Hmmm. Not sure what to make of this place. I did just move here from New England and I like southern food, but something about this place didn't do it for me... My husband and I came in for dinner and sat at the bar. We started with the cheese fritters & bacon jam. We initially thought the bacon jam was missing, but the fritters were great so we just kept eating them! When we got down to the last one, we both realized the "odd looking fritter" in the bowl that we were both avoiding, was the jam (oops!). It was a similar color and shape to the fritters but we both just laughed about avoiding it. For my entree, I was sold on the "award-winning" shrimp & grits that were featured on the Today show (as per their menu). Surprising that this meal made it that far as it didn't taste like anything special to me. It was not bad but very basic/plain; so basic that it felt like something was missing. really wanted to like Poogan's Southern Kitchen, but unfortunately the only thing that seemed Southern was the name on the sign. I ordered the country fried steak, and "country fried" turned out to be more like "burnt fried." The breading was overcooked, and the sausage gravy was so heavily seasoned that it completely overpowered the dish instead of complementing it. Good Southern gravy should be rich, creamy, and balanced--not something that buries every other flavor. The Brussels sprouts were the opposite problem--underseasoned and bland. The whipped potatoes lacked the light, fluffy texture you'd expect from homemade mashed potatoes and tasted more like they came from a dehydrated mix than fresh potatoes. Then there were the collard greens. Anyone who has spent time in a Southern kitchen knows you remove the tough stems, wash the greens thoroughly to get rid of the grit, and cook them until they're tender. Instead, I found large, woody stems that were nearly impossible to chew. It made me question whether anyone preparing the food has actually spent time cooking traditional Southern dishes. The mixed drinks didn't help the experience. They tasted more like watered-down hard seltzer with tonic than properly crafted cocktails. Overall, the restaurant felt more like another "Southern-themed" concept designed to market Southern comfort food than a place that actually understands or executes it. First, let me start by saying I think the restaurant is cute and I really love the tiling on the floor. I didn't get to go upstairs so I don't know what that is like. We ordered the cheese curds and those were good, but it's hard to mess up cheese curds! I did really enjoy the deviled eggs. Practically everything on the menu is fried, (yes, I know it's the south) so the gluten-free options are minimal. Whew! What an UNPLEASANT experience. Firstly, let me say that our waitress was a DELIGHT and she's the only reason there are any stars in this review. She did the best she could for a company/kitchen that doesn't seem to work with customers in mind. So to her I say thank you for refilling both my juice and water glass 3 times as I waited for food we both feared would NEVER be made. Now for the review: Firstly, will I EVER return here or recommend it to someone else? ---No. and here's why: I had a party of 5 and upon arrival, instead of being seated on the sunshine-filled main floor (where there were empty tables that could seat parties of 5), we were taken upstairs to an incredibly dimly lit area which brought to mind memories of school cafeteria. We immediately felt saddened because the photos of the main area were what drew us to the restaurant in the first place. So of course, we asked to be seated downstairs and thankfully they accommodated our request (why they didn't sit us down there immediately? I have not a clue. But SO glad we spoke up and didn't stay upstairs where ironically, the sun didn't shine) We were seated around 11:25am. Let me fast forward now and say our food arrived to our table at 12:40pm. That's right. Over an HOUR later. And you guessed it, nothing (besides the chicken tenders) was hot on our plates. So we couldn't even be comforted by the thought that it took so long because everything was being cooked fresh and plated hot. We also watched as tables that were seated AFTER US, were served BEFORE us. One table of 6 in particular -we watched as they were seated, served, and finished their meals before ours ever reached our table. Now our waitress (wish I got her name!) was a GEM. She made great drink and food recommendations and the poor thing was constantly saying "let me check the kitchen see how your food is coming along" ..over and over... only to return to our table in 10-15min increments..with no food. After waiting over an hour the food arrived. Only to find out someone's order (MY order) somehow didn't properly go through and thus.. hadn't been made with the rest of the party's. So of course my mood was just completely ruined. Over an hour wait, and still no food for me?-- I will say the waitress came to the rescue again and brought me a small side of curly fries and very onion-filled salad lol, free of charge (photos attached) so I could eat SOMETHING instead of sitting there starving while the rest of my party ate. At this point I wanted to just cancel my order (chicken pot pie) because by the time it DID arrive, I correctly guessed that my party would be almost if not completely finished with their food. Around 12:50pm I brought this concern to the waitress (asked her to just cancel it), and she URGED me to not do that because she just heard pot pie being announced and knew that was my order. I was upset but I said fine. Mind you...this is nearly 90mins after being seated, that my food was ready. But here's the finally kick in the pants- THEY STILL CHARGED ME FULL PRICE FOR THE POT PIE!!! there was no complimentary meal to make up for the TERRIBLE food service/timing. "Here's your pot pie we totally forgot to make...over an hour late, rushed and looking NOTHING like the website photo...that'll be $16." Besides the "tasty" chicken tenders, my friends also voiced that their food didn't taste seasoned at all. And neither was my pot pie, which, when I finally got a little forkful before asking for to-go box, tasted like they didn't season it whatsoever outside of a little salt and pepper sprinkles. Having tried the other Poogan's establishments, I knew I had to give this one a try. My friend and I got dressed up for a fun girls brunch. When we arrived to the restaurant, we realized that the atmosphere was quite casual and that we may have been overdressed. While the it is casual, it is decorated very modern. The restaurant is a decent size and does have a few large tables, so this would be a good options for bigger groups. To start, I enjoyed a Bellini and my friend ordered a Bloody Mary. The presentation of both drinks was standard. As an appetizer, we enjoyed the biscuits. The biscuits are served two to an order and come with butter and are also have a light honey glaze. For our entree, we both enjoyed the chicken and waffles, which is served with 3 chicken tenders and 4 waffle triangles. Additionally, fruit and syrup are served on the side. I believe the top issue with some things was seasoning. For example: Fried green tomatoes Fried chicken -the breading was seasoned but the seasoning didn't make its way to the meat of the chicken. One was order of chicken was sent back. It definitely needed something. Waffle was gummy- according to one. The red rice contained the scraping from the bottom on the pot-according to another. My hope each time I go out is to find a place to fall in love with and then recommend to others. I walk into a place with high hopes which can only be confirmed or dashed by the offerings. I don't know who has the nerve to call this Southern cooking. I was born and raised in the south and no self respecting Southern woman i know would let any of this touch her table. I went here with my 2 college age children. I had the filet, my son had the bone in fried chicken and my daughter had the tenders. My son's favorite food is fried chicken, he took two bites and could not eat another bite. My daughter said the tenders were average but the biscuits tasted like a dried out KFC biscuit. The filet had a terrible taste. The mac n cheese came out of a box. What a lovely eatery! With a beautiful atmosphere, delicious cocktails, and mouthwatering menu, we will be back often. We had lunch on a beautiful Monday afternoon. It was too different for my husband (a real meat and puhtaytuhs kinda guy), but I would happily get that next time. He had it with a side salad and vidalia onion dressing and their Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary had good flavors, but I don't know about it being the best. I guess we'll have to try more in the area. Oh nooooo, what's a girl to do?!! I wasn't very hungry so I just had the crab cake appetizer and they were delicious! Not overly creamy, letting the flavor of the crab come through. It also came with a little okra de gallo or something and I wish I would have had a larger side of that along with it. Apparently I like okra as it was my first time having it. The strawberry mule was quite good. We tried the speciality drink of the day, which was too sweet for both of us. I don't remember the name, but it had pineapple juice, curaçao, and rum. Our server Logan was the sweetest, but the food was a complete let down, collards were too salty to eat and there was big stems, hoppin John rice was mushy but the beans were crunchy, country fried steak was huge but salty, and I had the chicken and waffles, the waffle was great, but the chicken was bland, for dessert we split a peach cobbler which tasted good but was too sweet to actually enjoy, and was too soupy to feel like it was actually a cobbler. I've had their chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, fried chicken sandwich, and short rib Mac and cheese...all of which are wonderful. The service is good and always friendly. The restaurant itself is bright and open. The tables and chairs remind me of my grandmas kitchen table and chairs.
