As a lover of all things Pizza, I can honestly say that Matthew's was the best Pizza I've ever had in my entire life. After being very skeptical of the outside appearance of the restaurant (reminded me of a NYC pizza joint), I took the plunge and went in to grab a quick bite before heading home from work. Since they didn't sell by the slice, I ordered a regular 10-inch cheese. WOW! From the cheese, to crust- each bite was better than the one before. It had a Chicago deep dish feel with the lightness of a regular pie. The staff was also extremely nice and polite! I will MOST DEFINITELY be back soon! read more

My sister and I ordered delivery from this restaurant in July 2019 and we will NOT be patronizing it ever again. I suggest they revamp their pizza transportation, delivery, and order systems. My sister and I ordered one personal pie each, but she ordered some mozzarella sticks and I ordered the boneless wing apps. Not only did the order take over an hour to get to us, but when it arrived, the order had issues. The delivery did NOT come with an order receipt on the bag the food was transported in, my sister didn't get her mozzarella sticks (we got 2 orders of boneless wings instead), and the pizzas didn't come to us in paper boxes as pizza is usually transported in. Instead, they were transported to us in between two paper plates. I've NEVER seen this before, I was absolutely shocked at this. The icing on the cake was that the pies were barely edible; they had been overcooked and absolutely didn't look like the pies advertised by other patrons of this restaurant. My sister barely touched her pizza and I ate most of mine. Again, I suggest that the owners learn from this and work to improve their food delivery systems. And In Conclusion..... Every once in a while I love a Matthews Pie. If I ate it as much as I'd like to I'd weight 400lbs. In all the experiences I've had here I can't see how anyone could give a review of fewer than 4 stars. Obviously, it might not be the best pizza you ever eaten, but it's different, and usually pretty delicious. You want to eat Matthews Pizza at Matthews. Not because of the ambiance, but because it is the best fresh. If you can't do that, also keep in mind that they sell half baked pies that you can take home and finish baking. Hands down the best pizza I have ever had. I dream about it. Haha. I'm serious. It's so good. My favorite is Anna's stuffed pie- it's basically stacked pizza with meat in the middle. Delish! Also it has appeared on Food Networks Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Worth every second. Can be very busy on the weekends but there is a bar in the basement and you just hang out there until your table is ready or your carry-out order. You wont be disappointed. read more

Matthew's Pizzeria was on Travel Channel "Pizza Paradise". I decided to stop by for lunch while in Baltimore. Arriving early is highly recommended. The restaurant filled up quickly after opening. It's a hole in the wall, so seating is limited. Most pizzas are 8 or 10 inches. I ordered Matthew's famous crab pie pizza (100% backfin crab meat with hand grated mozzarella, reggianito cheeses, caramelized onions, and old bay seasoning). Matthew's crab pie was delicious. It definitely lived up to the television hype (IMO). There wasn't a shortage of crab, which is a plus. The crust had a great crispy texture. All ingredients blended well together. Service was average but polite. Parking can be a hassle (street). Overall, I really enjoyed my pizza at Matthew's. I give Matthew's Pizzeria a 4.5 rating. read more

If you want to skip to the main reason of my one star review, look for the 3 asterisks *** I have been to Matthew's twice. The first time wasn't a horrible experience- pertaining to the atmosphere and the service. The pizza, however, was a poor choice. Or maybe it was a poor pizza? I'm not entirely sure. I had the 4 seasons, which is a pizza pie combined with artichoke hearts, black olives, a salty Italian ham and anchovies. I love all of those ingredients, but WOW. My first bite into it was like my first bite into a salt block. Believe me when I say I love salt...but this was over my head, blood-pressure stimulating, I-might-have-a-heart-attack-right-here,-right-now kind of pizza. Do they make this particular pizza this insanely salty on purpose? Is this the normalcy of the 4 seasons? If so, why is it on the menu?!?! You're killing people! It was so salty, I couldn't even finish the one piece I put on my plate. Such a sad story! Now, for my second trip...I was hoping this place would redeem its quality. We waited on the small steps for about 20 minutes. The waitress said we could go ahead and pre-order so we wouldn't have to wait long for our food once we were seated. Shortly after we ordered, we were seated at a table next to the vintage cola cooler. ***The house salad came out at an impressive speed. Too bad the dressing was lacking flavour and the lettuce was all ends. We watched multiple tables before us and after us get their pizzas, eat, pay, and leave before our pizza came out an HOUR later. At first I had thought they had forgotten us. No...they just suck at baking ONE pizza. What do I mean? Well...when the guy finally came out of the kitchen, he asked us if we still wanted the pizza. Why? Because it was BURNED beyond being edible. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Even though I was ridiculously starving at this point (as it was now going on 10:30 pm), we said NO. I couldn't believe he even came out with it like that! It was blackened/charred beyond even knowing which pizza it was we ordered! What the heck were you thinking?! That's HORRIBLE service. So after another 30 minutes of waiting, we finally get our pizza. 1- Throughout this entire situation, our waitress visited us ONCE and that was to take away the meager salad. 2- The pizza wasn't even that great. There was way, way, way too much cheese on it. 3- The only compensation for our poorly wasted time was that the waitress took the salad off the check. Whoop-dee-doo. It's was $5 and tasteless. Try giving us the pizza for free, as that's what you totally screwed up on. That and the service. Asinine. 4- I will never be going back there. 5- Ever. read more

I love great customer service. I have no problem paying for a great product. Matthews is a subpar product at best. They have zagat ratings and reviews all over the walls but I can't see how they possibly received them. I called to ask for a refund for a $34 pizza order, 2 10" pizzas with 3 toppings a piece "deep dish". The pizzas were personal pan sized at any other restaurant, and hardly deep dished. My roommate walked in with a bag and I thought they gave us bread sticks. The pizza was wrapped in plates instead of a box. $34 and I can't get a box?! The manager asked me to walk back the pizza to get a refund. When I walked in she threw the pizza out, so what's the point of bringing it back? All in all a poor experience with everything from the food to service. Absolutely unreal! read more

So, I've been eating a lot of pizza lately. Not entirely sure why. Perhaps it's my subconscious' way of telling me I should be "Jabba the Hut" for Halloween. Or hell, "Pizza the Hut" for that matter. Not sure if that's what the girls had in mind when they suggested "Star Wars Characters" as this year's group theme. They'll be inside scampering around in Princess Leia loincloths and sluttified Amidala costumes; I'll be sitting outside, propped against a wall, devouring a large pepperoni pizza from Matthews. And I bet you'll erroneously pity the wrong girl. Little did you know, Matthew's pizza trumps boys and free cocktails any night. It is just that good. Keep in mind, we're talking full-on deep dish here. This stuff is serious. One small 8-inch pie could easily feed two, unless you're ravenous, in which case you better get one each. No need for bloodshed over the last slice. I've seen it happen. And by seen it, I mean that I in no way have EVER started a rumble over a piece of pizza pie. Ever. Best sauce, best cheese, best crunchy-yet-moist crust around. This is hands-down the best deep-dish pizza I've ever had. I dated this foodie a while back. She'd have a problem with Matthews because it doesn't have pizza with pesto-encrusted crust and sauce enfused with a red wine-reduction before delicately topping it with mumbo jumbo, but then I'm not dating her anymore. Probably the best pizza in Baltimore! It is a hybrid style of deep dish meets Charm City. You can order it with one, two or three cheeses (mozzarella, parmigiana and ricotta) with the standard array of extra toppings. The pizza sauce is exceptional-- not too tart or sweet. I would also recommend the antipasto salad. For $7 it's big enough for two or three people. The Italian style oil and vinegar with parm dressing is terrific! The Eastern Avenue location across from the old Patterson Theater is probably out of the way for most but worth the trip. They've been making these pizzas here since WWII and they have lasted this long for a reason. Parking can be tough but much easier than at Salt on the other side of the park. Here's a big secret to enjoying Matthew's-- you can order half baked pies for carry out. Pick up a couple with your choice of toppings and freeze them at home. Once thawed, these pies can be baked in your oven at 450 for 8-10 minutes. I also buy extra salad dressing to take home too. On weekends the basement bar is open. Tiny, cramped and low ceiling'd, it will remind you of a favorite local hangout from many years ago. If you enjoy Baltimore's funk and great pizza, this is the place for you. read more

I don't think I've ever experienced a dining establishment with such a significant gulf between the quality of the food and the quality of the service. The good: the pizza. As everyone else has mentioned, the pie is not-quite-Chicago and definitely-not-New York style. The crust is buttery, rich, and filling (sorry veggie bros, but making it with lard is what makes it good in the first place. Also, it's 2010, get over it.) The sauce smacks of "homemade" and adds zest without overpowering the pie. My party got the "Popular" with mozzarella, red sauce, pepperoni and green peppers. The cheese was great, gooey and (probably) not processed. The other toppings were just OK, but didn't drag down the overall experience. And now to the bad: the "service". That is, if you consider being berated service. When we walked in the (apparent) manager asked if we'd been there before- fair question. When we responded in the negative, she informed us that "a large is 10 inches, six slices". She seemed a little perturbed when we asked how big a "small" pie was, but still nothing out of the ordinary. When our waitress came over, she asked us if we'd ever been the before- before I could explain that the manager had already explained, she snapped "a large is 6 slices, 10 inches"- when we ordered a small (which is more than enough for two people weighing in under 3 bills), she responded "it's only 8 inches" and "OK fine" and basically stormed off. Then, to top it all off, a young Latino gentleman walked in to place a takeout order, and the manger (loudly) informed him "if you come to this country, you'd better learn to speak English" and then remarked to the nearest customer "we've got some of them who work for us, don't even bother to learn the language." Overall the service was inattentive and rude (and vaguely racist in an Arizona kind of way), but the food was stellar. My highest recommendation to try the pizza- and get it to go. read more

The first time I tried to eat at Matthews, I wasn't expecting much. Judging by the location and decor I thought this was just another barely edible pizza place in Baltimore. After perusing the menu, I decided upon a large Everything pizza. When the pizza came out, I wasn't really impressed. Especially since it came out on paper plates. What gives? They couldn't afford to buy pizza serving dishes? But then, all of the negativeness vanished after my first bite. Then, it all made sense: the neon lights, retro styling, limited seating area, and paper plates were charming and endearing. The pizza is not typical to either Chicago or New York. The crust is thick, airy, and crispy. The toppings are fresh and delicious. The sauce is sweet and subtle. The cheese is gooey but not overwhelming. Everything works in perfect harmony. The pizza is a little pricey but you get what you pay for and in my opinion, you get your money's worth: A large can comfortably feed 2 maybe 3. The side salad with house dressing is also really good: just a simple salad of greens, tomatoes, croutons, grated Parmesan and oil and vinegar. Great little place to experience some of the charm that makes Baltimore such a great city to live in. read more

Mouth-watering pan pizza that is very close to the Detroit style, with that nice crispy burnt cheese around the rim of the crust. I have to say I was very impressed with my first pie here, and it wasn't my last. Do you like to burn the roof of your mouth? Me neither! But if you go here, it will probably happen because you won't be able to resist taking a bite of that piping hot pie. I prefer pizza with extremely thin crust. At home I toss and work the dough until you can almost see through it. So when I walked into this place and saw what looked like Chicago-style pizza, I almost walked out. That woulda been a mistake. This pizza is fantastic. When we saw Matthews pizza had been in countless reviews either from magazine or online we were convinced we needed to go there. After driving 45 mins up to Baltimore we were pretty restless. The restaurant looks as though it hasn't been updated in 30 years. We were so unclear as if we should go downstairs where it looked barely lit and reeked of sweat. Or if we upstairs where it was too crowded and everyone seemed like they has no idea what they were doing. The waiter took forever to come to us and when he finally did, couldn't give us his undecided attention. The pizza was extremely doughy, soft, and overwhelming. The cheese all sagged toward the middle and created a nice little grease puddle. It was so filling that by the second slice of my 8" pizza I was getting full. So from the service and the food combined I would say that this place needs some work. I really don't know how they got on so many great reviews. read more

Don't go to Matthews if you like "gourmet" pizza with "a unique variety of toppings" and a "trendy atmosphere" cuz you won't get it here. If your idea of pizza night is dropping thirty bucks on a pie at Iggies, this is not your place. If you live and die by NY-style thin crust, don't go here. Do go if you want pizza that's somewhat surprising and definitely addicting. Surprising because it's not quite deep dish, definitely not thin crust. Their crust has that crusty-potatoey-thickness that's crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The "pie surface" itself is without the gooey tomato-ness of a true Chicago deep dish. You could pick it up and eat it or use a knife and fork, whatever suits your fancy. This is a pie where the crust plays a prominent role, but not at all in a bad way. I think what gets addicting is this crunchy-chewy contrast of the crust, and how that plays along with the toppings. Their tomato-basil pie is a nice change from the usual canned-sauce-shredded-cheese routine. Their sauce, if you can believe it, is neither too sweet nor too salty, even with sausage or pepperoni on your pizza. I like to ask for extra sauce, since the actual crust is so substantial. What really got me, though, is their crab pizza. Lump crab meat and old bay.... YES PLEASE. I have them add red sauce to it, I think it's better with sauce than without (which is how they have it on the menu). I've dragged friends there to try the crab pizza and got them all hooked. They have gotten other friends hooked too. Glorious. The size of the pizza may be surprising, it'll seem quite small, but given the deep-ish crust situation, it'll fill you up. I am incapable of discerning the size difference between their small and large, so for a couple extra bucks go for the large and have leftovers. Also, if you get it to go, it won't be in a box, it'll be in a paper bag with the pizza between two plates. Again, don't be alarmed, the flavor and substance will make up for lack of surface area. As for the location.... well folks, it's Eastern Avenue in Highlandtown. It's exactly what you would expect. I recommend the buddy system. read more

I really love Matthew's "Popular" pizza with pepperoni! Their spaghetti and meatballs are also really good for an amazing price! I really love when you can get a lot of bang for your buck and at Matthews you can stay on budget while eating some of my favorite pizza in the U.S.! Matthews pizza is not your average pizza as it does have quite a thick crust with a lot of cheese and I would say an average amount of sauce so if that isn't your thing then this might not be your place but my life motto is the more bread the better hence why I love this place! read more

No question--the pizza here is nothing short of amazing. It tastes like no pizza I've ever had. Probably because there is lard in the crust. Yep--lard. Which I could get over if I weren't a vegetarian. Not to mention Jewish. And, while I do enjoy the occasional slice, I try to eat healthfully and generally avoid things like... lard. It's a sad day, but I don't see myself eating here again unless they start using olive oil or Crisco or something. This is not rumor, BTW--I confirmed it myself with the restaurant this evening after reading the allegation on a few websites. I'm sure I've eaten plenty of hidden animal products in my life, and I've obviously survived. I do my best at restaurants to ask about such things, but honestly--it has never occurred to me to ask if there is rendered pig fat in the pizza. I guess it isn't the restaurant's obligation to disclose every ingredient, but it seems to me if someone makes a point of saying she's vegetarian when she orders, it would be nice if the server clued her in. Just sayin'. Anyway, if this is not an issue for you--consider this a five-star rating. I have loved this pizza for years. That crust is just the right combination of crispy, greasy goodness; the sauce is slightly chunky and tangy, and the cheese is always browned to perfection. I guess I'm just floored that in a barely Southern town where lard is hard to find at the supermarket, it's in the freakin' pizza. So for the record vegans, that cheeseless tomato pie is not even vegetarian. Blech. read more

It's been here since 1943! The traditional tomato pie was perfect. The crust was thick but not doughy. It was surprisingly light and airy, and crispy at the edges. The cheese wasn't your usual mozzarella, but rather a light dusting of grated reggianito (a hard cheese similar to parmesan). The tomato sauce tasted fresh and delicious - not too acidic, not too sweet, just right. My husband liked his sausage tomato pie. Other pizzas on the menu included a crab pie and a vegan original tomato pie. The 8-inch small pizzas were served on paper plates and were very filling. Nice staff. :insert reflective deep sigh here:: This place deserves 5000 stars. I am seriously trying to compose a cohesive sentence to convey how wonderful this experience was. This pizza was...everything. No parmesan cheese, no crushed peppers or oregano needed. It. Was. Bomb. We knew upon coming to Baltimore that we'd go here and we were not disappointed AT ALL. The atmosphere gives you that old school pizza joint feel. It was intimate and we did not feel rushed. We ordered garlic bread and Shelby suggested adding cheese on top with a side of marinara which was an awesome suggestion. We also had crab pizza and my hubster had some sort of spicy shrimp pizza. So good! In addition, I was literally floored by the level of customer service here. Shelby and the other women in the restaurant give Chick-Fil-A and Disney employees a serious run. My drink was never empty and they were beyond friendly. We even hugged upon leaving. We will definitely be back whenever we are in the Baltimore area! read more

No "commercial pizza" hype here - everything is made from scratch and they don't have any dumb gimmicks like cheezy crust. It's straight traditional style pizza made very very well.
