I mean, it's a decent transit hub. My only complaint is the bathrooms can be pretty gross.

There's no smell quite like the reek of Alewife. Yes, you can park, ride, eat at a basement Dunks, but it is not something to do unless it must be done. Escalators connecting the parking garage maze to the trains themselves are one direction only-- oftentimes, going down for some inexplicable reason. Get ready to get your steps in! If there was ever an elevator that looked like a death trap it would be this one. Careful on the stairs though, strategically placed buckets will catch water drips both from holes in the roof and from leaky pipes. I wouldn't bother paying for parking-- the fine is low at all MBTA garages and they rarely check. Overnight parking is permitted and there's nothing to scan or validate on the way out. read more

After parking on top floor we were confused how to get station, no signs on escalator direction or location going up or down. Station was clean when we were there. On the way to leave station in the dark, we noticed a lot of pedestrians crossing streets around building but hardly were able to see them, streetlights were either out or non-existent. The Cambridge terminus for the Red Line, I found Alewife to be a great station for intermodal transfer. There is a big parking deck and they have a solid busway if you're planning on heading further into the west suburbs beyond the service of the trains. Large island platform with trains on both sides. Complete handicapped accessibility with elevators and escalators between all the proper areas. Audible and visual announcements of the next train. A reasonable amount of seating both on the metro platform and at the various busway stops. The busway stops are numbered by route. It took me a couple of minutes to work out which ones go with which routes. Returning was easy as the bus stopped right at the top to get back to the metro. Is it the best station? No, but I am certainly a fan. read more

Although I'm not crazy about Park & Rides, this station is fairly convenient. Plenty of bus services stop or begin here, and both the Ashmont and Braintree red line services begin here. There is a somewhat decent selection in terms of retail. There is almost always a train waiting in the station, and they depart fairly quick compared to other MBTA stations. There's no need to worry about going on the Braintree track instead of the Ashmont track or vice versa as this station uses and island platform design, meaning the other train is right across the platform instead of requiring a crossover. In terms of parking, I'd recommend paying with the ticket machines in the main concourse instead of using the PayByPhone app as it never works. Uber picks up at the same place that the auto pick up is; go past the busway and follow signs for "Auto Pick Up". read more

Make sure to get here before 10am weekdays otherwise chances are the parking lot will be full. If you do arrive after the parking lot is full you have little options in the area and they aggressively tow so be careful. You're best bet is to park down the street at the mall and definitely do not park in the Summer Shack or Dunkin Donuts parking lots b/c you will be towed. I've seen a flatbed truck full after towing cars in the immediate area and that wasn't the only tow truck driving around looking either. The commute home around 5:30-6:30 can and usually is a pain with an exit line that can take up to 30 minutes (from Level 5, the top level) especially right around 5:30. A little known fact is that you can now use the "Pay By Phone" app to pay for your parking. read more

Let's see here: Pros *It is only $9 to park here, which is way cheaper than parking downtown. Cons *The garage is literally crumbling. *It sits in a heavily trafficked (autos, pedestrians and cyclists) location and is a nightmare to exit in the evening unless you are leaving after 6/6:30. *People cannot seem to figure out how to pay in the station before they leave and these same people cannot figure out how pay at the exit gates, which creates a nice line to wait in. *One of the elevators is usually out of service. *One of the escalators is usually out of service. read more

It was my first time using Alewife station to get into Boston. I arrived around 10:30 am on a Friday and I had to park on the very top, fifth level of the parking garage. So just be aware when you arrive. The escalators made it easy to get down to the first floor and after buying a ticket, boarding the train couldn't be easier. Parking on the weekdays is $9 a day. Considering this saves all the hassle of driving directly into Boston, I'd say the price is well worth it. read more

While in an extremely convenient location, and the station proper is in good shape, the garage is dangerously corrupted by weather and use. Lilly columns everywhere, many spaces closed due to crumbling beams and ceilings, pothole both open and covered by metal plates, there isn't a single aisle or floor that seems ready to drop concrete on cars or perhaps even collapse. It's downright scary. An alternative is to go go in Mass Ave a bit and park at Porter Square, which isn't able to accommodate the numbers of commuter cars Alewife handles. The MBTA is mum and should be ashamed of its silence, to say nothing of the garage itself. read more

OMG. If Dante had a 10th Circle of Hell, Alewife Station would be it. A few tips: - Don't ever expect to get a parking space after 9am on weekdays, you are playing Russian Roulette with 5 bullets. Be prepared with a good excuse for your boss when you then have to call in sick, because your back-up plan for parking anywhere near Alewife is non-existent. - If you stuck in the clusterfrack of traffic that exists during commuting times, you better give yourself an extra 15 minutes to get through the 1-mile gauntlet between the end of Rt 2 and the first traffic circle on Fresh Pond. Let's do the math... that works out to 0.25 miles per hour. And you should probably drop a Xanax and put on some Enya to make it through safely without your head exploding like that guy in Scanners. - Are you a gambler? Good. See those two trains waiting to leave the station? You have a 50/50 chance of picking the train that is going to leave first. Hope you're feeling lucky. - For your drive home, you might as well take up knitting... you will need something to do while sitting in your car, because on most weekday evenings, you will endure an excruciating 20-minute journey from your parking space to the exit of the parking garage. On the upside, you will be getting a great workout on your right calf as you are pumping the brake pedal for 20 minutes in the crawl to the exit. When you do get through the garage exit, be prepared to witness the worst of humanity in the most god-awful example of traffic flow planning ever devised by man. - GOD HELP YOU IF YOU DO NOT PRE-PAY YOUR PARKING TICKET IN THE STATION. There is NO way to pay at the gate except to wait for an MBTA employee to crawl out of the bowels of Alewife to walk to your car and collect your fee. DO NOT BE THAT GUY. Pros: - The daytime parking rate is $7, overnight is $8. - You can actually get a seat on the subway car. - They have secured bike cages if you are lucky enough to be in cycling distance. - If you are a fan of Yeltsin-era Soviet architecture, you will feel right at home. - If you have a fear of uniforms, you will have no problems at Alewife, as you could wander around for 10 minutes before spotting an MBTA employee. Some suggestions to the MBTA: - How about pro-actively providing alerts when the parking garage is nearing capacity, could that be so hard? Actually, the MBTA sub-contracts the parking garage operations to LAZ Parking and apparently there is ZERO incentive for them to make the parking situation any better. In fact, the MBTA is cancelling their contract early with LAZ (as of Sept 2016) because they have done such a pi$$-poor job of running the garage. - How about adding the 50 lines of code that would allow the signs to indicate which train was going to leave the station first? - How about allowing people to swipe a credit card or use Apple Pay/Android Pay to exit the garage. - Three words: satellite parking lot - Two words: fire everybody Some suggestions to the City of Cambridge: - drop a small nuke on that part of Cambridge and start over... honestly, no matter what you do over there, it's a traffic nightmare... i have been around long enough to remember when there was a giant rotary at the end of Rte 2 and i swear traffic was much better back then. read more

Waited here to catch a GoBus, so this review is only for the bus terminal area. When I was here in the late afternoon, the bus station was desolate and pretty much vacant except for several homeless people who were camping out and a mouse that was running around inside the waiting area. The waiting area does not seem to be climate controlled and it was freezing inside. The floors were dirty and there were piles of some gross substance, which I believe was bird droppings all over the floor. The seating consists of long wooden benches inside and out. I'm really glad I didn't show up earlier than necessary for my bus because this is definitely not a place you want to hang out in very long. read more

The Alewife station is great! It is for MANY MANY reasons! Let me just start by saying I use this station just about every other weekend this year when I go to Boston! Its location is GREAT! Because you dont need to drive into Boston to get here! HUGE plus for me! I hate the traffic Boston sometimes offers. The station also has a lot of parking. I find it best to park up on the 3rd level and just park in a corner! This way its easy to find your car and the 3rd level all most always seems empty to me. So if you worry about your car getting hit or bumped. This is some advice for you! Parking here is very cheap! $7 a day or $8 a night! I dont think there is a better deal than this in the area. I know in Boston the cheapest I could find it was $15 a night. So being at about half the price you dont really need to think about it! The tickets for the train are also very reasonable! You can do it a few different ways! One you could get a card and load up some money and pay $1.75 a scan. Not to bad! The second choice you can do and get a 7 day pass for a cheap $15. The monthly card goes for around $60 if I remember right. I always end up getting the 7 day pass. I can easily use over $15 in one weekend just going back and worth in the city! So if your there for a weekend that's probably your best bet. Then you dont need to keep refilling the card! Also keep in mind all of the options are also good for the bus lines as well and ANY color train route! The only thing about this station that gets to me as I'm sure you can read in other reviews. The bathrooms are bad! I dont think they are ever cleaned. Even the sink is nasty. Stay clear of this. Just go down and get on your train! Wait it out until your next stop! So over all the station is very helpful for parking and tickets for public transportation. Its not over prices and I have never ran into a problem on the T. Trains always seem to be on time and one is always sitting there when I get down there! So if your going to Boston or anywhere the T can bring you, go here! This location is good, right at the end of the route two lane constrictor, with the red line and all of Boston ahead of you. The concept is great, park here and take public transit into the city, leaving the traffic worries behind. Unfortunately, the station reminds you of a Stalinist housing block in Moscow, and the few employees I found were unhelpful to the point of hostility. Since I come here only rarely, I don't know my way around, and the lack of signs makes it an adventure. I was meeting someone for dinner at Bertuccis, but wandered around the garage for a while looking for the restaurant. There aren't even visible signs for the exits, which are required by federal law. So sue them. They are the government. The place is very dark and dingy at night, with corners where cars come whizzing around, the drivers faces showing surprise that they just missed you. There aren't many sidewalks, so you are on the road most of the way. At one turn there were some chunks of concrete in the roadway, ranging in size from a hockey puck to a loaf of bread. You could see the places in the ceiling where the garage is crumbling. Fortunately there were no cars parked under the crumble zone, but I looking up as I went on, and I saw several places where the structure is failing. I finally saw the Bertucci's sign on the side of the building, and puzzled out a way to get there, down some narrow concrete stairwells. Fortunately I didn't meet any muggers on the way, because it would be a very bad place to get held up. I had read that you should pay in the lobby before getting into your car. The only trouble was, I couldn't find a lobby. There was an office and two small tollbooths at the entrance/exit, but they were all deserted. Finally I decided to put it on my credit card. The moral of this story: don't park your nice car here, and maybe wear a helmet. read more

Ah yes, Alewife, everyone's favorite historical landmark. Over there, the famous battle site where in 1998 two JNCO-wearing teens fought over whether the new Insane Clown Posse album came out this week or next. And here, on the top floor of this very parking lot, marks the spot where in late February 2010, Lindsay "The Rock Johnson" B. found her car battery dead at 4 AM, and wishing to inform/bother no one, spent the most boring/freezing/unfoundedly terrifying 45 minutes of her life waiting for AAA. Yelp miscategorization aside, Alewife actually isn't too bad of a place if you're in the burbs north of Boston and need to get into the city. The garage houses 2700 cars and 175 bikes, and parking is $7 for 24 hours. Good place to leave your car and disappear from your parents' house for a few days when you're home for the summer from college. I wouldn't know, just guessing. Alewife Station also connects to the Minuteman bike path, which you can ride all the damn way to Bedford, if you really want to get somewhere where there's absolutely nothing to do. And, since no one has mentioned it yet: The alewife is a species of herring. The front of the body is deep and larger than other fish found in the same waters, and its common name is said to come from comparison with a corpulent female tavernkeeper ("ale-wife"). Talk about end of the line! This place is built up for one purpose... to store the vehicles of commuters. There's tons of bike racks, and a huge a** parking garage. The garage is open 24 hours, and takes cash only ($9 bucks a day i think). It's easily accessible from Route 2 if you are going East (from 95). I have found it to prefer it over the orange line for that reason. You never know which of the 2 trains docked there will leave first, so just hop on one and wait. The bathrooms are so dirty they'll magically give you the ability to 'hold it' ... i'm talking even at urinals people. I washed my hands in there, and i think they actually got dirtier. There is also a maze of escalators going to specific floors in the parking garage, so remember where you parked. However if you don't like walking down stairs, take the elevator... it's the easiest way to go down. but yeah, if you are living in suburbia, and are trying to get to a T line, this place is wicked easy to get to... unlike that infamous station 'oak grove' which I have only heard legends about but never been able to find (I always wind up in Malden Center, trying to get there, wtf!) read more

One of the very few MBTA stations with restrooms! Granted, the restrooms are disgusting, no soap or paper towel (in fact, the soap and paper towel dispensers have been ripped off the walls), and just generally icky, but at least it's something. The station is large but signage is excellent for an MBTA station. It's easy to find the busway and the bus bays are clearly labeled with the route numbers. Make sure you know where you're going, because employees are nowhere to be found. read more

Being in close proximity of Alewife station and the ability to park there and take the T into downtown in under 20 minutes is what I miss (and still do) the most about living in Burlington. The Alewife parking is covered except for the top floor, ideal for longer term parking in the winter with anticipated snow storms. Rate is $8 for overnight parking and otherwise $7 flat rate. Say you have designated Alewife as the meeting point for a group of friends. You are taking off for the weekend on a whitewater rafting trip and this is where you carless folk are meeting the designated driver. You live half a mile from Alewife so you figure you'll just walk... Except. There are no sidewalks on portions of Route 16 leading to Alewife, leaving you to drag your wheelie duffel bag, bouncey bounce bounce, over the rough terrain of rocks and dirt and maybe some hypodermic needles. So instead you just walk to Davis and take the train one stop. I have had actual train-taking experiences at Alewife. It has a nice circle where cars can stop for pickup (not the case with other Red Line stations). It is close to such fine institutions as Bertucci's and Lanes 'n Games. It has a garage where you can park for cheap(ish) rates and head into Boston. But the traffic circle outside gets horribly, awfully, catastrophically clogged. Seriously, don't EVER drive near here between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays (and probably not on weekends, either). So, it really isn't all that convenient for cars. And as we've seen, not really for pedestrians, either... Would it be so hard to put in sidewalks? read more

Alewife is the kind of place that only exists in legends. I passed by this beginning of the Red Line (or is it the end of the line -- well, that's one of those optimist/pessimist kind of rhetorical questions), but finally visited this Death Star of a T Station yesterday. Parking is PLENTIFUL and at $7 per car, it's reasonable enough that you're still spending less than taking the Commuter Rail -- especially when you go with other people. Depending on where you're going, the ride can be long since this is on the extreme edge of Cambridge, but it's still much closer than Newton's Riverside. My only issue with this station is that they only take cash and the cars form a long line when exiting. I can't even imagine that kind of nightmare this causes during rush hour. Even if two booths are open, the traffic this spills into has to be horrific. The price is right for overnight parking. It's $7 for the first day and $8 each subsequent day. I'm not sure if there's a limit for the number of days you can stay there, but this is a good getaway if you're traveling by train out of South Station, which is also on the Red Line. read more

Let me elaborate: -It's easy to get to from Route 2(my preferred approach), or the Minuteman bike trail. -It's simple to navigate around the station itself, as it has two tracks which are both on the same platform. -It also has plenty of inexpensive parking(I've never had trouble finding a space). -It's fairly modern and well kept(except for the restrooms, as others have pointed out!). Spotted dead center in the confluence of several apocalyptically horrendous traffic patterns, Alewife is pretty much DOA straight out of the gate. It's a bitch to get to, it's an even worse bitch to get out of, and it generally smells of piss (when it doesn't actually just smell of straight up raw sewage, as it did for much of the summer of 2011, when I'm assuming all the pipes got backed up) and exhaust. It also must serve as a reform school for the recalcitrant of MBTA employees, as everyone always seems to be in a foul mood, and they all sequester themselves in their little glass encased bunker refusing to acknowledge that every single bus coming to or out of the station is over 30 minutes late. I see you in there!! Just tell me if if I'm better off just walking the three miles home instead of waiting (and waiting and waiting) for the goddamn 79! One star, plus one star because it is actually rather cozily heated in the winter, waiting for all those buses that never come. read more

New years day, tons of customers. Only ONE employee at the entrance and exit gates. I guess the biggest problem is when customers do NOT pay inside, the woman has to go in to the office each time to make change and charge them. The city of Boston needs to put some money into this station, more signage and a better payment system at the gate. Also, if customers don't pay inside, charge them more. They won't forget twice. Really though, it's time the Boston T had a major clean up and systems analysis for ease of use. If Boston wants tourist dollars, it's got to invest in this system. read more

This parking garage is terrible and is now increasing from $7/day to $10/day in August 2018. The structure is falling apart - there are leaks from the roofs anytime it rains, there are temporary metal supports holding the levels up that take up prime parking spots for more guests and concrete will sometimes fall down from the ceiling onto cars. The exit system is horrendous and it has taken me up to an hour to exit this station before at night. Either the ticket machines are broken or there is too much traffic outside since both exits are on the same street side and there is heavy pedestrian traffic. If you are increasing the price by $3/day, you better be fixing these issues ASAP. read more

Alewife is sometimes a convenient way to access Cambridge and Boston. The reason why it's only 'sometimes' is that there are not enough parking spaces. Arriving after 9am may mean that you will likely not get a space. If the MBTA wants to increase their revenue all they need to do is add more parking spaces. They will in turn more fully utilized their existing train schedule. read more

This is a very good choice for people coming from the north to get into Boston. you can drive in to exactly where traffic starts to become crazy and drop off your car in the lot that holds 2700 cars and even take you clothes to the cleaners in the lower level so that on the way home it will be ready and you take the red line to where you want to go, it passes Harvard Sq. into South station. read more

I parked at Alewife and took the train for the first time at the end of February (2012) and had no issues. Getting in and out was fine (I consider myself a good driver and I had my navigator with me so I knew where go). The signs to the trains are not as visible as they could be. I wasn't sure which direction to go in when I got out of my car. Finding a place around 12:30 p.m. on a Thursday was a little bit of a search but I did find a place within 5 minutes of arriving and it was close to the stairs. The $7 is reasonable but if it goes up, I won't be able to afford to take advantage of this great convenience. This is the station I drive to when I want to access Boston. Whether it's to pickup/drop off a person or actually traveling to Boston myself, I'd rather park and ride than to navigate the busy streets of the inner city. Positives: - Easy to get to as it's right off of Route 2 eastbound. - Usually enough temporary parking spaces to wait for people - No one harasses you in the temporary parking spaces even if you've been there for hours waiting. - Dunkin Donuts right before the turnstiles if you're hungry - Usually but not always plenty of parking in the garage - Escalator and elevator Negatives: - Navigating the turns of the garage may be hazardous - Escalator sometimes break down - I've been seeing the parking fee rise over the years. - Sometimes the garage gets really full and you worry about not finding parking even at the top level. - Getting out of the station and back on to Route 2 can be hazardous due to the timing of the traffic lights. read more

Alewife Station. If you've lived anywhere West of Cambridge, you know it well. The end of the line for the Red Line. What's good: 1) $7/night parking (that is, $7 per 24 hours). Cheapest parking in Cambridge or Boston. Used to be $4 in the good old days (not so long ago). But $7 is still a bargain. Even Rt 128 station, which is near nothing on cheap land charge about double that. For some reason, Cambridge or the MBTA has not seen fit to start doing a total price gouge on this station. Yet. Just wait. It won't be long until someone remembers to do that. 2) It's the end of the Red Line. Easiest station in the world (well, MBTA world) to navigate. Only one platform, which houses two trains. You can't make a mistake. Which is probably why the MBTA employees that work here don't bother manning their information stations. 3) The Red Line is the best line in the MBTA system and will take you to Cambridge, South Station (where you can catch the "Silver Line" bus to the airport, Amtrack, commuter rail, etc), Park Street+Downtown Crossing, where you can catch the decrepit Orange and Green lines to go into Boston, etc. What sucks: 1) Parking fills up by around 9am--and that assumes that they haven't roped off a good portion of the lot for construction, as they've been doing for the past 100 years or so. 2) If you try to leave at rush hour (4:30 to 6) you can wind up spending as much as an hour getting OUT of the lot, since everything empties into a single lane and two ticket booths. The suckage tends to trump the good stuff for daily commuters who don't want to both come in really early and leave really early or really late. If you happen to arrive when the lot has prematurely filled up (not uncommon on bad weather days or construction years), then you have no other options: Too bad, you lose. What are you gonna tell your boss this time? But if you want to use the lot for off peak travel, it's great. read more

You should definitely have a credit card if you are parking here!! They should have a giant sign outside saying that if parking here ensure you have a credit card! The company that owns the parking garage has signs that ask that you pay in the lobby prior to leaving for parking. The machines themselves have options for cash and credit cards, but the machines accepting cash were all broken. The T station attendant is not affiliated with the parking garage and said to pay at the gate. When I drove to the gate, the parking garage attendant said credit card only, even after I explained about the broken machines and explained what the T attendant told me. Luckily, I had one available, but would have had a huge problem otherwise!! I think they SHOULD have a cash option at the gate, especially if the lobby cash machines don't work! People should be warned about this!! The spaces themselves are decently sized, and luckily there's plenty of parking. Leaving this garage and merging onto route 2 can be a nightmare! You REALLY have to watch the traffic! There is a traffic circle that merges with your lane and the lights are coordinated to be green at the same time! This is a traffic accident waiting to happen! This intersection should be timed better! read more

I don't mind Alewife Station, it's A-OK. That's probably because I've never had to drive and park there. It doesn't seem to matter if it's 1 in the morning and every other street's deserted, Alewife Brook Parkway always manages to be packed right by the T station with cars driven by irate people just itching to give you the finger. Here's the solution to this: Forget driving there. Take the 79 or the 350 or one of the other handful of buses that come through there. Problem solved! As to the station itself, it's big and sorta clean. They've got a Dunkin' Donuts, though I've never eaten anything from it so I can't speak to the freshness of that muffin or bagel you just purchased. I have never seen more disgusting bathrooms in my life, though. I was having a serious bathroom attack when I walked in, but upon further inspection, I realized I just didn't have to go anymore. But on the plus side, most other T stations don't even have bathrooms to begin with. Kudos to Alewife for that. read more

Got there at 10:00 AM today, totally full, had to pay $7 just to leave. No attendant on duty. Lots of construction, cars parked not in spaces. Doesn't seem like anyone cares. While when it used to work, it was great, if you can't get here early to get a space, I'd advise going somewhere else. read more

In addition to being a great parking place for commuters coming into Boston/Cambridge from west or north of Boston, the garage is also a great alternative for local residents to park their cars during a snowstorm! Most residences in the immediate area only have outdoor parking options (driveway or street). So if you live in the area and don't want to have to shovel out your car after a snowstorm, you can't beat the price of $7 or $8 (overnight) to park your car during the storm, then drive it out after all the snowplowing is done. read more
