In a stripe mall, we walked in on their dinner time, a waiter promptly seated us and gave us the menu. Pretty good selection, however the food was disappointing. The only reason I am giving three stars was because the staff was friendly and the presentation was impressive. However the sushi lacked flavor and texture. Thanks to yelp I tried this out of the way Japanese place located in a nondescript strip mall and had a great meal. Ambiance was classic with a small but adequate bar area for the up close prep experience. I went with my go to choice of a sushi-sashimi platter when I get a sense the place is the real deal, and Matsu did not disappoint! After a chef surprise, which was a delicious ball of avocado and seafood, followed by the standard miso soup and salad .... Out came one of the nicest looking platters I've ever seen. It is very detail oriented, full of pictures of items on the menu, and the top of the menu pages are labeled to guide you along the way. Lastly, it's a hard cover menu. Frankly, the menu is better than some high end restaurants in downtown cities. ORDER: * Fancy Tuna * This appetizer reminded me of poke. It was diced ice-cut tuna and avocado dressed with delicious sesame soy sauce. It has bits of spinach salad. * Iburi Sake( Smoked Salmon * Two delicious sushi smoked salmon pieces. The salmon was perfect. * Sake (Salmon) * Sticking with the salmon, another two tasty salmon sushi. * Shrimp Tempura Roll * Freshly fried shrimp tempura with avocado in rice and seaweed. This place has one heck of an atmosphere! Walls are decorated to make the place look as Japanese as possible. TV was on, playing a Japanese TV network. The restaurant had a visible food preparation area where the sushi chefs enthusiastically did their work. Restaurant did not pinch pennies on the waiters' and chefs' uniforms. The restaurant is on the corner of a row of several adjacent buildings and I liked their use of their window space. Once you open the door, the entrance is well-decorated, too. The podium the host stands behind is oddly situated, but they are making their best use of a small space, so no points taken off. The restroom was clean. I ordered escolar, toro, orata, and chicken katsu. All more than acceptable quality. I did not like the katsu sauce, but I think that's just a personal preference matter. They threw in some extra food- tuna in a circular configuration with some other elements I couldn't figure out- which I guess worked, since I'm here, writing this five-star review! I'm a creature of habit and very much enjoy the sushi rolls they have. Everything is fresh and it's always fun to watch the sushi chefs making the rolls. They are excellent at plating and always give you something new and beautiful. For lunches, I enjoy the bento box. We went to Matsu last night to celebrate a promotion. No one greeted us when we arrived but we picked the booth table we wanted. The restaurant is very clean and the staff was friendly. We splurged and got the roll with lobster and it was incredible. Truly worth the $20! Everything else was pretty solid. The volcano and the sweet potato roll were a little heavy on the eel sauce but still tasty. We've been here many times before and we will be here again I'm sure. OMG SO GOOD. I wish this spot was closer to home. I travel for work, and there's a bunch of hotels near the airport which are close here. It's a cute little spot in a shopping mall, and super easy to find. I was feeling like Japanese food so decided to give it a try, I'm so glad I did! I called for a takeout order, and the person taking my order was SO sweet on the phone. By the time I made it to the restaurant, they had it perfectly prepared, it was so quick. Their restaurant is adorable inside, and feels very authentic. I would love to eat there once the pandemic dies down, I felt very welcome and had lots of good vibes walking in. I ended up getting a bunch of stuff because I'm a glutton for Japanese - veggie tempura, vegetable gyoza, and the teriyaki chicken. My only complaint was not enough teriyaki sauce because it was so good!! Everything was so delicious, I debated packing it up and taking home my leftovers on the plane! The tempura was super crispy and delicious, the gyoza were so unique with a veggie dumpling wrap, the salad dressing was very very delicious, maybe ginger and mint?, and the chicken didn't have a fatty piece on site. I got the shrimp and vegetable tempura, also delicious. Then we enjoyed a Holiday Roll and a Love Roll which contain shrimp and crab. These were perfect for us as we don't eat anything raw, although we did see a lot of beautiful sushi being served to others. The presentation was so good that I had to take a picture. The rolls were delicious with just the right amount of spice. And, if you have any room left, try the desserts. The green tea ice cream sundae is great! I enjoyed a terrific rice lager from Japan. We've been coming to Matsu for well over a decade now. They've consistently had pretty good sushi, with a number of standout special rolls. My all-time favorite is the Seattle Roll. My wife loves the Green Dragon, which is no longer on the menu, but they'll still make if you ask for it. The bento boxes are pretty good for both lunch & dinner, but don't have any spectacular items overall. They're good and filling, otherwise. Our kids like the katsu and teriyaki dishes. Service is occasionally inconsistent, sometimes due to newer employees, and sometimes due to the language barrier. But we've never had any downright bad experiences at Matsu. We hadn't been back for ~6 months or so, but I noticed that neither of the previous owners was there the past couple of times we've been, and the atmosphere seemed a bit different. I suspect that there are new owners now, but the sushi is still good. For those complaining about the soups - Matsu is, first & foremost, a sushi restaurant. The soups are definitely not their specialty, so don't expect them to be exceptional. But they at least thought enough to provide some additional menu choices for those who can't, or don't want to, eat sushi. If you want better soup, go to a ramen or phở restaurant. read more

What a treat this place is! After landing at Baltimore (BWI) my nephew Christopher asked if I was hungry. Surely I was after being cramped in the middle seat from Cali to Maryland. I requested a sushi place, and my nephew took me to his go-to sushi spot, Matsu Japanese Restaurant. I am soooooo glad he took me there. The service was on point, the food was kick-in-yo-mouth delicious and the rolls that I ordered were so yummy, I couldn't help but write that on the receipt, YUMMY!!! Megan, our server, was efficient, accommodating and attentive. I ordered the Maryland Roll (YUM-YUM) and the Love Roll (SUPER YUM) nephew ordered the fried chicken katsu -our meal was filling, with generous portions of sushi, it was delicious and the service was wonderful. What a refreshingly, delightful, and palate-pleasing restaurant!!! 10-stars from me and my nephew! To anyone who is in the Linthicum area, go there and you won't be disappointed. Tempura Udon with a kick? Who would have thought? Matsu is a great place to grab a quick lunch. Some coworkers and I stopped by recently to try one of the sushi lunch specials. I can't speak to the sushi, but the Tempura Udon was fantastic. The noodles were as expected, but the broth is where the dish excelled. It's rare to find broth with enough spice out of the gate. For those who like hot sake, the price for a small bottle was only $3.50. You can't go wrong with Matsu for A recent update: I went and tried the maki combo. 3 rolls for $10 is an unbeatable price. I was surprised by the generous portions of filler-to-rice. The sushi and the price puts Matsu over the top. This is an excellent place for lunch. read more

I grew up in Linthicum. When I was a kid, the location of this restaurant was a crappy little drug store. The shopping center has been revamped a few times and the most recent revamp saw the addition of this Japanese restaurant. I love Japanese food, and especially sushi, so not long after it opened, I visited. It was terrible. Fast forward a few years and I found myself alone at home with the family out of town. I decided to give Matsu another try. I'm glad I did. My review is only 3 stars, and for good reason. The food and the service were both very good. That said, it is still unremarkable. I will definitely be coming back. In fact, I might be coming quite frequently, but that's only because it is the closest place to get sushi. If I have the desire to travel a little longer, there are better options a bit further away. read more
