My first time eating at Harbor One was AMAZING! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, while Christmas music played in the background. Our server was prompt, attentive, and knowledgeable. Everything on my plate was fresh, well seasoned, and truly made with love. The fish, shrimp, fries, and hushpuppies were fried to perfection. This food was so good that I literally scraped my plate! I went to Harbor one today solely to get my grandson a plate...I don't eat seafood but wanted to give him a different food option. I walked in asked what green vegetables they have (after seeing a video of the restaurant on YouTube) and I was told they didn't have any on the menu today. Oh well, I'll just get a kids shrimp plate with fries...not what I came for but because I had to pick him up from daycare, I settled. I paid, sat down and waited for my order only to have the waitress to come back 10 minutes later to say they would not sell me a kids plate because he wasn't with me and I didn't buy an adult meal with it. I explained that I don't eat seafood....anyway long story short. I paid for an adult meal for a 3 year old and got this. This can not be an adult meal! I feel cheated and disappointed. read more

So I guess I'll be the one to balance all the overrated reviews. If I could leave negative stars I would. Hell, I couldn't tell if I was walking into a restaurant or some kind of warehouse. And frankly, if someone who is supposedly working there cannot even pry his eyes away from the freakin TV to acknowledge my presence, screw it, I'm out of there. Mind you, this was on a Friday afternoon around 4pm. If nothing else, kinda sketchy as no one else was in the place except me and whoever the guy was watching TV (in retrospect, it could have been a guest like me assuming someone would come out and at least say hi). What a hidden gem! Our usual spot was closed, so we decided to try this restaurant for the first time--and wow, what a pleasant surprise! From the moment we walked in, we were warmly greeted and immediately felt welcome. The staff was incredibly thoughtful and accommodating of my food allergies, which meant the world to me. I checked the health rating and nearly fell out--it was a 100! That's almost unheard of and instantly gave me peace of mind. Due to my dietary restrictions, shrimp was my only option--and at first, I was a little disappointed. But then I took a bite. Let me tell you... these were hands-down the most flavorful, buttery, garlicky, perfectly seasoned shrimp I've ever had. Absolutely divine. And the collard greens? And the yams!! Black food is beautiful. I've never been to Harbor one, but when I stepped outside my car and smelled smoke and chicken I knew I was going to have a meal nostalgic of childhood summers growing up in the Midwest. The inside was as clean as could be with a 99.5 sanitation's score. The music was relaxing, and looking around the restaurant was full of patrons that look like me. This being a for a gourmand looking for a meal authentic to the cuisine. I ordered Fried Crocker, macaroni and cheese, and rice with gravy. The meal was not terrible. It also wasn't amazing. I could tell my sides were scoped into my Tray prior to the fish being finished cooking. They were cold. It's hard to turn soulful food into a casual dinning experience. Majority of our food takes hours to make. Then you hold it and pray that you sell through your prepared food before the quality drops dramatically. Obviously fried foods are made to order. But sides... we all know collards, yams, rice and gravy, macaroni and cheese etc are made ahead of time and held. I'm speaking from experience, of owning and operating a soulful catering company for 3 years. The issue I had was the wait/service. A small sign read something along the likes of " This is good food, not fast food. If you don't like to wait this may not be the place for you". I get it, but also I get it. You can't rush quality. But if you make me wait 25 minutes for fried fish... it better be top quality. Especially if the restaurant is half empty. Fish takes 3-8 minutes to fry from raw. Take that time add it to the time to put all of my food in Styrofoam tray ( Food that's clearly cooked already) you're looking at a 12-15 minute turn around. That didn't happen. This is speculation I would probably put money on. They were understaffed or were not staffed with enough professional hospitality workers. The communication between front of the house and back of the house was poor. I was asked 3 times what my name was on the order. With 3 people having ordered in person after me. Maybe they were swamped with online orders... I'm definitely not slamming them for being successful... I just think they have some kinks that need to be worked out to improve the guest experience. Some unsolicited advice I would give to Harbor one's managers. *put prices on the menu. Priceless menus at a casual home style restaurant screams food costing and money management issues. It says to me that you guys change your pricing so often you can't afford to update your menus. *use less disposable cups and containers. Unless you guys are severally understaffed. In the grand scheme of things it's cheaper to use reusable dishes, even paying someone the extra time to clean them. If the latter is the case... just think about how it looks to have a plate with mixed disposable and re washable dishes on it. It's just needs refinement. Take this review with a grain of salt. I will come back. I wish the best for establishments like these. Some good constructive criticism goes a long way for operations actively looking to remain competitive in a tight margined market. read more

(4.5 stars) Enticed by Facebook photos of their shrimp and grits, I had Harbor One on my to-try list for quite a while before finally paying them a visit. Unfortunately, the shrimp and grits were a Friday/Saturday only item, and my wife and I stopped by on a Thursday. Fortunately, it was far from a disappointing experience. Harbor One is a small, unpretentious (think Styrofoam containers and plasticware) place with an equally small menu, but this belies how good the food truly is. While the Sunday selections add soul food staples such as smoked ribs, mac and cheese, and yams, the weekday offerings are mostly fried fish/seafood platters or sandwiches as well as wings and a few apps/sides. Wanting to try a little bit of everything, my wife and I split an Ultimate Feast and added zucchini fries. The platter certainly lived up to its name as it included croaker, whiting, popcorn shrimp, jumbo shrimp, oysters, baked beans, fries, slaw, and a few hushpuppies. We were able to get four fairly filling meals out of it, and it offered quality as well as quantity. The hushpuppies are addictive and will leave you craving more. The tender oysters are the antithesis of every tough and chewy fried oyster or clam strip you've ever regretted and may even make converts of shellfish skeptics. The chip-style zucchini fries are housemade and generously breaded. Even the crinkle-cut fries (in most cases, a frozen product) were surprisingly tasty and well-seasoned. While croaker is something I might steer clear of in the future (lots and lots of bones), it too had a nice black pepper flavor. The price paid for the feast ($24) was a steal given the quantity and quality, and the proprietor was friendly and welcoming. Call it the paradox of success, but Harbor One does what it does so well that it can't help but leave you wanting more (more days open, more sure-to-be delicious menu offerings, etc.). In the meantime, take what you can get: you'll be happy with it. read more

I had my eye on this spot for some time, but today was the day I tried it. I called around 1 and asked for my food to be ready at 4. By 4:15 I was well on my way down Main with steaming hot food. Putting it simply, my quest for perfectly fried chicken and stellar sides in The Triad ended on today. Don't get me wrong other places have good sides and good chicken, but the execution of both, like my Momma does it, I simply had not come across until today. I had the collards, macaroni and cheese and fried chicken wings. The others had the ribs, collards and pintos with rice. Sides were all awesome. I'm from the Midwest so this N.C. BBQ often disappoints me, but whomever made these ribs did a thing and the bbq sauce was perfect. My 6'7" always eating baby brother who is visiting for a few days, co-signed this excellence and told me this was an awesome choice. The cost was a bit alarming at first. The food is sooooo good. I had the shrimp with smoked Gouda grits. Delicious! The Gouda was amazing. Shrimp were fresh and delicious. I added some hot sauce and it was perfect. My husband had the fried shrimp basket. It came with hush puppies, onion rings, beans and sautéed veggies. A ton of food! The hush puppies were perfect -a little sweet just like I like them. Onion rings were also excellent and I don't really have a thing for onion rings so that's high praise. They came with a special sauce that was wonderful. Service was friendly and kind. Have been looking forward to trying Harbor One. I was surprised by the reviews favoring the ribs, wings and sides as favorably as the seafood. Such a small but clean and comfortable establishment. We ordered the Whiting and popcorn shrimp platter. Mainly because it had a good variety of items. The Whiting was a huge portion and or course has some bones as expected but it was perfectly cooked. In love with the crispy edges and ends but the middle was thicker meaty, Hot and delicious. Although the shrimp were popcorn, they had a good size and were also flavorful and perfectly cooked. I could not stop eating them until they were all gone. Hushpuppies were also a little different from the norm and i ate them all, so good. The tartar sauce was great and the remoulade was a wonderful surprise. Nice to have a little something unexpected. Cole slaw was good but the baked beans were so amazing, we couldnt leave them alone either. Cant wait to come back and have those with some ribs and wings. Maybe for Sunday dinner. The little packet of onions and peppers was a lovely accompaniment. I'm a big fan of them in general. We opted for the zucchini chips & onion rings. They were fantastic as well but next time i will ask for them completely separate. They got lost in all the other deliciousness. The platter was a huge amount of food for about $16.00 more than enough for two people. The express lunch would probably be a better option for me personally for lunch and around $11.00. I also had the fried mac and cheese banging, my only request is i need more hushpuppies 3 isn't enough I cant tell which is better the mac cheese bite which are about the size of tennis ball and you get 6 of them, the hushpuppies are small but full of flavor. I dont give out 5 stars you have to wow me, they did that when the fries are seasoned and the beans are sweet, I tell everyone you have to seasoned the side as well. Was excited to see a new local joint open in High Point. The venue is small and quaint. My wife and I had the fish and shrimp tacos (they were out of my first choice, Salmon Patties). The menu contains mainly shrimp and whiting fish. You can get either grilled or fried. Our tacos were tasty and fresh. We were both disappointed at the portion size of the filling. I had the pleasure of visiting this business with a friend that lives in the area. She raved about the food and the service and I couldn't agree more! The owner Leroy greeted us upon entering and quickly took our order. He set the expectation that the food is cooked to order so we would have to wait. We were perfectly fine with that! When our dishes came out I think my eyes popped out of my head. Great portions and visually pleasing! I didn't know what I wanted to eat first. I started with the pork chops, broccoli casserole and Mac and cheese. The chips were fried and seasoned to perfection! I wish I would have taken a side of the casserole home with me and the Mac and cheese was great. I also had one of the fried wings and again seasoned, hot and juicy! He has a huge variety of drink choices to wash it all down with. We also had a piece of the carrot cake and it was delicious.
