When I bottomed out my Honda and was suddenly dragging my exhaust on the ground, I searched for the nearest open shop around me that was open that day, and it just happened to be Mavis Tire in Latham... And it's a good thing it was. I pulled in around 1:15PM on a Sunday afternoon, with no appointment or even a prior phone call, to an absolutely full shop. There was not a single empty space in front of the building to park, so I assumed there was not a chance they would be able to help me that day... When they then told me that their parts supplier closed at 2 (on Sundays), I was sure I was out of luck, but they immediately jumped into action, ordered my parts, and started working on my car. I was on my way home, in a perfectly repaired vehicle by around 2:30PM, and at a MUCH lower price then I ever expected. Simply a perfect experience in every way, and I just could not be more satisfied. Everyone was polite, friendly, and helpful, and they made ZERO attempt to up-sell me or replace anything more then exactly what I needed to be on my way. I was there this week and purchased 4 tires for my car. It's a normal purchase but here it is. their mechanic damaged all 4 wheels as well as both side skirts. they don't use rubber socket so it will damage the wheels, their tire machine seems out-dated so it damages the wheels. Mechanics are not careful with wheels or car so they will damage both side skirts by their left and damage wheels because of handling issue. I recommend no one should go and have Mavis repair, replace, and anything to your cars. By the way, insurance estimate was around $2,000 - $2,400. now you know what I'm suggesting. read more

Went here for an inspection was told an hour. Claimed the inspection itself will take 45 minutes. I leave the car and go across the street to eat for over 40 minutes come back and the car still hasn't even been brought in. Purchased a set of 4 tires for a total price, balanced and installed, of $499. Then they tell me the final price is $582 because of taxes and fees. (There is a sales tax rate of 8% plus a $10 Encon waste fee for 4 tires, so my final bill should be $548.92.). I say incorrect, he then quotes me $567. I say incorrect again, he then quotes me $558. I then provide an elementary lesson in multiplication and addition. He quotes me $550--I agree and pay because I can't take it anymore. Caveat emptor. Something very fishy going on there. read more

Appointments apparently mean nothing to Mavis, so don't bother going online and making one. On their website, there are three options for appointments: drop off before they close for work the next morning; drop off anytime and allow 3 hours; and select an available time and show up then. On 6/13 I made an appointment for 6/15 at 9:30 am. I showed up at 9:25, and rather than sitting there doing nothing went to run a couple of errands. I returned at 10:35, and when I asked about the status of my car was told, "You just dropped it off." When I replied that I had an appointment for over an hour ago, the response was, "And you can't see all the cars I have out here?" Rude, rude, rude. If you sit there and babysit them, they will do the work in a timely fashion. Most of the people ahead of me were walk-ins. If Mavis isn't going to honor appointments, they shouldn't make them. Otherwise, at least tell me that you are behind schedule. I don't appreciate having my time wasted, and won't be back. read more

I was contacted by the customer service after my review here and thought wonderful! Someone at this company does care to ensure that their customers are happy- wrong. I was told they were reviewing my situation and would contact me... Well that was 4 months ago and still am WAITING to hear from them. So not only is this location horrible to women the "higher ups" in this corporation do not care to handle any situation that you will have at this awful tire chain. Worst customer service EVER! I went to this shop to purchase two new tires, having been there before a few times. I found the tires I wanted and before the work started, had them tell me what the total completed cost would be, and I was quoted $228, and I signed the work order. My car was worked on in the bay right by the window and visible from where I sat in the waiting room. My car was driven into the service are almost immediately, the hood was raised, and the vehicle was lifted and all four tires were removed. Then it sat for nearly an hour, after which a tech visually checked my brakes and then mounted the new tires on the front, and replaced the rear wheels on the back. Shortly thereafter, he backed the car out so I approached the service desk. The employee there entered my info into the computer from the work order and then stated the total amount due as $268! I asked how it got so high, and without saying anything, he took the work order out into the service area and talked to someone out there. As he picked it up off the counter, I saw that someone had hand written in pen on the work order "flush brake fluid" and "flush power steering". He came back in and with no explanation at all, readjusted the invoice and then stated the new total of $225! I know that neither service was performed. When I got home, I looked under the hood and there was no evidence of either the power steering reservoir cap or brake fluid reservoir having been touched. No disturbance to the under-hood grime, no fluid drips anywhere or evidence of having been touched at all. If I had not been paying attention, I would have been overcharged by $40. Normally I would say, well it is possible that there was just a miscommunication, but during the hour I sat waiting, I witnessed quoted prices rising substantially with additional services/suggested needs top nearly every customer who came into the shop. You have to watch everything and be on top of every charge when you go to this business. read more

I went to the Latham Mavis twice In the past 12 months to buy 2 sets of tires, for my car and my wife's car. Both times I found the staff to be very professional and helpful. The wait times were reasonable, and as far as I can tell their tire recommendations were perfect for what I wanted. While buying tires is not the most fun thing in the world, I can't think of a single thing to complain about. BTW, I recommend you first visit the Mavis website, where you can check their stock and get user ratings on their tires. read more

Once again I'm writing a review about my problems with his location. Why did I go back? I figured a simple inspection couldn't become an issue. Poor judgement on my part. 1) Dropped the car off at approx. 1pm, for an inspection, by 5 pm I hadn't heard anything. 2) I drove up to the shop to see what was happening with the car, it was on the rack. 3) When I questioned the manager, I was told the car needed front brakes and struts. I went to look at the car so they could prove to me we had those problems. Little did the manager know I'm retired from the auto business, a competent mechanic and a collector of classic cars. 4) The brakes were fine, rotors had a lot of "meat" as did the pads. That discussion went away. 5) The shop claimed the struts had lateral motion. They only checked one side, in fact both sides had equal lateral motion. I wanted something in writing that the struts were "loose" and in fact got an estimate of almost $400 to replace the struts. There was no leaking or any indication of a problem. I went home, called the manager and explained to him that my car has "floating strut mounts" and is supposed to have lateral motion. Yes it's unusual, but a licensed inspector should know to check further. , 6) The shop charges $119 an hour in labor. They go by book time. Explanation, if the book says changing struts takes two hours and the mechanic does the job in an hour, you're still paying for two hours of labor, $238 instead of $119, 6) Reality is, someone without knowledge would have walked out with a $500-600 bill. I've read some of the other reviews and I had a different experience, today and two weeks ago. I got a set of four tires and front struts done first and was pleased with price, quality and time required to perform the work, today I did the rear shocks and an oil change because I was pleased with the work the first time. Today was super busy and still received great service the guys at the counter were friendly, decent repair time and was called by both counter guys that my car was done. I've dealt with Ryan both times and will go back because of him. I had a question about my car and he came out and brought the mechanic too and gave me non BS answers which is a relief for once. Granted the waiting area is bare but it's an auto garage, I just care how my car is fixed, pretty basic. Thank you Mavis , Ryan and the other guys there. Happy holidays. read more

Went to Mavis in Latham a few days ago to get 4 new tires for my wife's SUV - she got 38K out of the original tires that came with the vehicle (Yokohama's) when it was bought in 2013. Had made a reservation online for 9am. Arrived at 845 am to go over all of the particulars. Ryan and Nick on the counter were both friendly and courteous. Car was pulled into one of the bays at 910 am. A short time later, Ryan calls me up to the counter to tell me that they only have 2 of the 4 tires I had ordered. I wasn't thrilled about this but things happen. I ask what he has in stock that can go on the car and he recommends another brand of tire for about $20 less per tire plus a mail in rebate. Just as I am about to agree to go to the other brand, Nick comes back to the counter and says the other 2 have been located. OK............ we are good to go. Tech Brandon dismounts the old tires and bolts on the new ones. Vehicle then goes to the rack for a 4 wheel alignment, which one of the other techs did. Work was completed in a timely manner and I was out the door at 11am. 4 new tires, mounting, balancing, alignment, road hazard warranty, tire pressure sensors, tire disposal fees, and tax came to $900. I've gone to Mavis several times over the past years and have always been satisfied with the service I've received. One thing I would suggest is that when researching and pricing tires on their website, add-ons like the road hazard warranty, tire disposal, alignment, and tire sensors should be listed with the prices. $900 was more than I had planned on spending, but my wife had 4 new Goodyears and she'll feel safe driving her SUV. This place was PACKED by the time I left at 11AM. If you are going to go to Mavis on the weekend, definitely make a reservation online like I did and go early !!!!!!! I can't even speak to their service as I never was able to get what I had scheduled. If you are going to have the ability to schedule appointments and specify if you are going to wait for it then you need to work out a system to honor that. I has a scheduled 9am appointment that I got up and travelled for to find out their was no way they were going to be able to honor my appointment. The answer was leave it and we'll see what we can do. If you can't be organized enough to handle scheduling then remove that function. Make it first come first served which by the looks of the chaos in the waiting area is exactly what you have. Don't set false expectations. I won't have the opportunity to see if they provide good service. I would just beware of this if attempting to schedule an appointment. Good luck. read more

The on-line appointment/reservation feature is useless. I made an appointment and followed the instructions to bring my car in at that time and did so. I was promptly told that this was not really an appointment for service but merely a means for ordering the tires and I would have to wait 3 hours to get them installed. Then I was told that they didn't even have the tires I ordered. The service attendant said it might be delayed because they come from downstate and the weather. I ordered them 2 weeks prior. As the service attendant said, this is a "walk-in" service center. Don't be fooled by the on-line feature into thinking you have an appointment or your tires will be there when you expect. read more

2 repairs have gone back twice within 5 mo. each. Ball joints and now power steering pump & lines. Theres a pattern developing. Started out kindly asking for different mechanic and Mgr started yelling at me. I said maybe I should go to different branch. He said in a very rude voice, I only have one mechanic who is ASC certifide. Do you want to go to another mavis, is that what you want to do? Used MAVIS online too to price match, corporate office called me within an hour, price-matched the lowest quote including install, road hazard, etc. Ordered on Thursday to be installed the next Tuesday. Latham location called to confirm on Friday that the tires, an odd size Perelli, were onsite and waiting. Arrived first thing in the am to avoid the rush. In at 8 and out by 10 - And they replaced the rear shocks too, which I agree were needed. Only did the front tires, but will be back in a few months to get the other 2. I hope the management is solid at this location - they seem to care and treat each customer with respect and do not 'talk shop' and force sales. Witnessed several customers, old & young, male and female, deal with the shop. Impressed with the level of customer service. read more

I had a slow leak in my front passenger tire for a few months and once the weather got colder i was having to refill it almost everyday. I decided to go to Mavis since they specialize in fixing tires and I knew it just needed to be plugged... When i got there, the guy behind the counter explained if the hole was on the perimeter treads, then the whole tire will need to be replaced because of the pressure and the outside treads gripping the road much more. I agreed, but I knew for a fact the hole was not on the outside, as my SO is an auto-mechanic, but didn't have the time or equipment to fix it for me. The hole was right in the center of the tire--the most perfect spot to plug!!! The guy at Mavis came back and and says to me "Yep, the hole is in fact on the outside and we will have to replace your tire for $150 with the only tire we have left in stock" I needed the same brand tire, as it is a brand new car and it is 4 wheel drive and i didn't want the alignment to be off...I decided to NOT go with the replacement and get a second opinion and im so glad i did. I brought it to my dealership, they plugged it within 10 minutes and didn't say a thing about the location of the leak. Long story short, Mavis was trying to get an extra $150 out of me when it should have only costed $17. The one good thing Mavis DID do for me, was fill my air back up and didn't charge me for my visit. All in all, mavis was trying to make a buck off me and i get it, but always scope out other options before committing! ALWAYS! read more

This place is pretty good. They always offer discounts. $19.99 oil change. Small waiting room with a T.V. They also replaced my exhaust. They told me they don't deal with "check engine light" or "trac off" light. I'm not sure what else they don't do but these were the 2 issues I was having. read more

After 5 hours waiting ro 4 tires installed I left with 2 and after 3 attempts thet were not able to set the tire PSI correctly or reset the TPS light. I did it myself at home with no issue at all. I recently had all 4 tires changed at Mavis Discount Tire in Latham, NY. I got a flat tire shortly thereafter which was repaired at another shop in NJ where I live, and there they showed me that the tire did not have bead seal. I returned to the Mavis Discount Tire shop in April for 1) bead seal for all 4 tires 2) Tire rotation and 3) Oil change. While I sat in the shop, I watched the mechanic take the rear driver's side tire off (the one that had been repaired). They took some time working on the tire and then went to replace it in the SAME POSITION. I went to the desk and asked them for a second time to rotate the tires. So they took the other rear tire off and exchanged the two. Clearly, this is not the right way to rotate tires. They had started to loosen the nuts on one of the front tires but never removed them to rotate them or to check if they had bead seal. Once they had replaced the rear tires, they started lowering the car without tightening the front tire until one of the guys realized this and reminded the other mechanic to do that. I was watching all of this take place and opened the door to the shop to ask if they had checked all the tires for the bead seal (I knew that of course they hadn't). They didn't have a good response and asked if I wanted to see the bead seal and I said yes. So they removed one of the rear tires, but instead of showing me the bead seal, they went to do some work on it again. Then they replaced this tire and started lowering the car down again. I opened the door to the shop and asked if he had tightened the front tire because I hadn't seen him do it, and he said "Oh yeah, I'm glad you reminded me about that." Why is it the customer's responsibility to supervise the mechanic like this? That is a very dangerous mistake that mechanic made. I told the guy at the front desk that not only were the tires not properly rotated (which is supposed to be done for free when you have all 4 tires changed at Mavis!), that they were NOT all checked for the bead seal, and that the mechanic needed to be reminded by me, the customer, to tighten the front tire. I was not happy. His response was a weak "I apologize" when what I would expect is, "I apologize, please allow us to complete the job properly, and I will speak with that mechanic about his performance today." I got very angry with his inadequate response, but still all he would do is discount the price of the oil change. What I really would have liked is to pay the full price and have the job done right. read more

I went to Mavis Discount Tire in Latham, NY for an oil change and to plug a hole in my tire. The next moring there was a small puddle of oil on the floor of my garage. I brought it back in that morning to have the problem fixed. The manager said the "tech" over filled the oil making it drip. Did not believe it. When I checked the car the next morning, the manger who "fixed" the problem didn't reattach the plastic guard under the engine so it's dragging under the car. I went to Mavis to get a new set of tires and the staff was rude and not very welcoming. I left my car while they changed the tires and when I returned to pick up my receipt, all of my information entered was incorrect . I don't understand how that is possible when I handed them my license and they had my vehicle in front of them, but my address and license plate were wrong. I did buy the extended warranty on my tires and I can only imagine that they messed up my information intentionally so the warranty wouldn't be valid. A coworker of mine had the same experience, her information was completely wrong as well and she had a friend pick up her car so when she noticed the receipt and contacted them about it they informed her that there was nothing they could do because she had already left the shop. A year later with less than 17,000 miles my brand new tires that I spent over $600 on were already shot and had almost no tread. I was informed this by two mechanics, one at Mercedes and one at Midas who both said I was sold a crappy tire and that they were bald. I do get regular tire rotations and I don't do a lot of driving or off road driving so road conditions, etc had nothing to do with it. I called Mavis and was told that I had to bring my car in for an inspection. I did. I called to make an appointment and was told that they don't take appointments and the gentleman was rude on the phone. I showed up at the shop and asked for a rough estimate of how long it was going to be. Again, I was treated with disrespect and was informed that he couldn't tell me. I then asked well can you please tell me if it will be an hour or more than an hour, again he was told he couldn't tell me. I've never been to a company where they couldn't give an estimate, but instead answer their customers with rudeness. I worked in customer service and it is possible to give an estimate, especially if you've been in the field for a while you know how many cars are ahead of me and about how long each job should take, therefore an estimate is possible. I was informed by the gentleman at Mavis that my tires were fine and I said no they're not. He measured the tried depth off of one strip that runs around the middle of the tire, but the rest of my tired is completely bald and almost all one level, no tread on it at all. I said to him the one middle strip does not determine tread and will not affect how the tire handles on the road when the 95% rest of my tire has no tread. I was not satisfied at all so I called their 1-800 number as stated on the signs in the store that if you are not satisfied to call this number. I spoke with a gentleman named Joel, who was not helpful at all and was as rude as the gentlemen in the store. I stated that I have write ups from other reputable dealers who stated that I was sold a bad tire and that I have no tread and my tires are unsafe and he refused to go by that information. I offered to fax it over as proof and he still refused and said it had to be completed by a Mavis location. It's as if they only what their employees to handle it because of course they're going to say their product is great so they don't have to replace my tires. I also asked him about the appointments and complained about the service I received an he didn't have much to say except that appointments are difficult to make and that he can't do anything because he didn't know what store I went to. I informed him what store I went to and he still said there was nothing he could do. So the customer service line was just as useless and unhelpful as the store. The only response I got from him was that there was nothing he could do. Apparently being 100% satisfied is not part of their motto and they don't actually follow through. Apparently paying for the extended warranty means nothing because Mavis will never admit my tires are bad. Lastly, a friend of mine her boyfriend purchased tires at Mavis and had the same problem as I did but dealt with the East Greenbush, NY location. He stated that he was given a hassle too but he was able to provide a write up from another reputable mechanic to Mavis and they replaced his tires for him, so why wasn't I able to do that? As well her mother went to Mavis to have her snow tires put on. She was charged for the service and when she got in her car to leave she realized that they never changed her tires. Her snow tires were still sitting in the car. So she paid for a service that was never completed. I have never been more dissatisfied with a company or upset. Mavis is the worst company and I will never do business with them again and I will ensure that I tell others not to do business with Mavis again as well as it is a waste of their money because they are sold cheap products the company doesn't stand behind, they will be treated disrespectfully, and Mavis does not commit to 100% customer satisfaction. read more
