American Asian used to serve great food before the pandemic. The quality of the food has very much declined however. We got two entrees here last week and they were the quality of all you can eat chinese buffet food, not restaurant food where you purchase a specific entree. The sauces were coarse and lumpy, not refined and glossy like you would expect. You could tell that the sauces were frozen or reheated too many times. And the sauce is what makes the whole dish. The inside of the place is a mess. It used to be sit down dining and now it is just take out. They have hodge podge furniture here and there and tables blocking the space. I understand if they want to convert from sit down dining to carry out only but gosh we are years past the pandemic now so make yourself look presentable. The people working here are very friendly. There is lots of parking. I don't think they let you use the bathroom since it is now takeout only. I have no plans to come back here again, we have so many other asian and chinese restaurants in the area that are better. The food here used to be great quality and the dining room used to be so neat and clean, so it is kind of sad to see what this place has become. read more

Our favorite pan-Asian place closed down a few month ago and we've been looking for a good replacement. Thanks to Yelp, we found American Asian and I think we found a new favorite! They offer a mix of Chinese, Japanese, and Thai dishes. Overall, the food is fantastic. The Orange Chicken was delightful. It was a little more savory than other places with pieces of scallion, orange peel, and sesame seeds dotted throughout and without that artificial orange color. The Chicken Satay came with fat pieces of chicken that was well seasoned, a big hit with the kids! The veggie tempura appetizer was delicious - crispy and a nice variety of veg. All the sushi was great - we got the spicy tuna, crunchy spicy tuna, Boston roll, and the vegetable maki special roll. I would get all of them again. The following weren't bad, but just okay: Egg roll - basic, nothing to write home about. Ditto for Pad Thai (needed more lime). The Tom Yum Soup was just strange. Not bad, but not that hot, sour, limey and fish saucy broth that I get at most Thai-specific joints. In times of Corona, they are keeping things SUPER safe. You walk into what is basically a booth and they exchange payment through a little slot and there is a box with a little door where they put your food to pick up. Zero contact between client and owner. There is also plenty of hand sanitizer for customers. They allow dining in, but only one table at a time. I felt safe. What I like about this place is that they had a Dinner Special menu, while most place solely have a Lunch Special. From the Dinner Special menu, I ordered the Kung Pao and Szechuan Style Roast Pork (both $10.95). Each item comes with a choice of egg roll (pork, shrimp, or veg) and a side order. All this for $10.95 is a good deal. I got the Veg and Pork egg roll and for the sides, I got the hot and sour soup and another spring roll. The spring rolls were decent. They were a bit of the greasy end, but tolerable. The hot and sour soup, however, was terrible. There was nothing sour about it and it was incredibly thick. Above all, it was bland and absolutely no flavor. I highly suggest you choose a different side with your order. The Kung Pao beef was good. It had the usual peanuts and peppers, but also zucchini which I thought was an interesting addition. The Szechuan style roast pork was also enjoyable. It had a slight kick and lots of shredded carrots. I also got the Crispy Beef since I saw it was one of their popular dishes on Yelp. I have to say though, it was too sweet for me and not very crispy at all. One thing I do wish, is they would provide more rice. The meat to rice ratio is like 3:1. It's not a dealbreaker for me since I could always make more rice at home, but if I were to dine in, I would hate to have to pay extra for more rice. Since moving to Catonsville a few years ago, we have not had a lot of luck with finding the perfect Chinese restaurant. One of our favorite dishes is shrimp fried rice and for some reason we have only found one place in Marriottsville that makes it the way we like it. Tonight, I think we found a new place to get food from a little closer to our home. We got an order of gyoza, crispy beef and shrimp fried rice. All dishes were very good and service could be done all online. My husband went to pick it up and everything was ready to go. Very nice staff and everything had a good flavor. Best Chinese Food Arbutus.. that is what everyone said so my husband and I tried it out and got hooked! I am a big fan of the steamed dumplings. I like to cut them in half and soak in the hoisin sauce before eating. I like the General Tso chicken, Hunan Chicken, and Sesame Chicken. I am a enjoy eating chicken! My husband usually gets the Shrimp fried rice and crab rangoon. Both delicious! They use large size shrimp and not those weird tiny shrimp. They also serve Sushi and Thai food. I ordered the Drunk Noodles one night but thought they were a little bland. Drunk noodles are usually pretty spicy so that was disappointing. Occasionally I have ordered an eel roll or something else cooked but I generally order from Sushi-Q if I want Sushi. The Sushi here is OK if you don't want to drive to Elkridge but we tend to stick to the Chinese Food. COVID PRECAUTIONS ABOUND! This is the most cautious restaurant I have seen/ They stopped doing delivery and closed down the dining room at the start of the pandemic so they are now CARRY OUT ONLY. They built a vestibule by the door with thick plexiglass like you see at a gas station in the cirty. They put the food in a bag through a little door. We decided that we wanted to get Chinese to support. I did some research but there are not a ton of options in this area. All the other reviews said that it's very hit or miss and the consistency isn't great. We ordered some app favorites in Rangoon & egg roll. The Rangoon was heavy on the cheese and it didn't come with a dipping sauce. The egg roll had ok flavor but was a bit greasy. We also ordered steam pork dumplings. The meat inside was really well seasoned but the dough part was way too thick - it was like a Russian dumpling thickness. Then we split it down the middle and got one Chinese entree, General Tsaos, and one Thai entree of Pad Thai. The general was super bland and not very flavorful - the pad Thai was better but still pretty meh. When I was talking to my partner about how we would rate our meal, she was like I don't know a 3? And I that what I started thinking but then I was like, but also we would never choose to order from here again. It's just not worth the $62 we spent. So that's why it's 2/5. Yeah, this place is pretty good. It's family owned and they're genuine. Even though there's a slight language barrier with some of the workers there, they understood what I ordered. Got their soup and wanted an appetizer, dumplings to be precise, so I got the Gyoza. As I ordered my food, I saw a pile of magazines to the side so I got a Travel, Vacation kinda magazine and sat down. As I was about to finish skimming through the magazine, I got my food. I realized that I was supposed to tell em I wanted to eat in before ordering but since I didn't, they had all my food to go. I asked them if I could stay and eat and they said sure. Sweet. So I tried out the Gyoza first and while that was alright, the Tom Ka Soup was delicious. A little rich in flavor and it was hot. I then had some of the Crispy Chicken and that was delicious. Before I found American Asian, I bounced around trying to find a Chinese food that was just as good as the original Double Dragon on SW Blvd. Here at AA, I found what I was looking for. The food is fantastic, you never wait long and everyone is very friendly! The only thing I don't like is the food can be very oily sometimes and depending on what you get. Props to Caitlin C for her review that talked me into going to an entirely new section of Maryland I'd never been to. While it might not be my favorite Chinese food place ... it doesn't have the greatest competition to go up against in the area, so it is up there for cheap take out in driving distance. And it is cheap, but still up there in quality. Pineapple Fried Rice: Pretty good but maybe on the bland side. I ended up using the left overs to mix with some home made stir fry the next day, and I realized it may have been better after sitting the night. Still - we did go veggie on this, so if you got chicken or shrimp it might take on those flavors and be better. I'd get it again. Shrimp Pad Thai - okay, this is why I'm coming back. The shrimps were juicy and large. It was flavored (though not spicy) and still managed to have a nice crunch to the peanuts. Really well done! We had some as left overs the next day, and it was still great. Dumpling Soup - I hadn't been feeling well the previous few days, so this was a comfort thing and it hit the spot. Very generous with the dumplings. Spring Rolls - kind of small, but at 1.50 you get what you pay for. They were good, but I might explore other appetizers. As far as the place, if you are eating in, it is very clean, but lacks a bit on atmosphere. Came in at about 9 on a Saturday night. They seemed to be having some sort of family event and the staff was too busy watching the kids running around to be bothered to check on me. I was asked to place my order as I was ordering my drink. Ordered 'drunken noodles' which was literally just flat rice noodles in soy sauce, and was way too salty to finish. The waitress also brought my check about 20 minutes in, which I guess was a pretty clear signal that it was time to leave. Amid the running, screaming children, the over salted 'thai' dish, and the garbage service, I can't see anyone giving this place 3+ stars. This was also one of three times in my life that I haven't left a tip. Also, if you're having a family event at 9pm, why not just wait until close so you can have privacy and not have to rush customers out of the store? read more

This place is as good as it gets in the area for Americanized Asian. The place is aptly named, and shouldn't be ashamed of it. Out of the dozens of Americanized Asian places I've ever been to, American Asian is probably the best one of them all. A small-seeming restaurant with without all the pink drapery and very mellow nonclassical piano music in the background with good service to boot, American Asian breaks the mold of traditional Americanized Asian joints and raises the bar. They have not only Chinese, but also Japanese and Thai options. They even have sushi, the only option that I haven't tried. As far as the Chinese, Japanese, and Thai options go, they are good, but also cheap, and very generous in portion. This place probably has the cheapest Thai food ever, and I believe it is capable of satisfying almost any quick Thai craving. The Thai Basil is excellent, as is the Thai Pineapple Fried Rice; the latter option is always ordered when I go. Also, the little fried donuts you get at the end are an awesome bonus. I got tipped off to this place by a co-worker, and took the girlfriend to try it out last night. The pan-Asian menu was pretty comprehensive with all the standard Japanese, Thai & Chinese dishes present. We decided to try the shrimp toast, and a combo platter each of General Tso's chicken & Fried Rice w/ Won-ton Soup and Chicken Drunken Noodles w/ Miso. The shrimp toast was pretty good, and spot on for what was expected. The soups were also both good (and it had been a while since I'd had a decent bowl of Miso, myself). Girlfriend was pleased that the chicken was all white-meat, and the General Tso's was quite good. The drunken noodles were the perfect amount of spicy for me (good kick but not so much that it overtakes the rest of the dish) and had equal parts chicken, noodles, and veggies instead of a giant bowl of noodles and a bit of the rest like I've had elsewhere. There was enough to where I even had leftovers (which is a-typical for me). We were quite pleased with the meal, and even with a couple sodas it was still under $25 for the both of us, when we got our fortune cookies and two complimentary donuts with a dollop of whipped cream. I would first like to mention - my true rating is 4.5 stars but since there isn't that option I rounded it up to a 5. Interior - very simple with a cash register and small sushi bar/open window to see the sole sushi chef make sushi. There are tables spread out through the small restaurant with mustard and sweet and sour sauce on every table. On the sides of the restaurant there are 3-5 booths against the walls. Various asian trinkets are hung on the walls, as well as paper Chinese New Year's decorations. String lights light up the front of the restaurant. Bathroom is clean, but definitely not fancy. Food- when you arrive a bowl of crunchy crackers are put on the table (that you can eat with mustard or sweet and sour sauce. I got the 9.95 dinner combination meal where I could choose a dish, and it comes with my choice of soup (hot and soup, miso, or egg drop), a fried pork roll, white or fried rice, and a dish! An amazing deal! I definitely recommend the Penang curry with fried tofu (tofu wasn't an option but upon asking, it was allowed with the deal). The service was overall pretty great and I enjoyed my time there. It was a very cute restaurant to have dinner at with friends. Cons: the chicken. Although I didn't order it, all of my friends that had ordered chicken with their choice of curry or dish said that their chicken wasn't pleasant to eat, so they didn't end up eating it. Gotta give American Asian their props. They've pared down the menu. Basic, cheap and cheerful Chinese-American and Thai-American standards are the rule of the day. Very reasonable prices and hearty portions are standard. And to be fair, the preparation and ingredients are pretty solid, too. My drunken noodles came loaded with plenty of sliced roast pork and perfectly cooked veg. Cashew chicken and veggie egg rolls were pretty much exactly what you'd expect - no surprises. Brown rice is an option with any entree. The hot and sour soup is both acceptably hot and sour. The wonton soup tastes like scallion, ginger and broth more than MSG and water like some other places. Nice. There's a page of Japanese-style dishes, including sushi rolls and udon. If you want it. I don't know if many orders come from that part of the menu, honestly. Pretty much everything we saw come out to tables was on the Chinese/Thai side of things. When there's a lot of carry-out orders coming in, service can be a bit slow. But once your order is in, food comes quick and hot. The tea's better, too. The only thing I miss are the little beignets you used to get. The Vietnamese influence has been dropped from the menu. Not that it seems to have hurt them. Highly recommended for nearby UMBC students - tasty stuff, fairly cheap, and leftovers for the dorm fridge and late-night snacking.
