Never have loved my hair this much

Got my hair done by Hannah and it was amazing!! The salon is so cute inside and great prices. Will be coming back for sure.

Cut, color, highlight by Darryl Allen at mb studio (front view)

Darryl Allen's artistry as a hair stylist is incredible! This salon (and Rochester overall) is extremely lucky to have someone with such amazing experience and talent. He just moved here a few months ago after owning Darryl Allen Salon in Nashville, TN (I found it on Google.) He has worked with many celebrities and photographers and can be seen in GQ, Vogue, and Allure. The man is an absolute genius... I went from long brown hair to short blonde and get stopped by women at least once a week asking who does my hair.

RIVAJETA IS INCREDIBLE. A forever customer.

Absolutely in love with this place. It is absolutely so adorably decorated and everyone is so friendly. The receptionist was super friendly over the phone. I made an appointment with Rivajeta (ruh-vee-ta). My boyfriend and I had previously discovered this studio when we were visiting/apartment hunting and he needed his hair cut. Rivajeta gave him an awesome cut and we both really enjoyed her warm, friendly, and charming personality so much that I knew when it came time for my hair cut I would book one with her. I know it is hard to judge someone's talent cutting women's hair based on a man's haircut... BUT we just liked her so much I figured, 'why not?'. SO I went to Rivajeta for a highlight and a cut (to fix my previously botched bob and much needed root cover-up). She listened to everything I wanted and gave extremely well-thought out suggestions and was NEVER pushy with anything. She always wanted to make sure I was comfortable and made me feel like my decisions were always on the forefront (which is actually pretty hard to come by these days). She took the time to explain exactly what she was doing and exactly WHY she was doing it. I felt like I was getting a lesson in cutting, coloring, and styling hair. It wasn't necessarily to educate me (which is an added bonus) but to ensure that we were on the same page, so that I didn't feel unsure (about our plan or her talent) and to respect me enough to let me In on what she was doing AS she was doing this. I personally love learning new things but this was just a whole other level of awesome. You can REALLY tell she knows her stuff (both in how she teaches it and in the final product). Also, she told me about all the workshops she attends monthly, showcasing her drive to constantly learn about something she is CLEARLY passionate about. I believe this makes her truly excellent. She made GENUINE conversation too. It wasn't forced, fake or scripted conversation that I feel a lot of other hairdressers unfortunately tend to fall into having either. She made me feel like my time was important to her and aimed to ensure that I was completely satisfied. It sounds like a no-brainer and that service should always be this way but it is SERIOUSLY nearly impossible to find people as genuine, caring, talented, and thorough as Rivajeta no matter what field you look into. I will never go to anyone else. I HIGHLY suggest making an appointment with her.

The salon itself was nice and the staff seemed friendly. At first, everything seemed fine, and I clearly explained how I wanted my hair styled. I have a short bob that can be styled in a lot of different ways. When my stylist parted my hair down the middle, I got a little nervous but hoped it would turn out okay. The entire service was done with just a round brush and blow dryer. When she finished, I was honestly disappointed and told her so. The style made me feel like I looked like a little boy, and I said I could have achieved the same result myself at home. She responded by saying that's just how my hair responds, but I disagreed because I've had my hair styled many times before and know what it's capable of. (Basically I called BS) I even offered to show photos of previous blowouts I've loved. What I asked for was simple, some volume with a slightly sleek finish. I also mentioned that my hair can be parted in different ways. At one point she suggested curling it, but after later looking at the salon's website, I noticed they charge extra for flat iron or curling iron work, which may explain why it wasn't initially offered. To her credit, she did try to fix it, and it looked better, but overall I still wasn't very happy with the experience. I paid, tipped, and moved on, but for $45, I personally didn't feel it was worth it. Unfortunately, I wouldn't return.

I had some long layers and balayage (I'll attach some of the family photos done by Alyssa Vanzo Photography so people can see!) Most recently I came in to get my hair darkened and shorter. Recalling the fondness my most fashionable (White) friend from college had for this place, I came to this place in August 2010. I had just received an iffy haircut from a cheap Asian hairdresser in Swillberg with rudimentary texturizing and fading skills and I wanted something a step above the standard 15-minute haircut. I figured if anyone could cut my difficult hair well, it would be these guys. At first glance, Fusion was all I had ever dreamed of in a salon. They had comfortable chairs and an extensive magazine collection in the waiting area, Vampire Weekend and other cool indie tunes pumping from the speakers, local art on the walls, and Harney & Sons tea in the pantry. The massive leather barber's chair in which I sat to get my haircut was even more comfortable than the chairs in the waiting room and a peppermint facial massage and hot towel treatment came with every haircut. At $30 plus tip, the price was a little steep, but I loved everything about this place. Except my haircuts. While Jes gave me decent, fashion-forward haircuts when I first started going there, it was never exactly what I asked for and I found more and more wrong with the end results as time went on. After about 5 months, I began noticing unevenness (I'm talking 1/2 inch difference from left to right sides) and my fade soon began to resemble a bowl cut. Admittedly, I have two large protrusions of bone on both sides of my head and my Asian hair is ultra straight, but over the years, I have discovered that these things could be compensated for by cutting my hair to a certain shape, rather than cutting it based on how it might look in a couple of weeks or how you believe my hair might eventually fall. Asian hair doesn't fall. Like a bad relationship, I continued going to Fusion probably much longer than I should have because I was comfortable. I liked the people who worked there, I liked the atmosphere, and the haircuts were satisfactory, at times. I knew how difficult it was for me to find someone who could actually cut my hair and I had tremendous anxiety when thinking about searching for a new salon. But I had to break it off. I'm not saying that Fusion Salon isn't a good place to get your haircut. I'm sure if I were a White woman looking to update her look or a White man asking for something easy, I'd probably still go here every three to four weeks. Unfortunately, I don't fall into either of these categories.

During my appointment I also told her I'd been cutting my own hair for years and wanted to keep my length but get rid of as much split ends as possible. She did exactly that and didn't cut too much. I felt like she really listens to what you want and delivers. It made me feel comfortable going shorter the second time and trying a new style.
