Central Cafe offers a limited drink selection as well as breakfast plates, crepes, waffles, salads, bowls, and sandwiches. They also had some pastries behind a case, but they seemed a bit dried out and nothing out of the ordinary. We ordered: +a Cafe au Lait +a couple of Cafe Lattes with almond milk +a Pesto Caprese - a baguette with basil pestos mozzarella, and oven-dried tomatoes The drinks came in a generously-sized mug, but they were all weak. The sandwich could have been good, but it was not prepared nor heated properly, as it was cold on the inside but hard and chewy on the outside, making it difficult to eat. Besides the drinks/food being mediocre, the staff here is what makes this place really something - the individual who was at the front area, taking orders, has some type of an attitude issue. She forgot to give us a table number stand (and, other parties), picked and chose to deliver drinks and/food items to certain tables (and, became irritated and annoyed that some weren't picking up their items - she wasn't even calling out the orders and seemed to expect patrons to have ESP?), and spoke to individuals in a condescending way - pretty appalling . When she delivered our sandwich plate, she handed it over aggressively, almost having the items spill over. Like, what's wrong with you? Why are you putting it on others when you're unable to communicate, do, or handle your job properly? [[HIGHLIGHT]]In addition, one of the staff's child was running around, screaming, and walking and jumping on the seats.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Great that the place allows you to bring your kids to work, but come on. [[HIGHLIGHT]]What's hilarious is that the cafe has a large signage hanging by the entrance area that states 'Kindness Matters' - it's obvious that this wall piece is strictly for decor and not at all believed in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place itself has a handful of table with some outdoor availability for al fresco dining, and there seems to be a regular flow of foot traffic from the locals.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Such a poor and a ridiculous experience. Some street parking and some spots in the rear of the building. +rude staff with attitude issues +watered down coffee +improperly prepared sandwiches +street and rear lot parking available

Love this little place that's attached to a great store! I read some of the other reviews, but I have to say everyone was very nice and the food and coffee were delicious

I wasn't in the mood to cook breakfast so I went over to Central Cafe for a quick bite. The food is fine but I could make it at home which is why I'm giving it a lower rating. I am also giving it a lower rating because the service could have been better. The girl bringing out food to each table needs an attitude check and to be retrained on customer service etiquette. I liked that the ingredients are fresh but for the price, it's not worth it. I will only come here again if it is the last resort or if my meal is being paid for. It's only okay.

Central Ave Cafe is a treat. Not only is it handy on Central, but the selections are creative and fun, and the food is wonderful. A real pleasant surprise is the reasonable pricing! Everyone is a pleasure to interact with and the grill staff are really talented. One favorite is the Havarti and Turkey sandwich. Today I tried Mushroom, Swiss Cheese, and Caramelized Onions. It's great. It's complete with a bit of salad (very fresh veggies) with a nice sweet dressing, very tasty. Highly recommended. The Blueberry coffee cake amazing as well.

Came here for my annual visit while in town. Still a great place to grab a bit and sit for a bit. The workers there are friendly and the food and coffee are good. The only thing is the WiFi was a little slow for me. Otherwise still a great place

Came here before a White Sox game and this was the cutest breakfast spot we could have chosen! The menu made it so hard to not get the entire list! Everything sounded delicious, we all decided to get a version of the Benedict. My mom, step dad and boyfriend all gave their meal 2 thumbs up! This place would be a 6/5 if I could choose. Highly recommend giving this place a try, they are dog friendly we sat around various puppies and dogs this day. It was beautiful weather to sit outside and enjoy a nice meal with the family!

Great little spot! I enjoyed the coffee, omelette, and service. Worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood.

A cute, bright cafe! Like the bakeries here and the coffee was decent. Got an iced latte and chocolate cheesecake loaf and had nothing to complain. Definitely a good place to get coffee if you are in downtown highland park.

Cute little coffee shop, the interior is super clean feeling and peaceful. I got an iced coffee with oat milk, the chicken and waffles, and the banana mini loaf. I hate to talk anything bad about a small business but... I would avoid the chicken and waffles, it was pretty bad. The chicken breading was almost soggy with no crisp or crunch what so ever. Also the banana bread wasn't great either, not very banana flavored and a little too bready. Next time I'll order different items and hopefully they'll be better!

Adorable cafe in the heart of downtown highland park with a European feel. Ordered a delicious marshmallow filled hot chocolate and can't wait to return to try their food. They are open on Sundays which is great as the rest of the block is closed. Bright, airy, cheerful little cafe. Recommend!

In a world where most spots are jacking up prices while lowering quality, this place is sticking to the New York gold standard. The line is a total marathon. You're going to wait, and it's going to be a while--but that's the tax you pay for food that actually has a soul. Don't let the deli line distract you. It's white noise. Stay focused on the bagels, the bialys, and the accoutrements. The breakfast sandwich is, hands down, the best in town. Period. It's simple, inexpensive, and lacks any of that "cheap filler" logic you see at other breakfast joints. It's just a masterclass in doing the basics with real care. If you have the patience to survive the wait, you won't find a better return on your investment.

My experience with this location was not good. We placed an order online. It was placed a little over an hour before the scheduled pickup time since I was heading to the suburbs for an errand and would pick it up on the way back home; pickup time was 8:30. My errand took a bit longer so but I arrived around 8:40 for pickup (at Once Upon a Grill; they must get it a lot because they pointed me to the Deli). When I got to the Deli and let them know I was picking up an order I placed the man looked confused, asked if I placed an order, then walked down and looked at something and said to give him a few minutes, during which they cooked my order. So the order placed an hour before pickup was 20 minutes late because they don't check their system. I learned later that they open at 8-about 40 minutes after the order was placed--but whatever system they use has controls for when to take orders and when to stop online order taking. If they're going to allow folks to place orders before the shop opens for pickup after, they need to either update the schedule for the online ordering system to not accept orders before opening, or they need to look and see what if anything has come in. Really disappointing because this made me running late for work. And it wasn't helped at all by the attitude of the folks working there. Not a sorry, not an excuse or explanation, nothing. And even with that indifference I was going to buy a dozen bagels and some cream cheese, but the guy just tossed my order on the counter when it was done without a word. So, I left. There are better bagels elsewhere anyway.

Today's visit to QUAD served 2 purposes.  As my AA miles were about to expire, I went on the AAdvantage Dining website to find a restaurant that is affiliated with the program, so that I could spend some money there so as to earn some miles before the deadline, in order to prevent my hard-earned miles from expiring.  That's the main purpose of me going to Once Upon a Deli! Of course, I went there also because of the food!  The deli was clean, and seemed very well-stocked and carried a great variety of deli food and ingredients.  The staff were very friendly and helpful.  I ordered the food to-go.  It was in the early afternoon, and I was delighted that they still happily made me an All American Breakfast Sandwich. You can pick any ways for the eggs to be cooked, and the kind of meat and cheese.  I had sunny-side-up eggs, sausage, and Swiss cheese (they ran out of Mozzarella cheese as it was already after one O'clock) on an all season bagel. There was so much yummy food!  The staff told me that they left the sandwich opened in 2 halves because the eggs were not fully cooked. That was pretty thoughtful of them.  I also ordered a raisin bagel with strawberry cream cheese. It was toasted to perfection, with a nice crispiness on the outside, and the right kind of chewiness inside. That's what a perfect bagel should be!  It had a slight sweetness because of my fruity choices.  The bagel was big and was packaged very well. I read that people had driven long distance to OUAD for their bagels.  We are so lucky that it's only a 5-to-6-minute drive from home.  I will definitely come back for more bagels.  We will try more different items from their vast menu too!  Next time, it will just be for good food, and won't be for AA miles!
