We had lunch during our visit to Richmond and McAlister's offered a great selection sandwiches, salads, soups and baked potatoes. I had the honey BBQ pork sandwich which I devoured wishing I had left overs. Husband ordered grilled chicken Caesar which was plentiful in size. Next time we're visiting we will definitely make McAlister's a stop to try more from their menu. McAlister's Deli is a great restaurant with different sandwiches, salads, drinks, desserts and more! I had the Sweet and Smoky Chicken Sandwich, Potato salad, and Coke Zero. The sandwich is like a barbecue sandwich with the sauce on it like barbecue sauce. The potato salad is great. The whole meal is delicious! The only disappointment is that they did not have the Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake available. I like cheesecake, and I wanted to try it. It would have made a great picture. The atmosphere is nice and the place is very clean. Servers are friendly and helpful. You place your order at the counter and they bring it to your table. When you pay with a card, you are asked for a tip. Seriously. According to the menu, one side is included with your sandwich selection. The sides we chose have an "up charge" which is NOT disclosed on the menu. Paid over $30.00 for two sandwiches which were OK. $10.00 for each sandwich and an "up charge" for a small cup of fruit and mac-n-cheese. On the up side, the sweet tea was excellent. My second time visiting a McAlister's and it was just "okay"... the restaurant itself was very clean and organized, and has a TON of seating. I stopped in around 3pm to order a carry-out meal for a late lunch; considering the time, there wasn't a soul in the parking lot (I almost believe the place to be closed). I walked in and was able to order right away! The woman working the register was very polite and engaging in conversation. After I ordered, I was told to wait at the other end of the counter for my meal. Now, I'm not familiar with how long an order typically takes to make here, and I wasn't in a hurry to get out the door, but I'd say I waited about 15 minutes for my sandwich and side of mac n' cheese. As I waited, a manager walked by and asked if I had been helped, which I had. I'm assuming my wait time was longer than normal because the woman at the register kept apologizing and even threw in some free pickle spears. I ordered the spicy turkey sandwich which looked like it had just been thrown together - very sloppy. The food is always good and fresh and hot. The service is pretty quick and the servers are nice. The place is always clean, however lately they seem to be blocking off half of the dining room at 6:00pm and people are forced to sit right next to each other. Most people prefer to have an open table between them and the next table when possible. I think the staff might be getting lazy and not wanting to sweep the floor more than once a night. I hear other people commenting on this and moving the chairs and sitting in the blocked off areas. read more

My very first time there at a friend's recommendation was not very good. I ordered ultimate nachos, the chips were stale, and the avocado was so hard that I couldn't cut it with a fork. I did not complain, but my friend did. I had only taken a couple of bites. It was inedible. Long story short, they couldn't find our order, and I left without eating or a refund for the nachos. I did receive a refund for the nachos the following day and an email from the owner after posting a Google review of my experience. I was asked to email them, which I did without response. After about four days, I emailed them again. I was told that it was a mistake that I had been emailed back, but for some reason, it never got sent. They asked for my address and was told that two VIP passes would be put in the mail immediately to make it up to me. Needless to say, I have never heard from them, nor did I ever get any mail from them. I'm afraid that McAlister's is off my list of places to eat. read more

Second time eating at this place. Both times it looks appealing to the eye. The place is clean and fresh looking. The menu had an appeal also. Lots of nice lettuce type salads on the menu. The menu made them sound really good. The selection of soups were also very appealing. It was hard to decide because they all sounded so good. Everyone was so friendly. And then the food came. The romaine lettuce had that slimly looking lettuce mixed into it. I told the lady and she said they considered that fresh. My chicken and dumpling soup looked like guey gunk. The taste was of flour and water. Another person at our table got a half sandwich except the half she got was the side where hardly any meat was. The ultimate test is: will I go back? That is why I put two starts for a 20% chance of that happening. read more

I've been here many, many times since they opened last year, and I can say I've never had a bad experience. Their menu is quite large, the food has always been fantastic, and the people working there are friendly. And their tea is by far the best in town. While yes, the staff is on the young side (many are teenagers), I've found them to be perfectly capable and well managed, as opposed to a review I read that stated the opposite. Obviously, one's experience can differ greatly from another's, but due to the fact that I work long hours, I unfortunately eat out often, and I usually end up visiting McAlister's weekly. I've never had any issue with the staff whether it be in regards to their timeliness, behavior, or service. In fact, I quite like the staff. And this is coming from a 34 year old that's, quite honestly, not particularly overly fond of children. To get back to the food, I have found many things to enjoy at McAlister's. Their Club is fantastic, as well as the Smokey Pepper Jack Turkey and French Dip. I also love their Garden Fresh Turkey and Turkey Cobb, and they always get the changes I ask for right. (I'm part of the anti-honey mustard brigade and almost always substitute the given cheese for sharp cheddar.) And that's before I even get to the soup! I'll keep it short and say my favorites are their Broccoli Cheddar and Fire Roasted Veggie. On top of that, they have great baked potatoes with varying toppings and really good salads. Honestly, there's not much more I can ask for when it comes to this place. Probably the only thing you WON'T find at McAlister's is food soaked in grease and deep fried. And that's EXACTLY what I love about them. If you crave the taste of old grease, everything tasting the same and covered in breading, only serving plain white bread/buns, and slathered in mayo, then you can probably pick any given burger joint and find that there. We usually order to-go online, and despite missing items every time, we've overlooked this and been generally satisfied. Today, however, the website crashed after I made my order and told me to call the restaurant to finish my order. No big deal. I called to fix the issue. I'm not sure who answered the phone, but it was a man and he was considerably rude. I was treated like an inconvenience to him---I've been in the restaurant and seen most of the employees propped up against the wall on their cell phones, so I'm certain my call couldn't have been too much of an inconvenience. I appreciated that he could be busy with lunchtime and even apologized if this call was a disruption (which it wasn't. Customer=always right, right?). He sighed into the phone like I was bothering him. Don't go to work if you don't want to be there, sir. It is frustrating to get treated poorly when we are calling to make an order, give our money, and receive a product. You have a business; don't you want to complete the tasks at hand to keep that business going? Please don't disrespect your patrons. read more

Recently, I purchased for the first and last time from here. I ordered a wrap and I kid you not, there was less than a whole slice of turkey on my wrap. It was a salad in a dried up cover. Of course, maybe the chef was not available because he was visiting with his family in the lobby....maybe the dishwasher made it....yeah maybe. Nice clean environment. Sandwiches are very good size and contains lots of meat. Mashed potatoes is one of the sides they offer. Thought that was unusual for a deli. They were good though. They have a pickle bar that you can help yourself to. Server asked us if we wanted refills. Didn't even have to walk up the bar to get refills. Friendly staff. read more

Quite possibly the WORST place to eat in Richmond. The food is never made properly and I had to send a club back 3 times because they kept messing it up. Its a club sandwich, not that complicated. I ordered as it came but without honey mustard. They served me a BLT first. Ok, mistakes happen. They bring me my sandwich back and they just added turkey to the blt. No extra piece of bread and it was on white bread not wheat as the menu stated. Then they brought me back the same sandwich again but literally just put another piece of white bread on top of the sandwich and said its the same thing and I can disassemble it and remake it at the table. Finally a manager came out and said well its basically the same. I said please start from scratch and make me a club with no honey mustard. She says ok and brings back a new sandwich with honey mustard. I just ate it because I was so far over it. It was disgusting. I had other problems before that but that was the last straw. read more

We've tried McAlister's twice, the first time we thought might've been so-so because they'd recently opened. But the second time confirmed our first impressions. Overpriced for average food. Our last visit I just got a baked potato and cup of chili, while my companion had a club sandwich and cup of soup ... which racked up a $28 bill. And the food wasn't even all that special. My chili was the type you might expect in a gas station pump for topping hotdogs, finely ground meat (I hope), no beans, nothing else. The potato was lackluster, with cheese on top that looked like it had set under a heat lamp for the 10-mins we were waiting for our meal to be delivered to the table. And a pet peeve of mine is when butter is served ice cold, I could barely scrape it out of the little cup, and just putting it on the potato brought it down to a barely warm temperature. Another tiny cup of sour cream wasn't even enough for me to finish my potato, and the servers basically just drop the food and run (it seemed). With that said, the atmosphere is nice, clean, comfortable. If they'd pay more attention to the little food and details of good service, it might be worth the added cost. read more
