I met up with some family for lunch at MAZU recently. My first time! We ordered a number of items, including the Dandan Mian, Sabbich, and Jianbing. They were all delicious, but the Sabbich was really special! While I'd like to try more of the menu, I think I'll go for the Sabbich again next time. Let's start from the great. We loved the fried oyster mushrooms! We really wanted to love the food here due to our shared aethnic roots in more than one direction, but we felt somethings were missed. I do like creative explorations of culinary crossovers and fusion, but some thing are best left authentic with experimentation done along the edges. Being used to Indian cuisine, the chaat was not exactly what we expected, and the Sabich was missing one of the main ingredients (hard boiled egg) and just had large slices of fried eggplant over a thin garnish of fresh vegies rather than a shepherd's salad. It came with a side of humus and a mango chutney which I assume was supposed to be a substitite for the traditionally sour and umami tasting fermented mango (Amba) sauce. It was almost like they were going through the motions of the ingredients, not their culinary role and effect. Amba is supposed to give a counter-punch of strong curry flavor to the smoothness of humus. I felt a sweet mild mango chutney, even though they are both technically mango chutneys, missed the point entirely. In my opinion they need to re-think their dishes from scratch. I do believe they can do it and do great if they go back to the basics. I wish them the best of luck from the bottom of my heart! The service was very nice and friendly! We loved the staff! Great vegan spot when you're visiting yellow springs! Lots of shareable options and plenty of outdoor seating. It was raining when we went and there was enough indoor seating too! We ordered the special of the week, rainbow noodles and the Shawarama and masala chaat. All were very flavorful and fresh. Very cool little spot off the main drag in Yellow Springs. Very friendly service - happy to guide you through the menu and explain their food. I went there for lunch on consecutive days ... I had a special, mushroom and cabbage bao bun. Delicious with umami and crunch. Also had the addictive fried mushrooms, fresh from a local farm. Today is had the hummus and felafel plate. The best felafel I've had outside of my mom's. Hummus was delicious. I also had the scallion pancake with hoisin and chili oil. Thin and chewy and delicious! I got a try taste of their chaat and it was light and delicious. I would drive to Yellow Springs to eat here and visit these folks again! read more

After a long day of hiking at Clifton Gorge and walking around Yellow Springs, MAZU was a welcome indulgence. This delightful vegan fusion restaurant combines Mediterranean and Taiwanese cuisine. The food was tasty, the employees were kind, and the service was quick. The restaurant was small and cosy and offered both indoor and outdoor seating. Come. Here. For anyone who enjoys food, MAZU was just amazing. Everyone was super friendly and there was such a sense of community when we came. The owner greeted us and gave us a run down of the menu and while we were waiting for food she was making efforts to recall repeat customers. Everything about MAZU felt comfortable, warm, and inviting. It was just a great space to be in, before we even got the food. Food was just so flavorful and well cooked and balanced. I ordered way too much, per usual, but thought the food was definitely worth the price and was so fresh and delicious that I wish I ordered more. We started with the guabao and the masala poori chaat, the latter being one of my favorite dishes. It has such a mix of textures, flavors, and spices that was so warming on a chill fall day. We also got the special of the day which was the sabich and I cannot speak highly enough of it. Fried potato, eggplant in a pita with salad and an amazing mango chutney? Yes, please! The falafel platter was also just outstanding and some of the best falafel I've ever had, vibrant and green and a hint of cardamom which worked so well. Not to mention all the drinks we ended up trying, all of which were well balanced and so refreshing. This was definitely a food destination for me and I can't wait to make the trip back out just to try more of the menu. WOW. We tried to go across the street, but they did not have any vegan options and were pointed here. Before we got in, they were giving samples of their falafel and it was some of the best I have had. We got the nachos, falafel, dan dan noodles, and their eggplant plate. The dan dan noodles were amazing and I wish I took them away from my bf because they were so creamy and with the chili oil were next level. The people taking your order walked the food out to us and it is pretty self serve. You have to get your own utensils and water, but the service is fast and friendly. It is a small place that is a little tucked away, but everyone is so friendly. I would considering coming back here just for the food because it is that good. Simply put...Mazu blew me away. It is worth going out of your way to catch the open hours. They operate Friday-Sunday from 11-2 only. The entrance is tucked back in an alley behind the Wine Emporium. Indoor and patio seating is available. Order at the counter with friendly staff and they call your name when your food is ready. Menu is not large but everything on it sounded delicious. If you like mango, you have to try the lassi. It is incredible. Thick, cold, creamy and not too sweet. The kofta had a kick and was a bit too salty. Poori was light and crispy. The hummus plate looked so good and next time I will not miss the scallion pancake. The food reminded me a bit of Joya's in Columbus and I mean that as the highest compliment. I usually wait TOO LONG to review, which leads me to forget the good/bad/ugly of the places I visit. NOT going to happen here, because MAZU is THAT good, and I don't want to forget a single detail!! Other than their (understandably...I guess!!) limited hours, this new, HIDDEN gem in downtown YS is PERFECT!! If you're lucky enough to catch them open (Friday-Sunday, 11am-2pm) you're in for a wonderful, well-presented, eclectic treat. Choose from Israeli/Middle Eastern, Asian, and Indian "street food" (generously sized apps) or entrees. I wanted a little bit of everything (as usual......) so I went for three of the street food choices, the scallion pancake, which came with fresh sliced cucumbers and several great dipping sauces, the masala poori chat, a surprising mixture of flavors and textures, and my favorite, the guabao steamed bun. Of course, I ordered MUCH too much, but had some wonderful leftovers for dinner later that evening. This place is a gem in Ohio. It's vegan, but it's so delicious and although I'm not vegan I enjoyed the flavors and colors of the dishes. I had an appetizer Scallion Pancake, (葱油饼）, it's tasty and sauces were delicious. Main entree was hummus and Falafels- everything was fresh, healthy and most importantly delicious. Went there for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Sort of a typical American melange cuisine, with items that vaguely come from (and sometimes combine food from) India, Taiwan, and the Levant. I'm a vegetarian, I went with my vegan daughter, and there was plenty to choose from. I personally had the. Dandan mian (擔擔麵), a noodle dish that was just a bit spicy. (The menu might exaggerate a tad how spicy the things it says are spicy actually are.) It was delicious, although for lunch more than ample. My daughter had fattoush, and we shared 蔥油餅 or scallion pancake, a dish I remember fondly myself from Taiwan. It was all very tasty, and the people behind the counter, taking orders and making food, were pleasantly chatty. The only drawback is it is a bit pricey. For lunch, my daughter and I paid over $40., which for Southwest Ohio is a bit much. Despite that, while sitting down and eating, we saw a number of apparent regulars coming in and picking up things they had ordered to go. But the food was yummy , and it's very distinctive, Worth a trip if you're not in Yellow Springs much. I've lived in Yellow Springs for 30 years, and if you've never been there, the town is worth a look too. read more

Everything was of the highest quality here - the food, the service, the atmosphere. They were very attentive to food allergies. This restaurant exceeded our expectations - the food was bursting with flavor, beautiful, and exciting. We started out ordering two dishes, and ended up with five by the end of the meal because we couldn't stop trying things once we realized the quality and thought put into each dish. Incredibly friendly cashier and cooks, with an open kitchen so it's easy to see how they cook! It's very busy, but the workers seem to be friends with a lot of the locals. Food: Dan Dan noodles were not similar to any Dan Dan noodles I've had. However, they were a delicious homemade noodle with a tahini sauce and fried mushrooms. The mazu roll was also great--some of the best falafel I've ever had, and tamarind sauce set it off quite nicely. I love the idea of serving it on a scallion pancake, and that worked taste wise, but the pancake was incredibly tough--we struggled to get a knife through it. read more

We had such a wonderful lunch today at MAZU. I ordered the Sabich which has fried eggplant. It was so unexpected in the best way. The eggplant was creamy under the light batter. Wow! I had the most amazing lunch today at MAZU in Yellow Springs. The atmosphere inside is fantastic(sitting at the bar was a great experience), the service is excellent and friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious! I had the Guabao, Yansu Mishrooms, and the Dandan noodles. They were all perfectly seasoned and extremely flavorful. I liked all three dishes, but the noodles stuck out to me as especially well done. For a lunch it's really a complete meal with all the cabbage, mushrooms , and greens. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu! read more

As a South Asian Indian myself, I was very excited when this eclectic restaurant opened in Yellow Springs. They serve a kind of fusion cuisine mixing Indian and Middle Eastern influences. On the down side, they are only open from 11 to 2 Friday through Sunday, with a Thursday takeout option. The food is in fact delicious although I found the tamarind sauce too tart and sour. I'm happy to report that the next time I visited Mazu the co-owner offered a mango chutney to offset the tart tamarind sauce. I found a combination of the two to be very satisfying in the potato curry dish. So, overall, I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to eat a different kind of cuisine that is both delicious and nutritious. read more

MAZU has quickly climbed to the top of best restaurants in Yellow Springs. It is a great local spot with a variety of options and fast/friendly service. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu but the creamy potato curry poori was especially delicious. Couldn't recommend this place more! read more
