Max's is one of my favorite Jersey spots. I live in NJ, but usually go out in Philly. Max's is not a stereotypical Jersey spot. It doesn't feel like a chain restaurant. It also doesn't feel like the typical Jersey bar with fried food. I prefer to sit at the bar, which is beautiful. The bar is an antique and the whole bar atmosphere is antique and cozy. The bartenders are great and they make a good martini. There also is a decent beer selection. One of the best parts about Max's is their mussels. I think they are just as good as Monk's. I have not been to Monk's in years though, because Max's is closer and I have no problem parking. They often have 1/2 price app specials. read more

Went on a Monday for my friends birthday (basically the only ones in the restaurant so we decided to just stay at the bar. We never get to hang out anymore so wanted to go somewhere he has not been. I have been frequenting Max's for years. Started off at the bar with a couple of cocktails (manhattan and a G&T) which were made by Heather (our server as well) and she did a good job even if they did not have rye ;) We started out with 3 dozen oysters which were well prepped (cape may salts). From there we had the octopus grilled and the NOLA clams casino both were excellent with special attention to the Octopus. I then ordered a bottle of wine to complement dinner which was Cioppino with linguine and the seared tuna. Both were prepared very well except my tuna was a little cold so may have been on the rack for a while waiting for the cioppino. Desert was the house made strudel (from their German chef) and a couple of B&B's. Was a really good evening and they even sang happy b'day to my buddy! This eas our second visit to Max's. Our first visit was fantastic but tonight was less then stellar. My husband and I are beer snobs and were happy with the beer selection. Our waiter Zach was very friendly but our food took FOREVER to come out. My husband's lobster ravioli was warm (not quite cold but def not hot). My salmon was good but not the best i ever had. My daughter ordered hamburger sliders from kids menu and received a hamburger cut into quarters. Overall our experience was ok but disappointing compared to our first visit. read more

I have to say, I'm a little disappointed after seeing so many 5 star reviews for this place.. maybe I had high expectations after so many. The restaurant is really just tucked away in a residential area and you wouldn't expect it. Pros: - Service was good. The hostess was very welcoming when we walked in and the whole staff was very accommodating with the birthday dinner and helping with the surprise birthday cake. Our waitress, Laura, was attentive and came back to check how things were going. Only thing that bothered me was that we weren't told the specials for the night - shame on me for not asking too - and it turned out to be soft shell crabs since I overheard it later on in the evening. - Ambiance was nice. It was dim and good for adults, didn't see too many kids. Biggest table was probably ours which would seat about 8 people. When you first walk in you'll see a bunch of smaller tables for 2's and a bar area. - Good amount and well portioned food. Most of the entrees came with 2 sides and a house salad even though it wasn't written on the menu. - Mussel appetizer was delicious and you have the options for a few variety of flavors. I tried the white wine sauce that had good flavors and the broth wasn't too salty - great for dipping the bread in. - No need to worry about parking because they have their own small parking lot across the street and seemed to have plenty of street parking as well. Cons: - Middleneck clams were just $1, but I would've liked it if they were loosened off the shell for me. - I got the Broiled Combo but it wasn't a good choice for me, but it allowed for me to taste a few items off their menu. The entree came with flounder, bacon wrapped scallops, crabmeat stuffed shrimp, and clam casino. Good flavors in the clam casino and crabmeat stuffed shrimp. The scallops was overcooked though because I found it on the drier side and chewy. The flounder was a bit bland and I could only taste the old bay seasoning on pieces that had it. I also had tiny bones in the flounder. I think I just had a bad entree though because other entrees at the table looked more flavorful and appetizing than my dish. I have been going to Max's since it reopened a few years back. Every time I go it impresses me more and more. In the old days it was a family dive that was the place to go in Gloucester City if you wanted Mussels and beer. Today you can do the same or sample the other great specialties of seafood and other Italian dishes. The crab cakes are awesome and Lisa being the vegetarian is always accommodated. The wine selection is great and the bar is a fun place to sit and wait for your table. The parking is easy with an extra lot across the street. Enjoy!!!! read more

The seafood here is as fresh as it gets. I have been here about a half a dozen times and the food is always exceptional. . Everything here is super fresh. They make a simple salad - literally just lettuce greens and a few cucumbers and tomatoes - seem crisp and delicious. The seafood is always spot on. We have had the mussels, the shrimp, (they used to have skate which was awesome), the scallops and its always be terrific. The restaurant and bar really look like they should be in a upscale neighborhood. They have a great selection of craft beers and a decent wine selection. If i lived closer, i would love to just hang out at the bar. The only down side is the service is not always as good as the food. The waitresses can be a little slow or forgetful. read more

Very disappointed in our meal tonight. Irish mussels were nothing at all what we had here previously. No cabbage or potatoes in with mussels like we had before which had been delicious. The meatballs appetizer was burned and had hot pepper in it. Not good at all. Pork porterhouse was really two pork chops which were ok but overdone . Sauce was good. Then there were cannolis which were fair at best. My favorite dessert is carrot cake but theirs was actually just a spice cake with frosting with a carrot design. All trips to Philadelphia end at Max's. It's a lovely place - all dark wood with a tin ceiling. Photos of the building from its early days are hanged on the walls. The owner is always there, always ready to chat, but never overbearing. The bar is pretty and the beer selection is great and unusual. The food, though, that's the thing. They have a great selection of mussels in various sauces - all of which are delicious, and all of which are very affordable. I generally get the specials whenever I go (about three times a year), but some mainstays of the menu worth checking out are the fried oysters, the cedar planked salmon, and the broiled seafood sampler. The prices are very reasonable - most entrees hover at the $20 range. You can't get a bad meal here, and the service is attentive without being overbearing. The memory of a saloon vaguely flutters in your mind. The name Leisinger, however, rings foreign to your ears and to your gauze-like brain. "Leisinger," you croak. "Sounds Swiss. Austrian, possibly." "It lives," a female voice intones, further away. "For a while there it was touch-and-go." Your arm itches. "German, uh, actually," a third voice says softly. Close to the ear this time. You move your left arm, somewhat heavier than usual, to attend to your itch. "Ah," Close Voice impedes. "Give me just another minute. I.V. line." "Fourteen milliliters," you hear from Female Voice. Clarity returns to your mind with vigilance. The eye moves, the brain records. You are in a vacant lot, seated on hard sand - maybe clay - with your back against what feels like heavy iron. You cough again. It's dusk and you're cold. It's probably fall. Sans jacket, rasping like a lung case, you stand and walk out into the street. You are at the southern end of an intersection, but the roads are empty. Vacant lots, rotten squares of dirt and urban offal, straddle you. Across the intersection are row homes, packed tightly. They look like a corpse's teeth. You almost chuckle, but a cough suffices. You look at your palm: flakes of blood. A building to the east of the row homes catches your eye. The streets are mostly dark and vacant, but the building is festooned with multicolored lights. It's lit up like Christmas. You head toward this building and it isn't until you're closer that you realize that the building, beautifully built with brick and plate glass, is as empty as the streets. Slumped against the brick exterior, you look up at the lights, beautifully lit through the fine glass. The halo of color begins to envelop you. However, the place has been restored and it is now what a great local eatery should be. The real draw here is the food, and it is excellent. Don't be fooled by the Gloucester city denizens lurking this bar's perimeter. This place is a shining beacon of class piercing through a somber town of dregs. Happy hour menu is reasonably priced and changes occasionally. Draft beers are unique and change a lot. Recommend: mussels, oysters, long hots. Wings are surprisingly great as well. Pass on anything related to tacos. They seem to not keep the same staff for more than a month or two. Not sure why, the bar tenders seem happy when working. Overall, this is a great little spot that will surprise you if your expectations aren't through the roof. read more

I normally visit Max's with my co-workers for lunch and it is always good, never disappointing. However, last night was my first visit to Max's for dinner. I can't believe it took me this long to eat a dinner here because it was outstanding and the best meal at a restaurant that I have had in quite a while. I had the special which was bacon-wrapped monkfish with braised Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes and it was excellent. The fish was cooked perfectly and the Brussels sprouts were the best I ever had. My lover had the crab cakes which were also first-rate. The wait staff were very polite and professional. An added surprising touch was when the chef came out of the kitchen to check on us and to ask if we were enjoying the meal. Afterwards we sat at the quaint little bar at the front of the restaurant to enjoy an after dinner drink. The bartender was professional and accommodating, but not overbearing which is exactly how we like our bartenders. Some locals were also enjoying a drink and engaged us in friendly conversation. On my way to the restaurant I knew that I would enjoy the meal because of all the satisfying lunches I have had there. However, the meal exceeded my expectations and it added to what developed into a beautiful evening out with my favorite person in the world. We had a great meal here a few weeks ago and figured we'd go back over the holiday weekend. We even called to confirm they would be open, making a reservation over the phone. But when we showed up, we found the door locked, with people clearly inside (and what appeared to be a party through the windows). No one answered when we knocked, there was no sign on the door, and no one answered the phone. If something changed, a courtesy call to cancel the reservation would have been nice. This place clearly doesn't respect its customers or know how to run a professional business. We won't be back. read more

Love going to this place.... Nice place to go on a date. It sits on the corner in the middle of Gloucester. There is a little lot caddy-corner from the place where you can park, otherwise it is street parking. The bar is an antique one and is a nice, cozy place to wait for a table or have a few drinks. Throughout the restaurant, there are saloon permits on the walls for Max's from the early 1900's, which is pretty cool. And one New Years I went there for dinner and ate downstairs in the wine cellar area. That was fun as well. Now onto the food!! They have an EXCELLENT wine selection. It is also one of my favorite places for Mussels!! Their thai mussels are delicious!!! They are a great way to start your meal. I have never had a bad meal here. Their seafood is probably what they are most known for, so that is always a good option. But there chicken and steaks are tasty as well. Service is great and they time everything well. The famous Mussels were great, I ordered the Thai flavor and the broth was wonderful. Crab soup was very good. This place was recommended to me on a whim. The area was a little sketch but gave it a shot. Well worth it! The vibe is so cool. A polished English pub style. The service was attentive and sweet. The food was on point. Mon tues and Wed are all day buck a shuck oysters. The oysters were awesome. No shell and the homemade mignonette was delicious. Came to the bar for beer and apps before an Eagles game and enjoyed friendly service and a great ambiance. The bar's vintage feel really made for a great setting to enjoy a quick drink. A number of items on the menu were not available. Wife's meal was stated to being served on cavatelli, but plate arrived served on linguine. I'm really not sure about the positive reviews but this place was REALLY not what I expected. The great reviews had to be locals or friends of the owner. The food was mediocre at best which took a really long time. And the service was also extremely slow. I wouldn't go back. I really wanted to like this restaurant with their old German bar that the owner I believe was trying to explain to me.. He smelled like he downed a whole bottle of vodka and was slurring his speech. We made a reservation for 3 to take my Mother in-law out for her 99 th birthday. We arrived at 5 pm the restaurant was empty which I thought great. Well not so much. We started out with a few drinks to toast her birthday My wife and mother-in-law ordered gin and tonic and for me a bourbon and water . Well they ended up with cranberry and seltzer no gin. Mine was fine . Finally got it right after 15 minutes .Amy our server was no were to be found for another drink I went to bar myself. I was very displeased with the menu selection. I was expecting clams on the half shell and much much more. I was given a bar menu and asked for more of a selection. I was then given a lunch menu. I ordered Caesar Salad and it was poorly prepared. The lettuce was shredded into tiny pieces and their weren't any croutons. I then ordered a surf and turf sandwich which was not appetizing at all. It had a weird off smell to it. I didn't complain about anything while I was there. It should have been obvious to the restaurant owners that it's heavily lacking. Good God, Ups and downs. Lets start back in 2010, the 1st time I went to Max's, the food was good, the service so so and the cleanliness was god awful. A friend suggested that we go to this place in Gloucester City one night after work, I hesitantly agreed. I didn't think that a 5 star restaurant would exist in that "under the Walt Whitman Bridge" town. But my friend raved about the place having gone there a few months prior. So we show up and wait about 20 minutes too long to get our appetizers, the waiters/staff all seemed more content on playing on their phones rather than attending to the customers. Not responsive to requests about refilling beverages and in general didn't seem to value their job. While waiting I went to the restroom and it looked like it hasn't been cleaned since the early 1900's, returning to my table i hoped to have the food there but my friend confirmed there was no hope in redeeming this night. Long story short, the food finally arrives, which tasted really great, but the wait.....ugh.. Flash forward to early 2014, another friend suggested for us to go to Max's and I remember my previous visit a few years before, needless to say, I dreaded it. But I hoped that all this time they found new management or listened to their customers. Pleasing to say the least, it was clean and polished to the 9's!, the staff seemed a bit more attentive and the food was awesome!!! I honestly had no complaints and the experience was much better than the one prior. Big tip left. Flash forward one again to the weekend of the 22nd of August 2014...I had the chance to go their with a girl that I fancied and had high hopes of impressing her by going to Max's, she is a sea food fanatic. But I was once again proven wrong and had a flashback to 2010 with inferior service, a dirty eating establishment and sub par waiting time. Come on man, crumbs on the table for a new arrival and a bathroom muddied and stained? Really? Zagat reviews must be lagging. So all in all it was a yo-yo visit the 3 times that I was there so I do not think that I will go back or suggest the establishment to others due to the lack of consistency over the years. Hopefully in due time they will get better management and rise to the level that they should be, because in these uncertain economic times eating establishments do not last all that long when they do not listen to their customers. read more

Where in the hell do I even begin to do a review. This is one of the worst establishments I have ever visited. First off they we were a party of 14 and there for my brother and his wife's wedding day. Just doing an informal thing until a better reception could be had. I can't honestly blame this on the servers except for failing to check on us a little more for drinks when I had to go the bar myself to get a refill. The food service was atrocious and two people from our table waited over a half hour to get their food and their steak was burnt on the outside and raw on the inside when it was supposed to be medium. Our table wasn't the only one with this issue as we overhead another table send their steak back as well. They literally took our steak a d put it back in the oven and reserved it after we cut it. We went to Max's Seafood last night. Although we've had some great meals there over the years, something was horribly wrong. The kitchen and servers were understaffed, causing lengthy delays. It took about 1.5 hours to get two appetizers and was almost 2 hours after we sat down to get entrees. Needless to say, the kids had long since wilted. The good news is the food was still excellent. The bad news (aside from the wait) was the manager sat at the bar while this happened--no acknowledgement of the situation, no attempt to help serve, no apologies for the service until our party spoke to him directly, and no reductions on the bill (except an offer to give the kids a Cannoli for dessert, but they were already falling asleep). It'll be a long while before I gamble a rare night out on them again. read more

I took my friend here for her 50th birthday. It was during restaurant week. 4 courses for $35. What a mess. The service was terrible. When the waitress brought out our meal, we reminded her that we didn't get our salad. She wanted to bring it out and put our food (steak) back into the kitchen. Are you kidding me? We said no, to just wrap the salads, which were raw tuna, btw. What a terrible experience. OUr food was cold. The butter was not melting on top of the mashed potatoes. The place only had about 6 tables dining. And, let me say this. We sat there forever waiting for her to ask us how our meal was. She passed us at least 5 times and never made eye contact with me. When she finally did come over, she said that her manager told her to take $15 off the bill. And, she wanted to argue with us when we told her of our disappointment. Very disappointing - my wife and I went to Max's for our anniversary. Once we were seated we ordered drinks. I also asked for water. Fifteen minutes went by and nobody came over to us. Servers walked past us several times and didn't even look our way. We got up to leave and and told the manager (I guess that's who he was) that we were leaving. He asked if something was wrong and we told him. He didn't even apologize or ask us to stay (very dismissive). About 5 minutes after we left we received a text message saying that they cancelled our reservation. If they would have been as attentive to us as patrons as they were so quick to cancel our reservation , we would have stayed. Really bad business to just let somebody walk out without even trying to get them to stay, let alone receiving a text message within 5 minutes that our reservation had been cancelled. Street parking avail if small private lot gets full. Town it's located in is not the greatest so keep your belongings with you and don't forget to lock your car. Anyway. We walked in an hostess asked if we had reservations...we said no...he says it's better if we do...but seated us anyway...I did not appreciate that! You would think he would just seat us without being negative about it. It's not like they were crazy busy. There's a solo musician setting up to play live music at the bar area. nice small bar for after work drinks or happy hour. Enough chatter! We got bread with some sort of sour cream butter (unhealthy but yummo). Mussels in spicy red sauce was delish! You can choose hotness level as well as type of sauce (white, red, thai, another I can't recall). Bf got chicken gumbo...well liked and tastey. Main course for bf was broiled mix (flounder, clams casino, scallops in bacon, sweet baked potato, mixed veggie) satisfied man, no complaints. I got special of soft shell crab with tomato grits and black bean avocado salad. No complaints either! My two faves grits and ss crabs...it was win-win for me. We ended up having leftovers cause we stuffed our faces fat. Too bad we didn't have room for desserts, next time. Oh yea they have nice limited beer list. This is a nice place to bring parents, out of towners, and seafood-friendly dates! BUCK A SHUCK OYSTERS...Monday and Tuesday's!!!
