Restaurants like Mazi remind DC how tough the food industry is in this city. To survive, something exceptional must be baked into your strategy. At Mazi, it's not obvious what their game is. After happy hour here, I can't find something that's worthy of 5 stars. Here's why: 1) Food: The happy hour menu is decent, but the food wasn't exceptional. My honey feta was good at first, but after 3-4 bites, it was all a little too much. My friend ordered the meatballs and found them dry and lacking flavor. 2) Drinks: Overpriced and mediocre. My margarita was $8 on happy hour prices and watered down. Every other sip, I wasn't sure if I was sipping water or alcohol. My friends were charged $13 for Baileys on the rocks (it should be $7-$9) and $12.50 for vodka and club soda. If it was the best in that city, maybe, but overpriced for meh drinks. There were a few good points: 1) Space: It's not gorgeous, but the space layout and design are not bad. It's simple yet a little more elegant than the average restaurant. 2) Service: Our server was attentive, kind, and gave us her honest recommendations. I will say we went at 4pm on a Wednesday for happy hour and we had the entire place to ourselves. We stayed 1.5 hours and no one else came in. Time will tell if they survive. read more

This place used to be called Catch 15. It's sad that it's gone. There were a lot of memories in that place over the years, but oh well. If you feel the same way, no worries though. This new place will treat you right. I came here for a HH with a good friend one day after work. For the most part, the inside looks almost the same as Catch 15. Just a few new chairs and tables I think. It's hard to tell. One thing they did ditch was the fish tank behind the bar. It was fake, but I'm glad they replaced it with TV''s now. Shout out to our bartender, Tim. He was on his game, making sure he knew our names, checking in on us every so often, making good food recommendations and which ones would pair up nicely with our drinks. Came here for a lunch meeting and it was a solid choice. Menu seems a bit unfocused but based on other reviews I had the pork souvlaki and tried the pork belly appetizer. My friend had the chicken kabobs and we each traded one of our three skewers. Both meats were flavorful and tender and the veggies skewered on were just as tasty- good chunks of tomatoes and zucchini. Service was attentive and the food came out fast. The restaurant was pretty empty (3 tables total) but they still sat us right next to another table - I would have preferred to be a bit farther away since it was a large group and their conversation was loud enough to be distracting to ours. Overall the food was good, but the whole restaurant smelled strongly of cleaners and the chemical smell was overpowering. Combined with being sat next to a large noisy table at an otherwise empty restaurant - it made for a less than pleasant dining/communicating experience. The atmosphere, interior design, and service was great. However, when it came to the food, it wasn't that appetizing or different. Where was the seasoning?! I had the Pappardelle with Mushrooms and Kefte(I believe it is) for the appetizer. The beer selection was great as I am a fan of beers and they had a variety and not just your standard selection. However, the food is the thing that makes the restaurant. The Pappardelle with Mushrooms certainly satisfied my stomach but was not appetizing. It felt like it could've just been placed in the microwave or warmer. It could have been done better or added ingredients to flare up the meal. never heard of this place before and in fact every time I drive by on k Street I can't say that I really noticed it because I was always looking at the gentleman's lounge which was prominently featured next to it Drinks: I ended up getting two one was their version of a Hemingway daiquiri called the Hemingway float. The other drink which I got was called the Mexican last stand it was green and had mezcal in it and it was delicious not to mention really pretty to look at Food: for appetizers we ended up getting the honey feta cheese and it was delicious also got the lamb meatballs which were also the very very tasty. for my entree I ended up getting the pork skewers and they were very tasty. My friend ended up getting a steak which she wanted well done but ended up coming out quite rare. They ended up cooking it again however when they did it was a completely different flat iron steak. They ended up asking her to order a totally different entree which she did and they not only took off the price of her steak but also the entree she ordered which was really really nice of them. Price: a bit high however the food quality is pretty good Parking: there really isn't any I took an Uber. My friend who I bet ended up using the valet at the hotel Hyatt next door. A delicious choice for a leisurely downtown D.C. lunch. It seems the last few reviewers also "came here for a work lunch." As did I! We spent a little more than an hour here, so it's good for a longer lunch meeting or conversation. The space is very cozy and can accommodate many group sizes, and there's a fireplace in the back. Appetizers: Recommend the brussels sprouts (crispy and tasty!) and the lamb cubes. The lamb cubes were served in sun-dried tomato sauce and three bread slices. This appetizer was larger than I thought it would be, which was pleasantly surprising! My coworker got the soup of the day, which was zucchini soup, and it was also larger than we thought it would be, and she raved about it. Mains: There are many enticing-looking dishes on the menu. I ended up ordering pork souvlaki, which arrived fresh off the grill and had two skewers of pork and one skewer of vegetables. I became full halfway through because we enjoyed the appetizers so much! Both of my coworkers ordered the chicken alfredo and they each thought it was absolutely delicious. The waitress recommended it as well. All in all, service is good and food is good. One of the best fine dining restaurants in Washington DC. I came to Mazi three times in one week for a work conference. Yes, the food here is that good !! Appetizers: Lamb Cubes in tomato sauce with fennel and cumin. Melt in your mouth lamb chunks in a mild tomato sauce with olives. Served with toasted French bread. This was an amazing appetizer. Entree: the seafood here rules. Salmon with Risotto. Great flavor and herb seasoning on the salmon. Tender, flaky salmon with risotto and the most amazing grilled vegetables. Chicken kabobs. - The chicken here is so tender and they use a lot of spices and flavoring. It doesn't taste like bland chicken on a stick. The bbq onion , bell pepper and tomatoes that came with it were delicious as well. Dessert the chocolate lava cake with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Hot , gooey and sweet chocolate cake with creamy vanilla bean ice cream hit the spot. The wine list is impressive. They also have an amazing house Cabernet red wine. I went to celebrate my anniversary dinner at Mazi and it was a wonderful time. There were several birthday dinners happening as well so the place is very versatile for celebrating different events. Our waiter was such a nice older man and the bus boy was also really nice. For appetizers we had the pork belly and bruschetta. The pork belly was a bit salty but very flavorful and the bruschetta was wonderful. We really enjoyed both of those appetizers. For entrees We got the fillet steak and seafood pasta. The pasta was phenomenal, superior to the fillet. The fillet was alright. The Tiramisu was wonderful! I would definitely be back and get the seafood pasta dish this time. I stopped in here because I was staying next door at the Hyatt Place and I got stuck on a call that caused me to missed my dinner reservation somewhere else. Lawyers?!?! The first thing to comment on is Tim the bartender. He knows that perfect balance between being friendly and too in your face. He's also a Somalia and knows his West Coast wines. And he put the Wings Ranger game on the television. I started with the lamb cubes, the owners dish. It comes with a red sauce with sun dried tomatoes, olives and a healthy dose of cumin. The lamb was tender. The sauce had deep Mediterranean warmth to it. Fantastic. For the main, I went with the Pappardelle with mushrooms. It was a light white sauce with wide Pappardelle noodles. My experience was uneven on a recent Wednesday night. I ordered the crispy Brussels sprouts, the chicken with wine sauce, and tiramisu. The spouts were a bit overdone and oily but had a good flavor with the accompanying sauce. I didn't eat all because they were simply too greasy. My chicken dinner made the chicken an absolute star. Perfectly cooked skin with a lovely crisp and juicy inside. So good. The veggies were also cooked well and flavored nicely. I didn't care for the rice which had a minty flavor (just didn't seem to meld well with the rest of the meal, and didn't add a note of "freshness" if that was the intent of the mint). Honestly could have just had the chicken over the veggies with the sauce and been very content. Service was spotty. My server did not return after delivering my meal and took forever to come back after I was finished. I finally got to order dessert and the tiramisu was spectacular.
