This is a humble, no-frills diner in Mayfair. The sign out front mentions Ecuadorian food, and sure enough there are a handful of those specialties on the menu, like guato/guatita. I will be sure to try those next time. The interior felt like it was from the 60's or 70's era, with a lunch counter and stools, and a tiled wall behind the counter. Some colorful updates included a row of nice paintings along the dining room wall, and several healthy plants in the front windows. Simple and basic diner style. Service was excellent, there were several younger staff members working that were welcoming and helpful. The breakfast dish I had was fresh and made to order. A corned beef hash skillet had griddled bits of sliced corned beef, fresh red and green peppers, and two eggs overeasy. Very tasty and affordable. They have a good amount of lunch/dinner options as well, the simple burgers are only $5. This was a great little breakfast spot on a Saturday morning after my daughters and I went to an early appointment. There was a nice spot at the counter with three stools, so we sat there! My daughter noted that it liked like we were just sitting in someone's home at their kitchen counter. It's very welcoming, clean, and simple. Our food was cooked to perfection. I ordered chilaquiles, which I'm picky about, and they did a fine job!!! One of my daughter's ordered steak and eggs and loved it (didn't finish it until the next day, but loved every bite!) Excellent breakfast food. I had an omelet and the eggs were fluffy and full of flavor. Hashbrowns were delicious. My friend had chorizo and scrambled eggs and devoured it. Got the egg sandwich with cheese, and the chilaquiles verdes along with pancakes, jamaica and iced coffee. The coffee was warm and had remnants of an ice cube barely floating. Asked for a side of ice and the cup the ice came in was like half the size of the coffee cup. The food took like 20 minutes even though the order was very simple. Scrambled eggs on top of white bread( asked for wheat) and just slapped a slice of cheese in there. Same with the chilaquiles. This is a family owned place and I'm not trying to drag them down and give them one star, but man the cleanliness, the food, and the wait really had me feeling some type of way. This restaurant has changed owners like 8 times since I've been in the area(almost 4 decades!). For the newest owners, change it up. Doesn't cost much to redecor the place if you do it yourself. Prices are way too high. I paid 40 dollars for my order and honestly you could get the same for almost half the price at a Mexican place down the street. I really wanted to give this place a higher rating but I have to be honest here for the millions that use this app, unlike Google where you got business owners making multiple accounts and giving themselves 5 stars. Here's my extremely honest review of Mayfair restaurant. Honestly if you're just coming here for the food; the food is definitely tasty and 5 star quality with ample portions. However the interior of this diner is underwhelming and shabby. Also you have to walk through the kitchen area to get to the bathroom and take note beverages are printed on a chalkboard wall. I didn't realize this and went with my server's rather expensive suggestion. She suggested a large strawberry horchata drink which tasted like a child's strawberry Qwik drink. I ended up ordering a steak skillet which comes with your choice of eggs delicious home cooked potatoes some cheese and your choice of either French toast mini pancakes or toast. I went with an order of mini pancakes and my breakfast was incredibly delicious. The service here is also great; but there was a large crowd of teenagers that spoiled the vibes for me. They were here being rowdy and I'm just not into that. I'd call this a family style diner ambience that attracts teens and parents with young children. The food here is excellent however I was in sticker shock because my bill turned out to be $27 including tip for one strawberry drink and one skillet served on a plate. I prefer for the traditional presentation where skillets come out in a sizzling pan. It's just more fun served that way. Honestly this non fussy diner charges more than the diners in the Gold Coast and in Lakeview so that really threw me off. COVID-19: A staff member was talking to customers and rolling silverware without wearing a mask. The kitchen staff was not wearing masks either. After we complained to our server, the staff member came out to our table and claimed she was exempt from wearing a mask because she "has a medical condition". We Started with habanero wings and Buffalo sauce on the side, wings were very crispy on the outside and extremely juicy on the inside, spicy but not intense (some of the best wings I've ever had). When we arrived we were met with warm smiles. It's a seat yourself type restaurant. Our server was Venessa, she polite, knowledgeable and pleasant. She was attentive and always available. Glenda ordered oatmeal and a couple eggs which came with hash browns mixed with bell peppers. The food was well seasoned and plentiful. Large portions. I selected the vegetable skillet. It was a little flat could use a little salt. Taking that into consideration I thoroughly enjoyed it. FYI, we went there through Groupon. They have 25% payback on your registered credit card. I ordered the corned beef hash and a patty melt from the Mayfair. On a positive note, the portions were plentiful. There was real chopped corned beef in the hash, instead of the minced, canned stuff you typically receive. The burger was juicy and also enough for two servings. My complaints are that when someone orders the comfort food corned beef hash they are typically expecting the flavor you get from pan frying potatoes onion and peppers together. You get those crunchy edges that give the hash their zing. I missed that with Mayfair's hash. It was really bland. The potatoes tasted like the ones you get from the frozen food section of your grocer that you steam and toss in a bowl. I was so disappointed. The patty melt had lettuce and tomato and the rye wasn't pan fried in butter until toasted. So, unfortunately, it too was missing the expected flavor kick. However, I would give them another try.
