When I asked about Crawfish and Crab legs I was told they didn't have any anymore. Service was poor likely because of the language barrier. My wife and went there this afternoon to get some chicken wings and other meats for dinner. When we got home my wife open the bag of chicken, whooofffff. It smelled so bad. My wife noticed some freezer burn and she stated that is the smell from defrosted and refrozen chicken. The attendants were not very helpful either when we asked about where some specific seasonal vegetables were. My wife even tried asking in Vietnamese, still no help. The attendant brushed her off and continued to do his work. We WILL NOT be coming back and I hope people read this and learn from this post. read more

Relatively clean supermarket offering mostly Asian grocery items. Their seafood and meat is average relative to pricing. Depending on the season, you can score a large bag of oysters for $60 or so. The produce section is plentiful offering a wide range of greens to compliment any Asian dish. The store clerks predominately speak Chinese or Vietnamese so it's hard to ask them where things are at in English. I have found showing pictures from Google off your phone is helpful. The cashiers are rarely ever nice. No smiles. They just want to move you out of their line. Adding an extra star because it has been a convenient place to shop for my husband and I -- we can generally find what we are looking for in one visit rather than having to visit several stores. read more

It's small and the cleanliness is questionable but for perishables and basic needs I come here when I am in the area; especially when I lived in South San Jose. I wouldn't purchase meat and poultry here because there isn't a variety but the vegetables are fresh. I have come here in the past to buy ingredients for bun rieu, banh xeo, pho xao, dau huu kho, bun thit nuong, and the likes.. they do offer fresh baked items in the front like banh tieu and dau cha quay. They even sell cha lua on a shelf w/ the rice noodles by the rice! Oh yeah, if you are a fan of dau huu duong.. they have it at the register. Friendly cashiers. I have never had a problem. read more

I am a regular customer here because it's close by my place. I love the layout of market: simple, clean, and easy to find things. For the last several times I bought pork here, the pork was old and had weird smell when I boiled it. I ended up throwing all away. Fish and vegetables are good. I come here because of convenience. It's close to my workplace. It has pretty fresh fruits, but no strawberries. I would say it's relatively cheaper than Safeway in terms of fruits. And a bit cleaner than most Asian supermarkets. I always come whenever my mom wants me to buy something from the market for a quickie. ;) Not what you're thinking. A typical Chinese/Vietnamese market! People minded their own businesses and I was left unbothered. Had everything from Arizona can drinks to fish and meat! They also had frozen Durian and many other goodies! Came by to buy a fresh coconut and some seaweed snacks! Total came out to $5! Not bad considering the coconut was very sweet and yummy and seaweed gave it a good crunch! read more

The seafood counter guy was ignoring and skipping him and finally my husband just asked he had a certain fish, and he yelled NO! Never has he ever experienced such rude service at a market! Place is similar to Ranch 99 and Lion Markets in that it offers those hard to find asian ingredients and frozen, prepared foods. One thing that's good about this place is that its not as busy as the other markets but it does have the same unpleasant smells of fish, meats, etc. like when you go to chinatown. read more

Shady business practices, and they lie to their customers. Went grocery shopping during covid19 and California no longer charges $0.10 per bag during the pandemic. They lied and said they can now charge for bags, but said wouldn't charge me because I didn't know. They still charged the $0.10, even after I pointed out the mistake on the receipt. They tried to defend themselves and called me stupid and stubborn for not believing them. I don't care about the $0.10, it about the principle. read more

Used to shop here a lot in the past several years, but my recent experiences were bad. At the meat section, they do not have a numbering system. One day there was only one guy serving a lady ahead of me. He saw me waiting. Other people started walking up. I was expecting the butcher to serve me next, but he started taking orders from other Vietnamese lady, totally ignoring me. I tried getting his attention, but since I don't speak Vietnamese, he didn't even look up. I was going to wait for a little, but this lady was getting many meat items that I gave up. I asked the cashier that I wanted to talk to the manager. She pointed to a guy nearby. I started talking to him, but he couldn't understand English. He pointed to another cashier. I told her what happened and asked that they implement a numbering system. She said ok, ok, sorry, but not in a sincere way. On my recent shopping there, after a cashier lady finished the shopper ahead, she ran to the other counter to take care of 2-3 people buying lotto or medicine. Then, she pushed carts outside. She finally returned and started ringing items, but the stupid cashier system ringing 30 times for one item, having to get another cashier to cancel, then started over but the cashier system kept hanging up, some items were not coded correctly requiring other cashier's assistance. I was so frustrated and fed up. All along, the cashier was mumbling something, but had no regards to me. Noticed that some of the produces looked stale and old. Seafood section smelled awful, worse than before. Homeless people hung around in the parking lot and lots of litters. I will shop at other Asian grocery stores. read more

For an Asian market with predominantly Chinese groceries, this new supermarket is on the clean side with a wider variety of Asian (non-Chinese) groceries than most Chinese supermarkets. It seems comparable to your 99 Ranch and Marina with some brands that I haven't noticed at those markets. They have an in-store Sogo Bakery (but otherwise have few fresh bakery items) and a Chinese deli section with BBQ items (pig, duck, etc.), won ton soup, dim sum, three types of congee (including pork w/ preserved egg, $2.99), Chinese steamed buns and other cooked items. At the back of the store they have a meat department and fish department (and fish tanks) with a fish cleaning & frying service. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of Japanese ice cream treats, frozen meals, and natto they have, including the fish-shaped treats that I like with vanilla ice cream and red bean inside. They also have Japanese cakes and mochi. The Pocky selection isn't that good but the candy and cookie sections are sizeable. There's a decent selection of Korean frozen dumplings and kim chee. Indians will find a wide selection of frozen roti. They also carry Indonesian and Filipino grocery items. The ramen/dried noodle aisle seemed quite comprehensive. You can also buy pots and pans, beauty items and plants that every Asian household should have (e.g., bamboo and orchids). They do package some of the vegetables and fruits (argh) forcing you to buy more than you really want but this seems like a common practice at Asian grocery stores these days. They carry frozen durian. You can get fresh soy milk here but no fresh, locally made mochi. Among my interesting finds were: * Hello Boss canned coffee, 59 cents. Looks like a Taiwanese knockoff of the Japanese Suntory Boss Coffee brand. If it's decent, I'll try the other varieties including the milk tea. It's at least $2 cheaper than the real thing and larger too. * Chinese frozen won tons and dumplings from On On Food in Oakland - never tried this brand before but the dumplings looked good as in plump (the packaging is clear). Update: I tried them (chicken & cabbage potstickers). They're better than average. The skins are extra thick (probably too thick). The filling is tasty though not that juicy - the pork kind might be much juicier. It's nice to see the cabbage bits. They use MSG. * Weh Heng fresh tofu from Sacramento - also a new (new to me that is) brand to try * Frozen spicy beef noodle soup (Chinese), they also had a non-spicy version, $1.99 read more

Currently standing here waiting for the butcher lady to chop up all the meat I purchased. This is probably the sweetest and most hard working lady I have came across lately. Her service alone would warrant 5 stars; however, as I was waiting, the owners of this store came over to her twice to b/tch about how there are customers waiting behind me and that she needs to hurry. FIRST OFF, they didn't even bother to acknowledge that she was working on a big order. (I got a roast duck, 2 lbs of pork, and a soy sauce chicken. That's a lot to chop.) SECOND, the people behind me were waiting to purchase the ready made food under the heat lamps. They didn't need the cutting board or anything. All they had to do was scoop, measure, and ring them up. Yet, they didn't want to help her. I'm so torn because I can get this stuff at Lion. I come here because she is pleasant and helpful. I know that many people come here because of her. She brings this market business. They need to realize that before they lose their best employee. I use to look forward to coming here. Maxim is , relatively, one of the cleaner Asian markets around, though its decidedly un-Western dinginess is still enough to set off a Mysophobic's panic response. And yes, the place has a tendency to waft like hot breath on a Saturday morn after a Friday bender... ... but as far as groceries go for Southeast Asian food gourmands, the stock is wide and the prices are very affordable. So, the next time I'm cooking up a "feed an army" portion of Sinigang* for the girl-friends, Maxim's a one-stop shop for every ingredient. This market is so lively. It's fun just to walk around and look at all the merchandise. I want to buy sooooooo many treats and snacks here! They even sell large containers of jelly and boba so you can make your own drinks :D Truth be told don't shop here unless your Asian or bring someone who is with you. Preferably Viet because they won't be able to help you if you don't speak Vietnamese. Luckily my hubby is Viet ^^ I would also recommend on being extremely careful on what foods you buy from here. If i had to choose an asian market to go to, Maxim would probably be top 3. Although it aint no Hankook, its probably cleaner than most asian markets in san jose. Yes you do get the whiff of the funk here as well, but its not as bad as the others. It even has a lil deli inside so you can buy your roasted duck, xa xiu (bbq pork), or rice plates if you wish. Its located away from the crackin Tully Rd in a little plaza so its not that bad coming here. Parking is a lil weird tho... I came here yesterday because i was out of coffee and needed my caffeine fix. Got dropped off in the front since there was no parking, ran in, grabbed my 5 bags of Vina (SO GOOD!) and got in line to pay. This market has been here for quite some time. A new maxim is opened on story road. This location is in an Asian plaza which means a lot of cautious/bad drivers. The parking lot is a decent size. The entry and exit doors are separate. This market is sort of cramp. I don't normally shop here but I came here for their crayfish. For about $4.69/lb, they had some nice huge live crawfish. I got a bag and started picking which ones I wanted. At a point, I asked the man working the seafood to see how much it weighs, then I told him I wanted to go get more. He was very patient and went in the order of whoever approached the counter first. He asked what I was doing with the crawfish because he wanted to recommend a Cajun seasoning broil mix.
