I visited this seafood restaurant on the hunt for fish and chips. It's a typical seafood establishment that has seen better days. It's still open and running because either the food is good or they give huge portions. I came in after lunch but before dinner so there were not many people inside. The lunch rush was gone and the restaurant appeared to have all of the tables cleaned off and chairs put back neatly, ready for their dinner rush. I ordered the Friday lunch special of Baby White Fish with French Fries and Cole Slaw. It also came with hush puppies. Ordered malt vinegar on the side. I was pleasantly surprised. The sweet tea was good. The portions are huge and the fish was perfectly cooked, thick and meaty yet flaky. Their batter is perfectly seasoned and gives a great crunch. Their cole slaw was good, tasted fresh. The hush puppies were good. I've had better and I've had a lot of bad ones but these were good. The French fries...well they were not in the fryer long enough. Service was good. Staff was attentive and got my food to the table hot. If the fries had been cooked until crispy, I would have given them 4 stars. Not for the restaurant itself, but for the food. Why is this place still open? It has good food AND large portions and the food comes out hot. People are not coming here for the ambiance. First trip to Mayflower and it was a good first experience. It is a combination of booth and table seating. The murals on the walls are painted beach scenes and fit nicely with the theme within the restaurant. The bathroom is located just as you enter the restaurant on the right side. We were excited to have seafood since our other two local seafood places are out of commission, and we were pleased with what we got. We got the combination broiled platter with shrimp and trout. Our side was a loaded baked potato. They hush puppies are shaped in rings and are a good hearty cornmeal batter. We also got a side of fried okra because one of our littles said they wanted it. The okra wasn't fried as crispy as we like it, but it reheats well in the air fryer at home, as there was plenty of leftovers. Our littles shared a kids popcorn shrimp and also had a side of loaded baked potato. The service was good, until they gave our waitress a table of 20 in addition to the ones she was already waiting on. It wasn't her fault she couldn't keep up with the addition of that huge party. When I visit Asheboro, I love to get Mayflowers. Take out is separated from the dine in area. As always, I took my food to go but this time a little different. I took the food home to High Point. I was impressed to find it still warm once I got home. I don't have any problem with it being cold knowing the time it took to travel from one city to another. We had a large group out to celebrate a birthday on a Sunday. Our group consisted of 7 adults, a "big kid", and a baby in a car seat. The issue we dealt with had to do with the baby in the car seat--we entered a mostly empty restaurant and had to move several times because of the baby. It was obvious when we sat down that the high chair stuck out onto the walkway but we were asked to move 3 times. The hostess was clearly young (maybe a high schooler) so I get why she wouldn't get it but I feel like maybe training her would have helped. I'm going to be petty because this made me upset and I want some opinions on this ordeal. I was told at The mayflower in asheboro nc that I could not have my stroller because it was considered a fire hazard but this was in the way right after I moved my stroller, in the exact spot. Make it make sense. On top of this issue, the food was nasty, and manager was a rude person to deal with. We had a large party and was not informed about the tip being added into the total amount but we all chipped in the end and gave our waitress $71 cash after she automatically got $50 dollars from our church card. she deserved all the money because she was wonderful to deal with. BUT the manager insisted on getting the cash back from her because 1) she didn't inform our party of the added tip 2) she didn't think she needed THAT much tip. Honey.. please. After seating down in the restaurant I looked down to see a piece of fish laying on the floor. I placed an order for a small trout with French fries. I received a senior citizen plate of 1 trout filet with fries. A small plate would consist of 2 pieces of fish. The trout filet I received was overcooked and hard. When I tried to pick it up some of the batter started flying off so I could see how hard the fish was under the batter. Once I saw that I knew I was not eating they. So I proceeded to eat hard fries and 2 hushpuppies. The waitress came and asked how is everything I said good because if I complain about the fish I probably would receive a worse piece. This has been my favorite fish restaurant for many years. The portions are more than generous, the wait staff has always been amazing, and the prices are very reasonable. I always get the baby Alaskan whitefish and it is fried to perfection. Light golden crust, substantial tender white fish fillets underneath. I will say that I did try the rib eye steak once and it was not good at all. When we went to the cashier to pay, she said "How was everything" and I told her it was the first bad experience I had here due to the steak being so tough. She just said, I'm sorry, and collected the full amount for the bill. Lucky that this was once in about 20 times and my lesson was "Don't order beef at a fish house." So that is why I don't count that one visit against them. Since then, we have moved to Texas and I have searched all over for a seafood restaurant as good as the Mayflower and still have not found a substitute! read more

Location in Greensboro: Absolutely horrible! Soggy and no taste! Left off kids fries. When uber pointed out the error they told uber they forgot to collect cost of fries from uber. Due to uber already closing out the pay transaction they could not open the order again. So instead of making sure the customer got their fries they paid for, they told uber ro deal with it. We were there Sunday for lunch. We had been there once previously several years ago. This visit was as lack-luster as the last. I generally give an establishment two opportunities to impress. They failed. The menu items represent the South of 40-50 years ago. I finally decided on a chicken sandwich. When I asked for available breads the answer was a hamburger roll. Do not get take out here!!! We have tried to give this place more than a fair chance, but no more. Don't know what they have done but the younger people who seem to be running the place have bad attitudes. The servings are now about half the size and the prices are higher every time I go. The menu is typical of what you find in most seafood places. My fiancé ordered the grilled chicken tenders and a sweet potato with the house salad. I ordered the fried baby flounder and jumbo shrimp with fries. Overall the chicken was nice and tender and flavorful. The baby flounder was the best part about my plate. The shrimp was pretty decent although some of them were not cooked all the way. The only complaint that I had is that we ordered our food and people that came in 10 to 15 minutes after we ordered, managed to receive some of the same food before we got ours. Overall I would visit again after this visit. We have been here four or five times and each time the food never disappoints. The price for the food is pretty decent as well. read more

Mayflower has been our family's go-to for good old fashioned seafood and great family get-togethers for many years--even though we travel and hour to get there. The pricing is reasonable and the lunch menu is a really good value. The restaurant is clean, the seating is comfy and the murals make me smile. The portions always exceed expectations. The pasta dishes and chicken are great for family members that don't want seafood. I will admit that their steak offerings are not great; however, the sign says SEAFOOD and that is what they specialize in. We have not had a bad seafood or pasta meal there in 30 years. So, my wife and I just moved to NC, from CA and in California there's plenty of seafood restaurants anywhere from phenomenal to mediocre at best! My wife grew up here and was raving about this place almost daily, until we finally had to go! Like I said, she grew up here and knew what to expect! When I walked in, my first impression was pretty good! The place was clean, well lit and more importantly it was packed! As with any restaurant, if it's sparsely occupied then I usually question the quality of the food! Getting true southern seafood was a treat, but being able to get excellent seafood from a family atmosphere, was outstanding! My wife had fried catfish and shrimp and cod. Of course I had to try a little bit of her order! And I had the scallops (huge ), and backed cod and baked trout! Omg! Honestly, I don't ever recall having such fresh fish as if I were eating at a waterfront seafood restaurant that hauls the fish right out of the water to the kitchen! The entire meal was perfectly seasoned and not overcooked! The service was great, almost to the point where one would be almost overwhelmed by the constant attention!
