Passed by this place a couple of years ago and made a mental note to stop in and give them a try. Well, that try finally came yesterday. Very clean establishment. Service was efficient and attentive without being intrusive. For drinks, had a nice bottle of Portuguese dry red wine ($25) and my better half had a Cosmo ($15), which she found on the sweet side. Prior to out appetizers, a small basket of warm bread was brought to the table. For appetizers we shared the shrimp in garlic sauce ($16) and the grilled squid, also in garlic sauce ($16). We even tried their homemade hot sauce. All good stuff. For the mains, I had the T-Bone Steak (medium rare) ($35) and my better half had the lamb shank ($24). Both were hearty portions and very good. I visited Matteo's on 4/28/26, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but inside there's a full bar and a more formal dining area. My sister and I started with a chicken soup, which was actually really good and one of the highlights of the meal. For our appetizer, we ordered the grilled octopus. It came cut up in an olive oil-style sauce, which is different from how I'm used to having it served. It wasn't a favorite. For the entrée, we ordered a mixed meat platter (steak, pork, chicken, lamb, Portuguese sausage) with mashed potatoes and spinach. The food was very hit or miss. The lamb, chicken, and pork were good, but the steak was tough and chewy. The mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a box, and overall the food lacked seasoning--I had to add salt and pepper just to bring out flavor. My sister did enjoy her Hennessy sidecar. I will say, the bartender was nice, which I appreciated. The biggest issue was cleanliness. The bathroom in the bar area smelled very musty, it had a urinal, toilet and a dead water bug next to the toilet, which was extremely off-putting because it is next to the kitchen. I reported it immediately. The second bathroom in the dining area was cleaner but clearly outdated. Even with an "A" grade posted, that experience raised serious concerns. To make matters worse, on the way home I developed stomach pain, heartburn, and I had an allergic reaction--I had to take both antacids and Benadryl. After that, we ended up throwing the food away--what a complete waste of money. To be honest, nothing was taken off the bill despite reporting the issue. Another thing to note: they charge more if you use a credit card and less if you pay cash, and this was not clearly disclosed or posted anywhere that I could see. Overall, this was not a good experience. Between the lackluster food, cleanliness concerns, how I felt afterward, unexpected charges, and lack of accountability, I will not be returning. The area of the restaurant is not convenient for parking, however I would highly recommend finding one even if its a few blocks away, in order to dine here! I have often viewed this place on yelp and other restaurant location apps but never took the chance. I almost regret this! This place is a gem! I got out of work earlier in Friday and arrived with a friend and was able to have an early access to a lobster dinner that ends at 5pm. When we walked in, there is a long bar on the left side and we met Sofia, who ended up being our server. She has the nicest personality and we immediately felt at home here. We were escorted to the dining area which was a nice size, then I realized they have a full banquet area which holds about 50 people. We were brought warm bread which we attacked. As I mentioned, I had the lobster dinner for $25, and my friend had the linguine with seafood (seafood fra diavolo), which had lobster parts, clams, mussels, calamari in a delicious sauce. Luckily we saved a couple of the breads and used them to dip in the sauce. Paula was bussing tables and was also so very pleasant to converse. We also ordered a small pitcher of sangria which was so delicious also. Let me tell you, if you dont come here to dine, you are missing out. Plus the servers are knowledgeable with the menu are and are so welcoming. I have found a neighborhood restaurant that I will frequent more often! Returned on a Wednesday night a couple of months later. The daily specials changed and they added a few things like, split pea soup, which was amazing, they had a stewed chicken on a bed of linguine and carrots, also very good and the had a salmon stuffed with crab meat. We usually order takeout from here, but came in for an early Friday dinner with my husband while the kids were at their grandparents, and we're so glad we did. We were seated right away in a dining room that's separate from the bar, which made for a more relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The service was incredibly friendly and welcoming from the start. The Portuguese wine was great at just $8 for a generous glass or $25 for a bottle. For apps, we started with the cold lobster cocktail $24 and lamb chops $25, both packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. For our main, we had the steamed lobster $28, which was fresh, tender, and delicious. Everything was done just right, and the prices across the board were very reasonable. Mateus has been a staple restaurant in the Queens Village neighborhood. I haven't been in a while but decided it was the perfect venue to host my daughter's holy communion luncheon. Sofia was a pleasure to work with and made the process simple. For the party I opted for the 4 course dinner package. The appetizers were delicious all my guests raved about the garlic shrimp. For the main course guest had a choice between steak, chicken Marsala, salmon and eggplant parmigiana. The mains were nice portion size and everyone raved about the food. I would definitely recommend them for hosting events. I'm looking forward to coming to just dine from the regular menu. read more

Uber eats from here and was pleased with the way the food was packaged. Ordered broiled salmon yellow rice and veggies. Lamb chops ,tostones and for dessert crème brûlée and tres leches cake. The visual of the food had me excited for my meal. The lamb chops were very underwhelming but edible. The tostones tasted like they were fried in old oil and the garlic/oil also tasted very old not fresh at all. Now for the disappointment.. even though my lamb meal was not the greatest I thought things would get better with the crème brûlée (my fav) .. unfortunately that was not the case.. the crème brûlée burnt sugar on top didn't even crunch.. the custard was runny.. seems like it was old.. real old. This review is about the service. on the afternoon of Saturday, March 28 at approximately 4:15pm after attending an event at Antuns, 8 of us decided to come to this bar to have a drink. There were 4 customers and one waitress/bartender seated at the bar. We came up to the bar to be seated two of the customers saw our group wouldn't have enough space to be together and offered to move over a few seats so we could fit. While they were making room the staff member who was eating at the bar moved her seat to the side so we thought she was helping with seating because we were instructed to take to seats from a table next to the bar to pull over to accommodate the 8 of us. Prior to all the chair movement I inquired about the tables in the other room and was told it was for dining only, so we were making it work. The employee who moved the chair told us she is eating so apparently when she moved the chair it was for herself not us, fine we can still have a drink and enjoy each others company but the tone from both ladies working that afternoon wasn't pleasant. The person who suggested we go to this location asked by name if a certain employee (I can't recall the name) was in today and the women behind the bar did a sarcastic look around and said "I don't see him" it was at this point I said let's go. Two of our party had already ordered so they paid their tab and we drove to a another location and had a great time, the time we wanted after coming from a woman's history award brunch. Planning a surprise birthday dinner for my dad's 80th birthday was something of a nerve-wracking experience, but the manager was kind and patient, making the restaurant portion of the process as easy as could be. There were a few different levels of menu and bar options, as well as a kids menu, which I definitely appreciated since our invitee list was almost one-third children. Putting down an initial deposit to hold the event space in the back, I was able to confirm the final number of guests later the week, and everything went as smoothly as could be. The sangria was a huge hit, along with the crabcakes and calamari. The salmon was tasty, the steak was plentiful and the chicken was delicious. The paella, which we've had on previous occasions, was exquisite. Overall, the service was excellent. All the food came out quickly, hot and delicious. The event space itself was elegant without being gaudy, and it was low-key enough that our casual crowd didn't look out of place. Everyone enjoyed themselves and thanked us for a wonderful event, and I have to give a lot of that credit to the wait staff. I would return for a dinner or an event in a heartbeat! read more

In honor of my late Portuguese blend mother-in-law. We celebrated my eldest high school graduation. I booked the party room for 20 but only 15 were in attendance. Traffic was an issue on the Friday afternoon. I brought in sparkling cider for the toast as she is not yet 18. No issue with the bottle service charge. She was great at getting orders in the moment people arrived. She had even asked if we wanted to order appetizers ahead of our gathering. The cuisunecwss prepared upon ordering for a fresh hot delicious meal preceeded by a household and Portuguese rolls on the table. I had lobster ravioli and was quite happy with it. We bought in a red velvet cake from a custom baker which was cut, served and distributed in excellent fashion. Wonderful time was had by all. Great food, great people make a great time. read more

The size of Mateus's delivery menu is truly astounding, so it took some time to decide. Delivery seafood may sound risky, but we liked everything we got. The branzino was good - not the meatiest I've ever had but was filling. The fried scallops were a little rubbery/over cooked, but the breading was good. We were a little bummed that corn was the vegetable of the day, but that's not their fault. (Maybe I'd call ahead next time to find out what the veggie is.) As many times I been here, i am surprise I did not write a review. First thing they give you after you order is a basket of warm bread with butter. Delicious especially the one with the raisins! I really love this place because the menu is extensive and the prices are good. My favorite thing on the menu is the lobster. They have a special where you can get 1.5 lb lobster for 19.99 and it come with 2 sides. You can get it steamed or broiled. Pay a little more and you can get it stuffed with crabmeat.....yum! Other dished we like... Stuffed shrimps, Grilled octopus, broiled seafood platter. The steaks also look amazing but we have not tried it yet. Portions are huge so bring your appetite. Oh...the drinks here are also very good...Magaritas, capiriña, pina coladas..they have it all and its all good. They have a small room in the back that is perfect for a group. I did go attend a group function in the back room and everything was server family style. Again huge portions. I have ordered several times and was very satisfied. However, today has been frustrating. When I called to report that my salad was missing, I was told to hold on while the young lady checked with the kitchen. When she returned she informed me that the kitchen said they sent it. We'll, Just because they say it, I will never know if they put it in the wrong bag. Nobody reports getting extra items. I ordered lobster dinners for my birthday. She refused to consider compensating me or even sending another salad. Then she annoyingly said that there is nothing she can do. After spending $60, you would think she would attempt to make amends. Mind you, the bag was sealed when it arrived, so it wasn't removed. This is poor customer service and I shutter to think what would have happened if 1 of my lobster dinners was missing. The ambiance is old and tired as is the neighborhood. Expectations low. What a pleasant surprise. My wife said her paella was the best she ever had. I had mixed seafood in garlic sauce (rice was a side dish). Superb. Service friendly. Noise level allowed easy conversation. Dinner comes with a nice bread basket and a large salad. We shard a half pitcher of sangria (which easily could have served four). Dinner with dessert, tax and tip for the two of us was $92. Had a great time last night while visiting one of our favorite portuguese restaurants. Props to the management for their department of sanitation Grade A inspection as of Jan 2018. Maria and sofia are 2 of the servers that are usually always there the lunch and dinner service. The wife wanted lobster, i wanted grilled shrimp stuffed with crab meat and well my daughter ordered the grilled octopus, everything was delicious. IMO, the shrimp with crabmeat was certainly the most difficult to accomplish in full form. The shrimp were succulent, nixe grill marks, well seasoned and very large in size. Let me just say that this place does not skimp out on the portion size. My platter came with a side salad, rice and a side of broccoli. I ate the whole thing. I suppose that is why we did not order appetizers. While i like lobster and my wife swears by their lobsters as being an excellent buy ($20 lunch special and $25.99 dinner special) and i agree 100%. I just was not in the mood to crack, pull and wrestle with my food. Naturally, i started my evening with a capiriña. This is like their version of a mojito and let me just give you a word of advise, this drink can creep up on you if you have more than 2. There was just no room for dessert. The grilled octoous was also delicious and it came witg a side of garlic butter which was very tasty and well seasoned. Sometimes octopus can be overcooked and it gets tough, not here. read more

I have been to this restaurant several times . My friends live near by and go there often. Food is good. And good wine. Today the waitress was taking our order at the bar. Four of us. this "unhappy" waiter wanted her to drop us like flies and run to serve someone else. They need to learn that all Customers are as important. And if we were being served it was our time to be served. It was an uncomfortable moment because the waiter kept yelling at our waitress for serving us. Perhaps he was bias because we were four men . We spent $300 at this place and after telling this story to the owner, he didn't care. I WILL NEVER GO BACK HERE. I suggest to think about it before going there. I was looking for a good place for paella. After reading reviews from a few restaurants, we decided to try Mateus. We ordered baked clams, paella valencia for two, grilled chicken and shrimp with red cabbage and beans, and an order of chicken and rice. The baked clams were ok. They chop up the clam and mix it with the stuffing. I rather have whole clams with stuffing on top of it. The paella valencia for two could feed four people. We were so surprised at how much food they gave. The seafood was cooked perfectly and tasted sweet. It was so good. The other two dishes were really good and tasty also. I would go back and order again. I highly recommend you give them a try. I didn't even get a chance to take pictures because we were so hungry. Next time, I'll remember to take pics. read more
