This is a good place for comfort food but the portions are way too big. Maxie's is always crowded so we went early (5:30) to avoid the line. They start you off with a basket of cornbread which is delicious but if you're like me and have no self control, fills you up before the meal. I split a full rack of baby back ribs with someone in my party and another one of us had the brisket. The ribs came with Mac and Cheese, which was the best part, beans (also good) and an arugula salad that I wasn't crazy about. There was something off about the dressing. Overall the meal was great but the portion size is annoyingly large. I get how it could be a positive to have leftovers, but I hate feeling like I ate too much, and you definitely leave Maxie's knowing you overdid it. Maxie's is a wonderful little spot just outside the city. We started off with the NOLA grilled oysters appetizer, and damn it was yummy. So buttery and flavorful. Matt says they are very "fuego." I ordered the pulled-pork sandwich and replaced the sides with mac and cheese. My plate was stuffed and so was I. The mac was thick and creamy and the bbq sauce had some complex flavors. Our food arrived before we had even finished the appetizer-but it was a Monday, so it made sense. We sat upstairs, which was very romantic and spacious. Edie was our server and we loved her. This is another one of my absolute favorite restaurant's in the city. Visit here at least twice a month. Fat Tuesday and derby day are must attends!!! Staff is always friendly in welcoming us back and also making our evening pleasurable. Never be afraid to ask. These people are very knowledgeable and ready to explain or accommodate. Brisket is the best around although I sub the mac and cheese for the fries. Chicken fried chicken is my favorite dish with shrimp and grits a close second. Happy hour is also killer with 1 dollar oysters. After 6 the price goes up to 3 so get there early. All the drinks a made nice a strong with the mint julep being my favorite. Don't leave without dessert key lime pie does the trick for me. But every dessert is good and also large enough to share. read more

I've been here twice now and absolutely love it. The food and atmosphere is great. I recommend reservations. Service is WONDERFUL, everyone was so attentive and nice! We had the raw oysters to start out which were awesome. Very fresh and I love the toppings provided for them. They have an excellent drink selection, LOTS of unique whiskey drinks. I've now tried the Jambalaya and the Pulled Pork Plate. The Jambalaya was very good. The Pulled Pork was EXCELLENT. It comes served with creamy coleslaw and Pork n' beans and the portions are LARGE. Everything was EXCELLENT. We knew what we were getting ourselves into by showing up on Fat Tuesday when Maxie's wasn't taking reservations. We ended up waiting two hours, which was just long enough to start getting hangry and a little bit antsy, but there was like music and tasty drinks to keep us occupied. Usually I'm not a fan of sweet drinks, but their hurricane was delicious. At dinner, I was lucky enough to try a plethora of items: shrimp bisque, raw oysters, crawfish popcorn, and the crab smothered skate wing (with pasta). We also had the mini king cake and the banana foster bread pudding. The oysters were some of the best I've had (in Wisconsin) and I was a big fan of the other items as well, but my favorite dish by far was the shrimp bisque. The services was great, drinks are delightful especially if you like Whiskey. Greens were too sweet and my gumbo was more rice than gumbo, broccoli and cauliflower bake was more rice than veggies. Everything had ricea bit pricey for the taste. Chicken thigh bites were great! read more

The BBQ is North Carolina style, which is acidic, whereas I'm more of a Texas BBQ kind of gal, so part of my 3/5 is because I just don't like the flavor profile. That said, my fiancé who has had BBQ in North Carolina said this fell short even within that style, which may be why 7 out of the 8 people in our party didn't find the food tasty. My wife wanted "the best crab cakes in Milwaukee". This place kept coming up, and while crab cakes are more of an east coast thing, we both love cajun/creole food so it seemed like the perfect place to try. Atmosphere is interesting. Black ceiling, chandeliers, blood red walls. Friendly staff. Theme seems to be various on cajun staples with some other soul food thrown in. We started with drinks. I got a hurricane, and my wife got the Maxie 75. They were strong, which they better be for $8 for small glasses. But delicious. I tried the seafood gumbo. It was good, but not memorable. Needed lots of hot sauce. For appetizers I had wings and my wife had crawfish bites. The crawfish bites tasted fresh but were a bit chewier than normal. They came with a remoulade that was a bit more mustardy than we are used to. The wings were very interesting. Extremely think breading, and then a sweet, almost Nashville style sauce. I really liked them but wanted to save room for other things so I ate two and took the rest home. Unfortunately they did not keep AT ALL-- by the time we got home the breading had turned to mush. No clue how they could ever sell these for takeout. My wife got the crabcakes, and while they were strangely burnt looking, they were exactly what she wanted. They came with red beans & rice, which she added sausage to. I got shrimp and grits, and it was pretty standard for good cajun shrimp and grits. I would definitely get them again. I also got an order of cajun BBQ shrimp to go, as I love cajun BBQ shrimp. They werent bad, but they were nothing like the BBQ shrimp of New Orleans. I was disappointed. For dessert, my wife got caramel apple cheesecake and I got pumpkin pecan bread pudding. I'm not wild about pumpkin stuff besides pie, but the bread pudding was AMAZING. Update! After expressing my dissatisfaction with my first visit to Maxie's I returned for a second opinion. I must say, I am SO GLAD I did. There is a second floor to Maxie's which has a cozy atmosphere (first floor is open with high ceilings, second floor is standard height with fun lighting and decor). Service was night and day. First visit our service was adequate. Second visit was so much better. Our server was very friendly and a good amount of attentive. The first time around we ordered the Frogmore Stew and the Catfish Po'boy and found them both to be a big let down. I was informed later that there is both a crawfish and oyster option for the po'boy upon request. Now we're talking I returned to try my favorite Cajun entree and was NOT disappointed. The crawfish had great seasoning and was deep fried to a nice golden brown. I don't think I set my sandwich down more than twice. Would definitely recommend a visit here for the crawfish po'boy! read more

Being a fan of their sister restaurants I was looking forward to trying Maxie's. Unfortunately, I was super disappointed with the food. I got the pulled pork which had a vinegar style bbq sauce but it was so overwhelming I coughed nearly every time I took a bite. Fries were very plain on their own and didnt taste like they'd been seasoned at all. Coleslaw was good. My dining partner got the baby back ribs and said they were on the dry side. The side salad with arugula and corn was tasty as well as the corn bread brought free to the table. For the price, I was just not happy. Drinks and service were very good. Fun place to stop by on a quick trip to Milwaukee. We were looking for a BBQ place, and Maxie's does that, but also is into Cajun cuisine. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and recommended the corn salad and the mac and cheese, and both were tasty. We went in between lunch and dinner time, so it was fairly quite, but it look like the place can get pretty packed. The food came in a timely fashion, and definitely satisfied our craving. We had the peel n eat ship, which come cold (surprise to me); and they were good, but expensive for the quantity we got. Amazing is all I can say. We loved every dish we had: - Catfish shareable special with grits and spinach. The spinach put it over the top. Absolutely delicious, a little spicy. So good! And the spicy honey drizzle on the entire dish took it ice the top. - Crab cake app...oh my goodness. Fresh. No fishiness. Served over a bed of coke slaw that was perfection! - Pulled pork flatbread showed they know what to do with BBQ. And the dough was great too! - Cornbread at the beginning was divine. My coworker and I Decided to give this place a try on a Friday evening. First off, there is not parking lot so you will be parking in the street. Our waitress was Madison and she awesome and very attentive. When we arrived, we started off with their happy hour (4-6pm) we ordered 6 oysters, they were $1 each. Also had a beer to drink as well. The oysters were great! They came with a few different sauce and a slice of lemon. We ended up with 3 orders of oysters. So I had a cup of their clam chowder but tomato base soup, it was actually really good. I then ordered the half rack of St. Louis ribs, which came with fries, bbq beans, and a salad. I thought the ribs were good, I'm used to having smoke ribs but maxies ribs are heavy coated with a sauce, and the meat was very tender. They also brought us some cornbread and citrus butter. That was amazing! I would definitely recommend this place, it does get a bit loud in there from people chatting but i had a great time as well. Came here for oyster happy hour and takeout food for the family. Oysters are $1 each. Most are good but I had one that's not fresh and tasted very fishy. That stopped me from ordering more. I would give 3 stars for the food, but the bartender there was so amazing that made me want to come back. When she got our takeout bag, she checked every item in the bag, and went back to the kitchen to sort out whatever problems she found. Then she gave us a nicely organized takeout bag, and explained what sauce was for which dish. She totally went above and beyond to provide excellent customer service. We had a GREAT time at Maxie's! We have lived in tosa for 6 years and haven't gotten around to eating here - we are super sad it took us this long! We sat at the bar on a busy Friday night, right before their Kentucky derby party. The bartenders were awesome - it was a pleasure chatting with them. I've been wanting to try Maxis for a very long time. And I was looking at it on my Yelp list, and yesterday was the day that we finally went to celebrate my husband's birthday. They do not take reservations, but we arrived for happy hour. Which I believe are between the hours of four and 6 PM every day. We just started off with the raw oysters, and the peel and eat shrimp. First let me say, that everyone that we had encountered there was beyond fabulous. I wanted to take a look around upstairs to take some pictures, and was given a tour by a young gentleman, I wish I could remember his name. He was amazing. He told me the whole history of the building, which used to be a grocery store and butcher shop. And about the apartment upstairs where the family who ran the grocery store lived . There was a lounge and another bar, as well as additional seating. . As a sidenote, I love how they used the doors from the apartment as partitions and as Decor. I admire any business that will save anything from a buildings past, which I feel is important and also very interesting. Back downstairs to enjoy our oysters and shrimp, we also had a few glasses of wine, but, every Wednesday they give you $10 off any bottle of wine of your choosing. Next time I'm coming prepared to drink more wine. My husband ordered The wild Atlantic hake fish. Which I had never heard of, but it was amazing. It was like butter. Very mild, very sweet, I highly recommend it if you like fish. I ordered the vegetarian jambalaya. It was amazing. Our server also brought to our table cornbread and butter. Arron, our server was very informative and gracious. I have never had such good service anywhere. Everyone that waited on us was so attentive. My water glass was never even half empty. Which for some reason I love. And, because I had mentioned in passing earlier in the evening that it was my husband's birthday, they brought out a beautiful red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting free of charge. Complete with a candle. Our experience at Maxis was exceptional. By the time we had left, the place is filling up. I'm sure it gets crazy on the weekend, but one of the servers told us that if you call ahead say, by half an hour, they will put you on the list. This is good information to know! Maxies has been one of our go-to places when my parents come to visit for at least 4 years now. I almost always go with a Turbo Dog to drink and a half rack of baby back ribs with the standard sides. We went again with my parents this past weekend, and while the service was top notch as always, I was a bit disappointed by the food and drink quality this latest visit. The beer had an off flavor, which is usually associated with dirty lines. The fries were limp, and the food just felt mass produced in a way that it never used to. The ribs we'rent bad, and I definitely ate all the food on my plate, but I wasn't blown away like I usually am. My mom had mentioned that we were out celebrating my wife's birthday, and the waiter kindly brought a nice sized piece of cake and some fresh forks for the table. We will definately be back, but hoping the food quality gets back to great, and may be purchasing bottled drinks from now on. read more
