Could've been great... I ordered the huevos rancheros. The flavor was good, but the hot eggs were topped with cold salsa and the potatoes on the side were delicious, but also cold.

The food here is delicious and the staff are very welcoming! The homemade biscuits make for a great breakfast sandwich (which is served all day!). The chicken tenders are also homemade and great too! I will definitely stop in anytime I'm in the area

Maxi's was a wonderful choice for our first meal in Vermont. It was easy to get to from the airport (if a bit of a long drive) and walking up it was the cutest, most darling place to see. Made my New England in the early autumn, late summer dreams come true. We walked in and we seated right away. There wasn't too big of a crowd on a Thursday at 11am but most of the tables were taken. Our server was friendly and made sure to check in on us when appropriate. The food was really good. I mean I can honestly say that corned beef hash was some of the best I've had and it wasn't even that special. It's just how they made sure to really get it flat and crisp it up. Yum, yum! Those house-made biscuits though. The stuff of dreams. Pillow-y soft on the inside but crusty and crunchy on the outside. I could have one of those everyday. Would I come here again if in the area? Heck yeah!!!

Banana Pancakes with a side of bacon

Great stop for breakfast and especially pancakes if you are on a visit to Vermont like us. We were so happy to have tried some Vermont maple syrup before our drive to Boston. I paired my plate with a cup of hot Vermont cider that was cozy and delicious. Service was a bit understaffed for the breakfast rush having one person manning most of the dining room. However he was very kind. We ordered a second side of bacon for my boyfriend's pancakes and alerted the server of the same. He apologized and said that he would get it to us but it never came during the time it took us to finish our meals. I will say that one side of bacon ($4) might be enough for two depending on how hungry you are. We were stuffed by the time we were done after eating our huge pancake and sharing one order of bacon.

Omg!!! I would come here every week if I could. I love breakfast food & this place exceeded my expectations. I had a pancake sandwich (basically) & it was heavenly!!! The maple syrup added the perfect amount of sweetness to the savory pancakes with egg, bacon & cheese. I can rave about this meal forever, it was so delicious. Please come here! My friends had biscuits, French toast, pancakes, sausage links, which they said were all very delicious as well. This place is like a small diner but the flavors were to die for. Our server wasn't too nice & it almost felt like she was acting that way because she knew we weren't from VT, but who knows... come here for the food not the service!

    Roast Red Pepper Soup. Excellent!

Solid as can be! From greeting, to seating, service, ordering, kitchen efficiency, food quality and flavor, Maxi's is a hidden county gem in the rolling hills of Waterbury Vermont. What tiny outa the way diner has Roast Red Pepper Soup, "Corn Beef Pastrami ", and some of the best hand cut french fries you'll have anywhere. You heard right, Corn Beef Pastrami. They've found a supplier, perhaps locally, that's producing corn beef from the point cut, verses the leaner flat cut of the brisket. Now that neat trick elevates the Corn beef flavor to the next level. Maxi's doesn't stop there, the sandwich bread is other worldly, perhaps a gifted artisan bread maker that truly knows his or her craft is their local supplier. The Roast Red Pepper Soup was a first for me, just a wonderful flavorful blend of red pepper, chicken stock and a dash of heavy cream. Maxi's Corn Beef Pastrami sandwich rivals any New York Deli sandwich, well, maybe not in thickness but certainly in flavor and at a price you're gonna love. Don't miss this place, Maxi's is chock full of little culinary surprises!

Home fries, bacon, chicken wrap, and Oreo pancakes absolutely phenomenal

Food was solid, hash browns with green chiles, came out a little cool but they were swamped and seemed to be a tad light on staff.

I love that they're socially conscious and really care about social justice and the environment. - They compost.* My pup discovered this after we emerged from a trail next to the back of the bakery. She found all this very scientifically interesting. - They serve in house with reusable metal utensils and plates, which you return to the counter. - They're committed to sourcing organic, sustainably produced flour from a few family-run farms. - Takeout containers (and I feel awful when having to use these at times) are waxed cardboard -- maybe professionally compostable or recyclable, but I suspect not. Still, better than plastic. Eat in if you can. Someday I'll remember to bring my own containers and see if they'll use them. The bread is world class. We've probably tried almost every loaf at this point. They tend towards being traditional styles with robust crusts and a good, slow, cold rise -- breads that take time to make. Our preferences lean towards the sourdoughs, the miche-type loaves, anything with olives, and the potato breads (for those of us with old teeth or missing baby teeth). But everything you could possibly order will be amazing. We loved the beautiful pain d'epi most recently, though the 10 year old (who doesn't have a full set of chompers right now) found it tough to consume without a good dip in Mom's stew at the end of the day. The only version my family cited as more beloved was from Maison Kayser -- yes, a chain, but a very good one where my kiddos literally cut their teeth. Pastries are shockingly good as well, particularly the laminated ones that someone must be getting up at 2 or 3 a.m. to prepare. Chocolate croissants and almond croissants are perfectly layered, generously filled with high quality chocolate (real chocolate, not Nutella!) or almond paste filling that is even good when cold. The "simplest" of pastries (not really at all simple for anyone's whose tried to make these), a plain croissant, will wow a purist. My kiddos love the perfectly frosted maple bun visit after visit. Savory pastries are often filled with beautifully caramelized / browned onions, cheese, and other ingredients depending on the whims of the chefs. Again, I don't think you can go wrong; we certainly never have. There are decent sandwiches and salads on the menu (from the perspective of the spoiled). Nothing is groundbreaking, but they're 200% competent and ingredients are consistently excellent. A recent Harvest Salad, for instance, included fresh and tender butter lettuce, winter squash roasted to tender perfection, nuts and dried fruit in perfect balance. We'd had about 10 different "harvest salads", in the past few weeks in VT at that point, but though this one was more simply designed than many, it was more delicious, given the impeccably fresh, high quality ingredients. We sometimes get here on the earlier side, but never seem able to score a breakfast sandwich, which seems to sell out fast. We like the down-to-earth staff, who smile when they mean it and don't when they don't -- and show fatigue when they need to and ought. I love that the management appears to be humane, opening later than usual when an ice storm makes driving conditions perilous. We recognize some staff members from some years past and we like the continuity a lot. Love the entire picture. All of it. * I just read that all VT households and businesses are required to compost per a state law passed in 2020. Cool! Red Hen seems to have a great sorting system set up, though, with many neat, well maintained bins lined up out back.

It's always been busy when I've gone, but wait times aren't very long and the staff is pleasant. Needless to say, I got home and inhaled my turkey on a baguette. The only thing I think is a little bit of a bummer is the lack of more "traditional" topping options. I like my sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, and onion. The cafe does not offer tomatoes and only has pickled onions. Would be nice to have a little more choice when building your own sandwich. That said, I'm still a big fan and would get food from there again in a heartbeat.

The parking felt like we were parking for a huge concert. People directing, hoping to find an open spot. We finally found a small spot and decided to grab a bite before looking at the huge place across the driveway. When in Vermont, get the Vermonter. Smoked turkey, apples, cheddar, pickled onions. My daughter liked it. I got a cheeseburger with maple bourbon pickles, cheddar, onion, tomato, and lettuce. The presentation of both was really nice. Both tasted good. They ran about $13-15. We wanted to do a cider flight but the ones we wanted to try were out. The wait to order was looooooooong (more than 20 minutes) and then waiting for the food also took a while. This is not the place to go if you have limited time. After eating at the cafe, we crossed the driveway and explored the large building. Lots to buy. We decided to try the cider donut that everyone was buying. It was a tiny boring soggy donut. Not worth the wait or the $ (even though it was cheap). It was fun to watch the cider press.
