The portions are still huge. My friend got the pork schnitzel with the creamy mushroom sauce, which was tasty but made the schnitzel soggy. I got the pork shank which came steaming but not as hot as it looked. It looks huge and still a good portion but most is bone. The spatzle was not bad and had more flavor than I expected. The homemade apple strudel wasn't bad either especially the apple pieces but the pastry itself was a little too thin and had an off putting texture to it.
This is my 2nd time here, the food is tasty and reasonable pricing...Got veal schnitzel with red cabbage, spaettzle and cucumber salad...Had the raspberry vanilla sundae for dessert....My only issue is the service we were here on a Saturday and the waiter never checked if we needed anything and impossible to get their attention or to get the check, I think they need to hire more staff there was 1 waitress covering the entire restaurant...
I'm so glad I decided to try Max's Bratwurst und Bier after reading all the great Yelp reviews! When we arrived, the place was busy, and the indoor seating seemed a bit tight. But upon closer inspection, we noticed a covered, heated outdoor area in front and to the side of the restaurant. Despite it being a chilly November day in New York, we had a warm, cozy, and bright experience dining in the outer area of restaurant. With a German restaurant, beer is a given, but since I'm not a beer drinker, I opted for a Riesling. It was crisp, slightly sweet, and the perfect choice - I ended up having two during lunch. We started with a Bavarian-style pretzel, which came with a scoop of Obatzda (a creamy cheese spread), sliced red onions, and mustard. A bite of pretzel, red onion, Obatzda, and mustard made for the perfect combination. All entrees come with two sides, with a mix of typical and some not-so-typical German sides. My friend and I both chose the roasted potatoes with bacon, while she went with sauerkraut and I picked the creamy dill cucumber salad. The cucumbers were sliced extremely thin yet managed to remain crunchy . The dill sauce had a sweetness note that I thoroughly enjoyed. The roasted potatoes with bacon were roasted perfectly. For the main course, I chose pork schnitzel (two crispy fried pork cutlets topped with mushroom gravy) and a "wurst" platter with many sausage options for my friend. She asked the waiter, who's been with the restaurant for 10 years, to choose her sausages, and she loved them! I didn't have any of her lunch, but I did get all the leftovers, so I was able to enjoy the sausages the next day - they were delicious, snappy, and full of flavor. For dessert - I know, right? We were stuffed, but we couldn't resist. I went for something light and chose the Heisse Liebe - vanilla ice cream with hot raspberry sauce. It was refreshing and the perfect way to wrap up the meal. My friend, who lived in Germany for a year, called the apple strudel the best she's ever had - and I'm taking her word for it! The service was excellent, with friendly and attentive wait staff. As we left, we noticed additional beer barrel tables on the sidewalk with high wooden chairs, as well as a significant amount of picnic tables behind the outdoor enclosure - probably used during warmer weather. Parking is tricky, but if you have patience, you can find a spot. We got lucky and found one just a block away. Overall, a great experience, and I highly recommend it!
Authentic vibe and people, great spot to take the family or catch up with friends. Florian and Lilia are awesome, started us with a round of favorite brews - Radeberger pils and Hofbrau lager and also introduced us to a delicious Apple Strudel for dessert. Perfect with Hofbrau dunkel. They also have 1 and 2-liter boots for the extra thirsty! The Max Platter is amazing, choice of 4 brats and came loaded with extra goodies and topped with eggs!! Perfect as a huge breakfast platter for 4. Very lucky find, will be back for more!
I came here on a Friday night with my family a while back, but realized I hadn't left a review for this place! Overall, a super experience. Family-friendly restaurant with delicious food that everyone will enjoy. The place does get packed so we had to wait a little to get a table, but we didn't mind. Totally worth the wait! The staff were so nice and accommodating. Authentic German food with cozy vibes. To start off, we ordered the Laugenbrezel (pretzel) and the Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes). We also got ourselves a beer. The pretzel was so warm and soft. I loved the cheese dip that came on the side. Potato pancakes were nice and crispy and came with tasty applesauce. I think the applesauce was also homemade. The beer portions are huge! Gotta say, I really enjoy the taste of German beer. Can easily be split with someone. For entrees, we ordered the pork schnitzel and chose to add the creamy mushroom sauce. The pork was nice and tender and cooked perfectly. Breading was crispy. The mushroom sauce also gave it a nice flavor. It came with a hearty amount of cabbage. Overall the food is very filling! Unfortunately we had no room for dessert haha! But we will definitely come back to try that. I'm curious for their apple strudel, which everyone raves about. Reasonably priced and I highly recommend :)
My boss took us here two nights in a row. I'm from Jacksonville, FL and if this place was in my neighbourhood, I'd be there at least once a week. Very casual place with great German meals and snacks and of course a very long list of German beers both on tap and in bottle or cans. I had the chicken schnitzel with cabbage and potatoes with a pretzel the first night and it was perfect. Nothing overly fancy and the chicken was very moist. I had a bratwurst the following night which was insanely large and delicious. This isn't a fancy overdone place, this is a casual neighbourhood hangout with everything you'd ever want in a casual German restaurant. I only wish it was in my neighbourhood. Hopefully the next time I'm in NY, we'll swing back in again.
Pretty solid spot in Astoria that's worth stopping by if you're in the area. Beer is great and super affordable. I like the vibe of this place and the outdoor seating is great when the weather is nice. Staff is very nice and accommodating, I ordered the Schnitzel BLT but wanted chicken schnitzel instead of pork and they were happy to make the substitution. My partner ordered the Chili-Cheddar Brat and the Rinderbratwurst which were both very good.
I'm not the biggest German food connoisseur but this place is pretty darn good. Located in a residential area of Astoria, it's more of a neighborhood spot than destination but that's part of it's charm. The beer selection here is pretty decent and the food fits it perfectly. The wife and I got the platter that had a bit of everything - sausages, schnitzel, potatoes and cabbage. Everything was tasty and the portion was massive. It was really meant for 3-4 people so we ended up taking most of it home. Prices are reasonable and the vibe is relaxed and friendly. It's a bit of a smaller establishment so when it gets busy, you're going to have to wait a bit. They do have outdoor seating so that helps. Definitely a nice biergarten to go and grab a bite and chill.
After choosing Dillinger's across the street over Max Bratwurst one time to many (those wings, IYKYK), I finally made it a point to enjoy the outdoor seating here on one of the first nice days this spring and am so, so happy that I did. We started off strong with a free check-in beer (thanks, Yelp!) a light and refreshing Gaffel Kolsch blonde ale. My go-to is usually a Radeberger or Hofbrau for German beers, but I liked this so much I stuck with it and ordered a larger version. The prices here are more than reasonable. I was shocked that we ate like kings and only owed $20 each plus tip at the end of our meal after having two beers each, a huge order of fries, a pretzel with cheese and an order of potato pancakes, which were perfectly crispy and so delicious. Service was prompt and friendly, even though we were seated kind of deep along the outside of the restaurant our server made sure we were well taken care of. As far as ambiance goes, this has to be one of the best outdoor seating options in the area. The string lights really make it feel magical at light, and we were well positioned to see the bright pink sky since we came around sunset. Would definitely recommend this spot for a date night, super romantic and fun!
Visited on weekday evening. The space is pretty casual and trendy. Loved all the interior. Very well designed. They have both outdoor and indoor seating. At the time, they had windows and doors opened. There are plenty of street parking spaces and electric car charger stations. There aren't too many covered garage around this place. Public transit is a bit difficult but accessible. Foods were great! Pork jock was well cooked. Very tender and flavorful. It has a steep price, but for authentic German in the state, I think the price is reasonable for the quality. Similar to what I had over trip (sorry for natives) Good beer selections. I tried multiple. The servers are very good at checking on you. They won't really push. Overall, very pleasant visit. Pretty divey restaurant.
In a quiet neighborhood in Astoria, sits a surprisingly great German Restaurant! I have to say, the staff at Max Bratwurst Und Bier are among the friendliest I've ever encountered. Our group of 10 went to celebrate Oktoberfest, and we were ALL allowed the Yelp Check-in perk of a Free .2 Lt Beer (Gaffel Koelsch), which was pretty good! Service & hospitality were wonderful. Knowing this would be a heavy meal, we came hungry, and left super stuffed, with lots of leftovers. The portion sizes were enormous! Great for sharing. Below is our shared menu (shared by 5 ppl): -- Oktoberfest-Style Giant Pretzel w. cheese spread ($12): the pretzel was indeed giant; served with slices of raw onion and 2 different kinds of mustard. The cheese spread was fantastic and went well with the pretzel. (If you don't like cheese, you can also order just the pretzel, without the cheese spread for $9). This giant pretzel was served warm and was delicious. -- Potato Pancakes (3 large pcs/$9): these potato pancakes came with a side of apple sauce and sour cream. They were large and a feast for the eyes; however, we found them quite disappointing. They were nicely crispy but lacked seasoning; you couldn't really taste the potatoes. Surprisingly disappointing. -- Chicken Schnitzel ($19): came with your choice for 2 sides. We chose a double order of "German Mac n Cheese", aka Spaetzel, which was fantastic! The chicken schnitzel was nicely crispy but again, a little bland. Next time, we'd order this with the creamy mushroom sauce for an extra $3. I think the sauce would have made a world of difference. -- Max Combo Platter ($66): This was the highlight of our meal! This platter can easily feed 5-6 ppl, depending on whether or not you also order appetizers. 5 of us shared this platter and had plenty of leftovers to take home. This platter had a sampling of 9 different sausages/brats and your choice of either pork or chicken schnitzel; all served on top of a platter full of home fries, sauerkraut and red cabbage. There were even 2 fried eggs on top of one of the sausages. (See my photos of the platter). Fantastic platter and a must have if dining with a group. All the sausages & brats were distinctive and delicious! Needless to say, we had no room for dessert! Haha Big thanks to Max Bratwurst und Bier for a great experience. We shall be back!
Great little German restaurant in good ole' Astoria Queens! The food was really tasty and cooked to order. I tried the potato pancakes and Wurstplattte , a choice of two brats & two sides ( I selected the freshly made red cabbage and creamy cucumber salad). My co-diners had a hamburger and Schnitzel. They both enjoyed immensely ! The beers on tap are such a great variety. The Oktoberfest Märzen was the perfect compliment to my brats. There is outdoor seating as well, but we chose inside. The staff was friendly and even when it was really busy , they were very attentive. I can't wait to head back to try the Nurnberger brats : small pork sausages served over mashed potatoes & sauerkraut - I am sure I won't be disappointed! Prost!

Came here to avoid the insanity of the Covid Astoria "scene" since this is off the beaten path a bit. COVID Precautious: Being on the corner they have a good setup with table on the street side and the avenue side, although they are pushing their luck with the proximity of the tables. The staff all wore masks (sometimes slipping below their noses) but they seemed to be making sanitizing/cleaning a priority. We watched as they cleaned the menus, wiped down tables and the seats, and had hand sanitizer in pumps readily available near the kitchen and restrooms. The bathrooms could have been cleaner there was some trash on the floor. Towards the later part of the evening there was an overcrowded table next to us who were too close and kept bumping in to us, not good. Our next visit will be earlier in the day to avoid the business of their nighttime crowds The Food: The food at Max has consistently been very good. Brats and beer you can't go wrong. The portions of the topping for the brats were on the smaller side but the entire plate itself was the appropriate size and portion. The Staff: Friendlier than most German restaurants. They were welcoming and we were seating and attended to quickly. read more

Stopped by here on an early Saturday evening to try some German food. Was able to immediately take a seat and given menus for both the beer and food options. A good variety in the sausages here as well as some combo platters. Kept it simple and ordered the "Rinderbratwurst" ($10) as well as the half-liter of the Eiche Doppelbock ($8). Beer comes out first; solid value in the large format bottle and great flavor. Sausage comes out shortly after - a smoked brat inside a sliced bread topped with 'kraut and onions. Overall disappointed in the food, sausage is too dry and the bread seemed stale. Toppings added some flavor, yet it is mostly saved by the beer. Considering the ratings and other options, would want to come back to try something else. read more

Stopped by to try some new beers and after trying 5 different beers I honestly didn't leave having a favorite one (maybe german beers aren't for me). The mac & cheese was good and so was the service. It seems like a popular spot since it was busy on a Wednesday night, nice ambiance. read more

This is one of the best German restaurants in NYC. The food is as good if not better as any traditional dish you would get in Berlin and is inexpensive. I recommend the Schnitzel, Pretzel with Cheese Dip and any Brat in the menu. They also have the traditional Pork Knuckle that you won't find on many German restaurants menu in NYC. Finish off with the Strudel. Delicious. read more
Was craving some German food so I took the train up here to Astoria and I'm very glad I did, the food was delicious. I got the Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage and it tasted super fresh. The fries were run of the mill and not super special so I kick myself for ordering those over the mac and cheese that looked very good. read more

Danke. Thanks to Max for making the meat go down easy. I'm not a big fan of meat. Bu it Was my colleagues restaurant choice for their birthday.. Was glad to see that they had chicken bratwurst. The onions were delicious as was the meat on the bun. The sauerkraut was good and not to sour. The beer was the best and makes me want to speak German. I had the Octoberfest, an IPA, a lager and a pilsner, all good but the IPA was my favorite. Great spot to watch sports, service was excellent. Awf wiedersehen! read more

Holy schnitzel batman! This place rocks! Beer menu pretty extensive and food menu isn't huge but still what they do have on there, they do really well! Also loved that they had an enclosed outdoor seating area with heat lamps and fleece blankets! Started our meal with a laugenbrezel, our server said it was a small pretzel but there was nothing small about this baby, added on the cheese spread for good measure and glad we did (cream cheese, butter and brie with a dash of paprika). We were ambitious and ordered the max combo platter consisting of a huge portion of schnitzel (upgraded to veal), 2 perfectly fried eggs, 4 'wursts of our choosing, a generous slab of leberkase and 4 nuernberger sausages. Also ordered a side of warm red cabbage to help balance out the meat fest. Everything was abundant and delicious. Looking forward to getting back there soon! read more

Everything here is really good. The sides are amazing. Especially the mac & cheese, sauerkraut and cucumber salad. Pork Schnitzels are lightly battered and with the mushroom gravy - a nice add. If you order the ham breakfast meal, the ham is like a thick Bologna. So it might not be for everyone. The bratwurst - nice. read more

This place has become a fav place of mine. This place is pretty cool, it's away from the busy part of 30th ave and I kinda like it that way. It is a very neighborhood hangout but I would go out of my way to go back. The outdoor seating is nice and it really helped the day I went since it was in the mid 70s. The food and the beer is really nice. The food: Schneider Weisse- had a liter of this beer since the waitresses said it was similar to a Hefeweizen. I thought the beer was on the light side in terms of flavor but I still liked it. 3.5-3.75 stars. Met a friend who was here with some people. I honestly didn't even expect to eat but they had already ordered a big German sausage sample platter. It came loaded with about 5 different kinds, Schnitzel, potatoes, sauerkraut, and cabbage. This is a good place to come with a few people and enjoy some pork and beers. Good times. ENJOY!!! read more
Another place that Ellen F. found for us. Her family is from Austria so we can relate to German/Austrian food, as we've had it many of times in Austria, Germany and even in our hometown Las Vegas. In Las Vegas there are maybe three places all of which we have played out. So we found this place from fellow yeeps, reviews and pictures looked good. It's in a old school part of Astoria, Queens surrounded by an Irish pub and an Italian bakery on the corner on 30th Ave. If your going for dinner be forewarned parking is very difficult to find due to being a semi residential area, so if you can take the train to 46th street stop. There is about 7-8 tables with outdoor dining, it is a small dining area yet big enough for a large party. The menu had so many selections!! We opted for the classic schnitzel, you get a choice of two sides. For sides I picked spatzel and home fries. Spatzel was described as German mac and cheese in their menu. Along with the meal I ordered a "boot" of beer, a full 2 liters of Hefeweizen!! I haven't had a boot since Munich! The food was spot on, one of the best schnitzels I've had in the states, IMO very authentic. The spatzel was equally delicious and the home fries really hit the spot with the beer. If you order the Boot they ask for your credit card, apparently they've had issues with people breaking them ;-( Highly recommended German spot in Queens, next time we visit NYC we will be going again for sure and try something else on the menu. If it's not to cold (or hot) you can sit outside and be comfortable, when we went we sat inside and it was open air, totally suitable for our party. Have to order the boot! Everything comes on one place. To use the vernacular: this place slaps. A friend highly recommended the spot so finally indulged and came for the elusive brunch menu and left insanely satisfied. Being a fan of German beers, they have all the hits, lots of sizes, and check in on yelp for a baby 2 oz pour! The IPA was a table favorite and certainly was better in the liter pour. Our appetizers were curry wings and the flatbread. The toppings on the flatbread were really delicious and even the more well done parts of the crust didn't ruin the experience at all. The curry wings were outrageous. Do ask for some extra curry sauce with those wings, you will not be disappointed. I ate the pork schnitzel BLT - my goodness. The sandwich was the perfect ratio of schnitzel, bacon, tomato, lettuce, and the lemon aioli, hot dang. The brats my co-horts ate were epic and that's definitely the direction I'm going next time. Love the different mustards they give, the really spicy one clears the sinuses! We also shared a Dutch Baby off of the brunch menu, which I highly recommend, and the apple strudel. The apple strudel was stupid good. Very warm, cinnamony and even though I was stuffed, I ate with gusto. I even took home some chicken schnitzel and mac and cheese with my potatoes to go and heating up the next day worked wonders. Will definitely be back and can't wait to update this review with more stars and more pictures. read more

We hosted our son Jack's first birthday, Jacktoberfest, at Max and it was a great success. The staff was accommodating, friendly and attentive and everybody enjoyed the food, drink and group activities. They even helped us with decorations, dessert AND an accordion player. Being Astorians, we had other hosting options - Bohemian Beer Hall, Studio Square - but Max hands down was the best: Best Food, Best Staff and best venue - they even taught our party how to toast in German and drink Kleiner Feigling. To quote my friend Tommy "The Mac and cheese Spaetzle changed my life." While I can't say it was a spiritual experience, I will say it's the best German food I've had in New York AND they helped us throw the best 1st birthday party, ever. read more

Great, great food. We went to Max Bratwurst on a Saturday night and there wasn't any line to be seated, which is great. The food was absolutely delicious. We had a chicken schnitzel with mashed potatoes and home fries, and chicken and pork bratwursts with creamy cucumber salad and mac and cheese. The mashed potatoes, the cucumber salad, and the schnitzel were so delicate, the bratwursts, home fries and mac and cheese had richer tastes. Also the beer on tap was delicious. Lastly, service was quick and friendly. Definitely a nice, friendly and cozy restaurant to go to. How soon can we go back again? read more
