I came in for a late dinner this evening after a long day of walking around DC and was majorly craving some sushi while heading back on Red Line. This restaurant is near my hotel so I thought to give it a try. I ordered 3 uni, 1 toro, 1 ikura and 1 hamachi along with a hot tea. The meal also came with complimentary soup and salad brought out first. The miso soup tasted as it should though the small salad, it was flooded with dressing and I wasn't a big fan of that and ended up eating less than half of it. For the fish portion, the hamachi and ikura were good as was the uni (my personal favorite) but for today, it was all about the toro. Some restaurants don't even carry it so I was both surprised and a little worried to order it. I decided to give it a try since the price was just $12.95 for 2 pieces which is actually pretty inexpensive. It was really tasty and I was impressed with it and would have ordered another but I was getting full. Personally, I don't like to be bothered much while eating dinner, especially sushi. It's kind of weird but it's just how I am. My waitress, Amoii, was kind and checked on me just the right amount of times. The Good: 1) Usually easy to get a seat at lunch time 2) Soup is included with lunch 3) There are several types of sushi and rolls to pick from 4) There are other side dishes - tempura, salad, and various other hot entree's to choose from The Bad: 1) You have to look hard to find the fish in the rolls, mainly rice. 2) The sushi pieces are pretty small, but you can get as many as you want Overall - it's not bad. If I want sushi and I'm in Frederick I usually go here. This place can not touch Yuraku's Sushi buffet in Germantown. They're the same price and the pieces are huge compared to Matsutake's. Plus the fish tastes fresher in Germantown. Densha - which is new, also has a sushi buffet, but it doesn't include as much as Matsutake, but it does have the neat revolving belt you can pick sushi from as it goes by. Our visit today had lack luster service. We didn't get offered drinks until we were ready to pay the bill and our plates weren't cleared until then also. Came for my son's birthday dinner last night and our first impression was good. The hostess looked completely morose and annoyed, she may have been having a bad day completely unrelated to the restaurant. We thought we wanted hibachi at first so she went to sit us down at the hibachi grill, but then our son said he wanted the all you can eat sushi. We told the hostess we changed our mind and she looked like she was about to cry. "is that a big deal?" I said. not a great start but dinner made up for it. The all you can eat dinner is totally worth it. We all got our money's worth of appetizers and sushi. i'm vegan and was able to make a great meal for myself with veggie roll, cucumber roll, bean curd, edamame, and veggie tempura. My only complaint is the miso soup was really dismal. My son ordered maybe 7 or 8 fried and specialty rolls, way too much lol but he was having a blast. of course he couldn't eat it all and wanted to take it home. The waitress wasn't sure if he was allowed since it was the all you can eat deal, but after asking she said if we paid for the most expensive roll on top of the all you can eat price ($25) he could take it home. We gladly paid. Upon returning from the bathroom I saw that the sushi chefs had made him a little birthday platter of oranges carved like a panda! It was so cute and a nice gesture. One of the worst lunch experiences I've ever had. Horrible service. As me and my father entered the premises we were struck by no host waiting at the door. After we waited in the Arcade for 5 minutes we ventured in to seat ourselves. After seeing us and causally pointing us to a table the waitress ignored us. I wanted to order the steak, after luring the waitress over she not only was uninterested in taking our order, but she shyly muttered something about all you can eat dinner. The buffet was even disgusting for a buffet. Raw fish should not be served under a heat lamp. This place should be shut done, the chefs are trying as hard to avoid food safety regulations as the waitresses are trying to avoid you. Two words: roach infestation. It's bad enough that you sort of take a risk when eating sushi. But sushi in a place where there were roachES (several). One by the wall and another by the sushi bar!!! This was during a lunch rush, roaches typically don't galavant around during a time when the bunch of people are present. They tend to wait at night and gather in little of groups like a poker game. So if these guys are out at this time of day...simply confirms that there are a lot of roaches in there! The customers pointed the roaches out to the servers. So the servers got napkin and got the roach, threw the napkin away and proceeded to the credit card machine to process the payment for a table WITHOUT washing their hands!!!! My experience with Matsutake is admittedly limited (I have eaten in there once, and taken out sushi two other times) but each time I've had their food, it's been nothing short of amazing. Matsutake is technically a steakhouse, but I may never get to try their steak because the sushi is SO GOOD! I'm admittedly a sushi lightweight, focusing mainly on maki (rolled sushi), but I can't imagine that the deliciousness of their shrimp tempura rolls and Philly rolls doesn't carry over to any kind of sushi you might care to order. The atmosphere is great -- clean and elegant with just a hint of Japanese quirkiness. The staff are friendly and seem happy to be serving you. Calling to order take-out sushi is painless (and I usually HATE doing business over the phone!) I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit of a sushi snob and am quite picky when it comes to fine Japanese food. But I'll happily take decent Japanese food. True Japanese restaurants are hard to find (and truly good sushi even harder). That being said, Matsutake really misses the bar. Like most "Japanese" establishments in the area, the ownership isn't Japanese you'd be hard pressed to find a real Japanese chef in the house. I've dined a few times at their "hibachi" bar and found the food to be.. meh. The steak was just not tasteful, tough, overdone and almost gamey. The preparation and show wastes a perfectly good cut of meat. The chicken is O.K. The sushi is inconsistent, at best. The quality of the fish is decent but the real problems lie in the rice. The fundamental base of decent sushi is the rice. It should hold together, and be a good balance of barely sweet and barely sour. Some days their rice is passable, other days I am in awe at how my sushi nearly falls apart upon the touch. While specialty rolls are an anchor in American-style sushi restaurants, the rolls at Matsutake are frighteningly gauche. Occasionally I get desperate for sushi and venture out Almost every time, I am gently reminded of why I stay away. Better stick to some of the establishments in Bethesda and towards the District. The kitchen food is good enough to make me want to eat here. The staff is usually friendly enough. The real reason to dine here is for the entertainment factor, rather than the food. read more

The first thing we noticed was that this place was more expensive than other hibachi restaurants we've been to. The meals themselves were at least $5 more a piece and came without a fried rice option unless you paid $2 extra, it also didn't come with any noodles with no options to add. From the minute I walked in the door, this was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. I visited the ballston location before it closed about a year ago but that was just for sushi. I had a good experience but there but the Frederick location was horrible. The evening started with the hostess at the door (bleached hair and glasses). She was easily one of the top 5 rudest people I have ever met. The waitress that took our drink orders was underage and couldn't really answer any questions pertaining to the drink menu. I asked for a large Sapporo as was listed in the menu and I got a pint. When I questioned it I was told that it was "regular," which wasn't an option on the menu. Speaking of the menu, everything was wayyy over priced. Oh and speaking of price..."filet mignon" and "New York strip" virtually the same price? When these cuts came out they were not like any filet mignon or ny strip I had ever seen. Along with a chicken cutlet this was $26...worth $12-$15. I get that you pay for the show but I don't like dealing with a business that takes the customer for a fool. My advice to management is to take a long hard look in the mirror because if your restaurant is half empty on Valentine's Day weekend with a movie theater next door you are doing something extremely wrong. read more

Don't get too excited for an authentic meal to go with the "show." DISCLAIMER: We lived in Japan for three years, I worked as a chef in two restaurants there, with a fully Japanese staff. (I'm no rookie when it comes to Japanese food.) Although we were seated at a hibachi table and my spouse ordered salmon/rice/veggies from the hibachi, i was intrigued to see that we could also order items from the kitchen. Other than the salmon (who can mess up salmon?) the other items were simply not impressive. The rice was burned on the flattop grill and then served. When the Hispanic man who was "performing" the meal for us figured out I had ordered something from the kitchen, rather than the hibachi, he turned to me in front of the rest of the diners and said "you don't like my food??" The other diners looked at me like I had just eaten a live baby or something! Well, guess what Mr. knife-flingin' Hispanic/Japanese imposter.....there are 2 red meat items on the menu, a rib eye ($21) and a filet ($25)....rib eye is my FAVORITE cut....they were out of those, at 7pm?!?!? really???? I am thrilled to report the yakisoba was authentic, while the veggies in the yakisoba were clearly overcooked, the flavor was RIGHT out of Aomorri prefecture (where we lived). Feel free to get JUST the yakisoba...I ordered it with chicken and the chicken was flavorless anyway. As an app, we ordered the gyoza (pronounced gee-yo-za), regardless of the waitress correcting my spouse by saying "you mean guy-o-za?" To which he repeated "Yes, we want the gee-yo-za." The gyoza was delicious, but deep fried, not prepared "pot-sticker" style the way it's actually done. After the meal, other diners at our hibachi asked the waitress if there were also Japanese hibachi "performers" and she stated "Everyone here is Korean, except me, actually. I am 1/4 Japanese." Everyone else in the restaurant is Hispanic, Caucasian, or "other." Please understand me here...this typically would not matter to me IF the food were authentic, but this is like going to Taco Bell for Mexican food...you get the idea. I asked the other diners if they knew of any other hibachi restaurants and could recommend any places, the response was Benihana's. I won't say more. read more

We arrived here, after making reservations for 11 people to celebrate a birthday, on to have to wait an additional 40 minutes to get seated. During that wait time I approached the hostess and asked what was up but she didn't seem to care and blew me off. So I found the manager and asked him. Just when I thought it was going to be a frustrating evening it turned around. The manager was great to us. It turns out the place is under new management and they are really trying to get it right. It did seem fresher and nicer than all the previous times we dined here. The tables, floors and decor are all new. The manager got us seated, made sure his staff was on the ball and hooked us up with a round of drinks. He also threw in a couple ninja drink mugs for the kids. Weekends this place is always busy but now they have a really good manager who cares about the customer so I assume it's going to be a great experience every time. When we walked in, they had first opened and it smelled like old urine/beer. The table we sat at was sticky...which was gross, meaning they didn't wipe them from the night before. The floor is sticky. Gross. The hallway to the bathroom has black tar-like stuff on the baseboards. How does that even happen? It took us about 10 mins to get waters...and another 30 for someone to come back and refill. How does this place even stay open? read more

The experience was pretty good. I got there pretty late, and there were not too many people left. A prominent sign on the buffet explained they do not let the food sit out endlessly, but you have to wonder. I tried several rolls, listing toward the cooked side, but trying some raw as well. It was all tasty. The hot food looked the worse off for arriving so late - basically the dregs left over, and not much to recommend it. As I was close to finishing, the server (they were all very nice) asked if I wanted any more food as the buffet was closing. I sauntered over for a last couple of pieces, and was please to see the staff descending on the buffet once it was "closed". Definitely a good sign that they wanted to eat it. This is strictly a lunch review. This is a good once-in-a-while lunch time choice for me. I generally go for the sushi buffet which is usually pretty good but sort of expensive for a lunch (around $15 after tax and tip). The fish is fresh and they have a decent selection. The rolls and nigiri are pretty standard buffet-type things (yellow tail, salmon, tuna, california, etc.). Don't expect things like Rainbow Rolls or Dragon Rolls. You can get them off the menu but they don't come with the buffet. There is also some miso soup, vegetable tempura and some random dishes that look more Chinese. They also do the hibachi grill which is always fun. The food from that is pretty standard I think. It's good but not great. One thing I don't like is the tea they serve. It tends to be a little burnt tasting. I don't know if that's because they brew it when the water is too hot or it's just the type of tea they use. The decor is nice and it never gets too crowded, except maybe on Fridays. When it does get crowded they can be a little slow about replacing sushi that is out and because of the presentation of all the food you can end up waiting in line for a little bit. The service can be a bit slow, especially if you're going for the buffet, but they are pretty friendly. read more

my family used to love coming here, but it's really lost all touch.. i'm not sure whats going on in the kitchen but every time we come in for early dinner (bc we had come to expect wait times to be ridiculous. not what you want for a restaurant) less than half the tables are full but it takes 30 minutes for us to be seated. then, another 15 for the salad/soup, and 45 for the chef to come out for hibachi. this is more than a 90 minute wait for food to actually get on our plates, on a weekday for early dinner. service is so inattentive; like another reviewer said, you can see waitresses grouped together chatting while holding drinks and food instead of getting them to tables first. not only is quality of service going downhill, but so is the food's. i wouldnt be as bothered by this if the price point was lower but this place is expensive for old undercooked rice and not fresh seafood. i cant speak for the sushi bar or dining section, but hibachi leaves us feeling pretty cheated. read more
