Half pimento cheese and half tomato/mozzarella salad
    Kat T.

This location is still really good and consistent with their service and quality. They had changed a few items (from Corporate) such as the bread and type of lettuce used in the tomato mozzarella salad about a year or so ago, but things seemed to have straightened out now. They still have the majority of items that you have become accustomed to, so I don't mean to scare you off if you are experienced with this chain. When I come here, I usually sit inside, but I would bet three quarters of their business is for take-out. They have a drive-up window, so order ahead and it'll be ready when you arrive. Many people just walk in and place large orders...obviously feeding a family or friends elsewhere. If you choose to hang out, they have on tunes for your listening pleasure, as well as a tv, and it's a nice open yet inviting dining area with lots of natural light. As the name would imply, this is mainly a soup and sandwich/salad type place. They specialize in quite a variety and will let you taste samples, or you can get three soups as a meal. You can also get the half and half of your choice. No matter what you choose, it will definitely fill you up and you will have had a fresh wholesome meal.

Grilled cheese and 16 oz. Greek Lemon Chicken soup
    Nicole O.

Ladles has quickly become one of my favorite places to grab a quick, delicious lunch. They have a variety of soups to choose from and a great lunch deal- a grilled cheese, 8oz. soup, and a drink fro $6.95! *They even offer frozen quarts from time to time. On this visit I ordered the grilled cheese and opted for a larger, 16 oz. soup. The grilled cheese is good ol' American cheese melted between two perfectly buttered pieces of thick white bread. It is melty, buttery, and perfect for soup dipping! For the soup, I picked the Greek Lemon Chicken- it is my absolute favorite! It is a chicken broth based soup with small pearls of pasta, fresh green onion, shredded chicken, and feta chunks. To add to all of that- there is a lemon-y goodness of the broth that sounds odd but is simply refreshing! This soup saved my day when I was sick last. My boyfriend was feeling more adventurous than I was that day and ordered the Insanity Burger. This sandwich includes 2 hamburger patties (with cheese in between), sandwiched between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. Insanity! Please see my picture to see the size of this monster. My boyfriend said the cheeseburger itself was one of the best he's had on James Island. The patties had that grilled on a flat top, good grease taste. Come hungry if you want to try this one!

If possible, I would recommend calling in ahead of time if it's around a busy time of day. I got the Turkey Bacon Griller sandwich, which was turkey, bacon, swiss, tomatoes, and mayo on rye. It came with a bag of chips, and it was quite tasty. I'd say a full sandwich with chips wasn't as filling as I would hope, so I would recommend adding a salad or soup with a sandwich. I also tried the Chicken Noodle Soup, which was way too salty. I couldn't taste much besides the salt, and had to add some water to the soup to make it palatable for me. Overall, I liked the setting, everything seemed very clean, but the wait for my food was unfortunately quite long and while the sandwich tasted good, the soup was too salty. For the price, it was just ok.

I ordered the 1/2 honey fried chicken w/ mac & cheese and collard greens. For dessert, we shared pecan pie. The chicken was moist & delicious from being brined and seasoning in the batter. The batter was crunchy, and perfectly applied so you didn't bite into a hunk of just batter. Likewise, the sides were some of the best I had during my trip to SC. Lastly, the pecan pie was really good also. However, I was expecting a bigger & taller slice. Regarding the ambiance, its smart casual here. The decor is fancier vs the down home cooking. My friend said the tomato pie was really good but it's all cheese and tomatoes. The fried green tomatoes were crispy but needed seasoning. They were incredibly bland. For the main dish she ordered the smash burger and I ordered the fish and grits. She took one bite of the smash burger and sent it back saying it tasted like a frozen burger you'd get at Walmart. The fish and grits were ok. They too were bland and needed salt. A LOT of salt or any other seasoning. The okra, Lima beans and corn that come in this dish also tasted like it came out of a frozen bag. There is no seasoning in this dish whatsoever. Unfortunately this place was a miss and we won't be returning. Also the bathrooms look like a porta potty. You know the cheap plastic that porta potties are made out of? Yeah that's what the stalls are made out of. It looks so cheap and a big contrast from the rest of the restaurant. The staff was nice but they also look like they hate working here.

I went to look at their online menu and realized I'd be keeping it light for the sake of my daily food budget. I called in to order takeout and ordered the Blintz, as it was reasonably priced and fair for the portion size: two crepes filled with their beef filling and a side of sour cream priced at $7.99. When I walked up to pay, the lady rang me up for $10 and change. I thought it was weird that I was paying nearly two dollars in tax on an eight-dollar purchase. She printed out the receipt, and it showed the price was $8.99 for the Blintz. There happened to be a menu right next to the cash register, and I pointed out that it said $7.99, and that their website said the same thing. She said, "sorry ‍," and just waved me off as if it was completely irrelevant and not worth looking into. Obviously, a dollar is not the end of the world--it's more the principle of placing an order under the expectation that prices are as advertised, and that not being the case, plus them not caring about it. I paid the $10 and took the food. They forgot the sour cream, so I had to ask for that. The last disappointment was when I found out how much food I got for $10. I get that you pay a little extra for quality, but sheesh... these things are barely the size of my finger. The food was overall pretty tasty; if we're just measuring taste, I'd give it a 7.5/10. Overall, this was a very poor experience, and it might be hard for me to try again.

All of these were DELICIOUS! Their caviar service was one of the best I've seen, the oyster slider was delicious and my only complaint is that the oyster itself was small. The oyster appetizer was unique but had great flavor with the old bay seasoned crackers. For entrees I had the cornmeal friend fish. It was a great size price of fish, came out hot and fresh and fried to perfection. It does come on a bed of cream corn, but there were no real side dishes you could add or order.
