I've only been here 3 times so far - and tried it on a whim the first time I went, I just HAD to see what was in that horrifically ugly building. The decor..... is very brightly colored, gaudy, and dated. That said.. The service is always great. You get seated quick, you get refills quickly, and the food comes out incredibly fast. The prices are downright cheap. The chips are good, the salsa is average, but they also bring some decent queso out with the chips. The menu is fairly typical of a TexMex/MexMex restaurant, focusing slightly more on the Mexican side. Out of all the places I've tried in Denton, I'd say this is a solid "above average" on the food. It's not the best food I've ever had (but I grew up in a border town), but it's consistently good. They also have multiple daily specials - some posted at the entrance, some by the register, but the waitstaff will tell you what they have on special. Good margaritas too. read more

I've been to Mazatlan a handful of times and it's been enjoyable. The food is decent. I've kept a tradition of ordering cheese enchiladas when I go to a mexican restaurant I haven't been to before, and these didn't disappoint. They weren't the apex of cheese enchiladas (Ninfa's on Navigation owns this title), but they were certainly tasty and the prices are reasonable. My absolute favorite part of Mazatlan is the service. Very few places in town bring their A-Game like Mazatlan. Your glass is never empty, your salsa bowl floweth over, and the chips are always crispy and hot. read more

Really good Mexican food! You would think that there were many good Mexican restaurants in Denton... Well, not the type that I have tried. However, Mazatlan was; fresh, good, authentic, had great service, and was not Tex-Mex.. I would recommend this place as good "Go-to" option when you feel the need to eat reliable prepared Mexican food. As a caveat I wanted to debunk the myth of this place catering to the pallets of "White people." Mazatlan is a small family-owned, affordable Tex Mex joint. I come here often when I visit family in Denton. It's nothing fancy, but it's comfortable and it rarely gets loud - a good place for a leisurely lunch/dinner where you know you won't have to yell over the din of a crowd. The food won't necessarily 'wow' you, but everything is capably made and consistently satisfying. Good old fashioned Tex Mex comfort food. One standout item I really love: the bacon and cheese chicken flautas. So yummy. So evil. The free queso is a plus, just ask for some Cholula pepper sauce to spice it up a bit; it's strictly gringo without some doctoring. Service is typically very efficient and friendly. read more

Here is an yet another example of Hispanic owners catering to fat white people. The food is alright, which is the only reason it gets four stars. It's not their fault, that's just what fat white people like to eat. That being said, I wish I could've given stars... Their speed of service is amazing. Decor is kitchsy, which I love. I'm a huge fan of hole in the wall type places. It's a family owned place, and the owners are always there to great you with a smile. Also, they have huckleberry margaritas. Delicious. I get really tired of stuck up people expecting a five star restaurant everywhere they go. If what you're looking for is reasonably priced Tex-Mex served by a friendly staff, quick and with a smile, then you will most certainly leave happy. Well so far, I have not been impressed with the food in this town. My husband and I came here on a whim to see how the sour cream enchiladas checked out. And they did! The food was great. Finally- a go to restaurant! The service was great. The atmosphere is cute. The beer is served with a seriously cold glass- yumm! Am I allowed to leave a review that is just heart-eye emojis? Because that is my actual feeling about Mazatlan. My family has been eating here for a good 24 years, and we have always left happy. Besides having great food (try the chimichanga or flautas or fajita nachos or tacos al carbon - I could go on all night), they have incredibly personable service. They are great with kids and often come over to the table to help my father practice his Spanish. They're usually super fast, but on the occasion they aren't, they always make up for it with their good attitudes. read more

My most recent visit to this restaurant was my third time, and I have since realized a difference in service between lunch and ldinner. Either way, the service was absolutely amazing. Chips stayed full, glasses remained full, and the food wad brought out in a timely manner. The server and manager even let my roommates and I sit where we liked (in front of the basketball game on tv). The food was amazing. I had some enchiladas, loved them. My roommate had the sour cream enchiladas. He says they tasted great, but could've used another flavor. The tortillas tasted a bit bland, like they'd been out a bit too long. I'd come back, and I intend to. The prices are fair. All in all, 4/5 best describes my experience at Mazatlan. When I was at UNT I would come to this hole in the wall joint all the time. 3 years later, I still get a craving for this restaurant every time I'm in Denton. We made a reservation for 10 people at 9:30, not realizing it closed at 10, but everyone there was very nice and accommodating! They have an extensive margarita list (mango is my favorite). The food we ordered came out very quickly and it was all delicious and very affordable (less than $10 a plate). I highly recommend the chicken/beef flameado and the chicken feast, which is basically a sample of all their chicken dishes. Love this place and I will continue to stop by when I make it up to Denton. read more

Complimentary queso is always nice, and the employees are friendly with smiles and the right courtesies. Ordered the Chile Relleno, and was expecting a freshly fried, hot delicious mess of food. What I got instead was a Luke warm, soggy and mushy pepper that was plopped in the middle of the plate. It looked as if they had fried it 30 minutes prior to my arrival and left it sitting under a lamp. Took one bite and sent it back and got two crispy tacos instead (kinda hard to mess up those...) When the waitress came back she explained that while Chile Rellenos are supposed to be crispy on the outside and hot and gooey on the inside, Mazatlan's Chile Rellenos were supposed to be like the heap I was served. In the end I paid full price for an entree that should've never been sent out of the kitchen to begin with. It may have been a one time deal, but one experience can make you not want to go back again. read more

Good Mexican food in Denton. I had the traditional burrito with meat, cheese and beans. Good size and tasty! The prices are very reasonable and it's a casual setting. There was no wait to be seated on a Friday night for dinner. The salsa was good, not a fan of the chips. The servers were very nice and food was fresh and fast! I'm certain that at one time this restaurant was the epitome of Mexican cuisine; however, that must have been ages ago. While the restaurant is conveniently located and had a suitable size for hosting, the food is anything but authentic. The tacos were served in a crunchy out of the package shell, the salsa out of a bottle, the enchiladas had the same salsa drizzled over and the tortilla shell was dry. I went here when I was a kid and had a different picture in mind when it was suggested for lunch I wasn't excited. Well I walked in and was surprised at how different and nice and comfortable the conditions were (tinted windows and big roomy booths) and how great the food is. I've gone several times and never leave hungry (the fajitas for two is a great deal). We went here Saturday and there are is a contemplation... The food, okay. not the greatest, but not the overall worse. Salsa: Compromising mostly of tomatoes, and tomato sauce. Yet there isn't a lot of cilantro, salt, pepper, or spices to it. Which is a downside to me...I need great salsa, not one that looks like it came from a can. The food: Okay, again, flavor- not so much. I wish they had onions in the meat mix as well as some kind of spice mix to it. They mainly just good the meat with some salt, not a lot of extra flavor. Margarita: Basic pre-mix frozen margaritas. Not the greatest, but out of a million pre-mixed margaritas I'v had, this one wasn't drowning in salt. Which I appreciated! Verde Salsa: Okay, I am biased towards verde salsa, but my BF said it was decent. Overall, prices, fairly good. So if your looking for a meal under 30 for two with drinks, this is a place to check out. The service was on point, we had every single worker come check on us and make sure we were good. One of the best restaurants with great service. Sadly we are still on the search for authentic Mexican dishes. My whole family has been going here for years. It's been a while since we've eaten here. It's not even remotely the same food we were used t eating. The meat had no flavor , and when I asked why the meat tasted so bad the waitress was dismissive and rude. The manager did not care at all , and said it was the cook! Not the cook it was the food! Seniors like to split a plate because it is too much food for one person. Even if you don't split a plate a set up charge is applied. That affects the servers tips sometimes. In all honestly this is the best Mexican Restaurant in Denton. I love the people and the food here so much. It is such a pleasant environment and a very good place to bring friends or family. Every single time I have been here they have prepared my order correctly and given SUBERB service! The servers are well trained and attentive. This place is a joke! We came in with a family of 8 before 4pm ordered off the lunch menu to get lunch menu prices... got the ticket and two items on it was put at the full dinner price. Manager Arturo was very rude and wouldn't correct the ticket. On top of all this the food sat and wasn't fresh when it was delivered to our table. The manager was very accommodating and polite in asking if we could wait a few minutes and get us a large enough table for 8 of us. Once we sat down I ordered their bargain draft beers whose prices are extremely affordable. I decided to try their Chicken Flameante, and so glad I did! 2 thumbs way up!
