clean, bright, elegant cafe shop was filled with people with happy faces. They offered not only pastries in the window but also the real food on the menu. We ordered latte and chocolate croissant and they were delicious. We came here for an iced coffee and bought a bottle of Seltzer water in a hot afternoon. Both were great! This coffee shop was quite comfortable. They had two cashiers. The counter was huge having a lot of space for people to stand and wait for their coffee. We found a bench at the end of the coffee shop. We sat there, enjoyed our drinks and chatted. It was quite comfortable. Some people came here to work or study or had a cup of coffee with their friends. The iced coffee that I ordered was quite strong, so I added some cream to it. It was good! The bottle of Seltzer was quite big, cold and carbonated. Very cool! This is a good coffee shop around this neighbourhood. This one is no different, with wood everywhere, a "steel" vault door décor, and generous seating for the space, I think this qualifies as a Vancouver coffee shop. They have good cookies, and by good, I mean big. Their coffee (the Americano I had) was good, nothing to write home about flavor wise but solid. I realize I'm writing home on yelp about it, but what give this place 4 stars is the service and quality. Overpriced pastries are nothing new in Vancouver. I have grown accustomed - and fully expect - to paying $4-5 per pastry when I go to a shop and add something savoury to go with my coffee. But unfortunately, the pastries at Matchstick just. aren't. that. good. In fact, I would go so far as to say they're bad. I ordered a variety (was picking up for 6 people), spent over $50 including tip, and got nothing for my trouble except a bunch of half-eaten pastries that nobody wanted. It was an unforgettable experience, because it's hard to imagine how any store could mess up pastry. I wasn't planning to review this store (my experience with them is from several months ago). I usually don't like giving negative scores to a small business, however, after seeing how the managers abuse their staff, that is no longer an issue for me. On the plus side, my latte was all right. Always can count on the original matchstick for quality and consistency. Happy they had an abundant supply of croissants at 3pm on a weekday! The chocolate hazelnut croissant was a decadent dessert-like indulgence. It's a must try but I would probably stick with the classic croissant next time as it was a little too heavy for me (and my thighs!) as a snack. Or perhaps sharing it with a friend would justify it! I don't think they are roasting their own beans yet, but it seems that is coming soon. I sampled the espresso and a pain au chocolat. The espresso tasted like they had too light of a stop to me. It was a bit watery and was much tanner than a properly pulled shot normally would be. That resulted in a fairly weak taste overall. Granted, I tend towards preferring the dark stop side of things, so for some this may be a taste they are ok with. Where there's smoke there's fire. Matchstick Coffee Roasters opened it's doors January 20th, much to the delight of Vancouver coffee geeks. Opening day was a hit, when I arrived around 2pm, they were sold out of all the baked goods they'd posted on Twitter, and had run out of macchiato cups. That's a good sign on opening day, not something to complain about. With local coffee veterans behind the bar, and soon, in front of the roaster, Matchstick is sure to be an instant neighbourhood hit. It's beautiful interior is simple and classic, with an embracing communal table as the primary sitting area, alongside smaller tables in the large front south facing window. With high ceilings, bright walls, and warm wood finishings in a space this clean and uncluttered, you'll notice the details. Right down to the refurbished vintage Bose speakers above the bar. Your parent's basement never had it so good. The espresso machine has a forest green custom paint job, but don't let it's not so flashy look fool you. With an owner behind the bar, you know you're getting dedication to the craft. Serving Phil & Sebastian Coffee, a Roaster from Calgary until the gas is installed to fire up their very own roaster, my single origin Guatemalan macchiato was excellent. Sweet, brighter than I'd expected, and served to the standards of some of the best in the city. With a slow brew bar reminiscent of Revolver Coffee, and not an electric brewer in sight, you know there's only good things to come. Take the time to get to know your Barista, they're full of knowledge, passionate about what they do, and come from some of your favourite local cafes. So the other day I came in here crying. That's right...crying. Straight balling my eyes out. And attempted to order a beer. The male barista (bless his soul,) gave me the warmest smile and asked me if I was doing okay. You know what he said? "I know it's corny but...whatever it is you're going through, just know that you can't have the good times without the bad." Corny it was, but you know what? It brought a smile to face. Americano was sour, rather light in colour, and disappointingly weak. Should have gotten the Honduras instead. There is also a sandwich menu available. Nice to see some options. Not sure if it was the time of day I went but there was only a limited selection of baked goods in the glass case. Could not help but notice that the croissants were a bit too burnt to the point that they looked like plops of cartoon dog poop, sadly. They would have been better off redoing the batch. Found this place during a recent visit to the area. The Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood is quite interesting as there is clearly some kind of transition happening here. This little strip of restaurants, we have dubbed, "Hipster Row" 'cause good golly. Okay, getting out of my urban sociologist armchair. Matchstick vibe was very good. Not sure how local it is, but the local folks are def there. A good blend of seating options, brightly lit, and good noise level. I particularly like the long table, but then again, I'm a sucker for community spaces. We had the latte, macchiato, chocolate croissant, and wait for it . . . an earl grey muffin with sourdough crumbles. All were quite good, so they are taking the coffee craft seriously. Only down side is that there doesn't seem to be any/many power outlets if you want to hang out and work. Great experience -- if I lived in the area, I could def see this as a hang-out. read more

I stumbled upon this coffee place when I was looking for a good independent coffee place in Vancouver to try. It was sort of hard to recognize on the outside as there isn't a big sign. There is free parking in front of the restaurant and we were lucky enough to get a space. There weren't many seats inside the place and we had to wait a bit for people to finish. However, their iced americano and harvest salad were good. I really liked the aftertaste of the americano and the salad also had a great combination of vegetables (eg yellow beets, arugula, goat cheese) that paired well together. I love to think Im a wannabe hipster at heart and not ashamed of it, so I love places like Matchstick coffee roasters. Im a coffee lover / addict and how am I just being introduced to this place!!!? I hesitated on giving this place 5 stars but came here originally for the double baked almond croissant and they were sold out (sad face) but another reason to come back. But defiantly a strong 4 stars. I parked across the street and I was already excited. I entered and coffee heaven welcomed me. Pretty busy on a Friday early afternoon, people working, hanging out, talking.... I love people watching, not in a stocker kind of way. So I ordered my almond milk latte and butter croissant. Amazing! I sat on a lounge chair and enjoyed my treat. Even though it was busy, it wasn't too loud or crowded, still felt like a peaceful place, where if you're by yourself you can still enjoy a cup of joe without a care in the world. Came here after a dinner with some friends. It's really nice inside and thy have two Bose speakers hanging from the ceiling. My friends got London fog lattes. I enjoyed that they still made latte art on this drink because many other joints in 604 don't for tea lattes. I liked the atmosphere, it was open and relaxed. I was here to work today and instead of coffee, I had a really nice sencha. It is certainly a great atmosphere to be working in this space. That said, as soon as 3:30pm hits, there were a lot more foot traffic with family and kids. I just never thought this place as kids friendly but everyone is welcome of course.
