The most dishonest jeweler of all on 47th Street. At least, with the others, you know what to expect. They appear impatient and shrewd but this man fools you with his mild-manners (his wife is an entirely other story). We ended up purchasing a $30,000 diamond solitaire from him. It was a big ticket item and trusted him. While the deal was being finalized between him and my husband, I noticed the GIA certificate mentioned the diamond had a "indented natural". I asked him what this meant and he replied with "oh it's just an inclusion" casually and walked away. So we paid and went home with the stone. That same evening, I noticed what felt like a chip in the girdle of the stone. We immediately called him and arranged a time to come back the next day. He agreed to refund us minus $1000. He wanted a fee for his time of a $1000! Had he just been honest when I asked him about the "indented natural", we would have never bought it. We later realized we were shortchanged another $200 when refunded so, in the end, his dishonesty cost us $1200. read more

My Father went to Zoya & Joe in 1971 for my mother's first ring and has continued buying jewelry from MJ, even after we moved from NY 33 years ago. I have three sisters and all of their diamonds were purchased here. Thus my time finally came roughly 2 years ago. I spent countless hours researching everything about diamonds (much like you are probably doing now). I spoke with Joe countless times before making the drive 4 hours to NYC from D.C. He spent over 90 minutes talking me through everything you would want to know, confirming everything I read but educating me along the way. I purchased an engagement ring with a stunning multi-carat stone. He made money, I was happy and I still saved thousands from what Rare Carat or any other site was offering on a similar diamond. The wife Zoya gave honest advise on what she thought looked nice. She started out by showing me different certified diamonds that were in our budget. At times she could be a bit aggressive but in a cute way. We spent about 2 hours with the owners trying to construct the ring the way I wanted it. They asked us to give them a few hours to make the ring, and then to come back to see if I liked it. We then left. When we came back the ring was finished and ended up looking beautiful. I first walked into Matinee Jewelry a few years ago accidentally, as I was looking for a different jeweler! However, I was given an hour long tutorial about diamonds by Joseph, the owner. He gave me more information than I needed, but then followed it up with, 'you can go anywhere else, but you'll find the best deal here.'. I thanked him and then set off, kind of thinking that's the sort of thing you hear everywhere. About a year later, I started my search for an engagement ring and I went to no less than 30 different jewelers in the NYC area. I started with the big name stores, and went all the way to the flea market style jewelers on 47th street. After an exhaustive search, I returned to Matinee to see what they had after all this time. Joseph and his wife let me look at so many different stones, and offered many different ring settings that I could consider. It was a contrast to other jewelers that pressured rings already set with stones. I essentially created an original ring with the help of Joseph & his wife. Buying an engagement ring can be a stressful event, I mean, she's going to wear the thing forever. Joseph was great in that regard. He encouraged me to take my time and pick accordingly. When I saw the stone and setting that I wanted, there wasn't a lot of haggling necessary. I had been in many stores with many different price points and stone qualities, so I had an idea of what the cost was going to be. The thing is, Joseph was right in the sense that I couldn't find a better deal when I factored in the dedicated service I was given. I returned to Matinee after I was engaged, and my wife looked at wedding bands. She decided on a band that needed to be made specifically to match the ring. Joseph again was great in suggesting how the rings could match up. I picked my wedding ring out of a slew of options, and learned a bit about the pros & cons of engraving on a ring. I am sure i wrote a positive review for Matinee Jewelry once before but do not see it posted. Since I see that there are few bad reviews, i feel compelled to write another one. My husband is a very picky person when it comes to good customer service and trusting business owners. This is especially true when he was ready to put down $$$ when he was searching for my engagement ring 3-4 years ago. He told me about his experience and all about this jeweler after he proposed. I was skeptical until I met him for myself when i had to resize my engagement ring... and then again when we went back 2014 to look for my wedding band. Joseph, the owner, is a no non sense kind of guy but does it with such patience and kindness. His wife on the other hand is a bit pushy, but in an adorable way. One of the pave diamonds had come off the engagement ring after a few days of wearing it (very normal with pave diamonds i found out), however, to my relief Joseph took full responsibility after inspecting it to ensure it was not due to me banging the ring around and had it fixed immediately on the same day. In addition to that visit he resized and cleaned my ring. In 2013 I brought my sister who was looking to get a custom ring created and he was so kind to her and us by volunteering to help to check out the integrity of our engagement rings without charge. Her engagement ring was purchased elsewhere and he still helped her! He is a real jeweler that is passionate about the product and not about making a sale. We did not buy anything that day, but the experience influenced my sister to return and gave him the custom job. More recently in 2014 we went back to get a wedding band and although his prices are not cheap, I am certain they are fair for the value. I love, love my wedding band. After hearing what I wanted as my band and declining some of the initial suggestions he presented, he really came through and found the band that i am just in love with. He is an honest jeweler and when i told him i would recommend him to my friends, he said, "please make sure they check out all the jewelers and make me the last stop"- that is how confident he is on the quality of his jewelry, pricing and service. read more

Joe is great. After a bad experience at another jeweler, my fiancée and I came here for her engagement ring. Like everywhere on 47th, you have to bring your game face to Matinee. They are there to sell jewelry not shoot the breeze. Still, Joe was patient and kind, willing to work with us and considerate of our budget. I could have probably negotiated a little more on price but considering so many other jewelers have undesirable personalities, I'm comfortable rewarding a nice guy. Also, the fact that they're open on Sundays made it much easier for both of us. A lot of places on 47th are closed all weekend and only open M-F 10-5, so Matinee's (relatively) expanded hours make it a great choice for a working couple. read more

I traveled all the way from Virginia to buy a set of special rings. I went into a lot of stores looking at different rings and nothing quite caught my eye. There are a lot of aggressive sales people who try to get you to go in their store. This is one of few places open on Sunday too. But I also went on Monday to compare. I actually met Ricky outside, he is a funny guy and he got us to go inside and take a look, which was a great opportunity. We met Joseph, the owner, who is an awesome patient jeweler. He's not a salesman he's actually going to educate you on diamond rings and make sure your comfortable and happy. He made sure I stayed In what was comfortable for me in my price range. I actually wanted to buy more but he told me to wait and think about it and make a good decision. He gave me the best price with the best diamonds out of all the jewelry places up-and-down the diamond district he was the only one that made us comfortable and was so nice and taught us a lot about diamonds. He also has the best prices for the quality and still gave us a great deal without making the Jewelry seem cheapen. I was so happy with my ring that he designed for me. He made the best suggestion and designed my ring for me. I already had a great engagement ring so he took the stone off the top and put it onto a different setting for me and it looks awesome. No other jeweler even considered or offered that option. He had my ring redesigned and sized in about 30 mins. I was shocked at the great customer service. I even went back a few days later and bought two more bands and I also bought my husband's wedding band too. It was the best experience. Nice family environment. I would recommend him if you're going to go in the diamond district see him you'll get a better quality with pricing and feel great about your decision without feeling like you're being pressured. He doesn't bad mouth other jewelers either. Most of the jewelers bad mouth the other places instead of just speaking on their own credentials and guarantees. Also I noticed while I was there that people that came in would go look around and return back to the store because they could not find the same QUALITY and pricing that could beat Matinee. I am so pleased with my 3 1/2 carat ring and my husband loves his 1.10 carat ring! We've received so many compliments. I already referred my family to him. My fiance bought my engagement ring from Matinee jewelers and I could not be happier. We had just left another name brand store when we came across this tiny shop. A man outside invited us in and we followed--this is not something I would normally do, but I was so disappointed I decided to give it a chance. I am SO glad we did. The owner, Joseph was very knowledgeable and seemed delighted when he realized that we had done some research. I liked him immediately. I have purchased items from vendors on 47th street and visited many.. this is the FIRST time I did not feel like I was getting conned or ripped off in some way. Anyway, Joseph is very respectful of budget and will help select settings and stones to help you get the best value. He even let me sit in the back for a moment to search his database. When my fiance made the trip back down to purchase my ring, the stone and setting I liked the most were no longer available, but from what I was told Joseph spent a lot of time showing my man different settings that could be altered for my custom made yellow gold ring. He also helped my fiance choose a bigger stone with the same characteristics as the first that was no longer available. I am so pleased with my ring--one of my concerns was that there would be a gap between the stone and halo (frame in my cause because it is an emerald cut). The "designer" place we had visited just before meeting Joseph often advertises that their rings have no gap and are seamless, but their prices are SOOOO ridiculous. There is no gap in my ring and the metal has some weight to it (while still looking delicate) unlike in the other store. I am even happier that since my ring was custom made, no other customers have tried it on. It is all mine! :) My fiance's purchase came with a GIA certification and appropriate receipt/guarantee. Unlike many other stores on the street, the owners (Joe and Zoia) and not pushy, and they are very respectful of budget. We went there early in our diamond search, we were not ready to buy yet, and Joe even encouraged us to look online and if we see some stones we like, to bring the specifications over and he will show us what he has in that range of quality and price. We did that one week later, ended up with a beautiful stone and ring at better price than we would have gotten on Bluenile (with GIA certificate). We were very happy with our interactions with them, they seem to be nice honest people, not trying to push more expensive products or above budget. I went to clean it, all the diamonds on the setting were loose. Took it back to him, he said only one was loose. I took it to 2 different stores and both told me all diamonds were loose.
