I ordered from here at least 10 times or more in past few 4 or 5 Months. I always get delivery. I had an order today and they called me to say the stew was not available so I said I would take the pot roast. Instead I got a block of ice that after I scraped off the ice I saw it was pepper steak. When I called the restaurant I got the rudest lady. Instead of just being nice and thanking me for my business she said well you have to call Doordash cant help you. Which is fine but I really have not encountered anyone so rude and mean. We had been going to Max's for the past 10+ years a few times a year when we're up in that area. It was time for a change. Walking in the first thing you notice is the large busy market area and the wonderful looking baked goods in the front. They have a large dining area that was hoppin on a Saturday afternoon. The menu is much much larger than Max"s. Wanting to try some different I had a Chopped Liver, Corned Beef and Pastrami on rye. It's was large.. I only ate half. Since they were featured on Chicago's best for the Matzah Ball Soup I had to get a cup. It was quite a cup very large with great flavorful broth. The Matzah balls were some of the best I had had. It's hard to say we like it better as we're such creatures of habit we had gotten the same thing basically for 10 years. One of the things I loved about Max's is the great Bread basket, they may have even exceeded that, stellar basket.I love the market and love the larger menu and larger sandwich's. We bought a bunch of things at the market including the best cinnamon sugar Bagel chips I had ever eaten we also bought lox cream cheese, chive cc and bagels. All excellent. read more

Allergy friendly!!! They have a huge gluten free menu, but what really makes this place unique is they have gluten free chicken NOODLE soup! I haven't had noodles in soup for years, it is such a treat. I always add carrots too. Love their gluten free bread and offerings. Pickles to snack on are a plus too if your waitress remembers to bring them out! Always have a nice older woman, but last time we had a young girl who seemed very annoyed with my allergy requests. There used be place called Zwegs deli in desplaines which was excellent it has been closed for a long time I would say this place is better then that every could have been and I loved that place. This is not as close to my house but when we are in the area we make it a point to stop by they have the best corn beef and rueben sandwiches by far the only place that I could think that would be just as good would be Perry's deli downtown Chicago. There service and food is beyond decadent. They also have a excellent bakery. Not cheap but you get your money's worth. read more

I just have to say what a great job Max and Bennys is doing during the pandemic. They've totally adapted, and they have their system for carry-out and curb-side pick-up are like a well-oiled machine. I was so thankful to be able to go in to order and carry-out all my favorites, and I was grateful for their employees who continue to work during the pandemic, and make sure we all have what we want and need to feel somewhat normal during these abnormal times. They truly adapted to what the situation calls for. I had tears seeing their once bustling dining room serving only a few tables. Fortunately, the line for curb-side pick-up was long! They must have gotten the pastrami on my sandwich from a old school cattle rustler whose strands of rope got stuck in the meat. I mean really, every bite of my half sandwich came with dangling cartilage I had to unceremoniously pull out of my mouth while talking to my friend seated across from me. Kitchen staff (calling them "cook" or "chef" would dishonor those appellations) COULD and SHOULD ensure that the meat being served is appetizing, but they didn't. Unfortunately this restaurant is a huge no on two levels. First, their prices are astronomical. $17 for a bowl of soup? I don't think so. However if the quality was there, I would have bit the bullet and paid their price. Second, the quality isn't there. Here's some examples from our meal on Thursday, 7/18. Their kishka is made New York style. What is New York style? The texture is grainy and loose and falls apart; the color is reddish. It lacks the spices needed to give it flavor. Wouldn't surprise me if it's pre-made and imported from NY. BTW, the kishke was served cold and had to be returned to be reheated (probably in a microwave). Their potato pancakes are machine made, dry, and unappealing to the eye. Anyone who grew up in Rogers Park and who ate Rocky's potato pancakes knows that a great potato pancake is handmade, greasy, and tastes wonderful. Their corn beef lacks flavor and was fatty. The sandwich was served with a slice of new pickle, which should properly be renamed, "used to be new pickle". The operative word is, "fresh". This pickle was not fresh. I miss the old restaurants where quality and flavor came from treasured family recipes that were faithfully followed. We've been going to Max & Bennie's for many years with no problems. Usually I would order a lox plate, but last visit I tried the whitefish special. Wife ordered a club sandwich. The plates arrived and after the first bite there was a "fishy" smell to the whitefish. We called the waiter over and said I cannot eat this....please take it back. A few minutes later he returned and said the chef says there's nothing wrong with the fish and we'll still have to pay for it...even though I did not eat it. I said we're not paying for something we did not eat....please bring the manager. The chef then comes to the table and starts arguing with us in front of all the surrounding customers and claims he is the manager. He insulted us and we said we'd talk to the owner. He said do what you want. As we have owned restaurants and wife actually taught food safety to restaurant chain operators, we know seafood is delicate and could spoil at moments notice......anytime there's a hint of ammonia smell its probably a good idea not to eat it. They eventually took the dish off the bill......but that's not the point. I was a frequent diner at this place with a M &B card. We will not return.......EVER! read more

On our final day in the Chicago area, we first went to the Botanic Gardens and needed a place to eat before going to the airport to fly back to the Bay Area. A friend had recommended Max and Benny's and it did not disappoint. From the kreplach chicken soup to the sablefish to the corned beef and pickles, everything was excellent. A great old Jewish deli. Horrible! Ordered through Door Dash. They forgot my bagel and gave us Tropicana bottle of orange juice but advertised as "fresh squeezed" called to let them know. The horrible manager I spoke with has terrible customer service skills and tried blaming the Door Dash driver! We tried finishing our food but it's pretty much unedible. The owners are sleazy and greedy to the core. I had my first experience today and wanted to have a quick grab with my family at the bakery as we were in a hurry. Instead we ended up sitting at the restaurant (we were pushed there by the owner), then given a simple turkey sandwich which was sold at $15.50 (I have never been fooled this badly in my life by an old man). Then they tried to up sell a simple Chicken Plate to my wife by calling it white meat. The waiter said "I am trying to follow orders". I really like this place because it reminds me of the famous "Canters" in Los Angeles that I used to go to with my grandfather. Not quite as good but old timey feel and deli meat smells that hang in the air are like comfort food for my soul. Upon sitting down we were presented with a basket of different types of bread. In particular we really like the parmesean crusted bagel thin. Yummy and I haven't seen these in any other bread baskets before. I ordered the matzo ball soup and a bagel with lox spread. The matzo balls were perfect. Not too hard and not too soggy. The broth had good flavor but might have been just a tad on the salty side. No veggies in the soup either. Would have been nicer with a carrot slice or two. The bagel and lox spread were fine, really nothing remarkable either way to speak about. My dining companion had the pancakes. Gluten-free review -- We came to meet relatives around 2:30 PM on a Sunday in early July. Since it was between meal shifts, the place wasn't all that busy, so service wasn't much of an issue for us. I've been coming here on and off for several years -- pretty much since the beginning. Not all that much has changed. They have no GF menu, but have few items mentioned in a section of the multi-page regular menu. There also are other items that also could be adapted to be GF and more options with their dinners. Some might say too many choices overall. They offer cocktails and brews now, though I haven't seen any indication of any GF beers, but they do offer hard cider. I've mentioned in other reviews that I am somewhat of a wine snob (though I don't necessarily have only expensive tastes). Their wine selection here has nothing I would have a palate for. But I wasn't really there to drink alcohol at that hour anyway. Their fare, and expectations of its preparation, is relatively standard for this type of kosher deli restaurant. Here are some other not-as-obvious things I would note: * Their chicken soup is prepared without additions, so it is GF to start. If I get it, I add Kasha (buckwheat groats are GF). Rice would be the only other GF add-in option. Though the soup itself is often a bit too salty here for my taste. * They offer gluten-free sliced bread as a substitute for any bread or buns. It's looks and tastes like Udi's brand white bread (and probably is). They also maintain a dedicated toaster for toasting just this GF bread. * Their fryer is not dedicated, so fries would not be GF. * If the pure taste of brewed iced tea is important to you, note that they use instant. Don't expect a gourmet meal or inventive preparation with extra herb/seasonings or flair. It's a basic home cooking type of place. If you want something prepared a little differently you can request how you would like it made and maybe they can do it for you. For example, when I got the #3 Lester's Favorite turkey sandwich on GF toast this time with a cup of soup, I asked for honey mustard dressing instead of using the yellow mustard on the table. It was a nice addition and still GF. On your way out, check out the deli counter, refrigerator/freezer, and displays. They have some GF choices there. True kosher deli restaurants appear to be a dying breed. There are only just a few left in the extended suburban north/northwest area that I know of. I hope this place doesn't take its customers for granted and continues to improve where it needs to and exceed past standard expectations, so it will stick around. read more

I love Max and Benny"s. Let's start there. But today when I called there to order some food to be delivered to my elderly mother I had a very bad experience. The person on the phone was very rude to me so I hung up. I then proceeded to call max"a deli afor Nd place an order to be delivered to my mother. So I spent $100 so my mother can have some good lox and bagels as well as some Mandel bread and some other deli items. So this review is not a don't go to Max and Benny"s because it is still a great deli but if the way I was treated on tu he phone is how people are treated in the store, that would be sad. Many different options of soups to choose from. Mish mosh is my favorite to take home. (Large container only.) A bit of everything, delish ! We love M&B's! It reminds me of the diners my Grandma took me to as a kid! We recently moved to HP and it's a go to for us. I bring all of my family here because it's just good food, great service, and great staff! The rolls are TO DIE FOR! It's worth filling up on the bread. I love that it's a deli and bakery as well! My wife just picked up an order for a relatively large family dinner and even though she went out of her way to order extra rolls because she was told that only four came with our order, only four were included instead of the nine that we paid for. When she called to complain, the person she talked to clearly didn't care enough about our ongoing business to deserve to retain it. We have been extremely good customers and have gone out of our way to continue to support local during the pandemic. It was clear from the conversation that any reasonable gesture that showed that our business was appreciated would have been sufficient, but we were left with the opposite feeling. If something as simple as a free quart of soup on our next order had been offered, we would still be customers. We live too far away to go back, pick up more rolls and have the dinner we anticipated, but a simple gesture would have given us a good feeling about our relationship with Max and Benny's; unfortunately, our experience was the opposite. read more

I have two new crushes: Max and Benny. A threesome north shore style. But I can't tell which side of the restaurant/deli is "Max's" and which is "Benny's" and how could I choose between them? They're both so darn appealing. Now getting back to the dual nature it's a huge restaurant and big deli. The atmosphere in the restaurant is straight up diner. The deli average looking. The service is ok, chatty at times but why wouldn't they be *smiles*? Anyhow, it's usually busy but not a big wait. The menu is super huge and has a lot of tried and true winners. Delicate, crisp latkes, matzo ball soup (I had my first here! The ball had a nice texture and broth good), mish mosh soup (chicken soup with noodles, rice, matzo ball, kreplach, kasha, chicken pieces, celery and carrots), Rueben (a sandwich invented to make people happy. The turkey version is nothing to sneeze at), challah, bialys, bagels, herring, cool cookies (decorated face cookies or yummy, yet, enormous ones the size and thickness of dictionary) and interesting pastries. Lots of breakfast skillets (naturally) and omelets (nice variety!). Everything is very fresh. The shining stars by FAR were the soups and cookies. But. There's TONS more options that strike many's fancy. I guess you'll have to check it out and if you like it then they might become your crushes too. read more

No, no, no, no, no. Nothing about my experience this past weekend at Max & Benny's was good. We went for my 83 year old grandmother's birthday because she "wanted a good bagel." Okay. Fine. There were four of us. My mom ordered water, and my grandmother ordered a cup of decaf coffee. The waitress offered her new "specialty" coffees (Hazelnut, French Roast, and something else, I don't remember) at no extra charge. My sister and I both opted for a specialty hazelnut coffee. Apparently, this coffee is being grown in the back, then roasted, then ground, because it took fifteen minutes to get a cup. Forget the fact that we were never offered refills and when we were able to HUNT the waitress down for one, we were told we could only get the regular, no refills on the specialty coffees. What? The menu said "bottomless cup" right below the specialty coffees. Flash forward, we've been sitting for about a half hour and still haven't had our order taken. We're finally able to flag down the waitress, who disinterestedly takes our order, and brings the food. Mom: Potato Pancakes (came cold, she asked for extra sour cream, never got it.) Grandma: Nova lox plate. Not enough cream cheese. Bagel was hard. My sister: "Eggs Max" Basically, a toasted bagel topped with lox, a poached egg, and hollandaise. Her brief rundown: the hollandaise tasted like frosting (very sweet), the egg was cold, the lox was hot, and the bagel was untoasted, so it just sopped up all of the gross hollandaise. Me: Corned beef hash w/ eggs. How can a Jewish deli screw that up? Easily. It was cold, soggy, and had the consistency of wet dog food. I left shortly after I finished "eating" because I had an appointment to get to, but my mom relayed the fact later that it took another 30 minutes to get the check. In short, OY VEY. This place caters to the older crowd. The food is quite good. Prices and portions are good. We go a lot to the deli and order things to take home. The Matzo Ball soup is really good. Then, we get the rolls and latkes (which are potato pancakes.) Overall, good quality. We've gone their for years. My grandparents liked it too. I was very disappointed today with this restaurant. I ordered from door dash and was missing food and the pancakes my friend ordered tasted like there were chemicals in them. She threw them in the garbage worried about being poisoned. When we called the restaurant, we were told by Lexi that there was nothing they could do because we ordered through door dash. The only thing that saves this place from getting 1 star is that the Rueben is pretty good. However, it doesn't come with fries and costs more then most other places, which is pretty B.S.. We went here yesterday for New Years brunch while house sitting up north, I would never go back. The place was half full at best but we still were offered a booth right next to the busing station and kitchen entrance, we should have known it would be all down hill from there. It was about 11 am and the coffee was suspect. I can understand if I'm ordering coffee at 10.30 at night in an empty dinner but for it to taste that average that early is not right. The sad thing is it was brewed recently, I think. The bread selection that is gratis on very table was also not so hot either. We started with some Matzo Ball Soup, which was decent but nothing special. It was just the plan broth type with the Matzo, no fixin's. I ordered the Rueben, no kraut sub slaw, it was actually pretty good but pricey and without fries. Cole Slaw there is very mayonnaisie so that was o.k. on the sandwich but not so hot as the provided side. The lady got one of the grosses breakfast I have seen in a while. Now, it would have been fine if it was the $2.50 special at a greasy spoon, but this place is no greasy spoon and it certainly wasn't $2.50. The pancakes were undercooked but some how still managed to taste dry. The scrambled eggs were pretty gross too, more scrambled milk then eggs. Sausage links were really greasy and not of good flavor. The whole experience kind of caught me off guard because the last time we were up north we went to George's What Cooking, across the street from this place, which I thought was excellent, on every level, from the bread on the table to the service to the coffee. We both order exactly the same thing there and with a much better outcome. When I told everyone I know from up north about George's and how good it was they acted like I just peed on their grandma's grave and how could I go there when Max & Benny's is right across the street. If you are ever up north and looking for a good dinner fix, hit of George's and be glad you did. I think there is just a lot of nostalgia for Max & Benny's while George's has the goods. This review is strictly for their deli sandwiches to go: I came in here today to try one of their deli sandwiches for lunch. I got the roast beef sandwich, which came with a small side of coleslaw and a pickle. The sandwich came out to $12.95 with a small can of lemonade. The roast beef was literally just a clump of raw. It wasn't good raw either. The sandwich was large, but it doesn't really justify the price tag. The service was a bit on the slow side as well. I definitely can make a better sandwich at home for $12.95 or get a better meal elsewhere. If that's how much they charge for a sandwich, it should be delicious, and the meat flavorful, not just a clump of nasty raw meat. The cashier/employees weren't too friendly either.
