Today I was craving flautas!! I suggested we go to one of our go to places in town and my husband mentioned this place. I've never noticed it before, but I'm always game to try a new place. We arrived at 4:45pm which is kind of a bummer because after looking at their menu I see they do lunch prices until 4pm. Too bad I didn't get hungry earlier! To be honest, upon entering I immediately felt like this was an El Matador copy from the tables and the menu, which was formatted the exact same way. El Matador is my favorite sit down Mexican place so I tried really hard not to compare it and give it a fair shake. After we ate, I talked to our server and found my gut feeling was correct. They make everything in house except their chips and tortillas. I found the chips fine, if a little light on seasoning, but I felt they were just starting to get stale. My husband said he didn't notice, so maybe most people like them, but I've had better chips and salsa at lots of places. The salsa was a little watery, but had some heat to it. The queso on the other hand was extremely good!! I would absolutely order that queso again. Our server was very kind and attentive and made some recommendations off my questions. The food arrived fairly quickly as well. The staff was very quick with the chips and salsa and drinks. This was an off peak time and there were only a couple of other tables at the time, but our service was smooth. My husband got the beef fajita nachos for $8.29 and it came with all the fixings on the side. I appreciate that as you don't want something over or under dressed and you can customize to your preference. The chunks of carne asada were plentiful and I'm glad they didn't skimp on the meat or cheese like some places do. My husband enjoyed them and gave me a piece of beef to sample. It definitely had the carne asada seasoning which was quite tasty. The meat is fatty and flavorful which I know a lot of people like. I personally prefer leaner cuts of meat while my husband prefers fattier cuts, so I believe he ordered correctly here, lol. I was pleased when the server suggested I could order either of the flautas and make them a combination option. This was great since I have never been here before and wasn't sure which ones I would prefer. I got the 3 flauta meal for $9.29 (after 4pm) with 2 chicken corn flautas and 1 chicken and bacon flour flauta. This came with sour cream, salad and guacamole. The guacamole tasted very fresh. The rice was very good and the beans were okay, they could have used more flavor, but I didn't mind them. I never before realized that I ate enough Mexican to tell that tortillas aren't made in house, but I felt like the tortillas were lacking. They weren't awful, I just eat some really awesome Mexican on a regular basis and thought these were only okay. The corn flautas were huge and a generous portion, the chicken and bacon flauta on flour had better seasoning and of course had a different texture. My meal was good overall, but I would probably try something different on my next visit. I'll go with enchiladas or maybe street tacos in the future and see what I think. I found my meal to be 3 star, while my husband thought his was at least 4 stars. We both agreed the queso was at least 4 stars as well. It's only been one meal so far and I'm not convinced I wasn't secretly comparing them to other locations. I think 4 stars is a fair rating. When you know you are picky, you have to account for that, lol. The service was great, my soda was refreshing, the queso was extremely good, the guacamole was fresh, the carne asada was flavorful and the rice was very good. I also think the prices were fair for the generous portions. Those are all things I think can account for a solid rating. read more

This is a popular place. The food is pretty good and priced very well. There are a few negatives: 1) Parking can be a challenge. The parking lot is small. You may have to park next door at the bowling alley. 2) Definitely not a place for singles or couples. They have lots of seating for larger parties, 6 or more, but no smaller tables for singles or couples. If you are single, you are better off getting take out. Tonight I went in and was told there would be a wait for a table despite the fact there were 6 available tables and no lines waiting for seating, just me and the group of 4 that came in behind me. Another gentleman came and found me a seat at table for 4; it is the smallest table available. During my 45 minute dinner, there was never fewer than 4 tables available at any given time and never anyone waiting for a seat. 3) There are flies in the dining room which is a health hazard. If they are flying around the food you are eating, there is a good chance they are flying around the kitchen. read more

First visit here. Greeted immediately and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Great service. :) This Place is traditional Mexican food rather than Tex-Mex, so the flavors were a little more bland than the Tex-Mex we usually get, but the food was good and served hot, and the menu had a huge variety of foods to choose from. We had the large cheese dip to start and it was hot and not too thick or spicy. The salsa had a nice flavor and good kick to it. The chips could've used a little salt, but this was easily fixed with the table salt. Our main course was the fajitas for two. Served with rice and choice of refried or charro beans, guacamole, sour cream and pico. The servings were plentiful and we ended up with a to-go box, enough for one of us to have lunch tomorrow. The fajita meat was very tender and was served with onions and peppers on a sizzling skillet. Would have them again. Overall, good experience. Growing up in Denton in 70s and 80s, Mazatlan was one of our favorites. But I was skeptical when my sister wanted to order from here for a large family gathering in Denton. The restaurant had its up and downs over the last 20-25 years. Boy was I wrong. The manager, Arturo and Jose made it easy to order for a large group and the food was ready and loaded in car at the exact time requested. And hot and fresh. The group of 20 loved the food. We ordered fajitas, beef and chicken enchiladas, and tamales. Salsa was fresh and tasty. Plenty of chips, queso, bean, rice and guacamole. Sopapillas were cooked perfectly and came w honey. The only troublesome item was that the actual prices were higher than website. Needs to be updated on catering menu. Still cheaper and more homemade flavors than On the Border. We will definitely be back when in Denton. Many thanks to the staff for a job well done. read more

5 stars for service. Excellent staff. Never let our drinks get low and always refilled our salsa with out needing to be asked. 5 stars for their salsa! The salsa here is spicy but it's so good I want to drink it. And bring it home with me. I liked the queso but my husband didn't prefer it. He said it was too watery for him. 2 stars for cooking of the meat - husband got the fajita trio (shrimp steak and chicken) and it was all heavily over cooked. The beef in my taco salad was fine but underseasoned. The portions with the fajita were awesome! Husband is 6"5 and 250 lbs and needed a to-go box. My taco salad felt fresh and light and I loved the tortilla bowl it came in. I poured the salsa in my bowl and made up for the lack of flavor. I've gotten the sour cream enchiladas before and liked them. I'd suggest trying that if you're unsure of what to get. The restaurant clearly needs a facelift but considering the area it's in it fits right in. It's great authentic Mexican food (I would know, I'm from Texas and dated a Mexican for a long time and ate his mamas food) - so if you're in denton go ahead and give it a try. read more

Outside doesn't say much about this place but we had high hopes seeing all the policeman who were eating there. Staff was friendly and the food was delicious! I had the cheese stuffed chili relleno, excellent! The chimichangas were scrumptious and we also ordered the lunch fajitas, they were just ok. All in all this place is great. I've been here a few times and I am finally ready to commit to an opinion. This place is mediocre. I don't know how it has such a good reputation. The place is loud, dingy, the service is slow, and the food is nothing special. The service: there does not seem to be a system to their procedure. The servers are tending to scattered tables instead of zones. Our server apologized every time he approached our table because everything was so slow. The tables are sticky and tilt every time someone moves or takes a bite. The chips were good and thin but lacked seasoning and they were so crumbled I needed a spoon. The salsa was bland and sweet. It was basically dressed up canned tomato sauce. The rice was OK but needed salt. The beans were OK but very mild. The beef fajitas were pretty good but the veggies needed to be grilled more. The chicken mole was very bland and needed a ton of salt to rescue it. Also, it's pretty sad when a $1 side order of jalapeños in a Mexican restaurant equals a few spoons of pickled sliced jalapeños from a jar. Very disappointing. I won't go back. There are at least three better sit-down Mexican restaurants in Denton and if you want lunch you have all the taquerias. read more

I'd like to like Mazatlan more than I do. The staff were very friendly, and they seemed heaven bent on giving us more chips and salsa. The salsa was very good, but we're trying to avoid chips. We drove up in the dark, so the place seemed more gloomy in the parking lot than it probably really is. The inside was clean but well worn. My wife had the carne asada and said it was OK. i tried some and it was, well, OK. Nothing to write home about. Not terribly well seasoned. Kinda bland. I had the beef fajitas. They were (dare I say it again?) OK. Nothing special. At the end of the meal, we'd had a very typical Tex-Mex meal. Nothing spectacular, nothing awful. The serving were large. As to the service, once we got past the chips and salsa stage, things slowed down considerably... yeah, the service could have been faster. Bottom line, will we go back? Well, we've been there and see no real reason to go back. But if a friend wants to go there, we won't say no. read more

This place is great for uber eats and they certainly do not skimp out on the food. Even with delivery, they provide you with ample chips and salsa for your meal. Everything was packaged individually and with care. The meat was surprisingly tender for a tex mex spot and flavored well. I, also, bought a side order of verde sauce which was pleasantly spicy. I used Yelp and Trip Advisor to find this place and they did not steer me wrong. I'm visiting from California and did not think I'd find good Mexican food in Denton, Texas... I'm happy to say I was wrong! This place was probably the best Mexican food über ever had. I ordered a chicken/steak quesadilla and the meat was very flavorful and tender, I could tell they used quality meats! The beans and rice were also great, not overpowered with spices to try and change the taste. Our server (who ironically was also from California) was super friendly and gave great recommendations on what to order... Our food came out within about 5 minutes and was delicious! read more

Yay! STREET TACOS OR SOUR CREAM CHICKEN ENCHILADAS! Can't seem to get past those two to try much else. Call ahead for homemade tamales to go that are frozen or not. Don't know who makes them but they know their stuff. I take a fork and filter the solids out of the salsa and add it to the queso. Heaven! Borracho beans are my favorite also. So is the guacamole. The chips just keep coming. I don't think I have ever had anything bad at Mazatlan. I have been coming here since 1975 or whenever they opened. It has been family-run all that time. I was here before they enclosed the screened in porch on the front but that's okay because the exhaust fumes from hwy 380 were probably not healthy. I really miss the ceiling pinatas that were quite original and high-quality. Wish they would bring them back! Great gifts! Clean restrooms. This place can be quiet or not depending on the time of day. Adjust accordingly. Efficient staff. Surly employees do not last long so TELL them if you have an experience that was not pleasant. They care. Prices are very reasonable and portions are really decent, I have a big appetite and I almost always take something home with me. Food, not an employee! ;) Ample parking. Well lighted. It's a great place to go eat after you have finished bowling next door and you don't even have to move the car. read more

We were kind of hesitant to eat here due to the location and age of the building, but when we walked in, it was super clean. It's kind of nostalgic with stained glass lights and resin coated tables with adds on them. The service was great. We never had to wait on anything. Chips and drinks were refilled with out having to ask. The food was served hot and fast after ordering. One of the best ran restaurants I've been to in Denton. We were craving some Tex-Mex food, and this place didn't disappoint. The chips and salsa were super tasty. I ordered the beef fajita chimichanga. It was probably the best I've ever had. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is that they may have the most incompetent human answering the phone taking orders. This individual has peaked in life and has taken on a task she had no business handling, taking togo orders. If you need food togo, do yourself a favor to keep your blood pressure down and just go to their location and place your order with an actual waitress and wait for your order. By following this method your food will be correct and you won't have to deal with the helpless human completely botching your order. read more

For many years we have passed this gem because we were Snobs. Tonight I talked my son into trying it. We were seated immediately. Our server brought chips and "fantastic" hot sauce to our table. We ordered sweet tea which WAS never half empty. I chose the cheese enchilada and taco with rice and beans. The food arrived quickly and hot. The portions were enormous. One of the best Text Mex I've had in a long time. My son, who is a big eater, ordered the burrito with rice and beans. Mr. Skeptical could not finish his meal. Nor could I. SO good. I just ate lunch and the thought of Mazatlan somehow still gets my appetite all worked up. Mmmmmmm... By far my favorite Mexican food in Denton. I'm sure there may be more authentic hole in the wall places or legit street taco stands, but for a well-rounded experience, you can't go wrong with Mazatlan. It's a family owned and run business, and they just do it right. From free queso at lunch to $1.25 cold brews every day, they've always got me coming back from more. Who else has a Huckleberry margarita?! The staff is friendly and good about seating you quickly, even when there's a wait. The same servers are typically working and always treat you well. They do a great job of making sure you always have a full salsa and bowl of chips, which I never fail to feverishly devour. I'm always wary to get the beef at Mexican restaurants because it too often comes out chewy, greasy, or woven with fat. I did finally step out of my chicken comfort zone and tried Mazatlan's beef fajitas, and I've never gone back! Every kind of meat I've had here is amazing. I most recently opted for the steak street tacos (4), which are tender little meat morsels served with the traditional chopped onions, cilantro, and lime on corn tortillas. YUM! All of that being said, dip your chips in the queso then the salsa. You won't regret it... and you won't be able to stop until it's gone! read more

To be honest, we'd been passing over this restaurant just based on the outside appearance and it's slightly inconvenient location. I was demonstrating the Urban Spoon app on the iPhone and Mazatlan came up with a high percentage. We went mid-afternoon on a Sunday and missed the crowd. We got excellent service from a very sweet waitress. We were pleasantly surprised to get a small cup of good queso with our white corn tortilla chips and fresh salsa. We ordered some from the menu and some from the "today's specials" white boards. I wish I'd seen all 3 of those boards. One of them is slightly hidden in the entryway. The food was all above average. The interior was homey without being divey. The sopapillas were also good, drizzled with honey and cinnamon sugar. read more
