I had a disappointing experience at the Mavis in Mahwah today. I brought in my own tires and rims for some tire swapping. Two bad tires were left with Mavis for disposal, while the third tire was put onto a new rim and returned to me. The total bill was $171, which I already felt was on the high side for the work performed, but I paid it without an issue. When I looked at the bill, I noticed I had been charged disposal fees for three tires even though they only disposed of two. I simply pointed this out and asked about the extra $3.50 charge. What bothered me wasn't the $3.50. It was the way the situation was handled. The employee became visibly aggravated that I would even question such a small amount and, rather than simply acknowledging the billing mistake, acted annoyed and essentially chucked the refund money into my hand. I own a business myself, and I understand that mistakes happen. An incorrect $3.50 charge would never have caused me to leave a negative review. How a customer is treated when they politely point out a mistake is a different story. For a $171 transaction, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect an accurate bill and to be treated respectfully when asking a question about it. My husband and I were in town for a wedding (we live about two hours away). On the car ride up, we noticed his brakes were making major grinding sounds. We knew we wouldn't make it back home without getting it looked at, so we decided to quickly look for a car mechanic in the area to fix it. We were thankful that we could make an appointment, especially on such short notice (the following day). We made our appointment for 11:00 AM the following morning. We showed up a little early (around 10:30 AM) and checked in. Unfortunately, because it was so busy, they didn't take our car in until about 45 minutes after our appointment time (around 11:45 AM). Since we did not have a rental car and obviously from out of town, we had to sit inside and wait for the car to be done (which wasn't a huge deal). The cost was a little more than what we were expecting (about $1150), and apparently that was with around $50 off as a discount. However, we obviously didn't complain, as we needed the work to be done in order to get home safely. We thought it was just one brake pad, but it ended up being all of them that needed to be replaced. The people at the front desk must also either work on the cars or help drive the cars to the front of the building, because the workers weren't at the desk very much (so customers had to wait sometimes 7 minutes for someone to show up). I had to go to the bathroom while I was there and I unfortunately wish that I didn't. There is a very narrow hallway leading to the bathroom (I almost had to walk in sideways), and on the floor, there was either a pine cone, a huge roach, or fossilized poop. I didn't want to investigate it any further, I simply got out of there as quickly as I could. After I came out of the bathroom, there still wasn't anyone at the front desk for me to tell about the bathroom situation, so I just went back to my seat. Almost 4 hours later, and thankfully received the car and all was well. All in all, my husband and I are appreciative that we were able to get our car fixed on such short notice, I just think the bathrooms could be cleaned more frequently (so that fossilized poop isn't on the floor). I understand there might not be a designated maintenance person to clean the bathrooms, but it's an overall biohazard. read more

Mavis Tires couldn't mount the 285 tires, which is disappointing, but further up the road there's a small shop across from ACME, and they mounted and balanced them without any problems. I have been a customer of Mahwah Mavis for over 13 years. I spent thousands of dollars on my three cars, and many referrals led my family and friends to go there. At one point, Michelle, a wonderful lady, was the customer service associate, and she helped me navigate all the challenges with our cars. Years ago, one of the Managers made a big mistake on our Vehicle; he put used parts instead of new ones and charged us for new parts. But, he was fired shortly after for drugs, and I never went after them, remaining loyal to the great workers and team they had. The problem with Mahwah Mavis is that the Regional Manager needs more customer service skills and never wanted to hear my concerns. He didn't return calls and made Corporate cut off all communication. BE CAREFUL!!! As long as he is in charge, he will make a mistake with your Vehicle. It all started when my daughter noticed her sticker was overdue from Mahwah Mavis, where she got her last oil change. I took it to Mahwah Mavis on a Sunday, and they said they would call me when the oil change was complete. I received a call from a young lady who told me the oil drain plug was too tight, and she couldn't open it to perform the oil change. Someone at Mahwah Mavis must have put it on too tight since they had done it only a few months prior; I was shocked. She told me she must keep it overnight until her coworker arrived the next day. He was a very experienced, nice guy. The following day, he called me and said that he got the oil drain plug off and discovered that the oil pan was rusted and needed to be changed. He told me to take it to Mahwah Automotive Center. I asked if it was safe for my daughter to pick the car up and drive it there, and he said yes. Since Mahwah Automotive Center was closed when my daughter picked up the car, she drove it home and planned to take it there the following day. She got up the following morning and went to drive it there, but the car shut down in the middle of the very busy turnpike without warning. Luckily, it was early enough for there not to be a lot of traffic, and she could jump out of the car and run to the side of the road. She could have been hurt or worse if there were a lot of cars on that Tuesday morning. The Police came to the scene, and a Tow Truck arrived fast. The Tow Truck driver was shocked to discover that all of the Vehicle's oil was on the turnpike because it all leaked out. He immediately stated that the oil drain plug must have been left off since the oil was underneath the car, which caused the Vehicle to shut off randomly. We explained the oil pan situation to him, and he stated that Mahwah Mavis must not have put the oil drain plug back on. The Vehicle was taken to a local autobody shop, where they looked over the whole car. They called me a few hours later and said they put in a new oil pan and oil and ensured the oil drain plug was closed correctly. When they went to turn it on, the car wouldn't start. Why? Because the engine was seized. A quick Google search, along with knowledgeable mechanics, informed me that the absence of oil in the car caused the engine components to wear out rapidly. Imagine going to Mahwah Mavis for a simple oil change and ending up with a seized engine. I immediately called Mahwah Mavis and spoke to a young man, the Manager or Assistant Manager. He said he gave the keys to my daughter, and they should have advised me to tow it to Mahwah Automotive Center. I was then offered the contact information for the Regional Manager to explain what happened. He was nothing like what I had ever experienced at Mavis. He was arrogant and nasty. He told me he needed the oil pan and proof but admitted that my daughter should not have been allowed to pick the Vehicle up. When we leave our cars in the care of those who know best and a mistake is made, they should be all about helping the customer. I told him I could get pictures from the local autobody shop that discovered the seized engine, and the mechanic there, who has been a mechanic for over 40 years, would speak to him. I sent the Mavis Regional Manager photos of the oil pan and the other mechanic's statement that my daughter should never have driven it. The regional manager needed more time to review the images. I have yet to hear from him again. I also contacted Corporate after my second conversation with him because he was not friendly and insulting. They were very nice and opened a claim. I sent them the pictures, and the young man I spoke to said they would look into it. I thanked him, and the next week, when I called back, they stated that my case had been closed despite the pictures, the mechanic's statement, and just the entirety of the situation. This is the most straightforward case of negligence by Mahwah Mavis. They forgot to secure the oil cap and let my daughter pick up the car. Also, this all started because the oil cap was too tight, which was done by one of them months prior. I am done and suing Mavis!!! read more

Okay to deal with in the beginning, normal, upselling from the front office, but our car was ready on the day we dropped it off and we were able to pay over the phone. If this was the end our experience, this review would be much different, however, we picked up the car at 5pm and by 7pm, the same tire was flat that Mavis had replaced. When we tried to connect with them about the re-flatten tire, Michelle was very unhelpful and couldn't see the coincidence in the SAME TIRE being flat shorty after we picked it up from Mavis. It ended up being that Mahwah Mavis did not replace the valve when they replaced the tire. Michelle jumped the conclusion that it was our fault, and did not offer any help with roadside assistance. So we were stranded yet again, in the middle of no where, and had to pay for another tow. Super frustrating. Will not be back at any Mavis because no one tried to make this right. read more

Took my car there for work a month ago, again last week and now my car is undriveable. They took me for over $4,000.00 in repairs that did not fix the car at all. Now they are telling me it is a problem with the frame and "they didn't know there was a problem with the frame last month" BULL!!!!!!!! They knew, they just wanted the money. They were willing to "fix" the problem if I was willing to spend over another $1,000 but when I flipped out on them they changed their mind and said they can't fix it. UPDATE - I did call customer service, they were nice and wanted to help the regional manager only offered to "fix" the car for around $600 to $800. I am not giving them another penny. The car should never have been fixed in the first place. They should have told me last month the car was not worth it. BUT NOOOOOO it is all about the money with Mavis. read more

What does that have to do with this? If people come in off the street I'm going to serve them first. So why make an appt?? She turns and walks into the bay and ignores me. I was furious and left. I called customer service outside who had to transfer me to a 2nd level Rep who promised me better service at the Ramsey store and he starts arguing with me and says he agrees with her. Don't waste your time or money. I made an appt at the Good Year up the street. It cost a few dollars more but no grief. I made an appointment a week in advance to have new tires put on my car. I show up the day of my appointment and they tell me I don't have one. I show them the confirmation and the guy tells me it must be for another shop. Finally he finds my reservation but tells me that all his bays are now filled and I'll have to wait or come back. Seeing as I took off work I decide to leave it. Eventually he told me I would have to leave because they were closing and hadn't started my car yet. 3 hours and 30 minutes wasted. He spoke to me like I was beneath him the entire time. I've never felt more disrespected in my entire life. This was an absolutely horrible experience. I finally left and made a new appointment for two weeks later. Dropped my car off at 8am. When I called back at 3:30 it STILL was not done. They legitimately have zero concern for your time and are nasty. I tried desperately to have my tires transferred (ordered online through Goodyear) somewhere else, but they couldn't. Blew a tire and had my car towed there. Couldn't really shop around. Said they'd have it ready in a day. Took three business days. The next mechanic to see my car said they put VERY expensive tires on my 2007 Toyota RAV4 (almost $600 for two). Not knowing this at the time, I took my car back there when it didn't start one day. They told me I needed a whole new engine and that it could cost between $5-6K to get the work done. Then they offered me $600 for the car before mansplaining how to check if there was a lien on it. (Persisted after I said there wasn't one.) Took to a reputable mechanic who fixed it for $680. So I agree with the woman who said "Be careful." Though I'd just say "Avoid at all cost." read more

I spoke to a guy name Alex and he said that the check engine light was a miss fire but my spark plugs needed to be changed he said it was gonna be 350.00. I went to pick up my car 10 mins down the road i walk in and there's another guy at the register with Alex and he takes my paperwork and says that they forgot to add something Alex tells him no they didn't he only put in spark plugs the guy added 220.67 to my bill. Car was towed to location for alternator. Also told them 2 brakes were bad. Point is we knew what was wrong with the car. G. called to tell us what would be done. She said they would be doing the alternator, 2 new brakes, a "$60" belt was also bad, it needed a suspension and new rotors. We declined suspension and rotors. We called in a credit card bc we are in SC, they are in NJ. When I got the bill I saw we were charged for the below services that were not even discussed: Power steering flush service Air filter windshield wipers Brake system flush Clean and adjust brakes And the $60 was $105. What exactly happened here? We trusted, being states away, that G. was accurately representing what they would be doing to the car as we wanted to know everything and make informed decisions. We even had them send pictures of the rotors! I got a flat tire New Years Day on my way upstate. We got it towed to this Mavis and left it there with the keys overnight. I called numerous times the day to get an update about what time it would be ready so we can map / plan out the rest of our day since we had to go to work. Every time I called, Michelle was nice on the phone, but kept up selling me with various unrelated ailments to the car (wheel alignment, air gauge sensor repair, getting me on this Mavis frequent customer plan, etc.) Finally after the 3rd time I called around 3pm, she told me the car was ready for pick up. We paid over the phone, and picked up our car around 5pm. Shortly after that (roughly 40 miles ~ 50 minutes later) we stopped to eat around Mamaroneck, NY. We stopped for food, then got back in the car and a few miles later, BAM. THE . SAME. TIRE. WAS . FLAT. No pot hole or anything. We were too far from our home, too far from our family upstate who JUST DROVE US 2 hours to drop us off in Mahwah. We had to either Uber back and forth to our home which would have taken $300+, but decided to sleep in our car for one night. I called Michelle at Mahwah, and she was not compassionate or apologetic at all. UM HELLO I SLEPT IN MY CAR, YOU CAN AT LEAST PRETEND. She was extremely suspicious of what time we picked up the car -- she said it was done at 1pm, which makes no sense because I called HER at 3pm and asked her if it was finished. I had to know what time it would be done, because I was hours away and had to have family drop us off. I told her the entire timeline of EXACTLY what happened and she was dismissive of any idea that the tire could have been their fault. GUESS WHAT? After a beautiful nights sleep in my car (sarcasm, clearly) we went to a tire shop to find out that they NEVER CHANGED THE VALVE of the tire. Which of course costs like $5. Which Michelle, never, ever, mentioned. You should assume when they change a tire, they are changing a valve, especially in a car that isn't new. Because of Michelle's accusatory tone that it was OUR fault, I will absolutely never, ever, visit another Mavis again. And I will sure as heck, tell every one the same. read more

Dropped my car off at 9-930 AM on a Wednesday, 9/21. Issue: Idiot light stated "Maint Req" and I needed new wipers. Have been a customer of this location for 10+ years as is walking distance from my house. During past years Michelle, long-time store manager was always helpful, honest, and informative. Today, first time with new store manager, my wife called twice in afternoon to inquire as to status: "You're next in..." 7:30 PM - I drive past on my way to Acme, they are CLOSED, lights out. No phone call to say "We might not get to it today", or "Sorry we didn't' get to it today" - NOTHING. SQUAT. Upon return home I got my extra keys and walked there and drove my car home. I will go to the Goodyear across the street from now on. Lack of professionalism UNBELIEVABLE. Way to ruin and long standing vendor-customer relationship in one swing. A happy customer might tell a few people of their positive experience; a PO'd customer will tell everyone at every opportunity to AVOID this shop altogether. Way to go, new guy. Three hours later, my car is still on the lift in the bay and my day has been utterly stripped of its useful time, which has been wasted. Just can't say enough good things about this Mavis Discount Tire Location! Driving from Cape Cod, MA, I had Car Trouble on 4th of July weekend in 2020 on the Jersey side of Tappan Zee Bridge. I shimmied & limped along Rt 287 at 40 mph to hotel in Mahwah on Rt 17 checked in & called my brother who called Mavis Tire in Mahwah. As a single woman travelling alone, a broken down vehicle is definitely stressful, particularly on a Holiday Weekend, plus this was early on in the Covid situation. He got me information/appointment - they were only 1 mile from my hotel. They found I'd had real hack jobs done on my Hyundai Santa Fe up here on Cape Cod. The mechanic brought damaged parts out to show me. They were able to do extensive work to repair what was shoddily "fixed" up here on Cape Cod and get my vehicle in good running order. Michelle could not have been nicer or more caring. I could tell I was in good hands by the pride & caring the entire Mavis team took in their work. Segue to 2021 I was driving again from Cape Cod to 4th of July party at my brother's home in Princeton, NJ. My vehicle began shimmying on Jersey side of Tappan Zee Bridge! It was 104 degrees out. I pulled over, opened hood, looked at tires, nothing seemed amiss. I limped & shimmied again to same hotel in Mahwah, brother called Mavis. Both hotel people & Mavis remembered me. Brought car in next morning. They gave it thorough going over & test drive. Best they could determine was one of the calipers on a rear tire stuck on rotor for a time & it eventually released/cleared up. I was able to drive the hour & a half down to Princeton with peace of mind & no worries. They assured me everything was tight under the car. These guys charged me 2800 for things they didn't even done. Brake and steering fluid was still dirty then they didn't even put my oil pan gasket on and used some type of sealant after them telling me I have a oil leak and replacing a pan they didn't touch supposedly. Shit they stripped one on my oil pan screws and damaged it cause the screw won't get in properly. Spark plugs or valve gasket got done.The initial service was an oil change then somehow spent 2800 for a half ass job for things I didn't need at the time and told me my car was unsafe and couldn't leave without getting things fixed. How they inspect my car if they let me take my car with a locked rear driver side brake? These guys are not trusted with my car no more! I still have the oil leak going to them! What kills me is they have an excuse or a reason to tell me that it's my fault like no you never say it's the customer it's most likely those fake ass wanna be mechanics that are probably unlicensed touching ppl cars. This the second time they squeezed money out of me and damaged my cars. What kills me is I told them the car is original meaning no one ever touched the car. So here's the oh other ppl touched it before us excuse... No one did anything to my car besides them. They won't even give me my money back! Don't go here! I went here the end of September for 4 new tires and an oil change. I picked the tires online, and scheduled an appointment for a Saturday. They were super busy that day, and it did take most of the day, but I was able to pick the car up around 4 pm that day. They charge a little more for an oil change than I usually pay (I think $35, and I normally pay around $30 for my SUV), and they did detail a host of other problems (namely my brakes, which really did need to be replaced). Michelle at the front desk was great. They're not my go-to garage, but since I needed tires and my husband had gone there a few months prior, I was happy. Unfortunately, one of my tires went flat due to a hunk of metal being lodged in it, so I made a new appointment for this coming Saturday, and will hopefully continue to have a positive experience. read more

Didn't have a problem with tire pressure light until I bought new tires. Mavis did not take responsibility for it saying it must have been faulty. Have been having issues with losing air in all tires. Returned to have them checked and was told we had to replace one tire. No issues were found with the other tires. Now I came in with a flat and told I need to pay for a tire at a discount. What is the point of extended coverage if I still have to pay! Two other customers came in with similar issues of tires losing air. Mine are only 8 months old and have been losing air the entire time. Poor customer service and shoddy work. Do not go there. My husband and I went together to get new tires for our truck great experience from start to finish. We spoke with Michelle the day before and she ordered and had our tires there same day. She is amazing very hard worker it only took an hour to get the new tires it was a busy Saturday morning and Michelle got people in and out quickly. She she be employee of the year. Nelson and Dan and I believe her name is Michele (forgive me if I'm wrong)always go above and beyond when it comes to finding the best deal for car repairs or tires. They truly are customer service focused and treat all their clients with such respect. Every time I visit the shop I know they are not trying to just sell me things I do not need to make a buck. They are actually looking out for my best interest with honesty and integrity.
