It was a Sunday, the day of the sabbath. On this particular day, our house of worship was this delightful, eloquent and quaint cow colored establishment nestled between a CVS and an auto insurance agency. The weather was warm as the sun and clouds jockeyed for position. The scent of raindrops lingered in the June air as we awaited the invitation to dine from the maître d. As we awaited our beckoning, we were enthralled with the acoustic serenades of an old timer strumming his six string that he presumably bought back in the summer of '69. Although, a wager of an hour wait was negotiated, we were pleasantly surprised when we were called after only a 20 short minutes. We felt honored, chosen to bequeathed the opportunity to eat. We were king and queen among peasants as we strutted in to the castle of brunch. Once seated, we perused a rather extensive menu catering to many a types of pallets. In the background, the melodic and rhythmic sound of water droplets echoed through the establishment as it fell from an ac unit and onto the heads of unsuspecting guests. Depending on your hygiene bar of acceptability and the temperature, a cool droplet of AC exhaust water atop your head may be somewhat inviting. The service was immediate, some would say rushed... as the hostess ran over to our table and hastily took our drink order. She proceeded to ask us if we wanted coffee 127 more times throughout our meal. It's presumed she either owned stock in the Columbia coffee manufacturer or was carrying on an affair with the coffee delivery driver, Pedro. During the meal, I felt like Drew Barrymore on the airplane in The Wedding Singer. Without fail, EVERY PERSON that walked by slammed my elbows with the force of a thousand airline drink carts. In conclusion, the food here is so good, one gentleman had a seizure after tasting the cinnamon French toast with banana and pecans. It's not clear whether the gallon of coffee that was siphoned down his throat played a role in said seizures. Investigations are ongoing. Paramedics were also called in for unrelated incident for a young woman in the bathroom OD'ing on boysenberry syrup, which has become an epidemic in median and high income areas, when brunch is occurring. The use of narcan had to be administered to revive her from her sugar high. read more

Walking into this storied establishment after 18 long years, a wave of nostalgia hit me. Add to this the eye of an experienced chef--my husband--and our visit evolves into a culinary critique. The aroma in the room, rich and inviting, harkened back to fond memories while stoking our appetites. The staff didn't skip a beat, delivering impeccable and friendly service from the get-go. This is just an update because I went back home to this place. I've had quite a few breakfasts, and nothing even comes CLOSE to Maureen's! This time, I went with Apple Cinnamon Pancakes which were of course, amazing. I ordered the Oatmeal again this time and it was way better this time around. The first time I tried it, I ate it dry and it was more of a soft granola. But, they give you milk with it for a reason. Ooooooh boy, was it heavenly. And speaking of heavenly. If you ever see that there is Cannoli Stuffed French Toast on the specials, you order it RIGHT AWAY DAMNIT! I'm not a big fan of cannoli's and I always catch a lot of crap for it. But, this may have been one of the greatest breakfast items I've ever eaten. Maureen's Kitchen did it again!!! I had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners Kevin a week ago. We had a heart felt, and genuine conversation. I advised Kevin how much my fiancée loved their lemon poppy ricotta pancakes. Kevin's response was come next week, they will be on the menu for you. unbeknownst to us all, I had a death in the family that week. I could not think of anything better than to bring my family members who were hit the hardest to Maureen's Kitchen to get some pancakes, and laughter. What a success! Kevin made sure to to tell the staff to have a table for me, so I didn't have to wait. The pancakes were amazing to say the least! I know this place is a staple in that community, and I have eaten here twice. Once for lunch, once for breakfast. I must say the food is good, it is homemade and fresh. The wait staff seems rushed and frantic becasue of the business I guess...but it made me feel anxious, not relaxed. I am a breakfast lover and the pancakes were good, not great but good. I have had better and I tend to be a french toast fan but for some reason they didn't have them that day. Odd. Lunch was chicken salad w/ a side of potato salad which I thought was better then the main meal. Mmmm. The line to get in was not worth the wait. I feel that with all those ppl waiting upwards of an hour sometimes, just fell a little flat for the hype. It was good but not WOW. If you come early enough you will get a seat and maybe not have t wait. I am not a "waiter " so I sit at the counter and the service there is exceptional. This family run establishment has been around forever I thought I remembered it from across the street before they built Avalon and I was right.. It was a small shack with delicious and tasty food... at a reasonable price. I had their specialty pancakes today, butter and sugar free syrup on the side. I ordered a tall glass of OJ and I was delighted. We got here at 8:01 am on a rainy Sunday morning, and it was already almost full! That'll give you an idea of how popular this place is. My wife had nutella-stuffed croissant french toast with bananas and walnuts. Bacon on the side. Out of this world! I had pistachio pancakes -- I was expecting just a hint of pistachio, but was pleasantly surprised that they had a bold flavor. The coffee was very strong and a little muddy -- just the way I like it! This was a great, very satisfying meal. Our server Jerry was excellent. The cow decor is fun! I really love this place. They always have ridiculous and wonderful specials. Lunch is amazing, too! I love their lobster rolls! The only way they could be even better was if htey had waffles, but I'm just being picking- try an Egg McMoe cuz your mouth will thank you. It's usually really busy though, so you have to come at an off time or expect to wait. The not taking credit card thing also usually throws people for a loop when I bring them there, but the food more than makes up for it. I just don't understand the hype about Maureen's. The food is fine...nothing special...and definitely not worth waiting an hour for. It could be so much better if they actually made things from scratch. I'm not 100% positive but I believe their pancakes, waffles, etc all come from a bought mix as do all of their baked goods. Their "home made" corned beef hash is canned hash that they mix a little sauteed onions and peppers into. I have loved this place ever since I was a kid! This is the one place I always root for in my town of Smithtown. Whenever a tourist or outsider comes to visit, I am always taking them to this place for the best breakfast you can ask for! Sometimes the waits are very long, especially on the weekends, but it is worth the wait 100%. I absolutely recommend anyone who is in Suffolk County or Long Island to come by to this place. If you go on a weekend morning after 9 am you will probably have to wait about an hour to get seated and another 15 to 20 minutes to get your food. For me personally it just wasn't worth the wait and I have no real interest in ever going back again! This is one of my favorite eateries on Long Island. Most of the staff is exceptional (last time I went we did not have the nicest server), the ambiance is adorably fantastic. The food is top notch. This is place has been a Smithtown icon for many years and the food is always very good but unfortunately the wait time and high prices make it unappealing. I liked it better when they had the small roadside cafe back in the 80s, the food was always good and very reasonable. Not worth it anymore , better options in the area spend my $$$$. read more

One of our favorites!!! Maureen's potato salad is awesome, and the sandwiches are unparalleled. The one deterrent is the wait, which can often be hours long.
