Ohhhhhhhh McCann's. You shine like a beacon to us every time we're back up visiting family, it's late, we'd like a few stiff drinks, and perhaps we're HONGRAY and seeking something better than just a slice. This is an unassuming little Irish pub. It's frequented by locals and a great place to go if you're trying to avoid the Guidos and the drunken overflow from Bar A. It's a good place to get solid, reasonable drinks - something that can be rare down the shore ($overpriced well drinks at *insert shore bar/ club here*, anyone?). There's often live music (good variety, too!), and the space is comfortable, clean and well-maintained. But, even with all those wonderful benefits, for me the big star is the food. For your appetizer, skip the greasy fried junk. Go for the mussels in white wine and garlic or the roasted clams. (You're at the shore, for heaven's sake! Have some seafood!) As for your main course... Well, the owner (Tom) is always there manning the grill... and let me tell you: The guy knows his way around a steak. Personally, I roll with the steak au poivre, medium rare. (The bf usually rolls with the Steak McCann, which is topped with a brown sauce and some pretty hot peppers... and for what it's worth, I've tried the other specialty steaks on the menu, each of which has a different topper, and they're all tasty.) Your steak comes with a soup or salad (I get the salad and bypass the dressing, heading straight for the house steak sauce, which is killer) as well as your choice of potato. Like garlic? Just say "Sicilian". These are sliced, lightly fried and topped (or slathered, rather) with a delicious garlic concoction that you will want on everything you eat from that day forward. If you're not feeling some alone time with a big slab o' meat, then opt for the steak sandwich on garlic toast. It's a great way to get a taste of the good stuff, but on a budget. So, yes. McCann's. It hasn't yet failed us, and I doubt it ever will. Tom is personally invested in this place, and it shows. The food is consistent, the service decent, and the location gets better and better. After my experience a couple nights ago I feel the need to sit down and write a review about McCann's. Firstly, I would like to clarify that I raised the vote to two stars only because I have had good food there before. However, one horrible experience at an establishment can drive away the most loyal customer no matter the history. It was Monday night this week and to be fair, EVERY local restaurant was very busy. So we made our way around looking for a fun place with decent food that also happened to have the football game on. Our first 3 choices were slammed and had long waits so we kept on trucking and headed towards McCann's, hungry but happy knowing how good the food can be there. So, we sit down at the bar and after 15 minutes one of the three employees that had passed us multiple times finally made eye contact. (not a friendly smile or utterance was spoken to us during the entire 45 minute ordeal) The employee asks us if we would like a drink, we order and I mention that we would like to see a menu... to which he makes a obnoxious sound of frustration, rolls his eyes and mutters something as he turns to walk away without even attempting to offer us a menu. Being the patient and understanding people we are we just assume they are having a rough night and will get to us when they catch their breath. For the next 30 minutes we watched as 3 different employees walked back and forth right in front of us as we sat with empty drink glasses and never once even looked in our direction (to the extent that it appeared as though they thought if they didn't look towards us we would go away... And ultimately we did). I don't ask for much but I don't expect to have to tackle a server for decent service or even just a kind word showing they care about their paying customers. That was some of the worst service, or lack of, I've ever seen in my life and after leaving hungry we will not be back again. read more

PDuBs are one amazing band to play for free on a Friday night at McCann's. That alone should give this place 5 stars. However, the staff is a bit cracked out and lacks the vibe I would expect from a 'Reggae loving joint' Regardless of that, you still get your alcohol fix, just make the order quick, so you don't miss anything on stage! read more

Mr McCann knows how to cook a steak. I will put his steak against any of the local steakhouses anyday. Pricey but worth it. Try the garlic potatos and peppercorn sauce. I'm a fan of the NY Strip. read more

McCann's gets 5 stars, they serve food til 1:15 am and it's cooked tight behind the bar. Get their Tango Shrimp and Garlic Fries.

If big Tommy McCann is manning the grill then you have to order a steak and the tango shrimp. My favorite "dive" around.

Went there on Monday night for dinner with my wife. We ordered burgers which were served cold and the buns were stale. Very disappointed; been there before and received poor service and bad food but decided to try again since a friend told me the food is much improved. It is a rare occasion when my wife and I get to go out to eat since we have a newborn and a 2 1/2 year old. I don't have the time to keep trying this place with the hope of improved food or service. Was not served because I walked in and was off balance because I have balance issues. I did not have anything to drink nor did I say anything, but the bartender told my friend that I had to much to drink...would not even speak to me. Went to the bar across the street and had a nice conversation with the bartender and a few good drinks. It was evident that the manager at Mccannns did not appreciate anyone who was not a local as the crowd was middle aged fairly intoxicated white men. This is a very poor establishment and it was evident that none of the vibrant people of this town would even consider this establishment. read more

havent been in here for a few years because of the horrible service coming from the head down. went in monday for two for one burger nite. the waiter told me that i could not have the pizza burger (more expensive) and a swiss burger at the two for one price even if I paid the higher price!!!! Stopped in here last night. Had heard good things about their steaks. Went on a Tuesday, and got their special for the evening - the Garlic Steak. It was a sirloin, which I'm generally not a fan of, but this particular steak was really good, surpassing even my expectations. And it was under 10 bucks!! What a steal. I have also heard good things about their NY Strip, so I will have to come back on a Thursday (Steak Night) to give it a try. If it's as good as I've heard, I will have to turn this 4 star into a 5 star! read more

There is a reason for so many four and five star reviews. I have been coming here for over 15 years. Can eat at bar or booths and tables. Not fancy but comfortable. Great sandwiches and favorite steaks. Wonderful place for casual fare. read more

My two sons and I just had a great lunch at McCann's Tavern. My Chicken Cavan sandwich was just the right amount of "hot". All of our sandwiches were huge and the service was great! I'd come here again! The crime brûlée cheescake was fabulous! read more

McCanns has great food (specials too) and you can order late. It's a great spot to watch a game or just to get some drinks. There's a Pool Table and fireplace in the back for a cozier feel in the winter. A jukebox is a nice add to this local gem. read more

McCaans is just filthy. I wouldnt eat there if you paid me. That guy who owns the joint actually uses burgers and steaks that have turned to brown. I was in the back smoking and he came out and yelled at this guy for trying to throw away some steaks and burgers..This disgusting pig reached into the garbage and pulled em out. He said "Just make sure these get cooked first before anything else" I was like OMG!! Plus this guy rips you off. I have had several friends complain that when ya get drunk and dont watch your tab. He throws extra drinks on there and when he gets caught he says it was a mistake etc etc etc...well when the mistake happens all the time and always when the bar is crowded and people are wasted I have to think it is just nefarious actions on his part. read more

What a dump! I should have known not to bother with this place when I called on Thursday to ask about the Reggae Band that was playing on Friday night. All I got were one word answers. I thought to give it a shot anyway. So My friend and I go in and sit at the bar. I ask the waitress for a menu (she looked lost) and handed me the stickiest menu I ever saw. So we placed an order of crazy fries (which I was told would be provolone n bacon over fries,) and chicken tenders. When the heavier of the 2 bartenders drops a plate of burnt up French fries covered in brown gravy with white cheese over it, I asked what that was. He grunts at me and tells me crazy fries. This turns into a back n forth issue with the waitress n bartender telling me I was informed what was in the crazy fries order. I tell the bartender that I don't want them. He grabs the plate with an attitude. The 2nd plate he dropped consisted of so called 'chicken tenders.' One word-gross! The chicken tenders were coated with some thick breading, the chicken was over-cooked and the 'sweet n sour' dipping sauce was disgusting. My friend had a Heineken (how can that go wrong) the beer was frozen and spilled out on the counter. No one came over to clean it up or offer to give napkins. The bartenders stood around not asking if anyone needed or wanted anything. To obtain a beer or anything, we waited until they came over to where we sat (which was in front of the glass washing area) to get the bartenders eye to get a drink. The bartenders never conversed with anyone we were around, they stood around, just waiting to have their attention caught to actually pour drinks, shots, etc. The bartenders over poured beers n shots to the point of spilling on the counter. The glasses were sticky. The bar has a metal rail going around the length of the bar. Don't lean on this thing, it's broken and you can get your arm pinched. The bathrooms were tiny and run down, no paper towels to dry your hands! To top it off, we were told the band would be on at 10pm, they started playing close to 11pm. The music was louder than the singer. They sang 4 songs and took a 20 minute break. Really! read more
