Edna and Maria Luisa did such a beautiful job getting my hair light enough to be able to go ginger copper color! not only that but Edna then styled my hair so beautiful! I've been in Chula since 2017 and always been on a lookout for a good salon since we're far from the usual salon I always go to. I've always contemplated trying out this place but for some reason could not find the time until finally I went ahead and gave them a call. Setting up an appointment was fast, and I was booked with Alex. The day of the appointment, Alex was just finishing up with his client and they actually greeted me when I arrived if i'm there for an appointment, etc. I'm not complicated with haircuts since my hair had grown too long I told Alex I need it cut shoulder length but still enough to do a ponytail and layered, and he delivered. read more

This is the worst experience I ever had in the hair salon. The welcome was nice but the stylist was awful. She didn't want to take me in while I was sitting and waiting for more than 30 minutes. Still she standing and keep chatting with her customers, there is no complaint about that because I had no appointment. After took me to the chair she had the worst attitude ever like I had no money to pay her. My asking is my hair touched up BROWN not too red, she turned it into black and washed my hair by pouring water into my ear and throwing a towel in to my face because I said I get wet. Went to this place in a pinch (my usual hair stylist, who is great with cuts, really dropped the ball with bleaching). I had bleached my under layer including bangs and it came out so uneven and my bangs were yellow. I called Matty's in the morning to ask if someone who works with bleach is available for an appointment, and was given a time when the stylist would come in. Nelly called me an hour before that time to let me know she was available if I wanted to come in, so I did. The shop was clean and thank goodness not packed. Nelly was so accommodating and sweet asking about what I wanted and how it got to that point. We had great conversation, not forced like sometimes when I feel pressured into talking. It was a nice relaxed environment and she explained everything she was doing and fixed my roots too. She really put in the care and helped me get to a more platinum blonde from my yellow hair. My hair looked so much better after she helped me out. Highly recommend, especially Nelly and especially calling in the morning first to ask for a specialist in what you need. Thanks! read more

My last review was from 2013. So I've been going to this salon on and off for almost 5 years now. I say "on and off" because every time I find someone I like, they end up moving to another salon some time later. So I would try some other place....then eventuually come back to Matty's because of convenience and affordability. Today, I came back after trying two other salons that did not make me happy. I had a haircut (I can't remember the name of the stylist...might be Lorena) and had makeup done (by Magda). The result? I received compliments about my hair and makeup!:) Magda was very unfriendly but she was efficient and good! So I don't mind at all. I actually hate stylists who try to do small talk. I prefer these two ladies who were on the more "leave you alone" side. The stylist also followed what I wanted and gave advice if I was asking for something that would make the cut look bad. I will be back here again! Hopefully, these two ladies won't leave:) read more

With all the great reviews I decided to give this place a try. I was in need of a great haircut and style. However, it was incredibly disappointing. I arrive at my appointment and was seen right away. Only good point. Hence the one star. The stylist starts to cut my hair right away. For a $35 haircut I expect at least a shampoo. No, she cut it dry AND blew dry it dry! Terrible. During the cut the stylist maybe said two words. No personality. The entire time she made me feel like I was a huge inconvenience. During the cut, she yanked out my earring and poked me in the eye with her comb. She never said a thing not even "oh sorry". I don't have a tender scalp but the way she yanked my hair was not fun. She never introduced herself but the name on the license said Magdalena. I was looking forward to a great experience but it was a nightmare. Sorry I won't be back. read more

Posting on behalf of my mother, who does not want to create a Yelp account for a single review - yeah, she was that angry. -- I stopped in at 3:10pm on February 2nd for a wash/blowdry to give my hair some style. I'd had my short hair permed and cut here just three weeks before, and the stylist assured me that it should not collapse in just 3 weeks - that if it does, it's because the person didn't know how to perm it or overused the solution. The curl was still in, but I was just hoping that they could style it with some shape and bounce. From the beginning I had a bad impression of the stylist. The receptionist had told me that a shampoo was $5, and with a blowdry it would be $20. The stylist sauntered up with an expression of extreme boredom and annoyance that she had to be working, didn't even introduce herself, and asked what I wanted. I told her that I'd gotten it permed here three weeks before and just wanted it styled for some shape. She immediately tells me, "That's a long time ago" and rolls her eyes. The shampoo took less than 2 minutes. I was shocked because I felt her get my hair wet but never actually worked the shampoo into my hair, and I got up feeling like I still had a dirty scalp. She then proceeded to dry my hair and work in some gel. It should have been obvious from my expression that I was dissatisfied - my hair stuck out all directions like wild grass and looked crunchy and worse than when I'd come in, but she was reluctant to do any more. So I got up, wrote in a tip automatically, and left. It wasn't until I looked at the time in the car that I realised it was only 3:25pm - the whole experience took ONLY 15 MINUTES, including a trip I took to the restroom when I first got there. The more I thought about it, the angrier I was with myself - what kind of idiot doesn't know how to shampoo their own hair. $20 is not really such a small amount of money that I'm happy to throw it away on a shoddy job, especially when I for $25, I could have had it cut as well, which takes more time and precision. I called back the next day to ask the name of that stylist - she was wearing a black skirt - and was told either by the owner or manager that it was Luz. I don't know if that's the case, but regardless, Matty's Salon should be ashamed that someone like this is working there! read more

I have been going to Mattys hair salon since I was in high school. I've got my hair done with Aaron a couple times. I've always like the results but for some reason this time I was not happy at all, I was disappointed with the result. I wanted my hair burgundy purple. He bleached my hair and washed the purple color into my hair which I thought was odd because normally they would brush it in your hair. By the time he was done he blowdried and straightened my hair. Never once did he ask if I wanted to see the back of my hair which I thought that was odd also because that is a custom when you go to a salon. So when I got home my husband checked my hair and I had blotches of bleach colored hair in the middle and back of my hair. It would have been fine if he had told me to come back the next Day but he ignored the fact of what my hair looked like and it's not like it's not noticeable And to top it off he charge me $125 for the service Plus the tip. I trusted him, so I never would of questioned him. I don't know if he was in a rush to get home or had something to do. But it's never ok to pay that much and receive that hair quality! read more

$100 for simple trim and one color. Before I made the apt., I called to ask for pricing. They specifically quoted me half of what I was actually charged. Salon interior needs a major update. Overall experience could justify the price point. Also, had an appointment for an eyebrow wax. When I arrived, they told me the gal was on vacation. Wish I was told that before so I could have made other arrangements. My stylist was stressed because she was juggling two other clients at the same time, and I felt that she didn't have the time to attend to me, it was a rush job, and a rush experience. I called in to make an appointment for a simple bang trim one day and was told on the phone that an appointment was not neccessary and to come in at a certain time. Well, I did this and when I get there it seems they are booked up with appointments! I was told to wait until someone else became available... after 30 minutes of waiting, being ignored, and watching some guy off the street walk in and be seen right away, I walked out. I would avoid this place. All of the women and stylists looked beyond ratty, save one stylist chick who looked way out of place working here. Put in the extra time and don't get your hair done in a strip mall. Real salons don't cost all that much more, and you'll get far better service! read more

Have gotten my haircut here for 2 years, every 2 weeks. Carmen cuts my hair and not only does she do a great job, she is one of the most caring and personable people you will meet! The owners of the salon are true small business owners who care about their customers and running a business how it should be run. The only warning, from what I hear, Carmen is one of the BEST for women's coloring and cuts and highlights.... BUT her clients know that and she is usually booked a month or two out. Came here on a referral by a friend. I wanted an affordable but nice cut. Appointment was for 2:30pm. I had called and said I was a little lost trying to find the place and would maybe be a minute or so late but they told me it was fine. Still got there right on time - wasn't late after all .... then after I checked in, I had to wait 15 minutes before the stylist even saw me! She took a break at 2:30pm! I'm pretty sure that they shouldn't schedule an appointment at 2:30pm if the stylist is going to take a break. I would give them only one star but the stylist was nice and did a nice job.
