I visited McAllister Deli in Summerville for lunch. This is located in a plaza with plenty of parking. The restaurant was busy, but the line moved quickly. The staff was friendly and attentive so no mistakes with our order. I had the Savannah Chopped Salad. This was very fresh! Lots of greens, goat cheese, cranberries, grilled chicken and pecans with a sherry shallot vinegarette dressing. The portion was huge! It was delicious. The restaurant and restrooms were clean. Once you order a server delivered food to your table. The manager checked on us twice to refill drinks and check that the food was tasting good. There are plenty of fresh artisan sandwiches, soups, sides and salads. Something for everyone. You definitely want to have their sweet tea. They offer a tea club card that gives free tea after you purchase so many teas. I recommend giving McAllister's a try. Great and fresh food. The pulled pork was less than warm and slightly dry. We took it to go so we microwaved it. If everything was hot and not overcooked maybe it would have been awesome. There were 4 people behind the counter, but only one was taking orders. I was third in line, but waited over 10 minutes to place my order. Another cashier came from the back and helped with orders. I've come to this McAlisters Deli several times. I don't usually have an issue with them but the last time I ordered to-go, I was very disappointed. I always order the same dish. Pick two: southwestern chicken sandwich and garden salad. This time around, the chicken sandwich I purchased (and usually order) seemed flat and not full. After a couple bites, I decided to inspect. Alas, nothing but three tiny chicken strips were in the sandwich. Nothing like the sandwich I usually get. It was sad and I would understand if the chicken just fell out of the sandwich but no. The manager on duty was heard rudely talking about a customer who had their order prepared incorrectly and had asked for it to be fixed. I took my kids to try McAlister's Deli for the first time and we were pleasantly surprised. It was very good food, very comparable to Panera Bread. To start with the negatives: The kids meals are too small, not worth the price, I recommend ordering a normal size meal for the kids. They get full and you don't spend much more honestly. The other negative was that the kids meals didn't come with a drink, in very fine print they charge you almost $2 to add one! A mistake I definitely learned from a $6 up-charge later. They also fine print the almost $3 up charge for adding soup to a meal. My bill ended up being pretty pricey without me realizing why until I got an itemized receipt. My bad though, always read the fine print, right? The positives are many: Even though they charge so much for kid drinks, the cups are ones they can take home and the straws are fun which the kids loved. There are lots of options for vegetarians, which made my daughter and I both happy. Their veggie sandwich is SO good. They have loads of different types of veggies instead of just cucumber and tomato like most sandwich shops. The grilled cheese was delectable and the broccoli cheddar soup was divine. Frankly, it was probably worth the up-charge. The Mac and cheese was really good, not the kraft junk most places serve. Last but certainly not least, the service was great. Very kind employees. The lovely employee, Destiny, in particular, was very accommodating to our family. I had the pick 2 meal where you can choose from half of a salad, sandwich, spud, or soup. I had the veggie sandwich and the new Savannah chopped salad. I don't think they have transitioned their menu for fall/winter yet. I was looking for some chili & warm/spicy flavors for the cold day. We love the food and never had a problem with any staff until today. My husband (who was in his digiflauge) was treated like garbage. We ordered carry-out in person and waited over 20 minutes. He asked an employee, thin black woman with a blue "medical" mask, where are our food was-- we've been waiting a long time. She immediately went over to the delivery shelf and found it. It has been there for 15 minutes. This is not our first rodeo-- whenever we order carry-out in person, they always call your name out. This didn't happen-- no big deal, right? Mistakes are made. This employee immediately said with an attitude, "Well, I didn't put the food there." My husband said, "How long has it been sitting here?" She replied, "I don't know." (it's easy to find out because the time is on the receipt which was attached to the bag) She continued to say, "We have new employees." There was no "I'm sorry" "Let me give you a cookie or a drink." No apology whatsoever -- just looked at us with a "go pound sand" attitude. I was there last week and did the same ritual-- ordered in person, carry out. I saw the same employees there last week as I did today and they called out my name. I was there for 15 minutes last week waiting, and I recognized all of them. I am not sure why I keep thinking this place will be better each time I come. It almost seems to get worse. My husband and I came for lunch and it was just DIRTY. Most of the tables were full of dirty dishes, food, and trash. There was a steady amount of people coming in and trying to find seats and there was plenty open but nowhere to sit that was clean. Our food came out and I ordered potato soup and received potato salad. I sent it back and it took about ten minutes for my soup to come out. Well I've eaten here numerous times and haven't done a review. I ate here today actually, which reminded me of not having had submitted a review. So during COVID19, you're able to go in and eat here. This is a plus. The food is pretty good. Good sandwiches, baked potatoes. The prices are not bad. The staff are great. As for the staff, and today's experience I can't leave this out. Napkins and straws are no longer available for you to grab for yourself, clearly because of COVID19. Today, a young man brought me my food and drink. This included a straw and some napkins. The napkins however were delivered in a ball which he'd created by crushing the napkins into his fist. I could not help but think that; 'every inch of every napkin were touched by his bare hands.' I noted later that moments before he brought me my food, he picked up a carpet at the entrance of the place. I observed no moment wherein he washed his hands. Go back to the napkins....imagine someone releasing a fist above your table. Out rolls a ball of napkins, which fall to the table. You wanna wipe your mouth with these? OMG! What has happened to this place? We've always liked McAlister's but each time we have come it's gotten a little worse each time. The food is up to par but the cleanliness of their bathrooms is just awful. Makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like. The bathroom sink has curly hairs all over the sink and counter. There is toilet paper on the floor in the stalls. There are also used paper towels on the floor and counters. This bathroom has not been cleaned at all today - possibly for a few days. To top it off, the dining room has grapes, tomatoes and other random food smashed into the floor. An employee Ca by and swept but didn't even sweep that up! This is our last visit to this location.
