I've been a fan for a while of Max Burger in West Hartford CT. Now I am a fan also of Max Burger in Longmeadow, Mass. My wife and I have dined there several times now. It is a fairly large place, and an attractive place. Service every time has been excellent -- friendly, flawless, helpful, and prompt. The variety of burgers is good and there are always specials; all that I have tried have been good. I have yet to see a burger place anywhere that always gets the temperature exactly right, but the misses have been few and also close. Ordered takeout from the bar, either the bartender entered the ticket wrong or the kitchen ignored notes but we were deliver at the bar two sandwiches and a bowl of chili (there was 6 items in this order) at the bar, after explaining that this order was to go they were returned to the kitchen to be boxed up and left under heat lamps. After 40 additional minutes the rest of the order was boxed up with the bartender letting us know they re made the chili. We were sent home with two extremely cold and soggy sandwiches with limp cold fries. When questioned about this the bartender was extremely put out, and asked if we wanted the whole order refired. Should have said yes but we had been sitting there for over an hour at this point. She should have had the food sitting in boxes refired without prompting. You'll visit (a first time) for the food (and possibly beer and spirits selection) but come again for their customer orientation. They've recently made significant enhancements to their menu, since Chef Miguel joined the team (previously at The Capital Grille in Hartford). Don't see something on the menu you like? If so, they'll customize. If you're unhappy, say something. Very responsive group. I probably eat here more than any other restaurant in the area. Plus, "the crowd" is an eclectic mix of a who's who and best-of-the-best of Longmeadow and surrounding communities. (Updated January 9, 2023 to reflect the new menu) Here are some ideas navigating the menu. Use it as a starting point, as Max Burger handles custom orders extremely well. #1 You may initially come because of their burgers, but you may return for the tacos. There's braised pork (new, replacing carne asada), blackened chicken and shrimp options. Many people I know change the set-up (like shrimp tacos with the blackened chicken set-up). #2 The 5oz. Max Classic is more than satisfying and my go-to. It comes with a side. I usually upgrade to tots. Regardless of your choice, you will not be disappointed. Nor do you need the 8 oz. patty to be full (my opinion). Another solid basic option are the Sliders. Also, any burger or sandwich can be ordered without a bun over a salad or fries. #3 Non-burgers like the Grilled Cheese and Pulled Pork handheld are great and have surprises, with a small side of tomato soup for dipping for the former, and a build-your-own set-up with two buns for the latter. The twin dogs are by far the best hotdogs in Western Mass. I haven't had the tuna poke bowl yet, but it's on my list. I have tried the new braised beef short rib and it is awesome, especially with the horseradish whipped potatoes. #4 For a pre-dinner snack, get the Wings ninja-style, a relative value item on the menu or, my favorite, the General Tso's Cauliflower or Crispy Brussels Sprouts. There's a "secret" bar-only menu with $6 options from 3pm to 6pm. #5 Their team is THE BEST! Say hello to James (the general manager), Amanda (asst. manager) and Sarah (bar manager). Plus, the staff they employ are truly amazing and have made a real effort to get to know me and my family (and that of many other guests I've seen), notably Audrey, Charlese, Gavin, Jordan, Jess, Julia, Kasha, Michelle, Nate, Savannah and many more. Kids love this place. The portions are large and the presentation kid-friendly. Max-and-Cheese was a favorite of my son's, when he was younger. Also consider customizations, like the kids grilled cheese sandwich with avocado. A step above most kids meals. Lastly, there's WiFi here, making Max a great place for a business meeting. I really hate to give bad reviews, but this was not a good experience all around. I was so excited to take my husband and father here after going to Bright Nights in Forest Park, but this turned out to be a terrible way to end our evening escapade. Since we were out, I placed the order online through their website -- Texican with pepper jack cheese, Blackjack, and Maple Whiskey burgers with the pulled pork spring rolls. I received a confirmation email telling me the order would be ready in twenty minutes. I did not receive any texts concerning my order, nor did I receive any emails or texts following up on my order's status. We pulled up to the curbside pickup on time, and the server asked for our order. I gave my last name thinking the order would be under that. A second server quickly returned to ask if our order was under a different name, I gave her my full name and my husband's full name because we used his card while my husband leaned over and showed her his phone with the order information on the screen. The first server came out again and tersely said they still could not find our order. She asked what was in the order, we recited the information, and as the server whipped around to re-enter the restaurant, I asked if the order number would help. By that point, she was halfway through the door as she curtly responded, "No." Each time the servers came up to our car they became more and more rude. Luckily for us, fourth time was the charm, they found our order, and we headed home to devour it. Not so fortunate for us, the food was quite salty. All three burgers and the "spring rolls" were too salty. I took one bite of our coleslaw and threw it out. It was like tasting a spoonful of salt. Interestingly, the fries did not taste as if they were salted. Maybe someone salted all the other food twice and forgot the fries? More likely the other food was so salty, the fries couldn't compare. On top of the saltiness, none of our burgers came with the pickle that is supposed to come on the side, and the "spring rolls" were left in the fryer so long their wrappers started to burn. Not that it really matters, but the pulled pork "spring rolls" are actually eggrolls. Normally, I would overlook something like that, but on top of everything else, it just proves the chefs or whoever designed the menu doesn't pay attention to the difference between a rice wrapper versus a flour and egg based wrapper. Good thing we don't have any egg allergies. Overall, I cannot recommend this place, which is a super bummer because so many people rave about it. Haven't been to this Max Burger in a few years, so we were due for a return visit. They recently have changed their menu so we tried one of the new creations, French Onion open faced burger, which had a nice flavor but presentation was way off by having the bread much larger than the patty. The side of au jus was a nice touch as well (but a crock with a pour spout would've been helpful). Sweet potato fries were deliciously crispy. Hubby had the bacon onion smash-- also great flavor but felt that the burger was on the small side, in comparison to Plan B burgers.
