I seriously do not understand how this place can mess up a simple Cobb salad every.single.time. I ask for no bacon, the salad comes out with bacon. I ask for tuna instead of chicken, the salad comes out with chicken. Not even kidding, I have been here 5 times, and have asked for the same salad (no bacon), every single time, and each time my salad comes out with bacon because the waiter/waitress fails to check the orders. That being said, once the correct food comes out, the salads are always delicious and fresh. The bread is to die for, and the bakery is a must on your way out. I get that it's busy but perhaps turn off your order for pick up/take out option if you're overwhelmed. As experienced by another reviewer on here around the same time as myself, I encountered very rude staff and service after waiting 20 minutes in my car. Beyond that I called when I arrived (per instructions) and spent 5 minutes assisting someone else locate my order and spell my name multiple times because they said they didn't have something I ordered an hour and a half ahead of that time. I was apologized to and told they would make it right. I wasn't mad originally but upon waiting and being hung up on multiple times I was told they aren't during curbside when I went inside. If you would've told me that I would've been fine coming in the first time. There's a lack of communication and terrible service. The food is mediocre. Yummmmmmm. It has been forever since I've been here. I got the San Francisco Reuben. It's is Similar to a Reuben. And he has horseradish corn beef cheese and I think onions and marble rye. The corn beef smells so good and tasted even better if that is possible. I need to make it to the neck of the woods more often. I do have to say it's not cheap but you get plenty for your money. read more

The food here is well below the quality, taste, and portion size of a good New York deli. I came here recently for a business breakfast: the bagel was quite bland, the knish was cold and tasteless, and the waiter didn't bring pickles or bread as complimentary items I'm used to seeing in New York and Philadelphia. Nevertheless, the place was busy because there's nothing better on the North Shore. Hopefully some competition will move into the neighborhood one day. by chance I ended up at the Red Roof in motel right across the street from Max and Bennys. After having 3 meals there which included their Chicken Soup with Matzo Balls I really appreciated the portions and selections. Not a place you will ever expect to leave hungry from. The staff was very attentive and well informed about the menu and specials. I had their potato pancakes, salmon patties and corned beef sandwhich. Each was full of flavor and well prepared with ample side dishes and basket of fresh rolls. The soup was served very hot and the Matzo Balls were on the firmer side which is my favorite. Always dependable, but tends to get crowded on weekends. For some reason, we thought going here on Passover weekend was a good idea. Despite the big crowd in the restaurant and in the waiting area, we got in after less than 30 minutes. We were gifted with the greatest waitress and John, the manager, also took good care of us. One of us had the thinly sliced corned beef, piled high on fresh slices of rye bread. Another had their corned beef hash, sunny-side-up eggs, and fresh bagels. I had their excellent French toast, scrambled eggs, and chicken sausages (see photo) with a freshly toasted bialy. Also got a tall glass of freshly squeezed O.J. I'm a bit surprised at all the 1- and 2-star reviews. I've never had a bad meal nor poor service at M & B's ... The other day I ordered (online) the "bake your own bagels" kit. Sadly, the online ordering system has no option to add fish. I immediately called, and they happily added half a pound of nova without any fuss. M & B's asks that you call upon arrival for pickup. I did .. and my order was brought out in seconds. The attendant was polite, and he was gloved and masked, and was wearing the mask properly, with both mouth and nose covered. I can't tell you how many "covidiots" I've seen who improperly wear masks, but I digress. So ... how were the bagels? DEEEE-LISH !!!! The bagels were light, airy, chewy without being dense, and the "skin" had a nice "bite" without being tough. The instructions said to proof in the fridge for 24 hours -- we didn't want to wait, so we proofed, covered with plastic wrap on the counter for a couple hours, then baked according to the instructions. I would definitely order these again, but leave out the dried onion flakes. The flakes got a little too toasty and mostly fell off. I also had some "everything but the bagel" seasoning blend from Trader Joe's, so we made two "everything" bagels to boot !! If you're on the fence about Max and Benny's ... give it a try. The bakery does an especially good job with "themed" cookies. For example, the Super Bowl cookies were beautiful. Whenever there is a Presidential election, they do a great job of making cookies in the image of the candidates. I used to think of the deli as a classic. I'm now thinking of it as tired. It's about 30 minutes form my house. For the same driving distance, I can be at Manny's where the food is superior. read more

I'm so disappointed, I was feeling very sick with flu and recalled memories of what my ex called Jewish penicillin, chicken soup which he always got from Max & Benny's with many rolls including my favorite fluffy croissants. Instead I got a too salty broth with only 2 not so fresh rolls , I was dehydrated so I literally had to force myself to consume it....maybe because they were getting ready to close for the day so I got the bottom of the barrel! Very good food, but horribly slow service. I took my family twice in the last two months. Different waitress each time. They both messed up the order, barely checked on our table, and we waited close to twenty minutes for our check after our meals were finished. It was not very busy either. If this was my first time ordering corned beef sandwich from Max & Benny's I would never go back. Our family as been going there for years but this time was a bust. We ordered 4 CB sandwiches for carry out along with 2 matzo ball soups. The corned beef was dry and not much meat on sandwich, rye bread did not seem fresh and the coleslaw was mostly liquid. Someone should have taken a spoon with slots to drain off the juice so there would have ben more slaw in cup. Will think twice about going back. So disappointed. read more

This restaurant came highly recommended. I went there expecting high quality food. I was very disappointed. I ordered eggs Benedict. The eggs was poached properly. The hollandaise was good. But the english muffin was rubbery and not crispy at all. What really upset me, though, was that underneath the egg was a thick piece of polish ham. I mean like a sweet carving ham. It was not Canadian bacon. Not even close to the flavor of Canadian bacon. However, when I buy corned beef at close to $19 a pound I would think they'd give us and everyone quality food. I stopped in again for lunch and found the menu to be a little pricer. I mean 13.95 for a rueben sandwich when the Pavilion a few doors down has a $8 pre fix lunch that is great. The restaurant is not as busy as it used to be. Still great for matzo ball soup and having coffee while entertaining your guests. I would not come here for lunch or dinner again there are so many better options now. They have good bread and coffee has free refills. The bakery is still a power house sprouting out Obama cookies and fresh bread and lunch meat. The sandwiches are great if you want to pay an entree price for it. Have been going to this restaurant for over 30 years. Went there today to pick up some Mish-Mosh soup for my daughter who was not feeling well. She called me two hours later to tell me the soup was great, but that there were no matzo balls in it. I called Max and Benny's that evening and spoke to Sid, a "supposed" manager, who said he would be very happy to comp me for two matzo balls but not for the soup. My daughter loves this soup and her favorite part is the matzo balls. Sid should have comp'd for the whole bowl of soup. C'mon Max and Benny's; you're better than that! read more

I'm ashamed to say that I'm a New Yorker and I've never been inside a Jewish deli. I literally winced when I saw the menu's introduction proclaiming the need for a NY-style deli in Chicago ... man. Anyway, after eating here, I decided that I MUST go and find these NY delis here in NY. Weird). I went for brunch and Max's was PACKED. So maybe make reservations ... I didn't realize that that would be necessary. They were pretty fast with getting us seats, though :) I ordered an open-faced Turkey Pastrami Reuben with Manchego cheese (I really got it just for the cheese, which I love). The service was excellent; when I said that I didn't want coleslaw in the sandwich, she asked if I would like sauerkraut. And when I hesitated, she said she'd bring some on the side so I could try it. So nice! :) (I ended up preferring the sandwich by itself). My boyfriend got the Monte Cristo, which he expected completely deep fried. (It wasn't). I was a bit put-off by the French toast because I didn't think the sweet and savory mixed together all that well, but he liked it. The bread basket is AMAZING. I think it's probably $2-3 worth of bread; they have an incredible variety. Bagel chips, rye bread, sweet bread, soft bread, onion bread ... wow. It was awesome. If you like unpleasant service with big portions and mediocre food, you will love Max and Benny's. it was surprising to, because the deli was great. All kinds of cookies and treats and breads and deli meats. The deli is four stars for sure. But this review is based on our breakfast. Visiting home for the Holidays and my younger sister recommended this place. We all showed up early and were seated quickly. The menu is big and it was difficult to decide what to order. The food was "different." chicken noodles soup here means noddles in chicken broth and the matzo ball soup was in the same broth. Flavor was clean and light, very simple chicken broth. Our sandwiches were as usual. Okay coming from Texas we shouldn't have ordered this but wanted to see what a brisket sandwich looks like here up north. You be the judge pic added.
