This was the second Mattheessen's location we visited during our week in Key West. The first time was for their amazing PB Fudge Cookie. This time, we came specifically to try their Key lime pie. I realize that food, and especially desserts, can be very personal. Different people and different palates determine what qualifies as "the best." And in Key West, the debate over who makes the best Key lime pie is very real. I don't usually dive headfirst into controversy, but I will this time. As you travel around Key West, you'll hear plenty of strong opinions about what belongs on top of a proper Key lime pie. Some insist that authentic pie must have a meringue topping and dismiss whipped cream as inferior. What often gets overlooked in that debate is the crust. It doesn't matter how tall the meringue is if the crust falls apart. That's why Mattheessen's Key lime pie is my favorite. The filling and the crust are both excellent. The custard is silky and tart, with bright lime flavor, and it sits on a buttery graham cracker crust that's firm enough to hold its shape from first bite to last. It was delicious all the way through. In a town full of strong opinions about Key lime pie, this one earns my vote. read more

You had me at giant cookies and ice cream. Fun, little shop to pop into and get a sugar rush. We tried the giant chocolate chip cookie and a couple scoops of ice cream. The giant cookie was gooey in the middle and large enough to share. Great pick me up after a whole day of walking around. read more

While stopped at port on a cruise we decided to visit Mattheessen's. The giant cookies looked amazinggg and we just had to give them a try!! The place is super cool, with ice cream and the bakery right there. Unfortunately the cookie looked better than it actually tasted. It wasn't bad; it just wasn't "wow" either. This shop has very nice ice cream and cookies as big as hubcaps. I'm only exaggerating a little. The cookies are ridiculously big and looked amazing. However, we only tried the ice cream. The ice cream was very nice. The coffee-flavored one was outstanding. Service was incredibly friendly. They keep late hours which is nice. They have more than one location. We had ice cream and got a giant, and I mean giant, cookie to go. Ice cream was creamy and had great flavor, portions are decent...at $7 a scoop you want a generous scoop. Giant cookie was good but I think you loose a little specialness when you go for size with a cookie. It had good flavor but was a bit dry. There weren't tons of ice cream selections but enough... and they all looked good. There were also lots of other things on the menu like drinks and baked goods. My husband and son ordered a scoop of vanilla on a waffle cone. I ordered a scoop of coffee on a waffle cone. The ice cream was delicious. The cost of each scoop was $7 which I found high. I once read an article in 2022 that said, "...the average cost of a single scoop of ice cream across all states... is $3.87," Athough, I must say, the scoops at Mattheessen's are huge. We stopped here on our way to do some shopping in Key West. I wish I would've gotten the name of the girl who helped us, she was a delight! It's this cute little shop that has homemade JUMBO cookies and homemade ice cream. We tried a few things and all DEVOURED them. From the cookies to the ice cream, trust us, you'll need seconds. Cute little bakery right off the main strip downtown Keywest. You can smell the aroma from the bake goods from outdoors and because of that we were swooned in. They offer fresh pastries, drinks, fudge and cookies. The cookies are so so big. One cookie could be spilt 3 ways in my opinion. They also offer different types of ice cream. I chose to get a classic chocolate chip cookie and it took me 3 days to finish it. I definitely would recommend if you have a sweet tooth you like to cater too! read more

Had a quick visit for an dessert fix. I saw on Yelp that this place was rated well. My husband got a couple scoops in a cup of strawberry on the bottom and raspberry sorbet on top. The portions were quite generous. I saw something I had never seen before. It was a key lime piece of pie dipped in dark chocolate on a stick. I was surprised when I bit in and even got the graham cracker crust. I thought it would just be the key lime custard part. It was so tasty and a little messy to eat. Hold over a bowl or cup should you lose a big piece of wonderful chocolate. The dip was generous as the pieces of chocolate that cracked off had a nice thickness to them. I recommend this unusual local treat in the keys. I had a friend tell me that key lime pie dipped in chocolate was something he had in Key Largo, but I was happy to get it in Key West! read more

Unlike reviews for the other locations how is no one talking about the cookies?! Omg one of the best cookies I've ever had! I got the sugar cookie and it was the size of my head. Crispy on the outside and super gooey on the inside! Easily been added to the "must go to" places list next time I'm here. A day later and I'm still talking about it to my husband. LOL I also tried the Keylime pie. Not as tart as Kermits, but the crust ratio to filling was a little off. The crust was good, but overpowered the pie filling. Overall if you go here, you must get the cookie! Also their gelato looked amazing. read more

Little mom-and-pop housemade ice cream shop THAT IS NOT A BEN & JERRY'S, BASKIN, COLD STONE OR HAÄAGEN-DAZS (hallelujah!!) and located in the central downtown area of KW, a couple blocks walk from Mallory Dock. After a nice dinner (or for a sweet treat pick-me-up any time of the day!), head over and "scoop up" some rich, creamy, delicious goodness (see what I did there?! Lol). We were looking for just a taste of somethin' somethin' after an awesome dinner at Conch Republic nearby (see my review and GO!). We craved ice cream to top off our meal but it had to be close enough to get in and out and allow us to get over to Mallory Dock in time to view the sunset. DING! DING! DING!! The ice cream was delicious - creamy, rich and flavorful. The shop has an impressive selection of ice cream flavors as well as homemade cookies and coffee including Cuban coffee (we were laser-focused on ice cream so I can't speak to their other offerings). So we had went to Kermit's Key Lime Pie place and had a slice and weren't too impressed. We came across this place and thought to try it out. The slices were much larger than Kermit's and their CRUST was amazing! They make the crust out of graham crackers and the pie filling itself is soooo creamy and rich. I gave it 4 stars because the filling was a tad granulated so it seemed like the sugar didn't have a chance to completely mix in. But overall amazing! read more

It's a bit pricier than it's competitors, but the portion is bigger and the key lime pie is smooth, rich, and oh so tangy in the best ways possible! One of our favorite spots for key lime pie! Adorable cookie and ice cream shop in key west! The cookies are freshly baked and they are the size of your FACE. I got the sugar cookie with sprinkles and it was great. They also have chocolate chip cookies and these massive slabs of peanut butter (I think!). The ice cream and sorbet are so tasty. The service is ok, as some have reviewed before. The man at the ice cream counter was nice but the girl making the cookies and running that side of the counter doesn't seem to care what you're saying or what you ask about. She just seemed very disinterested. Cute place and definitely worth a stop. The cookies are like $6 and so is the small scoop ice cream - so expect prices to start there. read more

So disappointed. We went to the one on Duval st and loved it sooo much. We were happy to find one closure to marina we were staying at. But the Service is what killed it for me here. Went here to get ice cream and key lime pie. We had the fried coconut ice cream, cookies and cream and vanilla ice cream, with a chocolate shake and three key lime pie slices to go. The ice cream, shake and the key lime pie were great. Everything was fresh and delicious. Great Lime Pie on a stick with thick coating of chocolate, if that's your thing. It's a great if you're hot.

To start with, despite having 3 locations in Key West, my group did not find the pie to be very good. Dry and no creamy texture. The tasteless "whipped cream" was sprayed on our of a spray can in front of us. Poor presentation. We also found the key lime sherbet to have far too much sugar which made the consistency very sticky. A subpar product is one thing, but the unfortunate issue is the daughter of the owners literally trash talked several of their competitors. While I would expect her to have pride in their offerings, it is very unprofessional to say dramatically negative comments about others trying to make a living as well. Word to the owners - focus on your strengths rather than trying to tear down others. It is a turn off to your customers. read more
