Hot and sour soup - do not recommend...
    Mitasha P.

I decided to try American Asian for takeout after seeing several mixed reviews about the place. What I like about this place is that they had a Dinner Special menu, while most place solely have a Lunch Special. From the Dinner Special menu, I ordered the Kung Pao and Szechuan Style Roast Pork (both $10.95). Each item comes with a choice of egg roll (pork, shrimp, or veg) and a side order. All this for $10.95 is a good deal. I got the Veg and Pork egg roll and for the sides, I got the hot and sour soup and another spring roll. The spring rolls were decent. They were a bit of the greasy end, but tolerable. The hot and sour soup, however, was terrible. There was nothing sour about it and it was incredibly thick. Above all, it was bland and absolutely no flavor. I highly suggest you choose a different side with your order. The Kung Pao beef was good. It had the usual peanuts and peppers, but also zucchini which I thought was an interesting addition. The Szechuan style roast pork was also enjoyable. It had a slight kick and lots of shredded carrots. I also got the Crispy Beef since I saw it was one of their popular dishes on Yelp. I have to say though, it was too sweet for me and not very crispy at all. One thing I do wish, is they would provide more rice. The meat to rice ratio is like 3:1. It's not a dealbreaker for me since I could always make more rice at home, but if I were to dine in, I would hate to have to pay extra for more rice. In the takeout bag, they also gave me two free almond cookies :) All in all, I would definitely order take out from here again considering the prices and that the food was actually pretty decent. It didn't take too long, maybe 20 minutes, for the food to be ready. I decided to try American Asian for takeout after seeing several mixed reviews about the place. Best Chinese Food Arbutus.. that is what everyone said so my husband and I tried it out and got hooked! I am a big fan of the steamed dumplings. I like to cut them in half and soak in the hoisin sauce before eating. I like the General Tso chicken, Hunan Chicken, and Sesame Chicken. I am a enjoy eating chicken! My husband usually gets the Shrimp fried rice and crab rangoon. Both delicious! They use large size shrimp and not those weird tiny shrimp. They also serve Sushi and Thai food. I ordered the Drunk Noodles one night but thought they were a little bland. Drunk noodles are usually pretty spicy so that was disappointing. Occasionally I have ordered an eel roll or something else cooked but I generally order from Sushi-Q if I want Sushi. The Sushi here is OK if you don't want to drive to Elkridge but we tend to stick to the Chinese Food. COVID PRECAUTIONS ABOUND! This is the most cautious restaurant I have seen/ They stopped doing delivery and closed down the dining room at the start of the pandemic so they are now CARRY OUT ONLY. They built a vestibule by the door with thick plexiglass like you see at a gas station in the cirty. They put the food in a bag through a little door. I applaud their efforts to remain open and stay safe during the pandemic.

    Shrimp fried rice

Since moving to Catonsville a few years ago, we have not had a lot of luck with finding the perfect Chinese restaurant. One of our favorite dishes is shrimp fried rice and for some reason we have only found one place in Marriottsville that makes it the way we like it. Tonight, I think we found a new place to get food from a little closer to our home. We got an order of gyoza, crispy beef and shrimp fried rice. All dishes were very good and service could be done all online. My husband went to pick it up and everything was ready to go. Very nice staff and everything had a good flavor. We will be trying some more of their dishes soon!

    Krab Rangoon

We decided that we wanted to get Chinese to support. I did some research but there are not a ton of options in this area. All the other reviews said that it's very hit or miss and the consistency isn't great. We ordered some app favorites in Rangoon & egg roll. The Rangoon was heavy on the cheese and it didn't come with a dipping sauce. The egg roll had ok flavor but was a bit greasy. We also ordered steam pork dumplings. The meat inside was really well seasoned but the dough part was way too thick - it was like a Russian dumpling thickness. Then we split it down the middle and got one Chinese entree, General Tsaos, and one Thai entree of Pad Thai. The general was super bland and not very flavorful - the pad Thai was better but still pretty meh. When I was talking to my partner about how we would rate our meal, she was like I don't know a 3? And I that what I started thinking but then I was like, but also we would never choose to order from here again. It's just not worth the $62 we spent. So that's why it's 2/5. Everything was edible and fine, but that's pretty much it. Oh also we used DoorDash and it was lovely and they came pretty quickly.

New to the neighborhood and tried this place, so glad I did. The egg rolls are light and not laden with oil. Rice is fluffy and fresh. Had the Thai basil with meat. It was well seasoned and spicy. Sushi is made fresh. Staff are friendly and quick. Restaurant wasn't crowded.

Shoyou seemed to have good reviews so we walked in without reservations. Looking at the menu we thought oh the three of us can easily demolish 2 regular maki rolls and maybe 3 special rolls. Nope. We had so much leftovers! And everything tasted so good! Its aptly priced. If you are getting a special roll it will be at least 4 to 8 pieces depending on what you get. My favorite of the special rolls was actually the spider roll which was made with softshell crab(and not pictured as it was promptly devoured) Would recommend if you're in the Baltimore area and want to support a local restaurant in a nice neighborhood. I also noticed they did the same for other tables, which really shows how much they care about the experience. I ordered four pieces in order from left to right: the maguro, albacore, sea bream, and toro. The maguro truly melted in my mouth. The albacore was delicious with a surprisingly generous portion. The sea bream was probably my least favorite of the lineup but still very good. The toro was easily my personal favorite, and I could have eaten 100 of those. Each order comes with two pieces which made trying different options even better. I also got the baked mussels and wowowowow they were so good. I genuinely wanted to order another round but I was already full. This is the closest spot I have found to an omakase style experience without actually doing a full omakase. It has more flavor, great presentation, and a little extra dazzle instead of just plain fish on rice. The only downside was that parking was a bit tough, but it was absolutely worth it for the quality of the meal. Highly recommend!

Solid meal, friendly service, with a few nitpicks. details: We went on a pretty quiet Monday afternoon to grab a sushi (and more) dinner. There were hardly any people for context. There's a bar (by the sushi making station), tables, and booths to sit. Plenty of seating. The ambiance is kind of modern with familiar touches of an Asian/Japanese dining experience. There's TVs everywhere, which I assume would be playing sports/news (but there weren't any games happening at that time). That's where my nitpick actually is. I don't think they monitor this very closely and so there were a few explicit songs and videos playing at the time we were there. It wasn't anything hardcore or anything, but something to be cognizant about if you're going with little ones. The food was solid. Things did take a little longer than what I expected considering how quiet the place was when we were there. However, things did taste fresh and made to order, so I'm guessing/assuming the time went to make things fresh which is definitely nice. All the food we ordered was well balanced with flavor and cooked well. The sushi menu felt a bit more on the Americanized side for me. e.g. there's lots of rolls with cream cheese and mayo type of sauces. But, what we did order was very tasty. Positive experience all around and I would recommend checking out if you're in the area and in the mood for some Japanese cuisine.

The space is basic, but the food is what keeps people coming back. The portions are big without feeling sloppy. The chicken katsu is solid: crispy on the outside, still juicy inside, and not drowned in sauce. The BBQ plates are dependable -- sweet, smoky, and cooked well -- especially if you like a mix of meats. Nothing feels overdone, and that's kind of the point. The mac salad deserves a mention because it actually tastes like mac salad, not some watered-down side. Creamy, simple, and it pairs well with everything else on the plate. Rice is cooked right, which shouldn't be a big deal, but it is. It's not trying to be trendy or upscale Hawaiian food. It's just straightforward comfort food that fills you up and tastes good. If you're looking for a reliable spot when you want something hearty and familiar, Halo Hawaiian gets the job done.

If there was a 3.5 star option, I feel like that would be the most accurate representation here. The place itself is located on the wall of the Lotte in Catonsville and it looks like a small family-run establishment. Service was kind, but admittedly a bit of a language barrier which may have affected some of the ordering process. In total, we ordered the tea leaf salad, a curry dish, seafood noodles, and the asian doughnuts. While I was hoping for fresh, vibrant dishes, my expectations fell a bit short where some of the proteins felt a bit tough and other ingredients felt a bit soggy. The flavor profile was good (one of those places where spicy means spicy), but it did lean a bit on the seafoody/fishy side. I still think it warrants checking out because it's not often that there's Burmese cuisine available.
