My friend and I were having a late breakfast. This place is an old fashion cafe with a steady flow of customers. We were seated right away, and out drink order was taken quickly. We also placed our order at the same time. , Our food came 30 mins later, the restaurant could of used another waitress as we only saw our twice. No 2nd coffee offered. I ordered the banana bread french toast ,I received 3 pieces with real maple syrup . The banana bread was very sweet and the french toast aspect didn't really work with this type of bread. Breakfast as if it was made for me. On our way skiing, we popped in here for brunch. I'm a little hard to please when it comes to breakfast as I'm a pescatarian who doesn't like eggs. The Potato Verde is the dish I wish all places had - potatoes, cheese, green chilies, salsa with the option of eggs as an add on. My husband isn't nearly as picky and ordered the eggs benedict. So why not 4 stars? A few things could be tightened up. First, the salsa was of the Old El Paso caliber. Something more authentic would kick it up a notch. Second, while friendly, service was slow. There was a decent wait to be seated because there was one person front of house. I also ordered an English muffin that never arrived even after a reminder. Fortunately it was also left off the bill. Maxi's was a wonderful choice for our first meal in Vermont. It was easy to get to from the airport (if a bit of a long drive) and walking up it was the cutest, most darling place to see. Made my New England in the early autumn, late summer dreams come true. We walked in and we seated right away. There wasn't too big of a crowd on a Thursday at 11am but most of the tables were taken. Our server was friendly and made sure to check in on us when appropriate. The food was really good. I mean I can honestly say that corned beef hash was some of the best I've had and it wasn't even that special. It's just how they made sure to really get it flat and crisp it up. Yum, yum! Great stop for breakfast and especially pancakes if you are on a visit to Vermont like us. We were so happy to have tried some Vermont maple syrup before our drive to Boston. I paired my plate with a cup of hot Vermont cider that was cozy and delicious. Service was a bit understaffed for the breakfast rush having one person manning most of the dining room. However he was very kind. We ordered a second side of bacon for my boyfriend's pancakes and alerted the server of the same. He apologized and said that he would get it to us but it never came during the time it took us to finish our meals. I will say that one side of bacon ($4) might be enough for two depending on how hungry you are. Came on a Tuesday and the line was out the door. Probably because so many other places are closed on Monday/Tuesday. Only waited about 15 minutes for a table. The food was decent- average- so-so. I would probably give it 3.5 stars if it wasn't for the horrid service. My breakfast burrito tasted good but the potatoes were cold. This is one of those places where they act like they are doing you a favor by serving you! Service was very slow! The older man who was our server could not have been less interested if he tried. After several minutes, the other two adults were served and one child. The last child's meal came *20 minutes* after the rest. This restaurant seems like a local favorite. There were a lot of people in the restaurant hanging out chatting after their breakfast. Our server was named Beth, and was outstanding at her job provided service with a smile, and even suggested a water when we were finishing up our breakfast. This was the best breakfast we had in Vermont. Maybe the best meal... Bloody Mary was bomb and spicy the home fries are like thick cut potato wedges chloes breakfast pancakes - get these! Two pancakes that are done with a fried egg in the middle of each of them. Sausage or bacon mixed in the pancake batter. Then they are served on top of each other, with Vermont cheddar melted on top. Just a perfect storm of events and circumstances at the place I was staying - an overhead light that didn't work, a bathroom door that wouldn't close, a toilet that fully flushed and THEN returned everything to the bowl and a non-existent breakfast. Hence the walk to Maxi's which had all the local charm my B & B was missing. Huge portions for breakfast! Home fries were first-rate, and everything else was as advertised. Real maple syrup and Green Mountain Coffee are pretty standard in this part of the world, but still a nice touch.
