I had such a great experience with Ana! I'm a natural brunette on the darker side (but not super dark), and my hair tends to pull a bit red--she did such an amazing job with my color. I recently moved to the area and I did not want to drive to Lakeview anymore to get my hair done, plus it was costing over $300 every time because they started doing highlights. I passed by this salon and looked up the reviews and their service menu. The reviews were great with ONE exception- I couldn't find any about curly hair. Well- here it is, Matisse! You're welcome! I used their website to send a message requesting someone who was well-versed with curly hair and what I really liked about the "contact us" was they ask for available times and you can attach pictures. Since I had a VERY specific look in mind, that worked well for me. I tried to stress how important it was to get a stylist who can work with curly hair to cut and color (my hair is POROUS). I got a call back the next day, less than 12 hours later. They were so nice on the phone. I booked my appointment with Shanna. I received an email confirmation with their strict cancellation policy (which is fine with me!) and put my card on file. If you're not comfortable with these I say find somewhere else! It's a great small business, neighborhood salon that we should all be supporting more off. Anyway- The appt was for a Friday morning, and I was t expecting it to be crowded but it was buzzing! It's a beautiful salon, lots of natural elements, great colors, and comfortable window seats. The only issue I have is with the fluorescent lighting- but they use a lot of color, plants and decor to mute it. I was checked in and given a very lovely iced tea (maybe they serve wine *after* 11am?!) and sat waiting for my appt. The staff was very friendly to the guests and each other. It looks as if they employ a lot of young people to help with shampoos and cleaning up, which I thought was nice. If you've worked/been to as many salons as I have- you don't want a stressed/overworked stylist! So kudos for that. I met Shanna and we decided we were best friends. I didn't plan on being "that customer," I wanted to quietly read my book and mind my business, but pretty soon we knew each others life stories. Here's my review on Shanna: - very, very skilled at hair cut and color - extremely warm & inviting person - she is hilarious - she has a great vibe! Very outgoing and kind - explained exactly what she was going to do and listened to my every request, and stopped me when I asked for something that wouldn't work Highly recommend for curly hair! The young person who shampooed my hair was Maribel (I think! Sorry!) and she did a wonderful job with a great head massage and conversation. My hair was dry, sad, and the color was all wrong. Shanna created a color that worked with my existing color that I didn't like- and you can see from the photos that she NAILED it. She explained how they do a root touch up at a VERY reasonable rate, so I will be booking that soon. The products are Aveda. If you are interested in the products, you have to go with exactly what they recommend! Aveda is a brand that has been around a long time, and they have really specific formulas. So even if you "like the smell" of something better than what they recommend, it probably wont work with your hair. Trust me! I bought a few products and the check out process was easy! Also the pricing was very reasonable. They recently went to cash tips only- but that's fine with me! Come prepared! Everyone was so nice, and I loved the vibe. I've had some bad luck with getting my hair done for a few years now. I was looking for somewhere new and close to us, as we've recently moved. Checked here on Yelp and found Matisse. Took my daughter in first for a much overdue cut and she was extremely happy. I asked the receptionist while I was waiting if they had anyone that was good with short hair and they pointed out Lisa, who happened to be cutting my daughter's hair. I brought my daughter in this past week in June for a hair style/cut. She picked out her own picture of what she wanted. Shana, was my stylist on my prior visit and with my daughter on this visit. Shana was very informative about that particular style, how to round brush my daughter's hair so that my daughter would get the look in the picture, cut and styled her hair beautifully. She even helped with helpful tips dealing with chlorine in the pool and my daughter's hair. It was helpful. I also had my eyebrows waxed there the month before, May 2022. They look great and it was a wonderful experience at their salon. The room that esthetics is done in is clean, inviting and very relaxing. My esthetician was wonderful, pleasant personality and she was precise and spot on with what I wanted with my eyebrows. I will be back for all esthetician work at Matisse. read more

My hair was in desperate search of a much needed pick me up after not having maintained my desired ashy blonde for about 5 months. Inches of outgrowth at the root, and more brassy/gold tones than a little purple shampoo could help. Briana and Jocelyn brought me back to life. I'm terrible at explaining what I want because truthfully I can never make up my mind, but Briana took my indecisiveness and ran with it. She gave me a great maintainable ashy blonde. I know trims aren't exactly fun for any stylist, but Jocelyn made sure to honor my request for a subtle trim to take off the dead ends - only about a half an inch or so. She also styled me with an easy curl which I loved since I never style my hair. Briana also walked me through some products to help my hair recover from the torture that is going blonde and keep it healthy and happy. I'm obsessed! I was excited to bring my mom here and glad it was close to home. I was really hoping it would be my go to place but, unfortunately it will not be. My mom got a cut and color and it wasn't what we expected it to be. The color was more on the orange red which is not what she wanted. Latino hair requires more toner and bleach to be left longer in order to penetrate the color and that didn't happen. I don't think they have enough experience on coloring Latino hair. read more

I saw Shannon, for the first time, for my wedding hairdo! Maybe a little risky but I've never been happier. The salon is very nice and welcoming, with water and coffee as well as a few snacks available for their customers. You are greeted by a friendly face and a warm smile, they take your coat and make sure you are comfortable until you wait to be seen. The wait was only a minute and Shannon helped me right away. The appointment was LONG as my hair is down to my lower back/belly button but I was comfortable the whole time. My hair looks so beautiful and I feel wedding ready now. I had brassy blonde hair that was about 6 months overdue for a touch up. I was skeptical as to how light it could be made but it came out perfect and even better than I had imagined. Wonderful, Fantastic, locally-owned Aveda salon in the heart of the Gladstone Park neighborhood. They use high-quality Aveda products. The whole team at Matisse were friendly and professional. The vibe in the salon is upbeat and bright. I love that they have neck-supported hair washing stations, and they use warm towels to give you a relaxing neck rub after getting your hair washed.
