It's small and outdated, but they recently replaced the sign in front. The chicken wings here are always on point, and they got that crisp tasty batter unlike some other spots where it's stale and bland. My food arrived as if I got the last of the days left overs. My ribs were burnt. I also asked for rib with the bone and got boneless burned tips. New May May is one of the best Chinese takeout places I have been to in New York. I always order the chicken wings and pork fried rice, which is consistent and delicious every time. The chicken wings are seriously so flavorful and crunchy! One thing that disheartens me is how much shit the staff has to put up with from customers. It infuriates me how rude and dehumanizing customers speak to the staff every time I come in to order food. I know this is sadly a reality for most Chinese takeout workers, so I do think it is important to acknowledge when describing my experience at New May May. So, I decided to check out the New York City Department of Health's restaurant inspections and read something very unsettling. Good spot for abundant, hearty Chinese takeout! They have a solid lunch special that comes with an entree, soup, and white or fried rice. I often get the chicken & broccoli which has never been stellar, but a consistently decent option every time. They advertise not using MSG, but the food is actually quite heavy! The order tends to come out relatively fast (10-15 min), but I typically call it in first so that I don't have to wait when I arrive. I called for Hunan Triple Seafood and the operator told me that I had a choice of white, brown or vegetable fried rice, so I chose vegetable fried rice and also requested a Pepsi. When the delivery man brought the order, there was no Pepsi like I requested, and the only rice they provided was white rice. I was in the area hungry as hell after lecture being on my feet for 4 hours and I remember that new may may kitchen was down the block. I popped in and got General Tso's chicken. I was so hungry that I sat at one of their two tables to eat my food. The food was very good. I often substitute egg rolls and opt for spring rolls. This is often my number one sore spot about take-out Chinese kitchens-many of them don't follow directions. I'm happy to report that I received my spring roll and my food was great. The staff was actually remarkably proactive considering that it is a small takeout Chinese Kitchen. I observe their behavior with other customers and people generally like them. Every year it has just steadily gone downhill. Honestly, I think they just burned-out. Running a hole-in-the wall Chinese restaurant for 30 years is hard work. Most of the neighborhood stopped going. The only reason I had it was because my new neighbor invited us over last night. The moment I saw the menu my heart sunk. I had a taste of 3 of the 7 dishes and decided to open an account on Yelp and perform a mitzvah by warning new arrivals (like my next door neighbor) to A-VOID this place like the plague. Disclaimer: I want to say, the family who runs it are VERY NICE PEOPLE, and the rice is free, but the food is just inexcusable. 90% of the people who eat here now are kids from the projects who come for the fried chicken. My advice: don't bother with the menu. Order fried chicken (Personally I don't eat fried food). Everything on the menu is just GOD-AWFUL! (Imagine food that collects around your kitchen drain after you wash the dishes; now imagine heating it up and serving it.) The "sauces" are water with soy sauce or water with starch & MSG. Hmm, of all the different take out places I've tried in my lifetime, this place doesn't rank high on my list. I ordered the Sichuan beef with vegetables without onions. The beef ended up being strangely chewy and the sauce was actually sweet. If you've ever had Sichuan cuisine before, you know it's supposed to be spicy. Also, I ended up getting onions in my dish (I have an unfortunate intolerance to it). Usually, I check to make sure I didn't get onions, but I saw one of the cashiers (maybe owner) actively look at my box of food before closing it, so I thought he was double-checking that for me. I feel bad giving a not-so-great review because the place offered brown rice (a more rare find) and the people who worked there seem nice. Maybe it's worth trying their other dishes, but I will be trying the other take-out places nearby like Happy Family and Golden Forest. read more

Today we ordered Beef Broccoli (extra extra extra extra spicy - which turned out to be really delicious), pork fried rice (yellow rice, but not too dry like other places), and chow fun (decent amount of pork/char siu). The previous review is true of EVERYWHERE in Chinatown that is a take-out spot, but New May May is better than most. If you're looking for solid quality Chinese take-out, New May May is still one of the better places in the neighborhood. I come here for lunch very often and they always get upset when I ask to add something to my order but once I acknowledge I'm paying extra then it's ok I guess some people come in expecting free things I'm not sure. I usually get the vegetable lo mein and it's always extra oily as are the fries. The fried rice is great as is the fried chicken. Seating is limited but usually available as there usually not a big crowd in there. Compared to other restaurants it is on the cleaner side but also more costly not sure why maybe it's just the location some places give a free soda with an order of $9 - $13 this place you have to spend $21 I'm. Not sure who spends $21 and wants one free soda I'm sure if I spent $21 I'd order a 2 liter or at least two sodas already. May May is way above average for fast quality Chinese take out in the area. They've been around longer than I've lived in the LES which has been a little over 10 years. I love their special wonton soup it's not your typical over-noodly no-meat type and their mu shu is the best. Fast reliable delivery too. I've never had a problem with them except for one time they forgot my mu shu pancakes but they hightailed it back to correct the mistake when they realized it. read more

I would give them a higher rating but the people who answer the phone don't speak English very well at all, which makes for a very frustrating experience when ordering - and they don't have Seamless which would solve that problem. It's nothing fancy, but always does the trick and I find the dishes I order consistently good. When I want healthy I order broccoli with tofu steamed with brown rice (garlic sauce on the side).
