The California pizza was by far the favorite but the lamb burger, filet mignon stroganoff, and Caesar salad with anchovy dressing were all excellent. It's been a few years since I've been here as I am not local. We were a party of 8 on. Saturday night. We brought our own wine and were given glasses quickly. I ordered a salmon pizza from their specials menu and it was delish! Their crust is perfection; light and crispy with a nice chew on the outer rim. A light schemer of cream cheese topped with arugula, avocado, capers and smoked salmon. I'm going be savoring it for awhile. Second time at Matteo's. Have not liked either time. Will not be back. My wife and I started our meal by sharing a Ceasar salad. Very good, but at $16.00 for some lettuce, cheese and dressing, way too much money. Now this review is not about money. Well maybe it is. It's just that we don't mind spending if we get what we pay for. We just returned from a vacation in San Diego where we spent many hundreds of dollars on food and drink. Every place, from the sidewalk cafe in Del Mar (fantastic) to the high-end steakhouse on the water (wife loved hers, I didn't like mine), to the place on the beach (delicious), we had superb food. If you are so inclined, please read those reviews. Matteo's fits nowhere in that equation. Very high priced for what you get, or don't get in this case. We both had Fettuccini Alfredo. And we both agreed it was the singular worst Alfredo we have ever had. Frozen Michelina's from the market at $1.00 is better. Dry, undercooked, bland. Nothing to it. It was awful, $21.00 per plate. We were with our daughter and granddaughter, so we didn't say anything to spoil the time. Now, to my Kryptonite, service. Our server was awful. She was so busy gabbing with some ladies at another table that she apparently knew, showing them pictures on her phone, laughing away, getting them wine refills continually, as we sat with an empty water flask, dirty salad plates, and no food coming our way. At every restaurant I go to, I joke with my wife that the tip clock starts as we sit down. If service is good, the clock goes up, bad, the clock ticks down. This time it almost clicked to zero. I've been going to Matteo's for a few years now with my girlfriend's family and it has been a tradition of ours to go here every year during special occasions. The service here is always great and the food is delicious. My favorite appetizer is the cheesy bread they have, I could eat two of those by myself. The pasta is always my go to here. Matteo's is a bit more pricey than other places but the service and food is what makes it a great place to dine. Would definitely recommend to others! read more

I was pleasantly surprised that Matteo's wasn't a pizza joint. I had the portobello mushroom burger, another guest had the clam chowder, and the third guest had the turkey sandwich. Everyone thought that their meal was delicious. The New England (white) clam chowder had lots of yummy clams. The turkey sandwich had about a third more turkey than I would have expected. And the sauce on the mushroom burger was delicate and delicious. Since I stay away from pizza joints, this was my first, but will not be the last, time at Matteo's. read more

We began dining at Matteo's more than a decade ago and it was our "go to" neighborhood spot. Unfortunately they just can't get their act together now - Our first hint that they were slipping was pre--Covid when we contacted them to consider them as a venue for our small commitment ceremony. Communication was impossible- phone calls not returned, information requested and never received. I see they are offering this service again - hope they've addressed their issues. Beware! As with other reviewers, we returned post-Covid to find small portions, high prices, and inconsistent service. But we have been willing to compromise for the food, which is usually pretty good, and the outdoor dining. However, our most recent experience has convinced me there are better dining choices in Carmichael and I don't plan to return. Their website offers online reservations, with a selection of inside or patio. Made a patio reservation and arrived on time, empty tables on the patio, but we were led to the worst table inside. I explained that we had made a patio reservation. The hostess couldn't seem to comprehend and kept saying that putting a request in the "notes" online did not guarantee a patio table. I once again explained that their website reservation system gave the choice of inside or patio dining (with no caveats regarding availability) and we chose patio. It was apparent that she had never looked at the website herself, so she had no comprehension of how it actually worked. Had she seemed to care at all, I might have been willing to eat indoors but I no longer felt valued as a patron. A hostess is often the customer's first engagement with staff and sets the tone for the entire establishment. Time for Matteo's to up their customer service. Until we see regularity in positive reviews here on Yelp, sadly we will dine elsewhere. read more

Matteo's is a neighborhood gem. I love the carefully selected wines and expertly prepared food but for me the magic is the vibe. The staff posted this amazing video of their patio last spring and on a whim I decided to meet a friend there and it feels like I never left! I met a member of the staff, Carrie who made me feel like I was the most special guest. Carrie is my go-to for wine recommendations and food suggestions. It is always so nice to come to Matteo's and have her greet me by name. This place is the whole package, I highly recommend dropping in for a meal or a wine flight. read more

We ate at Matteos last night to celebrate our anniversary. While the service was good, food ok, the ambiance was ruined by a dog owner who brought their large dogs( 2) into the outside patio. One of the dogs was allowed to get up , lift his leg, and urinate on the bushes inside the patio, near our table. We were not dining at a dog park! We had chosen a restaurant that felt celebratory; prices somewhat upscale. Ruined by Matteos allowing poorly behaved dogs near the dining tables. We moved to Carmichael 2 years ago - we live in the Condos across from restaurant . We gave this place 4 (YES 4) tries. We are done. We ate in first time and everything was good. Fell in love with the Stu pizza. Second time called in order for pick up. Walked home and pizza was missing the arugula. We are patient. We are kind. We know no one is perfect and we all make mistakes. I got over the missing arugula. It did affect the taste...I must admit. Third time we go to eat in. We are seated by a young lady WHO DID NOT welcome us. She was COLD and unfriendly. When we walked in she was on her cellphone. We are sorry we interrupted her social media browsing. She seats us and says NOTHING. We wait. We wait. We wait. The table next to us are a bunch of jolly regular people. They are chatting with server. We watch said server come and go to that table and chat and chat. 1/2 hour goes by and I say to server "excuse me.....are you are server??...he says YES. I say oh great...we have been here 1/2 hour....can we get a cocktail please? He looks at us with DIGUST like "how do you approach me......I have my VIPs here .....my friends...... I don't know you. So he brings us our drinks. NO SMILE. NO CHATTER. Our food comes. NO FALSE "Enjoy your meal....let me know if you need anything else". NOTHING!!! We felt like outsiders. Like we were on an island with strange inhabitants. Honestly we felt like we were an inconvenience. To think we chose to have our 36th wedding anniversary dinner here...we wanted something low key but close to home and boy were we disappointed. So like I said....we are PATIENT people and we believe there is GOOD in everyone so we STUPIDLY give them ANOTHER chance. I walk over to get my order.......and open the box and peek and say yooo hoo the arugula is there. I leave happy. I get home, ready to eat take a PIECE of PIZZA and the bottom of the pizza is BURNT. Its is BLACK burnt. it was BURNT PIZZA. So bad you couldn't eat it. Happiness was SHORT LIVED! So...... I call (again ) and once again speak to SAME young lady. I tell her my story from the first missing arugula to the now burnt pizza AND tell her I have photos I can send her via email to prove and all she says is "did you need help with anything else"???? It was as if she had an important audience listening to her on the phone and she did not want to indicate "they dropped the ball" There was NO I am so sorry. How can we make it up to you?. NOTHING! I said NO I just wanted you to know of my experience / extreme disappointment. The pizza was not edible. I can bring it back to prove to you...I am across street. SHE HUNG UP on me. Had I been a horrible "Karen" as they call them today, I could have come and caused a scene. But that is not my style. Our world is UGLY right now and I am NOT contributing to the ugliness. Again, we are patient. No one is perfect. When I picked up,.........Had I been told....there was a problem....we are fixing .I would have gladly waited for a re-make. It's sad cause they are across from our condos and we LOVE supporting small businesses and the Stu was the best pizza ever (when it was not burnt). If the food was FREE it would not matter....but last I checked I paid for it and left a tip EACH time regardless of pick up or quality. The food is not cheap. We dont mind mind paying for good food. But we are paying for it and it's not free and the "attitude" of "don't care" is what made us stop supporting them. I did some research and found out the person who owns this place name is Matt. Here is a message / suggestion for Matt "Matt ....you got a problem. You have a good thing going. Train your people on customer service. Even a "pretend / false pretend " I am so sorry for what happened" goes a long way when a customer brings to your attention a problem with food they paid for and gives you so many tries. This a story of a restaurant that tries but fails on too many levels. Ambiance: terrible art on the walls: large amateurish murals of horizontal lines of unpleasant colors, not conducive to dining. Manager or owner sitting at one of the tables in the main dining room with his laptop, etc and a bottle of wine, ignoring the customers around him that he could engage with. Service: inexperienced server who brought the wrong requested wine and had to bring back the wine list to get it right. Then a long wait and she struggled to open the bottle. She brought Parmesan and red pepper flakes but no teaspoon to serve them. Had to ask for salt and pepper as was not on the table. She was young and very pleasant but needs trainin Food: Fettuccini Alfredo was a disaster. Small portion of thin, flavorless Alfredo sauce accompanied the fettuccini. Oily garlic bread served with it was bad. Overall, a failed dish. I shared this with server after a few bites but there was no response from server or management. The uneaten dish sat on our table through the entire dinner. Pizza is very subjective so I will go easy. If you like your pizza doughy and slightly undercooked then you will love Matteo's pizza. I prefer a thin and crispy East coast pizza but my wife loved the flavor and texture of the crust. I would guess there are other dishes that are great but I can only review what I ate and what I experienced. I can't imagine returning to Matteo's. read more

She had her purse and was eating and was inconvenienced with us. She said she relayed the message. When the waitress came over she was confused. Then when I asked for a manager a women who was trying to make a wine sale asks what was wrong. I explained to her the situation. She then asked what did I want..... Love the Asiago Truffle Fries!!!! This place is so great. All eateries owned by this dynamic duo are excellent. I especially love the wine shop next to the restaurant. Recently attended a class and tasting there and hope they have more. We did the tasting and stayed for dinner and more wine. Here is the thing for me they are upscale but oh so welcoming and delicious. Eat in or take out just eat here! I took my son -10 year old- and he loved their pizza. Thought we would try this place again a year later, and still not any better. Here's a picture of the truffle oil that the owners give with the pizza. Totally understand it's expensive, but there is hardly any in this container. The bottoms of our pizza were burnt. There's hardly any calamari in the order. It's less and less food and they increase their prices. I know the world is getting this way, but between that and their customer service which is horrible, I think we have given our last chance to this restaurant. Even the owner doesn't even say hello as you walk in. It's really sad how much they have gone downhill. I've heard that from many other people. So please as much as we like to support local businesses and restaurants, this is the last place you should go to. There are many other family, friendly restaurants where the owners actually care about their customers... and the food is a lot better. Just had to share. Loveliest patio vibes off the Grid! From the outside/front, you'd never know how cute and quaint the back patio really, truly is. A little whimsical, a little garden flavor, and a little back yard patio feeling. Our girlfriend hosted her birthday dinner here. Although the odd spring Sacramento weather reared it's ugly head toward the end of the night, the beginning was perfect. It was a nice day, but it eventually got really cold and windy by the end of the night. Cute little knickknacks and plants/flowers surround the patio and make for great picture taking. Of course we took advantage of that situation. The four of us (two joined later) decided to split the sweet potato fries, garlic bread, a small Cesar, a pepperoni pizza, and the California pizza. I'll list out my thoughts: Sweet Potato Fries - I didn't taste the 'spicy' ketch up, cause I don't do spice and their truffle aioli looked like a disgusting blob of mayo. The actual fries were good, not bad at all. Garlic Bread - This is good too, not amazing, but good. I could have used more garlic, but that's just my preference. Small Cesar - Again, just average. Nothing too good or bad about it. They shouldn't have kept so much of the romaine butt and left it in the salad. The dressing was mediocre, but the portion size was decent for a small. Pepperoni Pizza - I loved it. The sauce was more oily versus acidic. It was good and the pepperoni was perfectly proportioned for the pizza. The California - I liked it after I took off the sun dried tomatoes and the artichoke hearts. We ordered it with them, since half the group liked that stuff. The goat cheese was super good, as was the garlic sauce (versus red sauce) The two that came later shared a bowl of the Bolgonese and they enjoyed it. Wish I could elaborate more, but that's all I got for that dish! The service wasn't bad at all. It was okay. The bus boy or helper, seemed much more attentive than our actual server. I think our server may have had to service the patio and some tables inside, but he wasn't getting the hints when we wanted to order and when we wanted the check. He was very laissez faire, which was maybe our issue since we were cold and wanted to leave. I'd come back for the pizza, it wasn't bad at all. Finally! Heard so many great things about this place and it live up to the hype. Beautiful and clean seating area, inside and outside. Service was spot on, very attentive...I dropped a for fork and didn't think anyone noticed, our waitress immediately brought me another one. The pizza was amazing, great balance of flavors and the crust was perfect. The salad wasn't what ordered and our waitress offered to correct it but I decided to keep it, it was very tasty. THE CINNAMON DONUT HOLES ARE WORTH THE TRIP. OMG... light, fluffy and comes with this amazing raspberry dipping sauce. It was very hard for me to find any faults. But...coffee was over filled. Matteo's has exceptional food every time! It's hard to find a place that has as diverse food items as they do their wine selection and service. My waiter Tim has been lovely the last few times I've come out, very attentive and polite, super sweet and gives incredible suggestions. As a vegetarian, vegan tacos (made well) are hard to come across but this place takes the cake! Tim suggested the seasonal vegan chorizo tacos and I decided to come back a week later for more! Great curbside pick-up tonight! It was so great - all the way around - with one small exception. I had a little glitch with the ordering process - but once we got thru that, all good! We ordered two South of the Border Beyond Burgers - substituted fries instead of salad. That was off the take out menu. Then we had a BBQ Brisket off the nightly special menu. For every $25 in food you spend - you get a $5. bottle of wine - so we qualified for two bottles of wine - and it ain't $5. wine! We picked everything up in 15 minutes - and kept our social distance from others picking up their food and the staff. In and out, back home, washed our hands and feasted on an amazing dinner - I think it was really, really good - but after two weeks of eating in - it probably tasted EVEN better! So support your local business - get on their daily update email - and enjoy the $5. bottles of wine.
