    Alewife Station MBTA

The Cambridge terminus for the Red Line, I found Alewife to be a great station for intermodal transfer. There is a big parking deck and they have a solid busway if you're planning on heading further into the west suburbs beyond the service of the trains. Large island platform with trains on both sides. Complete handicapped accessibility with elevators and escalators between all the proper areas. Audible and visual announcements of the next train. A reasonable amount of seating both on the metro platform and at the various busway stops. The busway stops are numbered by route. It took me a couple of minutes to work out which ones go with which routes. Returning was easy as the bus stopped right at the top to get back to the metro. Is it the best station? No, but I am certainly a fan.

Make sure to get here before 10am weekdays otherwise chances are the parking lot will be full. If you do arrive after the parking lot is full you have little options in the area and they aggressively tow so be careful. You're best bet is to park down the street at the mall and definitely do not park in the Summer Shack or Dunkin Donuts parking lots b/c you will be towed. I've seen a flatbed truck full after towing cars in the immediate area and that wasn't the only tow truck driving around looking either. The commute home around 5:30-6:30 can and usually is a pain with an exit line that can take up to 30 minutes (from Level 5, the top level) especially right around 5:30. A little known fact is that you can now use the "Pay By Phone" app to pay for your parking.

11pm on a weekday and there's STILL a line to leave. This is after waiting 5 mins already.

I mean, it's a decent transit hub. My only complaint is the bathrooms can be pretty gross.

I find it generally clean and well-lit. Benches are cleaner than those of Green or Orange. Not sure what others are referring to!

I know you can park overnight, but is the garage accessible for me to retrieve my car 24 hours? For example, if I park in the afternoon, and return at 2 in the morning, will I be able to get my car? Thank you!

Last time I was there it was accessible all hours of the night. You pay for parking inside and insert the card upon exit.

It would be very unfortunate if you were running late and needed to swipe again. Yep that's definitely happened to me. Thankfully this one isn't located in the depths underground like Porter Square requiring multiple long stair cases/escalators to resurface. Aside from that logistical annoyance, I also have a horror story about how I was trapped on the red line trying to get to Seaport for an event for well over 40 minutes. There were issues with our train and if you know the Inbound line between Kendall/MIT to Charles MGH there is a vertical incline to clear the Longfellow bridge between the stations. (We didn't make it far before trouble happened.) Unfortunately the train struggled to climb and remained stuck waiting for assistance and updates. Disturbingly every 5 minutes or so we could feel gravity sliding the car back a few feet as well. I felt bad for the train operators who announced "we apologize for this inconvenience, we will get this train moving momentarily" every few minutes. The apology while appreciated lost the impact after the first few iterations. I was extremely late for my event, which thankfully I was not presenting or speaking. The worst aspect was we were trapped. No additional cars behind us until they decided to hitch our dead train to another to propel us to the next station where of course we all poured out at Charles MGH in the overcrowded station. Ever since that incident I have been wary of any red line delays.

The station has a minimal amount of cover from rain but it's not much. You're going to be experiencing the weather here for sure. It has some handicapped access with a portable ramp for wheelchairs to access the higher platforms of the Green Line trains. There are no ticket machines or turnstiles here.
