I bought a Living Social coupon for air duct cleaning from Matthew and Sons. Description of Services provided: Air duct cleaning for up to unlimited vents, one main and one return, organic deodorizer, basic dryer vent cleaning, and one basic bathroom fan cleaning. RUN AWAY AND DO NOT BUY! FULL DETAILS BELOW IF YOU HAVE TIME TO READ I bought the deal for my in-laws to have their house's air duct cleaned. My appointment was schedule between 8-10am on Sunday. I arrived at my in-laws at 8:37am it looked like everything had started as I see a huge vacuum outside. I walked in and see my in-law chatting with a John, the Matthew and Sons representative. I introduced myself and shook hands with him. I asked if everything is cleaned he said yes. I chatted with my in-laws and they said not all the vents are cleaned and that they've only been here for 15 minutes. My in-laws opened one of the vents in the living room and I reached my hands in and all I feel is dust and dirt. John, claims that he is a professional, enlighten me and said they only clean the air ducts and I'm touching the vents opening therefore I would feel dirt. I'm not the brightest bulb but doesn't that sound like cleaning the bowl without cleaning the rims?! He said if he brought in 'a brush' it would ruin our vents and I would have to sign a waiver. I assume the company only carries one brush - they are on a budget. Shhhhhh. We 'barked' at each other for the next 5-10 minutes. He questioned why I walked in late and who am I to come in and ask questions. I told him I'm the one that bought the deal; don't you check and ask for customer's name when you walk into someone's house? I didn't realize that the new norm was to just walk-in and start without any sorts of confirmation. I'll spare you all of all the argument details. After my 'barking' he finally walked me through the whole house and showed me how they went about cleaning vents. i.e. walk to your vacuum and unhook the extender and attached the brush head ta-da! That's what they used to clean our vents. He explained to me that because our house is too old therefore, they cannot use brushes to clean our vents. SAY WHAT?! At that point, I was already like; lesson learned I will never purchase anything from Matthew and Sons again. Let's just finished this - whatever they were doing and move on to the next world problem. After he cleaned the main returned - I asked again, what about the deodorizer? He brought in a blue looking vacuum thing and uses the brush head and went over the return for maybe 10-20 seconds. He did not explain what it does or how it works so I can't tell you what that did. He proceeds to say 'Anything else?' AGAIN, SAY WHAT?! Don't you know what you are here for; aren't you supposed to tell me? In case you are curious, he walked out and I received no receipt of completion of service or details or confirmation. BY THE WAY IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING YOU CAN REACH MATTHEW AND SONS OR JUST JOHN BY CALLING 703-239-3009. APPARENTLY HE IS THE ONLY ONE AND HE IS A MANAGER, OR SO HE CLAIMS. I WAS SOL. LIARS!!!! Lack of basic customer service skills. Has too many customers to provide adequate service. DO NOT use a Groupon with these people! I attempted to use my Groupon in February. They didn't come because of the snow. Tried again in April yet I waited at home for a no call no show. They lied and said they called me but I "didn't answer the phone". When I mentioned that I could email my call history to show they didn't call, I got this response: "Well, you know there's the cloud and sometimes numbers get stuck." What kind of ridiculous answer is that? We rescheduled for today (5/5/15). I asked to be their LAST customer of the day and to be called 30 minutes prior to their arrival so that I could get home in time. They scheduled me for the 3 - 6 window and said they'd get there closer to 4:30 which works better for me. The manager calls at 3:02pm to tell me that he's at Family Dollar and his GPS cannot find my location. I asked why he didn't called me at 2:30pm. He replies that he called at 2:00 but I didn't answer. When I mentioned the call history again, he says "sometimes when you go into a restaurant, you don't always get the call." What? I haven't left my desk since noon today. I called their home office to express my frustration. He apparently was on the other line pleading his case. They connect us only for him to tell me that he has customers AFTER me and cannot wait. If I requested and you agreed that I would the LAST customer, how do you have customers "AFTER" me? Next this dude has the nerve to tell me that this is the 3rd time that they've tried to come out and it's costing them money. I reminded him that the first 2 times they didn't show up. He continues babbling on and on about nothing. I was fooled into believing that they would be better than other companies and even had a relative get a Groupon to have several things done at her home. HUGE MISTAKE!!!!! My suggestion is pay the extra money and go with a more reputable company like Michael and Son not their bootlegged version of Matthew and Son. Yes you will pay far more but I'm certain that it will not take 4 months to have your air ducts cleaned. The other benefit is less stress. Terrible customer service. If you're thinking about purchasing a Groupon, I strongly recommend against it. I got one for air duct cleaning and scheduled an appointment 6 weeks from my initial call. They give you a 3-hour window of when they might show up (even the cable companies have a shorter window these days) and I asked to please be at the beginning of the window because of my work schedule. This was the earliest time window of the day by the way. If they had decent customer service, it's a no-brainer to schedule me as the first job of the day so they're not hung up elsewhere. The day before the appointment I called to confirm and again request to be on the early end of the window. Apparently that was far too much to ask with 6 weeks of lead time and a follow-up, as I found myself waiting for more than two hours the day of the appointment. At the 2-hour mark I called and asked if they were coming, because my availablity was running short. Didn't get a straight answer so I cancelled and lost the Groupon. I was told they don't guarantee time slots, and they had made that clear to me, and to be fair that's true. But it's funny that another company was able to accomodate my scheduling without a problem. Cleanliness in the household is important to me now especially since I roommate living with me.  I have tried two other duct cleaning companies before but Matthew & Sons is by far the best.  Will go with them every year! read more

Updated Review 6/21/16 : The manager contacted me about this service (or lack thereof) and managed to make amends by providing an upgraded service at no charge. Although the exchange was lengthy, I find that this contact was a good approach as a remedy to this situation. I will wait to see how the final services are rendered and update as needed. So far, the customer service from the manager has been positive. Stay tuned.... There seems to be a consensus among reviewers that this company tends to do last minute cancellations to their customers. After reading the reviews I was crossing both fingers and toes hoping this would not happen to me. Well guess what? It did. During the 2nd hour of my 3 hour window for powerwashing I received a phone call from a woman who said, and I quote 'the technician locked his keys in the van and won't be able to come to your house'. I was told that they would reach out later that evening or the following day for rescheduling. After calling them the following day, both morning and afternoon, I have yet to receive a response. I even called the number that called me on the day of scheduled service. Overall I like to support local business but this one has left a very bad taste. My husband purchased a Groupon for power washing. We have lived in our home just over four years and had never had it power washed so we were not sure what to expect. Joe and his colleague arrived on time, were professional, and did a great job cleaning the faux balcony, garage, and siding on our house. The job took about a half hour. Note for others who have never had this service: Gutters may not be completely spotless after power washing. I asked about this at time of service. Joe said he was able to remove most but not all. We live well within the range they listed but called to make sure we were in their service area before purchasing the groupon. After they verified we were in their area we bought it and scheduled a time. On the day of the appointment we waited past the time of between 12-3 on a Saturday. They called at 3:15 saying they could not find our house. (We live in a neighborhood and the house is 40 years old, all GPS aps can find it) I advised what street we live off of to help him find the house. Another man called about 30 minutes later and said they couldn't find the house and basically sorry about your luck. He tried to tell me we weren't in the service area anyway and I corrected him saying we were. I even offered to have my husband meet the tech at the grocery store near our house (super easy to find) and he started making excuses. We are currently trying to get our money back through Groupon, but the company had already marked our groupon as used even before our appointment window. Would NOT recommend this company. read more

Don't buy their gutter cleaning service! First off, they use a leaf blower. So instead of depositing the debris neatly into trash bags, they simply blow it onto your windows, roof, siding, air conditioner unit, sidewalk... Second, they don't include downspouts. So if there is any debris there, you still have to get those cleaned. I would have been better off NOT having my gutters cleaned, as I spent the whole morning cleaning up after them. read more

On the other hand, 5 stars to salesmanship, literally 30 min of this man telling me I NEEDED to purchase other services because that's how the groupon works. Mhmmm ok. He seemed upset that I was just sticking to the groupon. Needless to say, I purchased the other services. I had my deck power washed 6/11/2015 by Josh and Jose. They did a remarkable job. My deck went from me thinking I'll need to replace the entire floor to OMG what a difference. I took pictures throughout the process for my records. I was highly impressed with how it turned out so much so that once I showed my friends/family they were asking me did I get a new deck. I wish I could show the photos. Before I would not go on it w/o shoes but now I feel I can dance on it all day long. The guys were very professional and friendly. I purchased a living social voucher for pressure wash for my deck. My deck is just under the 200 square feet that the voucher is good for. I had taken everything off the deck except the gas grill in preparation for the wash. 2 men arrived within the 8-11 am time slot and I showed them the deck. They took out their equipment and started to wash the deck. They were there for less than 15 minutes. They sprayed the dirt from the deck on to my siding and did not clean it off. They did not move the gas grill which is on wheels and just sprayed around it. There was no attempt to clean any marks or stains. I could have done the same job with my garden hose. ****You put your life in danger if you use this company's service! **** I just had HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE experience with this company today! I purchased a groupon which should cover unlimited vents, one main, one return with this company. Today when the guys came, they told me they need to charge additional $45 for one additional return which was fine. But they asked me to sign agreement to pay and then to do the work. I thought they were already in my house, and they would do the job and I signed it anyway although I thought I should sign AFTER service. Since I recently just installed new hardwood floor, when another contractor company did some service in my house, they pulled the heavy machine and tools around without caring my floor and caused a lot of scratches, this time, I specially asked them to be more careful about my floor when I saw they pull in the heavy duty machine into my house. One of the two guys immediately got hot tempered and mad and yelled at me I should not tell him what to do, what not to do, and he knows everything about this job and he will leave immediately since he began to feel uncomfortable when I told him to be careful about the floor. I was more polite and told him to proceed their work. He began to do the work, purposefully showing attitude... When he saw me in the same room he planned to do the work, he told me he didn't feel comfortable if I was around in the same room. I had to go to another room, but walking around, trying to keep an eye on them. Then I immediately saw him trying to clean the air duct vent without opening the air duct cover. I asked him if he need to open the air duct vent cover in order to really clean the air duct. He told me he didn't need to and that's their standard procedure. He told me if he used high pressure machine, the high pressure will blow the dust to the lower floor, regardless if the vent cover opened. He even blowed the high pressure from the machine ON MY FACE suddenly, which really scared me, with a strong gesture of harrassing me, and said, "see? this is how it works! I can't do your work anymore since you asked too much." Since I scheduled this service for long time and scheduled the whole day to wait for these guys to come and don't want to do this again, I told him continue his work without opening the vent cover, but there is one vent which maybe too dirty and I'd like him to open just one vent cover. He said I had to sign an agreement to open one vent cover, and I need to take all responsibility if there is any paint, wall scratch. I said fine and would sign. Then he changed his mind and told me he didn't feel comfortable and he can't do my work no matter what. He quickly got my groupon voucher on the table along with the extra $45 payment agreement and tried to pull the machine to leave. I was really frustrated by his such disturbing and mentally problematic behavior and begged him to do his work without opening one single vent cover. He yelled at me he can't since he didn't feel comfortable. When he pulled his machine away. I asked him to give back my payment papers, he told me he would not, and he asked me he would charge me and I can go ahead to dispute with police, groupon and credit card company. I stood at my door and insisted on the payment papers back, he pulled me and pushed me physically (he is a tall, strong guy, BTW) to clear his way to pull the machine. At the same time, he was screaming and yelling, and cursing, and threatened that he would call police since he claimed I had physical contact with him, which was totally opposite when he physically touched me, harshly pulled me away from the door when I tried to get my papers back. He quickly put machines and tools back on truck without closing my storm door, leaving it wide open and told me he would not do it unless I closed my door from inside. I didn't want to get violence again and surely wanted to close my inside door. Then he immediately fled, leaving my storm door wide open. Got a Groupon for duct cleaning but when the guys came they told me I'd have to pay $300+ more to take care of everything. I live in a 3 bedroom townhouse for point of reference. The guys were polite and thorough, but at the end, they dumped the sludge from all their cleaning onto the grass right in front of the house. People often walk in this area, we have a pretty strict HOA, and I'm sure this stuff isn't good for the environment. Now I have to go and clean up after them. I purchased a groupon to get my air ducts cleaned by this company. The appointment was scheduled between 3 -7pm last Saturday. At approximately 2:40pm, a two man team showed up at my house. I was not home, but my mother in law was in the house at the time. She opened the door to speak with them. But for some reason beyond my understanding, the company did not enter the house to render services. At that particular point and time, I would have expected a phone call from the manager, but I never received a call or a voice message. Around 3:10pm my mother in law called my wife apprising her of what occured. I immediately called the company and asked if they could please return to my residence to render services. The manager refused to return. While speaking with him, he claimed he could not understand my mother in law due to a language barrier. I bought a promotion for duct cleaning through LivingSocial. Scheduling was a quick phone call. They came right on time and started work promptly. My house has two AC systems - one for the first floor and one for the second. They asked us to pick a system to clean - indeed, the promotion states "One Main and One Return". They said they could do the second system for $109. Even though the promotion stated "unlimited vents," they argued that the second floor vents belonged to the second system so they were not part of the "unlimited vents" deal. Not sure if the problem was in how the deal was phrased or how M&S interpreted it, but had they cleaned all the vents, I would have hired them again. I highly recommend Matthew & Sons for air duct cleaning! Scheduling an appointment was easy. Ben arrived within the scheduled time frame and did an excellent job. He was very nice, professional and knowledgeable. He opened up my main unit and explained to me in detail how my system works and what he saw. I had so much dust, mildew/mold build up since the unit had not been cleaned for a while. He did a great job cleaning the main unit along with the closet the unit was in. He then proceeded to open up all of the air vents and dryer vent and thoroughly clean those as well. After Ben was done he also gave me tips on how to maintain the unit properly to help keep everything clean and running efficiently. Job well done! Not sure what to think. My advice is to beware of upselling especially if you purchased a Groupon deal. They will tell you that you need to purchase additional services (unit wash, UV light, an additional main duct cleaning if you have more than one story, etc.). I was here at the house all day and they didn't call until 4:55 and because I didn't answer they did not come. The technician did not leave a voicemail to let me know that it was them. When I call to inquire the guy was very unprofessional and said he was not a psychic and didn't know why they didn't leave a message. Then said since I didn't answer my phone they didn't come. Why wouldn't I be at home when you gave me hours that you were going to be at my house. Now, I had to take leave for this cleaning and now I have to tell my boss I have to take off again in the future to get my vents cleaned. So mad right now.
