We had the fish special, which was recommended, and it was excellent! Fresh mahi mahi and crispy risotto in a butter wine sauce. I originally ordered the butternut squash ravioli but the sauce was similar to an alfredo sauce and not a browned butter sauce, so I sent it back. We also split the zucca salad which was great but they charged $2 more...hard to say if it was due to splitting since the menu didn't mention a charge. Also, the waiter asked if we wanted bread but didn't let us know there was a charge for that as well. Minor, but they should mention it. We sat in the bar area on a high top and it was fine. We came as a big party, highly recommend reservations because this place get busy. We came on a Tuesday dinner time and could not get seated any earlier because all tables were full. Parking is very easy as it is located in a plaza and the service is very attentive. My water cup was never empty. House salad: sweet tangy and a good amount of creamy cheese Cesar salad: very good and even came with anchovies. I didn't get to try the anchovies but those that tried it said it was quite tasty Meatballs: their signature dish. It was pretty good, but wish there was a bit of a tang to it Bolognese: loved how they cooked the pasta and the meat sauce was tasty, the ground beef they used was quite lean so wasn't super oily Apparata with spicy sausage: good flavor, would order again. I loved the spicy sausage as well. Came here with a big party for a special event. Service was great and welcoming, wwith a start of complimentary bread and olive oil to our tables. Arrabiata- penne pasta with spicy pomodoro sauce , with added Italian sausage - my fav dish here after trying multiple dishes. It had a perfect kick, and not spicy for me. Bolognese - plenty of minced beef but not enough tomato sauce Chicken Parmesan- decent juicy chicken, but i believe it was served with tagliatelle pasta which i didnt care for. We recently decided to celebrate several birthdays and milestones at Matteo's Osteria. The team was nothing less than amazing and so accommodating. It was a beautiful night and we were seated outside which was so pleasant. The patio was warm and inviting. Drinks were delicious and came out quickly. We ordered several appetizers and they also came out quickly for our hungry clan. Several members of our party went with the nightly special and the kitchen was able to accommodate some tweaks. 8 of us had a reservation at 4:45 when they first opened and they were very welcoming. The bread and olive oil was yummy that came to the table. The Caesar salad was very good. The meatballs were mixed reviews. Husband had the arrabiattia and it was too spicy to enjoy the penne. However the espresso martini he loved! My sister in law mom and I had the ravioli. My sister in law thought it was pretty standard however I thought it was really delicious with the pumpkin seeds. My dad had the bolognese and loved it. Delicious homemade tagliatelle bolognese pasta and kids penne. The bolognese was rich and flavorful with generous portions of freshly made pasta. My kiddo liked her penne pasta but hated the turkey meatball. The turkey meatballs had an odd taste and texture, so we swapped for chicken instead. We got sat outside on a very warm night even though we had made reservations. I got a salad and added fish and the meal ended up being almost $50. Had I known they would charge $25 for the salad and $25 for the fish I would've ordered something else. Truly just OK and the waiter seemed overwhelmed and rushed us. Kiana was fabulous! Really really great service... Kiana was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. Appetizers we had the bruschetta with tuna which was delicious and they brought us some yummy tomato bisque in little espresso cups which was great. The breads were delicious as well. Maine course I had the special Arabiatta which was yumm... our wine was delicious! Then came dessert... strike 1, no affogato! What? Coffee machine was broken... understandable, not a big deal.. so I had the Tiramisu... super disappointing... would not recommend it... Overall, a delicious meal and we would go back... but I'd recommend they fire their pastry chef or whoever made that very lame tiramisu! read more

Tasted like charcoal fluid and dish soap I had the sambuca chicken. Simply awful dry and salty. They took off my bill and replaced with chicken Parmesan. Also dry-and tasted previously frozen and microwaved. Just terrible. They also did remove from bill. This was a gem of a restaurant! My husband and I were craving Italian food and this was less than a mile from our hotel. When we arrived it was busy, but we were quickly attended to by the two hostesses at the front. They were both very friendly. We decided to sit at the bar because we didn't have a reservation; we were seated no more than 5 minutes after we arrived. Our server for the evening was the bartender who did a great job juggling the bar and the orders of all of us dining at the bar. Again, she was very warm and friendly. She always made sure to check in and provide refills on drinks. The food was great. I had the bolognese and added the turkey meatballs. I was a little hesitant about the turkey meatballs as I have not had good experiences with that in the past, but I was pleasantly proven wrong here as I enjoyed every bite. All pastas are made in-house and you can really taste that difference. The prices are on the higher end (which is why it's not a 5 star), but I didn't mind that as much since we were provided good service and good food. read more

I had dinner here recently and had a really nice experience. I was sat inside but it was near the open door so I had some fresh air. My waitress took good care of me, came by often and was attentive. I started with the CIAO BELLA cocktail: Drake's Organic Vodka | St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur | Aperol | House Lemon Juice . This was really flavorful. I enjoyed it. I had the OSTERIA salad - Arugula / Endive / Red Grapes / Gorgonzola Cheese / House-made Candied Walnuts / Creamy Lemon Dressing. Great toppings, flavorful dressing. A nice sized portion. For my entree, I did one of the specials that night - a mushroom risotto which I added grilled shrimp to. The portion was huge. The rice was flavorful, soft but not too mushy. Good mushroom flavor. Going to an Italian restaurant in Maui it's probably not the first thing that comes to mind, but we had several reservations for this week and I wanted to have different types of culinary experiences. I'll start by saying that our expectations were exceeded in every way. The atmosphere is very nice and we sat outside on a covered patio type setting and it was considerably quieter than the inside part of the restaurant so that was a big plus. There were numerous nice touches even before we ordered, including freshly baked focaccia, and a sampling of a roasted cauliflower soup served in demitasse cup. We started with splitting a Caesar salad, which was more than enough for two. It was lightly dressed, and it was delicious and not overpowering. My lovely date had the seafood pasta. The squid ink pasta was al dente as it should be and the dish was full of seafood in a light lobster broth. She said it was the best seafood pasta she's ever had. I had a chicken Parm that was on the specials menu, and I felt like the serving size was a full chicken. It was lightly breaded and the sauce and cheese were very tasty. I chose spaghetti for the pasta and it was perfect and the serving size was more than generous. We wish we had saved room for dessert because the mele apple tart in puff pastry looked incredible. And then there was our server. If you are a fan of my reviews, you know that I tend to focus more on the food than the service. Our server tonight was Kiana, and she was among the best we've ever had. Friendly, warm and attentive from start to finish, she is a great representative of the restaurant. We felt like a friend was taking care of us. If you have a car, there is lots of parking in the lot and we were lucky enough to be staying close by. Be sure to make a reservation. read more

Made a reservation here on a Friday night while staying in the area. After a lackluster meal at Olivine, we were looking forward to a more stabilized Italian meal and experience somewhere else. We had a reservation for 8:30, however - they called asking us if we could come around 8 instead. We drove here and parked walking g up at 7:50 thinking this would help them even more. Nope. We were told the table wouldn't be ready until 8:15. ??????????????!!!!!!!!!! To make matters even worse a walk-in came up- and was sat before us. What's the point of a reservation again? We started with the burrata caprese salad to start. It passed the eye test, but there's was an odd taste to it - wasn't sure if it was the tomato but there was a high acid taste to them. Almost chemical. The special was chicken Parmesan - they were out - so I went with the spaghetti carbonara. And to be honest, I am glad I did. This may have been the best version of carbonara I have had in quite a long time. The pancetta was crispy and salty, and the sauce was perfectly done. Wow. For dessert, I ordered the lemon coconut cannoli and a cup of coffee. The cannoli was meh - they really need a proper cheesecake option. read more

This was probably my favorite meal during our time in Maui. We decided to share a bunch of apps and entrees since so many things appealed to us. We started with shrimp (rolled in ham), a flatbread and meatballs. All were great, but the shrimp seemed to be the favorite among our table. For our entrees our party of 4 shared 2 orders of the squid ink pasta since everyone wanted that along with a chicken parm. The pasta was great and the chicken parm looked great, but we were SO full from everything else that we couldn't eat more than a bite of it. Our waiter had told us it would be the prefect amount of food, but perhaps he under estimated our appetites. And all the delicious bread they served us with our apps filled is as well. I brought back to our hotel half the pasta and the entire chicken parm and enjoyed some of it cold for lunch the next day. Too full for dessert, but my kids found room for cannolis which seemed to be the perfect ending to our meal. Everyone agreed it was delicious and that they would come back if in Maui again. read more

We were in Maui for a week. Tried many of the highly ranked restaurants. This was the least favorite. The seafood dishes were the most disappointing, bland and lacked seasoning. The fish fritters tasted like old fish. We gave feedback, and the waiter replied with "that's unfortunate". The by glass wine list is short and unimpressive. One of the best Italian meals we have ever had. Restaurant was BUSY at 5:30, surprisingly so. Reservations at least a week in advance if you want a table in "busy" season. Table service was excellent, although he did spill a bit of my martini when served. Food was fantastic; Bruschetta with tuna appetizer was crazy good. The short rib entree was excellent. She has the Fettuccini di Mare - excellent choice as well. Cabernet by the galls was excellent. Very expensive, all in - but it was the finest dining we experienced on our vacation to Maui. Wife and I came in 5 minutes before our reservation time, seated promptly and ready to order. Server got our drinks pretty quick and then disappeared, never even asked if we might be ready to order, spoiler alert, we were. Saw him 20 minutes later serving wine at larger top tables than ours, and he still walked past us, ignoring us, while handling other tables. Final straw came when he started to take the entree orders of the table next to us who were seated well after us. So, I've never walked out of an establishment before, preferring to give the benefit of the doubt to the server, but to be ignored and left to sit, was too much this time, so we walked out. If you've had exceptional service at Matteo's, good for you - we did too the week before and a $300+ tab, that's why we booked a table again for the night before we left. But all it takes is that one ridiculous experience to turn you off from a place. We won't be back, not that Matteo's or thier wannabe Sommelier would notice. read more

My friend who worked in the culinary field at several restaurants around Maui recommended this spot when I said that I was looking for some of the best food on the Island. I love a good Italian spot so I was eager to try. Our meal was lovely from start to finish. The lilikoi Italian soda was delicious and refreshing and focaccia bread with oil was great. Foccacia is my favorite kind of bread so any place that serves this is automatically on my good side lol. The chicken parmesan was *muah* *Chef's kiss* fried perfectly and seasoned really well, and served in a good-sized portion. Our waitress was really nice. When she asked my friend and me what the occasion was, I told her that I was reconnecting with my childhood friend I hadn't seen in 20 years, she was nice enough to give us dessert on the house, and that tiramisu was bussin! We are locals in Wailea and frequent dinner. Last night we had chicken parmigiana with spaghetti and it was tasteless and marina sauce was lack luster. The chicken breast was breaded and was on the dry side. Our other friends agree that may be an off night. I had their special homemade parpadella with shredded beef and truffles which was fabulous and amazingly delicious. Service was also off and waited 15 minutes before they serve us the bread and amuse bouche. Ambiance was nice clean. I still love this restaurant and will give it a try next time. read more

Food was tasty and service was good, no complaints there. I'm sure it's par for course on the island (it's our first time in Hawaii), but we got the gnocchi vodka special (just pasta and sauce, no meat). Imagine our surprise when it ended up costing 42 dollars. Again, this may be par for the course for the island and it's not like you're paying for a bad product or service.
