As a local, I've been coming here for decades. You still get to hear the man on the piano when you come. Beer is served nice and cold. Cocktails are available and drinks are very reasonably priced. Food is DELICIOUS! Hubby and son always have to get a bowl of chowder or stew. Hubby sometimes gets an extra to go. It's so good! Clams are my favorite. Never over cooked! The shrimp are amazing! The other night we came in for dinner, it had been a while since we came for a meal. We ate in the bar area. The service was good even with a full room. I started with the New England clam chowder followed by the whole Dungeness whole crab. My hubs got the same whole crab. The side of coleslaw is a nice added crunch. My mom said she's been coming here for years, but I don't think she ever brought me until this year. I hadn't had a good seafood meal in FOREVER (living in Colorado for the last number of years, I was wary of "fresh" seafood). I ended that drought at Cap'n Cats. We got a seafood combo. It was all pretty fresh. I really enjoyed the scallops, and that's something I've never said before. My mom loved her clam stew. For me, the real standout were the shrimp. I don't know if shrimp are caught nearby, but wherever they come from they are great quality. So flavorful. Maybe I'd forgotten what shrimp tasted like after so many years? Now that I am reminded, I want to eat shrimp more often. There's an old bar, and when we arrived there were just 3 patrons, each sitting alone enjoying a drink. By the time they left, they weren't drinking alone anymore. This is a friendly place. Prices aren't cheap, but for quality seafood I think the prices are fair. read more

We've also grabbed soup to go and that was all very tasty. I've never dined in at a table but I'm sure it's comparable! Not sure if the menu is any different. At first glance you won't think much of this rough around the edges seafood shanty somewhere in the hinterlands of southern Jersey but Cap'n Cats has more than a talking parrot on his shoulder, he has some of the best seafood around. I'm partial to the broiled flounder and scallops but he can do fresh or fried done to perfection. Don't be put off by the stuffed shark on the wall and nautical bric a brac straight from your uncle's basement. If you're looking for some great seafood in the least pretentious surroundings you can find, Cap'n Cats is waiting for you in West Deptford. Maybe if you're lucky you'll run into his cousin Cap'n Crunch drowning his sorrows at the bar. I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place... living a minute away from here, this restaurant and bar has one of my favorite items on Earth!! Smoked whiting... If you've never had it, smoked whiting is the perfect bar food... If you've ever been to a truly old school seafood bar, then this place would be perfect.. Old wood paneling. Nostalgia items nailed to the walls. A long curved wooden bar, and everything you'd expect to eat at a place like this... Surprisingly, I never think about coming in here often for a sit down meal or drinks. But when I do, I always regret not stopping in more often.. I've been eating at this place for 30 years and the quality and consistency is always above par. Some of my favorite items on the menu include the Dungeness crab legs, smoked whiting and the u-peel-em shrimps. I highly recommend visiting. I had warm jumbo crab cocktail that was scrumptious and Rockefeller oysters also yummy and I highly recommend. I ordered the mussels but they were to dry nice size mussels too. So would have been great if they were in a lemon butter or white wine sauce. It was not busy st 1pm on a Saturday. But it can get nuts on a Friday night so be prepared to wait. The decor is a bit dated, but the ambiance is relaxed and casual. The crab cakes are loaded with real crab and minimal filers. They server up a nice variety of crabs and crab legs. Ordered Takeout tonight for our family since I confirmed yesterday that they are offering it during this Horrific Covid-19. The kitchen closes at 8:30pm but they are there until 9pm to pickup. You just enter through the bar with a mask, Social Distance & pick up!! Hubby had no problems whatsoever!! Hubby ordered Fried Seafood Combo and his favorite deviled clams (which he loves their specific recipe). They made 2 Huge Deviled Clams, which he got so full that he couldn't eat the 2nd after the combo that Anthony decided to try it & he went absolutely crazy for it! Anthony said it was so creamy, he loved it!! Anthony ordered Crab Cakes (Jumbo Lump), which he said was the best he's ever had & was floored by yummy crunchy fries! (Each platter is served with a choice of a side of fries (the best crispy fries you could ever imagine, or a side of freshly steamed yummy broccoli and then everyone gets a side of coleslaw.) I ordered their Absolutely Perfectly Seasoned (light old bay) Alaskan Snow Crab for me & Catarina. It was soo perfectly steamed, came out in big long pieces, no picking at the crab !!! Then since they had them, I ordered Blue Claw Crabs Steamed in Old Bay. The very nice girl on the phone said they were #1' s, so they were $27/dozen but I never had them from Cap'n Cat's so I asked if I could order per crab. She said sure & said $2.25 each, so I ordered 4. Being there before I know that they are usually in the refrigerator section already steamed so I asked her to just give them to me cold bc that's how I prefer to eat them. No problem! Let me tell you, if I knew how delicious theirs were, I would've been ordering them for years!!!! They taste exactly how I make them!!! So AMAZING, Love, Love, Love Steamed Blue Claw Crabs!!! We visited with friends as a group of 4. We started with steamed topnecks that were a pretty good size. For my entree, I went with the broiled Salmon. If my review were based on the way my fish was cooked I would have given it a 5 star. PERFECTLY broiled and crisp on the outside yet tender on the inside and it wasnt swimming in a secret sauce or butter like many places. I was incredibly disappointed by the overly thick and unflavorful clam chowder (this is my must-order whenever available at any seafood restaurant). The service was lackluster and the adult beverage selection pitiful. We visited on a weekday and there weren't many tables seated when we arrived yet it took so long to get our drink order taken I had to go to the bar to review their options. Overall, I will likely not return and will continue to travel north to Burlington to get my seafood fix. read more

Haven't been here for a LONG time but the other day we stopped for a late lunch/early dinner. Between the three of us we had oysters on the half, both chowders, clams casino, deviled clam platter, and a daily special platter, southern fried halibut. Everything was fresh, good and served promptly. The fries were good and obviously straight out of the fryer. Peggy, our server, deserves a special mention. She seated us, took drink and food orders, served our food and I later learned she even shucked our oysters, all while handling takeout orders but we never waited for a thing. The worst server name Kate that had the nerve to say she has been working here for 5 to 6 years. She was unprofessional and didn't say her name or check until we completely finished our dinner. Did we need anything else. Then, when she came over, her coworker had already given us more water. Even though I explained the dissatisfaction and why we wouldn't be leaving a tip, she actually said, "I don't care," and walked off, then came back with the receipt. We used to enjoy coming here but never again. In addition, I just want it to be known we always tip our servers at other restaurants 20% or more if the service is satisfactory so I was really uncomfortable not leaving a tip but after her comment and the service that was not even done with a smile I will be ok soon. read more

We haven't been here in 10 yrs n thought we stop by for dinner. 1st We had to find a waitress to let them know we were here 2nd She never checked in on us to see if we needed any refills or wanted anything else from the bar. 3rd My Swordfish was undercooked, it was pink n bloody on the inside. It was Father's Day afternoon and we found ourselves along the Delaware River south of Philly with uhh ... No plans for dad (me). Ok, I will take the blame for the timing problem but still what should we do. Of course, I turned to YELP. Staring me in the eye and just a few miles from our location was this clam bar with great ratings. Might there be space ... Walking from the car to the front door the air's scent changed to OLD BAY ... made the mouth lust for seafood. There was a big thumbs up when we went inside because there was not a long wait for the dining room or we could be immediately seated in the classic divey bar. It was Father's Day so it was worth waitIng for a dining room table, which gave us the opportunity to check out the seafood to go section. When I say this is a CLAM BAR you need to know that the good Cap'n even has portholes to look into the dining area. This is not eloquence friends this is a JERSEY CLAM BAR with seafood at a sea mariner's price (INEXPENSIVE but please don't tell them because this place just was permanently added to my GPS.). I frankly loved the wood interior, old signs, and a feel that I was in a place that many have felt comfortable eating in. It's a rather simple menu of broiled or fried seafood with a few chowders (Maryland Crab, Clam (either NE or Manhattan) or SNAPPER (Remember we are about 3 miles due east from Philly so Snapper is a classic.). A nice but limited selection of brews from the tap and friendly service made a sense of completion complete. Started with the STEAMERS ... Little necks 18 for $10. READ THAT AGAIN ... And these were steamers done perfectly ... No grit and so sweet add the butter and lemon oh my!!!! Megan (She treated for Father's Day) went NE Clam Chowder and I chose the Maryland Crab Chowder. The Crab was fresh tasting, lots of crab and even a tiny shell bit or two for authenticity. The Clam Chowder was really tasty but there was floury texture that was noticeable. Ahh the arrival of the seafood fest ... First, the prices are amazingly low! If you go out for seafood within 50 miles of ATLANTIC CITY I can guarantee you'd be paying at least 50% more for the same meal. Our choices were: broiled tilapia, broiled scallops, and fried jumbo shrimp (less than $10). The meals included (Or so we were told) French fries or broccoli and coleslaw and for an up charge corn or asparagus. We did two fries and one broccoli. SEAFOOD PERFECTION .... Did I mention the great service? A very personable gentleman (The manager?) helped deliver the food, wishing me a Happy Father's Day and checking on our happiness with the meal experience; very nice ... I am not on be to order tilapia (I guess I have been influenced by this internet stories.) but Megan's tilapia was so buttery and delicious that I wanted to sneak more than my one generously offered forkful of fish. The scallops were prepared the way that is so hard to replicate in the home kitchen ... fresh and perfectly seared. My jumbo shrimp were jumbo, breaded perfectly and fried for exactly the right amount of time to result in sweet and tender shrimp! The french fries were homemade and decent. The broccoli was prepared perfectly leaving crispness and flavor and good veggieness! The coleslaw was creamy deliciousness but one, two ... Uh where was number three? The menu implied ... The initial conversation hinted ... Coleslaw comes with all platters but I guess the broiled scallops were not considered a platter. I have to say that when we pointed out the missing coleslaw to our waitress she apologized, said that the coleslaw did not come with the scallops but also offering to bring coleslaw at no charge (An offer we did not take her up on.). I will admit that if we had half stars the coleslaw issue would have dipped this review to 4 1/2 stars but my Father's Day experience was definitely more than a 4 star meal of great food and service so FIVE STARS it is. This will be a dive I come back to .... Just hoping that no one tells them that they could up their prices 25% and it would still be a bargain! read more

What a cool place this was! Walking in past the pools and icy trays of seafood into the back dining room bar area we knew we were at the best place around for good, fresh seafood. The bar area was dark and we were immediately greeted by staff who told us to grab a seat wherever we pleased. We happened to arrive during happy hour 3-6pm and domestic draft and bottles were $2.50. Our waitress pointed that out to us so we wouldn't miss out on the special since it was 5:30pm. We tried Dungeness crab legs for the first time here, and they were great! 1 pound for $18, which came out quickly and they were delicious! All in all great server- friendly and funny. Also worth noting that there is a fair amount of Coca Cola collectable vending machines in the bar area for those who enjoy. read more

This is a traditional divey seafood bar. The menu is short, sweet and too the point; SEAFOOD! My Girlfriend ordered crawfish and broccoli. I ordered the crab cakes and corn on the Cobb. It was hilarious watching my Girlfriend eat the crawfish because she has never had them before. I did not enjoy my crab cakes as much as I thought I would have. They were a little too fried for me. I eat a pretty clean diet and there was a tad too much fry oil for me. The prices are also a tad high but it is what it is. All in all I would come back here again and plan too within the next month. Local tavern specializing in seafood. Right brain and I were starving on our road trip. I CRAVED crab and a good pale ale. Maps sent us here. If you are snooty and dislike local color this is not your place. Our barmaid/sever Michelle was funny and helpful in steering us to what we craved. The place was quiet on a Wednesday night but still had locals coming into the bar. It is funky, eclectic and definitely a local waterfront style dive. Loved it! We both had crab, snow crab as the Maryland crab season was over. Paired with a nice cold Blue Moon and Sierra Nevada brew with a side of oysters - heaven needed some cracking but we were happy, satisfied and full. This was the start of our April 10, 2021 NJ Distillery Tour. You know if you're going to drink alcohol you need to eat first. This place did not disappoint. Yes it's a bar but the food was good, cooked well and the seafood was fresh with nice portions. I started with a local IPA Swoosh, very tasty brew. Followed that with chicken wings and mozzarella sticks, delicious! Also ordered: warm steamed peel & eat shrimp, flounder platter w/fries, fried clams w/broccoli, seafood combo platter (flounder, shrimp, fried clams, scallops, corn-on-the-cob). This is a hidden gem! I've almost tried just about everything on the menu. I was going so often that the bar tender knew my order. I usually get the crab soup which is delicious and hearty as an appetizer. Then I get fried shrimp with the cocktail sauce, jumbo lump crab meat with a side of butter and if it's in season I got blue claw crabs to take home. It's so good and worth the trip. read more

Cap'n Cats is the best place around for seafood in a no frills type of environment. Everything is always fresh and delicious and the prices are really good as well. We have been there a few times, and have sampled quite a bit from the menu here. The raw oysters are always a must, as is the clam chowder. Recently we tried clams casino, which was an interesting take with melted cheese on top, but we loved them! Recently for my entree I ordered blackened tuna which was fabulous. I highly recommend whatever fish special they have going on because it's always been perfect. Also, the front of the restaurant is a take out fish market situation, so there's that. You really have to be terrible for me to give a restaurant one star, because as a Chef I know anybody can have a bad meal due to various situations (hence two stars) but the food here was just not good. Now I know this place has been a local favorite for years (and the place really looks it) but retro decor aside I just don't see the attraction. My Manhattan clam chowder looked like it literally took the trip down the turnpike to our table, tasteless and "full" of potatoes. The steamed clams were gritty and dry. My entree left much to be desired as my fries were way over cooked and my coleslaw was warm. At least the butterfly shrimp were good. My guest had flounder which served up a decent portion but otherwise Ehh! Service was fair, but if you ask me they would do well to give the place a real face lift both in and out. I knew there had to be a reason I held on to this gift certificate so long. Sorry but never again. read more
