We always stop in at Matsuchan whenever we are in the metro-Detroit area. The restaurant is cafe-style, so very casual with a homey feel. Service is very attentive and quick. We've had a variety of their noodle dishes, including the miso pork ramen (good), spicy miso ramen (good, though the spiciness does obscure the miso flavor a bit), the vegetable noodle soup (also good). We've also tried the curry ramen, which is good in small portions but too overwhelming all at once. Overall, good for homestyle ramen but not particularly mind-blowing. They also have meals for a little extra that include rice balls. The appetizers are just okay - good as fillers but are not homemade (likely warmed up/microwaved.) Overall, we like to stop here for a quick bite to eat, typically with no wait. With every bowl of ramen that is served out of the kitchen you are getting a taste of real Japanese cuisine. To be honest, I ordered the vegetable ramen made with vegetable broth to obtain a vegan option here. While I did this, I am not sure I received what I was looking for. After a couple bites something did not taste right and after asking the server why that was it was because the only broth that was used there was Pork Broth. I've been going here for years now -- while I no longer live in Michigan, every single time I'm up here a visit to Matsuchan is obligatory. It is always tasty, always faithful, always as you remember it, always there for you. Over the years I've had just about every single item on the menu. The curry ramen is my favorite (and has always been); no matter what you are having, the portions are immense. The broths are on the simpler side, with a clean flavor that kids and foodies alike can enjoy. The gyoza are very homestyle, and quickly devoured. The waitstaff are friendly and treat you like family after you've become a regular. And as for the chef, well, he never seems to age. Time is a curious thing. When I first had Matsuchan I was a young undergraduate at the University of Michigan, almost two decades ago. I can still remember what it felt like, pulling up to this little place, not knowing what I was in for. I can still remember that first slurp of noodle, that first sip of broth. Whenever I come here, I close my eyes and there I am, a young man in 1999, full of dreams and hopes as-yet unrealized. Then I open my eyes and time just fast-forwards until there I am again, my older self once more in 2018. The smile on my face when that bowl of piping hot ramen arrives, though -- the same both in memory and in the present day. And this I want people to know: no matter how sophisticated ramen culture in southeast Michigan becomes, no matter where our footsteps take us, no matter how much an uncaring world might batter at us, Matsuchan is and will always be a special place. Canton is home to many good Japanese restaurants, and Matsuchan is pretty high up there on the list. I walked in during lunch hours and was seated immediately, and service was fast. I ordered the SP1 Duck Ramen, and I loved it. Noodles were a great consistency and the broth was great. The service was also good, my server always made sure I had a full cup of tea and made sure I didn't need anything. I cannot believe I have not reviewed this yet... I really like it here a lot! It is unlike anything around. This is not your college ramen, no worries there. The atmosphere is definitely hole in the wall (license plates as decor) and casual but the food is happy and delicious. The people are so friendly and patient, you always feel welcomed. Definitely a family feel. Be warned the hours here are odd, if you are making a drive I would call ahead. Menus are on the wall and tables but they also have a great one with pictures to help you out if you are clueless, if you look at all dazed the sweet waitress will bring one over. Another warning for newbies is that they give you a big spoon for the soup and chopsticks are on the table. My husband is not skilled at all with chopsticks so it intimidated him at first but he gladly learned for the food, it is so delicious you will be motivated enough to figure it out too. My fave dish here is the pork soup ramen, slightly creamy and just happily huge, I always take half home. Reading through here though I see I am not alone in that love. The broths here have real depth of flavor and are delicious. The soups generally contain pieces of delicious pork and fishcake, mushrooms, bean sprouts, seaweed and green onion as well as a goodly amount of noodles. I also like the the seafood ramen here, the gyoza and shrimp dumplings and the fried rice (less soy laden than most). In the summer I liked the cold ramen salad with the sesame dressing but they also feature cold soba noodles. My husband likes to get the combo deal they offer here. He likes the Shio (clear broth) ramen with the fried rice and three shrimp dumplings. It is a smaller bowl of soup than a regular order but still huge really. With the rice and dumplings it makes quite a filling meal. They have noodle dishes, rice bowls (including one with eel, yum!) and katsu as well as specials. Oddly one night it was meatloaf ??? I cannot seem to resist the soups long enough to explore much though. If for some reason you feel the need they have various items on the table for doctoring up your soup or food. Pepper, chili oil, soy and some odd looking orange powdered spice. I will admit to using the chili oil as I like zip. They also have a nice sauce for the gyoza. Happily too they have a hugely handy stack of napkins in a holder. Generally if a dish sounds like something you would like, here at Matsuchan, you will. Steve D is correct that you can definitely have better Ramen in Japan and Socal, but it'll be one expensive meal since you'll have to buy a ticket. Now I'm not a big fan of the spicey soup here (flavor doesn't have much punch) but some of their other noodles are nice and hearty. This is a true mom and pop shop with only 4 people working in the place. The husband work the ramen, one person wash the dishes, the wife and one other person take care of the front. My favorite at this place is the Shio ramen, savory broth (definitely chicken, but there are also other secret ingredients making it so delicious), chewy noodles, plenty of toppings (pork, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, corn, sea weed, and scallions). The noodles are less than $10 per bowl. You can't get better than a hot bowl of authentic Japanese ramen on a freezing cold Michigan winter night. One of the few Japanese spots I've enjoyed since moving from Japan. My girlfriend and I were actually looking for a different Japanese restaurant we enjoyed previously, but accidentally stumbled upon this gem. It's a surprisingly small location, but packs a huge punch. One of my favorite Japanese dishes of all time is ton-katsu curry (breaded pork cutlet and curry on top). Let me preface this review by stating I know next to nothing about what traditional Japanese ramen is supposed to be like. My somewhat limited scope of ramen knowledge comes from eating at Mentatsu Ramen, Ramen Yamadaya, Santouka Ramen, Kosuke, Shin-Sen-Gumi Hakata Ramen, and Daikokuya in Southern California. My personal preference runs along what Shin-Sen-Gumi and Daikokuya are known for: a rich, porky broth and a particular style of noodles. Given this past experience, I'm slightly disappointed with Matsuchan. I know we're in the Midwest and not Little Tokyo in Downtown L.A. but the glowing reviews got my hopes up that I'd find something similar to what I enjoy back in California. Matsuchan's ramen noodles are yellow. The boyfriend says Matsuchan's ramen style is more like what we've had at Mentatsu. I honestly can't remember so I'll take his word for it since he's the one that's actually obsessed with ramen. He ordered what Matsuchan calls the porksoup ramen (we're guessing it's the tonkotsu style) whereas I got the butter corn ramen which came with a clear broth. I tasted his broth and I'd have to agree with other reviews that it's a touch too salty. I don't think it's downright inedible though; however, I like salty foods. He also ordered extra pork, but only got 3 pieces like I did. We were charged the additional $4 for the extra pork, but they were closing up and our waitress was so kind that we decided it wasn't worth the fuss to bring it up. Pork was of a decent thickness but rough and chewy. I honestly wasn't a fan of my clear broth ramen at all. It didn't really have a flavor and was borderline too greasy for my taste. I've had corn butter ramen before at Kosuke and it wasn't like what I had at Matsuchan at all. I wish it was easier to customize what add-ins you can put in your ramen as I'm personally not a fan of all the add-ins that automatically came with every bowl of ramen. Despite the 2 star rating, the boyfriend definitely wants to come back and try something else. I agree that it's worth it to return and at least try something else. Since I was one of the first customers they had since they opened their little authentic Japanese ramen restaurant in Canton, the nice Japanese couple (owner) got to know me well, so I may be a bit bias in this review. A great place to drop in for a quick and cheap dinner, easily keep it around $10/person. At one point, I made it my personal mission to try ever dish on the menu, which by the way is taped on the wall. While their ramen is not the greatest in the world, it's nice to have a good ramen place in Canton, MI. In the summer, they have hiyashi-chuka (cold noodles) which is great. This is not a date place. My obstacle was the SNOW on Saturday night that happened to cancel an Event the next morning. I had a mission and no extreme weather was going to keep me from my appointed round at Matsuchan Ramen. This Ramen-ya was staffed by a Japanese Lady(Waitress), Japanese mid-age Men(Cook), and a helper of Latin descent. The Menu is more extensive than any Ramen-ya that I've visited in Toronto. There was enough Ramen selections alone to contemplate over and that's if you aren't thinking about Appetizers or Rice Dishes. Pork Soup Ramen(Tonkotsu $9.00) - The average variety Noodle picked up just the right amount of Milky Broth and gave it slurp-ability. I agree that the Broth can be salty if consumed continuously which made it best to eat with the Noodle rather than chugging the Broth afterwards. The Broth was super heated as if it was prepared with a SUPERNOVA and continued to be hot long after finishing the contents of the bowl(Bamboo Shoot, Green Scallion, Seaweed, 1 dry Nori, 1 slice Fish Cake and couple slices of Pork). The Pork Slices weren't in the typical log-shape but I appreciate it just as much. I'm thinking that not too many customers will chug the Broth after finishing the contents. When I moved to Michigan from southern California, I had resigned myself to not eating delicious ramen until I had time to travel again. Matsuchan was the ramen miracle I needed in my life. From the second I walked in the door, I knew it was the real deal. It reminded me of my favorite ramen places I've been to. You walk in to find a small, packed, family-owned restaurant with the amazing, familiar smells of home-cooked ramen and curry. It may take a while to get a seat (30-45 minutes usually), but if you read Japanese, they have a great manga/magazine collection for you while you wait. When you get the opportunity to sit down, it feels like any small-town cafe. I have ordered many items here, but I'll focus on a few that are worth commenting on: 1. Ramen - I always get the spicy miso ramen, which is delicious. It's not in the league of Little Tokyo (Los Angeles) restaurants like Shinsengumi or Daikokuya, but is still fantastic in its own right. You can tell the broth was made with skill and care. If you are attempting to satisfy your ramen cravings, this will certainly be more than adequate. 2. Takoyaki - Standard. I haven't had much variation for this dish across Japanese restaurants. If you like it at other restaurants, you'll like it here. 3. Beef curry - This was not as good as I would have hoped. I would say this was my least favorite dish I have had there. It's nothing special, in my opinion. 4. Fried rice - Pretty good, but also nothing special. 5. Tonkatsu - Really good. This tastes like all of the home-cooked tonkatsu that I have enjoyed in the past. I recommend trying it here. I can't believe I've never been here after living in Ann Arbor for 6+ years! It took me moving away to come here! A group of 4 of us stopped by here on our way back east. We were seated right away (8pm on a Saturday) and was served right away. The ramen is utterly delicious here! The bowls are gigantic as well! The ramen is flavorful and the fried rice mixed with homemade mustard was great! The space is small and eclectic with different states license plates tacked on the walls. For people like me who crave Santouka year-round (yelp it! closest is Chicago), but can't seem to find anything even remotely resembling real ramen in Michigan--the high rent kind with al dente noodles and fatty, smoky broth-- this is the closest to satisfaction you'll find. The miso-tonkotsu broth is really good: they combine the miso broth and the fatty white pork broth to make a nice balanced soup. The toppings are pretty basic: chashu pork, bean sprouts, menma, and green onions; you should pay the extra 75 cents for the egg--no ramen is complete without an egg on top. This will add up to $10.25. A side salad here is a $1 (i'm not kidding!) and their chicken wings are pretty nice too. I'd avoid the "shio" here, known as the "clear soup," which tasted literally like the salt broth it is without any body. They also have meat and rice bowls (oyako, pork & ginger, sukiyaki and rice) that looked good. I'll have to try those next time. read more

But this place it's nowhere close to what we expect. The broth was watery (both broth), noodles were over cooked, the pork slices didn't have much flavor. The fried rice was very sticky and wet. Overall, the food was very disappointing. The service was fine when we first sat down but it quickly went downhill. My husband food didn't come until 5-10 mins after mine. We waited for a fairly long time to get the check. One server for 8 tables. That may be a bit much for him to handle. Don't get me wrong, the server was nice. The food was unique and delicious. To avoid the crowd, we ordered take out. However, it was a long wait for our order to be completed.

We ordered the Chanpon ($10.50) and Pork Soup Ramen ($9) with a side of Gyoza ($4.75). Gyoza was bland, and it tasted frozen. Filling was not good and the skin wasn't the right consistency. The Chanpon was massive like how everybody stated, but the broth wasn't flavorful and tasted just like it was salt and msg. The Pork Soup Ramen broth was equally as disappointing. We had to add the vinegar and chili pepper to give it something, and it still didn't help. So sad. :( The noodles were chewy, so at least that was okay, but the vegetables, pork, seafood (which is only shrimp here) were old and frozen. The pork slices in the Pork Soup Ramen were packaged and there was only 2 slices. Final bill was $24.25. For the aforementioned food that we ordered, it was definitely not worth it. This is so exciting! I'm a little embarrassed that I haven't been here earlier when it's practically in my backyard. My husband has had many trips to Japan and we have Japanese friends who all say - this is authentic Japanese Ramen. Boy were they all right! It's HOT and fast and incredibly fresh and homemade tasting. The line goes out the door during lunch time so either get Take Away or patiently wait for a table (all totally worth it). There's something to be said for finding gems wherever you're at. It's knowing what you're looking for and making sure you're tenacious enough to find it. Matsuchan is one of those gems and takes both time and tenacity to find but once you do, you'll know the effort was worth it. I wanted ramen! I needed it! I mean, I had ramen at home but it's not the kind where the broth have been stewing for 14 hours and the broth was strained constantly till there is no gunk and that there is clarity in the broth. I did not have that kind of ramen. I had the kind where you have a powdered soup base. Vastly different than what Matsuchan offered. And indeed, I did get the ramen I was hoping for. I wasn't looking forward to the drive as I live in freakin' Southgate and this is in Canton. The drive wasn't appealing, but then again, living in Southgate and Downriver in general, NO DRIVE is appealing. But the ramen crave was strong so the drive had to be made. That, and I worked out later than would have liked so I was in a time crunch as well. This place is tucked away from the razzle dazzle of Ford Rd in Canton, MI. Canton is a growing village town. No central mall but when you have IKEA right off the I-275 freeway, who cares? So with this growing village, you'll also get diversity of cultures. There is a growing Arabic population as just 6 miles east is Dearborn where the Middle Eastern presence is strong and their glorious food items are a dime a dozen. Canton also has a strong Asian presence but not as prevalent which means it takes some extra searching, especially of the Oriental variety since there is also a huge Indian presence here as well. So the fight for good East Asian cuisine is quite the battle but that's what makes this place worth it. If you read my Nagomi review, you'll know how much I love that place. Matsuchan as a ramen joint is, on principle, the same thing. There are a few differences such as the size of the restaurant, the method of service, price point, and overall decorum. There are slight difference with the ramen as well between the two. Not bad, just different which I'll explain later. Matsuchan is smaller than Nagomi. Seats about 25 total people so it is quite small but quaint and cozy which makes for a pretty interesting experience. Nagomi has the space for about triple that or so. The service of Matsuchan is a sit down while Naogmi is more cafeteria style which is more so how they do in Japan. You take a ticket, bring it to the counter, the cook calls your ticket number, and you eat. It's a very cafeteria style establishment. Matsuchan, you order from the menu and the server takes your order and in 4-8 minutes time, you get your ramen. Again, different. Why the 4 star and not the 5? It's the hours of operation, price point, and for me, the distance. Matsuchan closes at 2 on Tuesdays through Thursdays. So clearly daytime/lunchtime visits during work hours aren't gonna cut it. But you know it's legit when they close at 2 and reopen at 5 ish on Friday to Sunday. And obviously, living in Southgate, getting there in time is a chore. And the hours of operations making it hard to carve time out. The only solid star killer here is the price point. Nagomi isn't as expensive. A $9 bowl of Shoyu ramen with an extra pork helping for $1.50 or so turns your ramen experience to be aboue $11. Matsuchan's $9 bowl is the same sure, but extra roast pork costs you $4 and then you need to tip which turns this into a $15-$17 bowl of ramen. A very pricey bowl at that. So unless you got paid that week, you may want to try and tide your ramen desire till you can splurge. Hence the 4-stars. Now to get to the actual brunt of this review, the ramen. I will always do a blind test, but based on what I know. I know Shoyu Ramen which is a pork/beef broth based soup laced with soy sauce so there is a depth and richness to the flavor. But there is a big difference between Nagomi and Matsuchan. Nagomi's shoyu ramen broth has a lot more richness and depth of flavor to it. Matsuchan is light and has a bit more of that salty bite but with all the benefits of salt! Very rewarding. It hits the pallet quickly and is quite satisfying in a different sense than Nagomi which hits the pallet but lingers and the flavors is drawn out more in your throat and definitely coats the pallet in a different way. Again, not bad, just different. The noodles are smaller and thinner than Nagomi which doesn't hold the broth as well as the thicker noodles but there definitely is more texture to the thinner noodles which makes the flavor of the broth come out more and since the broth is lighter, there's a definite sharpness to the taste which isn't overpowered by the noodles which makes it a nice compliment. I've been coming here for 26 years and my parents even longer, the owner is amazing and runs such a great restaurant. They have the best ramen sets around, classic sushi, and other classic Japanese staples. The chicken bowl is one of my family's favorites!
