This is a great place for authentic chinese food. There is a bit of wait but we got seated sooner than we expected. The decor is on point and portions are family style. We started with egg drop soup and calamari. For mains we got sweet and sour pork, stir fried green beans, and crispy noodles with beef. Egg Drop Soup- Deliciously creamy and silky. This hits on a cold day. Calamari- Nice chewy calamari pieces with a crisp breading. You get a strong black pepper flavor that gives it a little zing. Sweet and Sour Pork- Crispy deep-fried pork pieces that were tender and juicy. The sauce is the perfect blend of sweet and tangy. Very tasty. Stir-fried Green Beans- This was wonderfully fresh. You still get a light crunch out of the beans and a garlicky finish. Crispy Noodles with Beef- Noodles were delightfully crisp with a savory sauce. The beef pieces were tender. Congee Village s a longtime chinatown staple (30 years strong!), serving family style cantonese dishes, dim sum, congee, and rice at reasonable prices. So much lap cheong (chinese sausage/臘腸) and lap yuk (chinese cured bacon/臘肉) piled on top of seasoned rice. The rice soaked up all the oil from lap cheong and the sauces. ＊Sha Cha Beef and Vermicelli in Casserole 沙茶牛肉粉絲煲 $22.95 ** Almost every table ordered a casserole, and I was surprised by how much beef they packed in. The vermicelli noodles held onto the sauce well. Easily a "rice thief" dish ＊Sampan Congee 荔灣艇仔粥 $8.50 * The congee came out boiling hot. It was velvety, and loaded with toppings like shredded duck. Congee Village has been our family's go-to for celebrations and everything in between. It's not fancy in a trendy way, but it's real. The kind of place where the tables are big and the food comes out steaming hot and unpretentious. Let's start with what they're named after: the congee. So many places thicken their porridge with cornstarch or fillers, but here it's the real deal. Silky from long simmered rice. My personal favorite is the teng-ji-jook. It's a beautifully fragrant, slightly earthy bowl of pure comfort. If you've never had it, trust me, it's worth the visit alone. But don't stop there. The beef chow fun is a classic for a reason. Wide rice noodles with wok hei, tender beef, and not oily (you can see from the bottom). It's the dish everyone enjoys and it never disappoints. For something saltier, the salted fish fried rice and the salt and pepper fried squid are highly recommended. I heard the Dungeness crab is pretty popular so it was fun to pick at it while each person has their own dipping sauce as we wait for the hot food. We also got the stir fry Chinese broccoli which had a nice crisp and wasn't overcooked. I appreciated that. The pan fried tofu worked for the vegans at the table but even the non vegans kept reaching for it. I was surprised to see pickled garlic in my sweet and sour pork. It was so nostalgic, the way my grandmother would have made it. The lamb chops were perfectly tender without being too gamey. On special occasions, we get the stir fry lobster. It's the kind of dish you'd expect at a Chinese wedding banquet. Celebratory, messy in the best way. You could build a whole feast here just from banquet classics. Pro tip: if you're rolling with a small party, book one of their private rooms with a karaoke setup. Eat, sing off key and pretend you're at a family wedding without the formalities. They have large round tables with Lazy Susans for big groups. We were here for a birthday party, and my friend called ahead to make a reservation but when we got here, they didn't have any records of the reservation! The outside and inside are two very different vibes. When looking from outside, you'd imagine this place to be a gambling den with the palm tree neon lights and ramen bowl LED sign shining down at you. However, after walking in you're welcomed with a bustling ambiance and attentive servers. I'd highly recommend coming here with a larger group of friends, so you can enjoy one of the large booths and share more of the food together. Might not be the best place for just you and your significant other. We really love this place and it gives you a warm feeling, almost like home, and we always come back whenever we're looking for some comfort food. The ideal Chinatown dinner spot. My group of 8 came on Christmas Day for the second year in a row. We called two weeks in advance to book the table, which I would recommend if you're looking for a reservation. The menu is expansive but they do it all so well. You can't go wrong with a noodle dish or the sautéed vegetables. It was a busy day so they were sold out of a few dishes when we got there at 7 pm, inlcuding the peking duck. One bowl is enough to feed an entire family. If you want to splurge a bit, I highly enjoyed the lobster sticky rice -- the flavor really infuses with the rice and each bite is so umami. A staple that I have gone to since I was little. They serve very authentic Chinese dishes and have a wide variety of items to serve, from lobster sticky rice to classic dishes like a good beef chow fun. Their dishes always hit and never misses the spot. The interior is also pretty renovated/modern with Chinese decor. Today, I tried their fried beef noodles, and they were absolutely delicious - not to mention the portions of everything as well. They were generous with the portions of the noodles and beef, which I love. The noodles were more crispy towards the bottom, but full of sauce at the top where the beef was - if you don't like the crispiness of the noodles, make sure you mix everything together well in the beginning, so the sauce is well distributed. I also LOVED the sauteed scallops - the sauce was absolutely magnificent. I loved that they were deep fried, but then stir fried a bit with the sauce to give it a bit of a kick with the sauce. I also tried their chef-special lobster sticky rice which was absolutely AMAZING. It was literally cooked to perfection, along with a lobster included in the rice as well - the only thing is that the rice is a bit sticky on the lobster itself, but that is a given for this kind of a dish. This was my second visit to Congee Village and let me tell you, their congee is amazing. If you've never tried it before (like me before my first visit) it's an amazing introduction to rice porridge. They have a good variety of options and even if something ends up being out of stock, their alternative recommendation always hits. For my most recent visit, we also got their house special chicken with garlic (half), garlic sautéed Bok choy and pork, chicken and duck congee. For three people that was VERY filling. I love coming here so much !! Their eponymous congees are so delicious and inexpensive (less than $10 for anything in this economy?) and the bustling atmosphere (coupled with authentically brusque service) is a wonderful complement to the yummy food. The restaurant itself is surprisingly large - lots of large tables suitable for hosting large groups and hallway of private rooms when you really need to go all out (and apparently at least one of them is equipped with karaoke, although I haven't had the chance to try it yet haha). Some food highlights - - cantonese sweet pancake: undescriptive name aside, this is actually SO delicious -- I order it every time I eat here.  the lightly sweet filling and the coconut flavour go so well with the crispy pancake wrapper - we always wolf this down in an instant - congee (obviously). I've tried the pork/preserved egg congee (classic), sampan congee, and mixed veggie congee. I love the pork/preserved egg one the most: not too thick or too watery, juicy and flavourful pork, and filling portion sizes. The sampan congee was a bit of a miss - hard to chew meat with lots of rubbery tendon + bland fish. Also a warning for any fellow cilantro-haters: they add cilantro as a garnish on top of the congee (!!) - scallion pancakes: generic, but tasty. I like that they were thin and crispy (a lot of Chinese restaurants in the US make them wayyy too thick for my taste) - xiaolongbao ("small juicy bun in shanghai style"): the wrappers were thick and broke easily. the fillings / broth were passable at best, not very flavourful - stewed pork with preserved vegetables: the pork slices were tasty -- savoury and tender, although definitely saltier and oilier than I would have liked. The preserved veggies that the pork sat on were *really* oily (soaking up all the oil at the bottom of the bowl) and kind of bland otherwise Price point is super solid for the quality and portion sizes, and while I'm not sure if I'd come here for general Chinese/Cantonese cuisine, their congees are hard to beat in NYC - and I'll definitely be back often :) read more

All the plates here are large and meant for sharing family-style, though I've seen plenty of small groups and couples dining in. One of our go-to's for a simple veggie dish is the "Chinese greens with black fungus", and we usually try to order at least one congee. We ate here for Chinese New Years and it was packed! We reserved several tables for approximately 30 people so we definitely added to the mass of folks dining in here. We dined "family style" which is typical for Chinese folks. Each table had a set number of dishes and what's pictured is only about half of what we got. I got too busy socializing and eating to take more photos. Even though Chinese New Years is one of their busiest days, they were very efficient and I felt the food quality didn't suffer. We ordered assorted veggie fried rice ($16.95), small juicy soup buns ($8.50), mushroom mix ($28.95), general tso's chicken ($20.95), and pork chop peking ($21.95). The food was good-but not great. I found myself really knawing on some bone when I ate the pork chop. My friends thought the rice was also unfortunately, a bit bland. Had dinner at Congee Village last night after attending the fabulous "How Asian is it?" art exhibit nearby. Note, we did not have congee, so perhaps that is truly an outstanding item on the menu. Made a reservation weeks in advance for 8pm and showed up at 8pm and checked in with the hostess. Who promptly added my name to the bottom of a very long list of parties. We ended up finally being seated at 8:45pm, so much for a reservation (maybe we were being punished for having made a reservation? or not speaking Cantonese?) We ordered: - lychee martini - 4/5, not the best I've ever had - hot and sour soup - 4/5, my dining companions really loved it but it was still just okay to me - soup dumplings - 2/5. The flavor was good, the issue is of the six dumplings only one actually had soup in it! Confusing. - pan fried pork dumplings - 4/5, these were quite good, but not amazing - scallion pancakes - 2/5, very dry preparation, not tasty at all - salt and pepper shrimp - 1/5, weirdly these looked a little and tasted sweet like a beignet or funnel cake. There were shrimp inside these puffs of dough surrounding them but nothing at all like salt and pepper shrimp or the photo of the shrimp in a shell with the light dusting of salt and pepper as we were expecting. super weird - string beans - 4/5, pretty good string beans - dungeness crab beifong style - 3/5, maybe I shouldn't have ordered it beifong style as it did not come particularly spicy or deep fried like, and I couldn't decide if the crab was fresh, some bites were a bit mealy, others tasted more fresh.
