I started coming here when I lived in the area, and I always enjoy coming back when I'm visiting family. This is actually one of the few places that I actually felt improved in recent years which is the opposite of what you usually tend to see over time. One big plus is that their hours are longer and they are open for more days than they used to be (they used to be closed 2-3 days of the week for reference). If there is a downside compared to older years, I'd say the service has declined slightly and staff can be a little unattentive at times, but still wouldn't say that it's bad. Good amount of seating both indoors and outdoors. They will always bring you a basket of chips and salsa to start with. And unlike most other places, they are actually GOOD quality and they give you a sizeable portion to start so you're not constantly asking for chip refills. And they have no issues giving those to you as well. Menu is on the smaller side, but you can't go wrong with one of their tacos. Tried a few and have yet to have a bad experience. A few years back I occasionally had some issues with the tacos being burnt but haven't this happen again in recent visits. One thing I also really like is the rice and beans they give you with the tacos. While that may be a standard for any mexican joint, the rice has a bit of cheese mixed into it and is done very well. Perfect to add into any taco or enjoy on its own. The drinks are pretty on-point as well. Although the tacos may not look that big on initial glance they will definitely fill you up especially if you opt for their sour cream and guac, which were both done very well. Overall, this is probably my favorite spot for Mexican in the area, and I'll keep coming back every time I visit GA. read more

I was super excited to try this place but heavily disappointed in the experience. The service was absolutely terrible! This is supposed to be a sit down restaurant and we had to approach the counter 3 different times to ask for water, a dipping sauce that was supposed to come with the tacos and then finally boxes and our check. The beans arrived cold, the rice was flavorless and the queso was drowning in grease! The chips and salsa were good and so were the avocado tacos but definitely not worth the price. Waiter never asked "how are things/do you need anything else?" And would not voluntarily come to the table. The place wasn't even busy so no excuse there. The place was really nice and clean, and the tacos I ordered were portioned very nicely. Considering they were $16 for 3 i would say it about evened out with the price. Sadly the flavor wasn't there at all, it was rather bland, the rice had a VERY heavy lemon taste and the street corn that was $7 was also a let down, for $7 the corn was very disappointing with its size, and taste. Service was pretty good but they can definitely make some improvements with the food! Ive lived in Southern California for 4 years so I expected the food to be bright and vibrant but it wasn't. Mavericks is a fun and lively California Mexican spot that is always packed on weekends. The free salsa is solid, and I like that the chips are thinner than at your typical Tex-Mex spot. They also have a spicy green salsa that is worth asking for. The menu is not huge, but I've tried the tacos and enchiladas, and prefer the enchiladas. I typically order the chicken ones. The tacos are solid, but I've had better at authentic Mexican spots. The drink menu is extensive, with a nice variety of margaritas and other liquor drinks. Why haven't I been here before? My girlfriend chose this place to meet my boyfriend and I for dinner last minute. I had never heard of it, but I saw all the good reviews on Yelp, so we headed over there over the weekend. I have to say this place is tucked away in a plaza, and easy to miss. I'm in this area all the time, and never even noticed it. Well, hello there! Mavericks has certainly caught my attention now. I have literally never seen my boyfriend tear up chips and salsa until now. He's so health conscious, but wow...he was literally throwing them down. The salsa was terrific and super fresh, home made every day there. We all loved it. I loved the chips because they weren't greasy and they were nice and thin with a touch of salt. Delish! My friend ordered the shrimp quesadilla, I got the chicken tacos, and my boyfriend got the brisket tacos. We also got a side of the sweet potato fries with chipotle cream and cotija cheese. I do prefer my fries crispy, but the overall taste of the fries was good. We were both so happy to even see sweet potatoes on the menu. We all liked our food. The waitress was awesome! I also like that they put a pitcher of water on the table, because the glasses are small. All in all, a great experience, and we sat on their outdoor patio which was nice for ambiance. First thing, the value was incredible. For what I paid, I got a lot of food and drinks and everything was very flavorful. Everything I tasted, I was pleasantly surprised and wanted more. Drinks (hot & skinny and ginger margs) were strong and the flavors were spot on. Jack queso fundido was loaded with veggies and there were no qualms when we asked to add black beans. Fajita platter was massive and flavorful, though I'd recommend a smaller, deeper skillet to keep everything in the marinade. The chips were really light and crisp and delicate. Salsa was flavorful and felt like it was made in house. The service was a bit of a struggle. It seems like it's a family run business, so I'm going to cut them some slack and make some suggestions. Small plates, flatware need to go to the table along with the menus or keep them ready on the tables. Don't assume kids don't need plates and flatware and cups with lids. It makes you look cheap and it's literally the worst thing for parents as children will just dig their fingers into the salsa, ruining it for the table, spill water or other drinks everywhere because the giant plastic cups from 1990s Pizza Hut are still lidless. overall I have every intention of returning. Staff was incredibly nice and accommodating if a bit visibly overwhelmed. I thought maybe the place had only been open for a few months or even weeks but no, "2 years" said the waiter. Almost didn't go because Yelp posted closed but Google posted open. Decided to check it out and glad to find it open! Chips and salsa were so good. Not hot but full of flavor. I got the Mavericks Taco Salad. The chicken was okay if you wanted more savory meat but overall the salad was amazing! I would order again. My husband ordered San Felipe Vegetable Enchiladas. For my first time coming here I really enjoyed the food and experience!! I am giving it 4 stars because there are probably other places I would think to go before here. We came on a Saturday night around 7pm and were able to be seated right away for just 3 of us. I could see how this place could get busy though because it isn't the biggest in the inside. The menu isn't the biggest but they do have a good choice of options. Lots of different tacos and other entrees to choose from. I ordered the chicken quesadilla which was massive and delicious. I also got the skinny margarita which was also great. I loved that they bright chips and salsa as well to the table to start. That is always a plus at a restaurant. I have been a long time customer (8+ years), but have definitely noticed a sharp decline in service and food quality that seems to align to a recent change in ownership (I noticed a totally different group of people working there than the previous employees, so I'm guessing there was an ownership change). I've been ordering the Shrimp Fresca Bowl every visit for probably the past 5 years or so. On my last visit, the once-tasty sauce on the shrimp was replaced by what was basically just straight hot sauce. I really enjoy spicy food, but this was so hot that it rendered the shrimp inedible. The service was basically nonexistent - the server acted like us being there was an inconvenience. Eventually a gentleman who appeared to be the manager took over servicing our table, and he was fine. I normally eat here once ever month or 2 with friends, and I will give them another chance, but if I have another negative experience I will suggest to my friend group that we find a new place to get together instead. read more

I didn't see a lunch menu for them, so I don't know if they have one. What they gave us didn't seem like a lunch menu or say that it was one. Normally, I would ask for the lunch menu and I don't know why I didn't. Anyway, I ordered the Pineapple Habanero Mahi Mahi tacos. These were not bad. Definitely had a spicy kick. The pineapple habanero salsa may have overtaken the mild flavor of the mahi mahi, but I enjoyed it. You get three tacos for $15. They were accompanied by a nice lime flavored rice and black beans. Don't expect large quantities of these sides. My friend ordered a chicken salad which looked standard and nothing special. We also ordered an order of sweet potato fries ($6). Those were okay. We sat on the patio and the flies were out of control and did impact the lunch. When I've eaten on patios a thousand times before, flies haven't been a problem, so I'm not sure what was going on there. They do need to have some kind of repellent though. The inside seemed open and cute. I didn't look hard because I was in a rush to get outdoors. The service was absolutely fine. Lunch will be a little more expensive than a standard lunch at countless other restaurants, but it's an okay spot for getting a bite to eat if you are in the neighborhood. read more

I've been wanting to try this place and finally got a chance. Two of us went, I got the shrimp fajitas and they ordered the pineapple habanero mahi mahi tacos. As soon as the food came out, we regretted ordering the tacos. The fajita platter is huge, easily enough for you two us and probably some leftovers. So we tried to finish the tacos as they won't be good to go. I wasn't a big fan. I'm more a fan of deep fried fish tacos, the flavor and texture just wasn't there. The fajitas were awesome though. Service is inattentive and slow. Wait staff is hanging out at the bar area (no customers at the bar) while diners are alone in the dining room. Long wait to receive water and chips. Longer wait for someone to take our order. Even longer wait for food to arrive. Had to go up front and ask for the waitstaff to check on the food order and refill drinks. Food was warm not hot. Very disappointing. We met the original owners the first week they opened and were regulars every week until we moved our office. At 12:30pm there were only 3 tables occupied. Busy Friday lunch crowd, but we never wanted for refills, or fresh chips/salsa. Much appreciated. Tacos were superb. Of particular note we're the Santa Maria tri-tip tacos--so good! We're from Central Coast, the birthplace of tri-tip, and Mavericks has the flavors down. Chips were homemade, and perfectly light and crisp; salsa was excellent and just the right amount of spice. I ordered a veggie salad w chicken. The mix was good. Except for the chicken. It was not made to order. It had been cooked previously and reheated at least three times. It was not juicy or condimented. It was dry and shiny. Chicken Jerky is what I got. Not returning. Sad that there were not a lot of people when we got there and they should have cooked all to order. Potentially one of the worst meals I've ever eaten. This place used to be decent. So, I wonder if it has recently changed ownership. First, we ordered cheese dip. My daughter noticed that they microwaved the cheese before serving it to us. It was pretty bad. Then, we tried to order food for our kids. Note that the kids menu no longer exists. Mavericks Cantina serves excellent food to Johns Creek. I initially wanted to call this place Tex-Mex, but it's more accurately Cal-Mex (yeah... I have no doubt nobody else has ever said that). My go-to order is the Santa Maria Style Tri-Tip Tacos: Santa Maria dry rub Tri-Tip Steak, Roasted Poblano Cream, Pickled Poblanos, Onions and Cilantro. You get three tacos per order, rice and beans, and a truly incredible amount of chips and salsa. How incredible? Better than Moe's would give you in the old days before they started cutting back on chips to lower food costs incredible. I've loved every meal that I've gotten from Mavericks. I wish the hours fit a little better with my schedule. That said, I certainly understand. I also encourage all diners to be patient. A lot of nights they seem to have two front of house staff handling the dining room and bar, a job that probably should be done by 4+ to ensure optimal levels of service. So, if they're on a wait, and you see an empty table, trust that they are also aware that there's an empty table. I love Mavericks Cantina and all JC residents and beyond should give it a try. read more

My brother lives in the area and bragged about this place for quite some time. I brought my nieces and nephew here to be the "cool uncle" and they showed me the ropes. I hear the owners are from southern CA so they know mexican food. The experience started with extremely friendly staff who sat us quickly. They provided complimentary chips and delicious salsa. The menu was quite extensive with plenty of authentic mexican options with some of their own "American flairs". We got fried chicken tacos and I was pleasantly surprised. The tacos came in threes and were delicious (not your typical "Tex-mex"). They continued to provide great service even after their 9:30 closing time. Wow. Sad to see this restaurant was sold and the lower quality was immediate as soon as you walk in the door and sit down. Menus and table placards were dirty. Not a good sign. Chips were stale and salsa tasted off. We decided to tuck tail and run without ordering food and just got a couple of drinks. The drinks were too tart and more filler than alcohol. Mavericks is trendy little Tex/Mex restaurant in the Johns Creek area. It's been here for sometime and is popular with the people in the area. Modern/simple interior when it comes to decor. Seating arrangements are spread out and they could fit a decent crowd if they wanted to. You have options based on the time of the day you go. Lunch menu feels smaller in terms of what you can select but they do offer some variety. Tacos, rancheros, salads, enchiladas, desserts, and drinks to name a few. Chips and salsa come with the meal, you can order guac or queso too. Everything from service and how the food tasted was good. Not much to complain about really. read more

We've been coming here for a long time and it used to be our favorite. So disappointed to see how the food and service have declined under the new ownership. We recently had dinner there and you could tell that our food was not fresh and looked reheated. Even the chips tasted off. Unfortunately three of the four of us came home and found ourselves sick to our stomach afterward (the one of us the felt fine unironically did not order anything other than a soda). I waited to find a really special place to post my #100 review, and I've found it: Mavericks!!! This place is so amazing: from the food, ambiance, overall experience....everything way exceeds expectations. When I told my kids I wanted to try a new Mexican restaurant, they thought we were going to a "dive" Mexican place (not hatin, cause there are some great ones).....but this place was soo much more. From the time we walked in we were impressed. The interior is VERY upscale and trendy - it feels like a cool bistro, not a Mexican restaurant. We were seated quickly and the server brought out the obligatory chips & salsa: their's were spectacular. The chips were thin (which I really like), and the salsa was so much more flavorful and complex than the standard salsa. You could taste the flavor profiles from the lime and other flavors....sooo good!! Now for the tacos....Maverick's are much more elevated than other local Mexican places. The steak was marinated and was absolutely delicious. The Al Pastor was perfect. Even their cheeseburger taco was quite good!! The owners are from S. California and bring that flair to the food and overall experience. We will DEFINITELY be back, and I can't wait to try the other food & drinks on the menu!! read more
