We were able to find a complete living room set: sectional, love-seat and matching table for around $1,700 in total. To my knowledge, this retailer does not offer price matching options if you find it lower at another store. But I don't even think another store would necessarily have the model in-stock that we ultimately decided on. So far, the furniture has held up nice, almost 3 months later. Perhaps we'll return back later on if/when it's time to upgrade our granny suit with new furniture.

The last time we bought our bedroom bed was 30+ years ago. It had a no frills generic King sized mattress, two generic box springs, and a simple interlocking metal frame. That frame had recently started falling apart with increasing frequency, and the process of lifting a king-sized mattress and two box springs from the frame, figuring out how to re-lock the frame, then pile everything back was getting both tedious and tiring. So since that bed dates to the Bill Clinton presidency, we decided it was time to move ahead and get a new one. Beds, especially Kings, can be crazy expensive and hit three grand or more pretty easily. There are lots of mattress quality options, mattress "toppers", and frame and platform options. It can be as complicated as buying a vehicle. So, bearing all this in mind, we checked out two competitive stores yesterday. Connecticut Mattress was our second visit and we purchased our replacement bed there. We ditched the old metal frame for a sturdier platform, eliminating the need for box springs, and we splurged a bit by having the platform "tilt" at the head to make watching TV and reading a bit more comfortable. We went with a "firm" mattress we both test drove and liked. I want to acknowledge how helpful our Sleep Consultant (that's the title on her business card!) Joanne Wholley was. She was super knowledgeable, very patient, and had a great personality. She was the reason we chose Connecticut Mattresss over the competition. Pricing for the bed, platform, delivery, and removal were similar. But Joanne's counterpart at the store that will not be named was pushy to the point of aggressive, and miraculously dropped her quote by $100 as we told her we needed to discuss things and were leaving. So maybe instead of being in Avon, I was in Lourdes and unknowingly made a pilgrimage to The Miracle of the Mattress?

Our dishwasher went to dishwasher heaven, so I called Smarter. The reason I called them is that…read morethey were by far the most helpful appliance dealer that my son & daughter in law dealt with when they tried to replace a built-in fridge. I was looking for a Bosch 500, but they are in short supply, and no one has one including Smarter. Lead times were unacceptable given that the old dishwasher wash in rigor. The salesman suggested a KitchenAid, and knew exactly how much vertical clearance I needed without having to look it up. I asked when they could install it. There was a blizzard coming, so I had to wait until the storm passed, but they put me first on the schedule for that Monday. Not only was the salesman very helpful, but he extended me a price match to the big box stores price without my asking. The installer called 2 days before installation to confirm the installation, then called the day of delivery to confirm the install time. Installation was quick and professional, and although they didn't bring 6 pall bearers for the old dishwasher, they gave it a dignified exit and trip to the ever after. Why would you buy from a big box, when you can work with these guys for the same price? The new dishwasher works great!

Today we were told we needed a new electrical outlet to run the freezer and not use an extension cord. You would think this would be pointed out when they installed the freezer. Now we are experiencing another charge. They seemed eager to sell and take you money, but after that you are on your own. I would not recommend them at all.

So much so that when I knew I would be moving into a new home in a retirement community west of Boston, I knew it was time to buy two nightstands to go with the bed. The Memorial Day Sale mailing made it happen. Fast forward to move-in date here where I discovered to my dismay that the wall for the bed wasn't wide enough to accommodate the new, as yet undelivered, nightstands! Scrambling th the help of my niece, I found two others on their website that would work. But would Pompanoosuc Mills honor an exchange of two custom made nightstands for these different ones? They would! Understandably they voiced a wish I'd realized this sooner--as did I, of course. The new nightstands won't be delivered until the first of the new year. But that is a very small price to pay for being able to deal with a company that has truly bent over backwards to keep a customer happy. Beautiful furniture made by a beautiful company staffed by beautiful people! So looking forward to getting the new nightstands and so thankful for all at Pompanoosuc Mills.
