It was way too salty and saucey to the point, we were eating one bite then drinking water right after. It was a pretty simple dish with what looked like frozen carrots and peas and some cut up chicken. Lunch Bento Box Option 2: We opted in for the teriyaki salmon, gyoza, and salmon roll. It came with a side of salad and miso soup. The salmon was cut very thin and it did not have enough teriyaki sauce on it. It was on the dry side. The gyoza was nothing too special. Just felt frozen then dried with gyoza sauce. Miso soup and salad were also just decent. The best part of this meal probably had to be the salmon roll. I liked the big portions of salmon and the little rice on the outside. This was the perfect balance instead of just getting a mouthful of rice each bit like most other sushi places do. I think this place was decent, overall. The prices were definitely on the higher side for what you get. With a set up similar to that of Panda Express (or the old Sorabol chain in the Bay Area), where most of their food is already prepared instead of made-to-order, California Gogi Grill is definitely optimized for folks grabbing their food on the go. However, despite how everything sits out, the majority of their dozen or so meat options and sides still looked decent. Of the various options they have on the menu (combos and bowls with your choice of meats and sides), I opted to go with a STACKED BOWL with their Spicy Pork, Bulgogi, and Japchae over White Rice and their Pickled Cucumbers, Kimchi, Broccoli, Pickled Soy Radish, and two sides of Radish Kimchi (I asked for the mild kimchi, but got another of this instead). On the plus side, I liked how the sides are on a separate tray with slots to help keep them segregated from each other and the meats/japchae looked decent. However, the taste of this fell short. Maybe I just chose poorly, but both the bulgogi and spicy pork felt a bit bland (more so the former than the latter) and some pieces bordered on dry. As for the sides, the broccoli, spicy cucumbers, and radish kimchi were fine, but the kimchi was a lot more sour than I expected and I didn't care for the pickled soy radish. The rice also felt a little overcooked, but the japchae was actually pretty solid, especially since I figured there was a good chance of being mealy. Between how everything sits out and how it was well after the lunch crowd (not as much turnover), it bothered me less that the meats were dry-ish and more that they were so light on marinade/sauce. Still, even though they didn't do much for me, I can see the appeal California Gogi Grill can have with UC Irvine kids. If nothing else, the portions aren't too shabby for the money, they have multiple options at different price points, and they get you in and out pretty quickly. Perhaps I'll come back and try again, especially closer to peak lunch or dinner hour, when the meats might be have been more recently cooked, but, for now, TWO AND A HALF STARS rounded down. Sorry.

I ordered through Uber Eats using the buy one get one free deal. The total came out to $95 for four bowls and one appetizer. Yes, I understand Uber Eats inflates prices, so I compared the Uber Eats prices with the restaurant's own menu online. The difference was significant. I still bit the bullet because it was Uber Eats and because the two for one deal made it seem somewhat justifiable. That was a mistake. Now to the food. First, the bowls look decent in size at a glance, which initially made me think I got my money's worth. That illusion disappears quickly when you realize about three quarters of each bowl is just shredded cabbage or rice. And not good rice either. It was either extremely soggy or dry and hard depending on the bowl. Second, the wagyu garlic fried rice was a joke. It came with literally four thin slices of meat. I could not tell if it was wagyu at all. The meat was chewy, not tender, and completely underwhelming. The dish had zero flavor. No seasoning. No depth. Nothing. Even drowning it in sauce did not help. In fact, adding sauce just made it worse because of how greasy and oily the bowl already was. It became nauseating. At first, I thought maybe they took the supposed four to six ounces of Australian wagyu from one bowl and split it between both bowls to justify the two for one deal. After reading other reviews, it is clear this is a consistent issue and not a one off mistake. Third, the garlic fried rice tasted like cardboard. The spicy wagyu bowl my wife ordered somehow tasted worse. Wet cardboard. The rice was soaked and mushy, the meat was slightly more tender than mine but still completely flavorless. This place relies on inflated delivery pricing and gimmicky promotions to mask extremely low quality food and embarrassingly small protein portions. I will never order from here again. They could offer me a full refund plus extra money to take this review down and I would still refuse.
